someone. we've seen seven deaths in over nine states. what this one particularly -- this is from a fungal infection which is totally different because this steroid infection that 9 million people get for back pain, it's a popular pep -- epidural treatment. it has a contamination. it's noncontagious. you cannot get it from touching someone but it's a fatal problem. over a thousand people probably were contaminated. there's 18,000 vials out there so people need to know. the problem is not from the manufacturers, it's compounding centers. this particular one is from new england in massachusetts. there are some fungal contamination that's there, which is unfortunate. the fda needs to look into this seriously and make sure the middle guy is not messing around with the medications and
7:31 am
contaminating people. how do you know you have this? number one, if you got any kind of steroid infection, epidural, between july of this year and september 28, you need to be aware and talk to your doctor. if you have headache, stiff neck, any nausea, confused, make sure you see your doctor immediately because this is serious. when caught early, the treatment is very -- you can treat it very well. there are iv medications for antifungals that's very effective. if you have symptoms, see your doctor. >> how could this happen? what compounding company put fungal material in this? >> here's the problem. we have a huge drug shortage to we have compounding pharmacies. they take a drug there may be a shortage of and do it cheaper. there's 7500 in the country, one the new england compounding center. they don't have the same
7:32 am
sterilization proceedses. so this fungus could be in the air and you don't have the sterilizing hoods you need and somehow, as they mix the vials, the steroid into the vials, it gets in there. that's what's gone wrong and why the fda has to step up supervision to these pharmacies. once it gets in, it's not contagious so everyone watching, you shouldn't think you're going to get this if you didn't get an infection. you can't. but you could get it if you had one of these infections that came from this particular compounding pharmacy over the last several weeks. >> do they keep track? >> they do. >> if you call your doctor, would they know? >> exactly. you have to check with the doctor and say where did it come from? then you have to be on the lookout. after a few weeks you won't get t. >> you get fever, headache,
7:33 am
malaise. with fungal meningitis you don't get the same rip roaring symptoms as bacterial. >> what is malaise. fatigue, tired, no energy. >> why don't they shut this place down? >> it's done. >> that's right. not just this place, i'm -- sheer shutting this play -- place down. i'm worried across the board. >> i have to tell you also, yes and no, but there's 7500 of these compounding companies that are actually quite helpful. it's not just to really say negative things. they made a lot of medications, for example if you're allergic or for pediatrics or kids. they play a big role. 3% of the medications in this country is done by this company. if you go after manufacturers but not after the middle guy, by the time it gets to the patients, we have a problem.
7:34 am
we had the tylenol issue and that was a fungal infection. we have to make sure this issue doesn't happen. seven dead and unfortunately i anticipate over the next few days, we're going to see more and more numbers of these people. >> number one, we've seen this with lettuce and spinach. the same idea. you start in one state. when it gets exported to other states, it's hard to track. the other point, the fda may need new regulations and laws to be able to come into the middleman and make sure this is sterile. >> bottom line, talk to your doctor if you had the infections. >> thank you for getting the word out. we know of course the word's out on the dangerous of smoking. but there's a new study that links memory problems with people who regularly breathe in secondhand smoke. it's not just if you're a smoker, now if you have a friend that smokes, it could affect your brain? >> i'm glad you framed it that
7:35 am
way. it started when san francisco, ucsf, did a huge study looking at 20 other studies and said smoking increases your risk of alzheimers by two times. why does it do that? well, if leads to other problems that are related to dementia. you gain weight, obesity, high blood pressure. i'm saying smoking itself is associated with these other conditions. in addition, smoke has nicotine in it which affects the brain direct will directly and directy leads to dementia. secondhand smoke has the same problems as primary smoke. you get exposed to it, it's as if you smoked it yourself. as a matter of fact you don't have the filter so you may get worse chemicals. this study out of britain was
7:36 am
small. the reason i started by talking about the larger study in the past, this one was small. it looked at 27 smokers, 26 nonsmokers. and -- rather 16 nonsmokers and 26 secondhand. they found if you smoked, you had a worse chance of getting dementia but secondhand smoke was almost as bad. the bottom line is cigarette smoking is bad. it leads to strokes, it leads to high blood pressure, diabetes and dementia. >> a lot of people smoke thinking it will keep them thin. should there be warning on cigarettes adding dementia? >> i don't think there's any room left on the package with the pictures and dramatic information that's there. if i was a cigarette company and listening to this segment, i would say where's the proof? the truth is there are a lot of theories but we have not been able to show the real cause and effect. a small study will not say much
7:37 am
except there's some association. what are the -- we think that nicotine can shut down blood flow to the brain. you need exogen to think and bring memories. your cognitive skills will be affected by the toxic affect of anyone teen in the thalamus and areas where the memories are. the biggest one is some ox dated stress, smoking, whether firsthand or secondhand, puts a lot of free radicals and oxidation on the brain. that's one of the reasons in the past you heard dr. rosenfeld think about freed radicals. ginkgo biloba, we're seeing controversial studies about it, it may or may not help. antioxidants, how many blueberries and raspberries can you have? vitamin a, e and c clean up some
7:38 am
of those radicals. they're good for you. vitamin b-12 improves your memory. that's helpful to make sure. ask your doctor, check my vitamin b-12. now, the effect of smoking, it takes five to ten years if you quit today to clear up from your system. a lot of study show when you do that, within two to three years, you see improvement in your memory and this is absolutely -- you don't need me to tell you to stop smoking. >> one tiny point. it's not necessarily the direct effect on the brain. it could be the direct effect or other things that smoking does to your body that causes memory problems. >> whatever it is, if you hang out with us, please quit. >> don't smoke. >> that's a strong message. >> speaking of things that affect your brain, how about stress? it can take a physical toll. coming up, the doctors tell us what we should pay attention to
