focus in connecticut are bracing for the most dangerous weather they've seen. a little concern here in new york too. let's bring in rick reichmuth live in the extreme weather. everybody along the seaboard should be concerned. >> a lot of concern in new york city, long island, new jersey just from the storm surge, which is going to be significant. the storm is strengthening as a hurricane. it has warm water to go over and will strengthen as a hurricane but the other is the clash of cold air, that forms the hybrid nor'easter storm that will cause incredible storm surge like we've never seen. say it comes on shore in central jersey. it puts new york city, long island, connecticut and cape cod and the islands on the bad side. the worst will be around long

island. storm surge comes down the long island sound, say six to ten feet of that. it's bigger here and funnels into a smaller air. we have storm surge coming into new york harbor. the only way the two connect is through the east river. when it comes up on the south side is doesn't have any place to go so we'll have significant flooding in manhattan and the burrows. the other is the massive wind field, 50 to 60 miles an hour as far as chicago from this storm. >> quickly, we read the full moon had something to do with it. >> it does, that storm surge means you have astronomical high tide. add 8-foot storm surge and 20-foot waves on top of that. >> interesting. thank you so much. good advice.

7:33 am
underlying heart disease, diabetes but we have an obesity epidemic and your risk of complications is better. callahan calls pregnancy a stress test for the body and not enough women say before i get pregnant, are my medical problems under control. do i have the right medication s my diabetes under control. kilos weight? am i at the optimal weight? we're seeing more bleeding after birth because mother women after having had c-sections are trying to have vaginal deliveries. you have to see experts in maternal fetal medicine. what has been said is what about the m in maternal feeting medicine. we worry about the neonate but what about the mother? >> you're saying, before you get pregnant, be aware of your health. >> stop smoking for sure.
7:34 am
>> absolutely. that's key. watch out for your health before you get pregnant. it's a long-term problem. not one visit. >> do you think the message will get through? >> it's important because of the demographic of pregnant women changing. there are more professionals getting married later in life. obesity plays a huge role as does age, pregnancy changes the physiology of the body. the baby presses on the kidneys, the heart, the blood pressure and that's added stress. so we're seeing sicker population of women getting pregnant with diabetes and high blood pressure and obesity. that increases the risk of blood clots and complications as a result of it. this is an important point is that preventing is ahead of time. if you plan to become pregnant, make sure you see your doctors and try to take care of the diabetes and high blood pressure and lose weight.
7:35 am
optimizing yourself for pregnant is an important point. that point is important. that's how you prevent complications. >> grated. >> if you're responsible enough to take care of a baby, you should start by trying to get yourself into the best condition. >> it's not just girls developing at younger ages. a recent study found boys are entering puberty earlier. >> this is important because for a long time we thought the girls are actually getting -- going into puberty early on. this same team coming from chapel hill in north carolina, they had a landmark study in '97 and now they find out boys, normally they go through puberty at age 11, now six months two years earlier. the parents need to be aware because some of these changes, physical or the sexual or
7:36 am
developmental changes going on with boys, the parents need to be aware and have a discussion. for girls, it's easier to detect because they get their menstrual cycles. with boys, we never knew. what boys, they have looked at over 4,000 boys. they followed them a long period and they really tested them. now we're finding out that that process happens earlier and i think the big message to the parents is pay attention your son an follow them. when that happenings, you'll be prepared so i can have intelligent conscious with your children. >> we'll save what to tell them but is there a tell tale sign about when they enter bubty -- puberty. >> deeper voice, they grow hair. but what is fascinating is we don't know why this is happening. with girls, we think it's obesity. they gain weight and make estrogen.
7:37 am
with boys, we don't know. could it have something to do with lifestyle, or hormoneses but the conversation has to occur earlier. the problem is, if the physical doesn't match the emotional, studies show with girls it led to increased risk of depression, self-esteem. we'll see the same with boys. it brings us to the alert it isn't just girls. >> the terminology we use in urology doesn't matter but early puberty can increase breast cancer in girls and also a lot of cancers in boys. detecting it early and having a discussion with your doctor is critical. >> very important. thank you both. tea can be a nice way to kick off your day or unwind after a long one. do you know now they say there's a type of tea that wards off

7:44 am
those that -- this is something called an observational study meaning it doesn't prove if you drink it, you will not get cancer. that would take thousands of people, give one green tea and another group not green tea. green tea has healthy properties. it's got something called cataegeans, that have flavonoids that give plants color. these chemicals seem to stabilize cells. they're antioxidants and keep the cells in the gi tract from changing into cancer cells. i'm against the caffeine that comes with it but i love green tea. >> coffee, you're a big fan. does it do the same? >> no, completely different. we'll talk about it perhaps today with -- about coffee. but green tea, i've been a
7:45 am
advocate of herbals. i think this study, as mark mentioned, was observational. i don't know how canadians followed 69,000 chinese women over ten years. that by itself, i would love to know who invested in this research. there are antioxidants in green tea. polyfennels and egcg, the green tea extracts and on and on but this 69,000 chinese, they were exercising, eating fruits and vegetables. they come from higher salary jobs and were younger. so there could be contaminants with the study. for people watching, if you're not drinking tea and you're doing well, you don't have to run and get green tea. the studies change week by week.
7:46 am
a lot of studies are in animal studies. one day they're great for diabetes and high cholesterol and the other day, not so good. too much tea causes kidney stones. talk to your doctor. if you're on chemotherapy, don't touch green tea. if you take coumadin and blood thinners, don't take green tea on your own. >> that sounds like a lifesaver. >> very important. it could be the healthy lifestyle. it doesn't have to be the green tea. they may eat more fruits and vegetables. >> the warnings about chemotherapy and coumadin are great. >> many of us are about to see and eat a lot of candy. we'll talk about which treats are, if any, the healthiest. >> states of emergency declared along most of the eastern

back with "sunday house call." some people go to the doctor for a checkup once a year. a study suggests a different approach claiming there's little benefit to the annual exam on healthy people. some go every six months and feel better doing that. >> first i want to burst the bubble on where this comes from. it's a cochran library. there's a ph.d. student in denmark that looked at 183 patients over many decades. they concluded the physical didn't benefit. it didn't make them less worried or go to the doctor more overall. that's good information but i want to burst the bubble because in daily practice there are other things that are important. those studies didn't look at smoking, the fact that you lower your cholesterol and blood pressure by going at least once a year to the doctor.
7:52 am
i don't do yearly physicals in my practice. i follow patients regularly but the yearly physical may help me bring somebody back in i haven't seen all year. fy haven't seen someone and they're suffering from regular medical health problems, i want to help. if i see them regularly, they don't need the yearly physical. a diabetic i see every three or four months, check their blood pressure but what about vaccines, cholesterol testing, blood pressure testing, screening tests for smokers. you have to see a patient at least once a year. i can spread it out over the year. >> i look at it like taking your car in once a year. i want to go in at least once a year. how do you know you won't get cancer or to you -- tumor. >> i'm waiting for him to burst a bubble. >> you should see your doctor

regularly. >> you're right. we're living longer because medical doctors are taking care of heart issues. i'm an advocate of prevention. it's excellent to get a baseline physical exam early. if you're healthy and there are no medical issues it's okay to go to every four years. we're not talking about screening, just physical exam including ekg, blood tests. if you're fine, you don't need it every year, so go to four or five years. when it comes to are screening, mammograms, colonoscopy, do it on a regular basis and follow your doctor's advice. that's really important. >> you don't want something to pop up. >> no, that's true. and as doctors, sometimes we tend to be more overdoing it and be more overcautious. so you have to take it case by case. >> there's enough things to check so that we have to check
