how bad it was and probably some explanation that lies in whatever anger he had toward his mother or the school, whatever, the problem with that explanation, it's not going to explain why all these children had to be killed and any more than there's an explanation for september 11th, but it doesn't explain why the poor guy delivering bagels that day got killed for whatever the crazy cause was. >> and the same way, that was exactly my thought. it was so unfathomable on that day that so much hatred could drive men to hijack planes and drive them into the pentagon and shanksville-- >> there's a lot to this, jon. i was watching fox earlier and heard governor huckabee talk about evil and the fact that sometimes we can't confront the fact, there's just evil in the world. well, there is. on the other hand, there are also medical and scientific categories you can put this into that the final result is we don't understand this well

enough and anybody offering simple solutions to something like this is offering no solution. this is not a simple thing, it doesn't have a simple solution. a lot of things have to be looked at as we move through this because we're just not good at predicting this kind of behavior. we don't understand it yet. >> at the same time, the whole nation wants to wrap this community in a big hug and just embrace it. >> because the whole nation realizes it can happen to them. it could happen to newton-- newtown, connecticut, an idyllic community, it can happen anywhere in this country. it doesn't mean it's going to happen, doesn't mean it's a prevalent crime, it isn't. this is not the way most children, god forbid are going to be hurt or injured. other ways to get hurt or injured and we have to pay attention to. this is so horrific and so arbitrary it could happen to any one of us and all of us have this nightmare about our

that many of us probably didn't know too much about yesterday until we got the news of the shooting and exactly what happened at sandy hook elementary school. at this point we probably all feel a little bit connected to this community. it's something that the president talked about yesterday and the president getting very emotional while making a statement at the white house saying we've endured too many of these incidents over the last few years and every time he learns the news he reacts not as a president, but as a parent. let's listen to the president. >> i know there's not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages and five and ten years old.

they had their entire lives ahead of them. birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of gone, among the fallen were teachers, men and women who devoted their lives helping hour children fulfill their dreams, so, our hearts are broken today. for the parents, and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. >> the president emotional yesterday, speaking about the shooting. the president's weekly media message today also touching on the school massacre and the president says the countries has a heart heavy with hurt and republicans canceled the weekly address saying they wanted the president to speak for the the entire nation at

this time of mourning. jon? >> we just got a nod of ascent from former new york city mayor rudy guiliani. that's the right thing to do. >> absolutely, i think the president said it just perfectly and my heart goes out to him, now, i remember september 11th right afterwards having to do two or three press conferences and hardest thing to do was not to cry and i found out that one of my friend's wife had died and i actually stood behind somebody so nobody would see me crying, but it's very, very hard to not feel the emotion of something like this, all of us being parents and even ones that aren't parents, they're aunts or uncles, they understand children and understand what it means to have the innocent little children just mowed down in an absolutely incomprehensible fact and how does somebody stand in front of a classroom and kill a five or six-year-old. it completely is impossible

for any vaguely normal person to understand that. >> and this school apparently had done everything right. aisle, you cannot, you cannot-- even if they had turned the school into a fortress and had the schools locked. >> in a community like that, they did more in a community like that than you would generally do. this is a community with one violent crime. this isn't even a dangerous a suburban or urban area and they had more security than any facts would suggest. the guy basically sounds like shot his way in. you could say, well, should they have had an armed police officer there? nothing in the past suggested they have an armed police officer there. having an armed police officer in the school is somewhat disconcerting for the children and who is to say he wouldn't have shot the armed police officer. he did a pretty good job of shooting the principal. this kid looks two things about him, looks like he knew how to shoot, and very good
