[applaus [applause] >> a great audience here today, thank you so much and welcome to huckabee from the fox news studios in new york city. okay. i found a new way, this week, to make liberals really, really mad at me. here is what you do. just repeat what liberals are saying. they hate it when conservatives agree with them. all right. the new york times started all this by publishing a photo of the president meeting with what the white house described as his key economic advisors during the fiscal cliff negotiations. they noted that every one in the room was of the male gender. so, the white house press corps peppered spokesman jay carney about all the men he's appointing to major slots and

carney dug his own hole and jumped into it saying the president is looking for the best people. and caused the women mo supported the president if he's saying there weren't qualified women available. democratic congressman charlie rangel got more blunt, here is what he said. see it yourself. >> and speak for itself, what does it say going into the second term? >> it's embarrassing as hell. >> now, when cnn covered the nomination of jack lew for treasury secretary, it ran a banner, another white man added to second term cabinet. even now the national organization for women sent an e-mail that proved the old addage, hell hath no furry like a woman scorned. now, i'm just repeating that. i didn't originate it. so on my radio show he this week, i simply stated the obvious as already affirmed by the not so conservative new york times, charlie rangel, n.o.w. and others, and that's the president and cabinet and

inner circle seemed loaded with testosterone and running a little low on estrogen. but for the women who thought the president had promised women more prominent role in his administration, i remind you to review the speeches at the democratic national convention. the cry from the podium was not so much for positions of authority, but for free birth control pills and abortions anytime, anyplace, for any reason and at no cost. the image of women the democrats convention was that women were utterly helpless unless the government stepped in and provided birth control and abortions and that was the absurd political ad of the obama campaign a woman named julia, cradle to grave, depended on good old uncle sugar for everything from education, a job, health care, food, housing and retirement. now, the women in my family and the wknow, and work with, well, frankly, they are as good as any of the men noi

a noi-- i know and work with. i've never thought of them being helpless without the help of the government or some man shepherding them through life, silly me, i never thought to think of women as helpless. that's why the they went stark raving, linda blair turning her head and spitting pea soup enraged at me. i'm not the one that you should be mad at, i'm saying what some of your heroes said. if women are getting nothing much more than bill control pills and abortion from this government, i don't support taking the lives of babies. since you don't want me in your bedroom, i don't know why i have to pay for what happens in there. and that's my view. shut it down before it airs. that petition has got thousands of signatures. star, does it shock you? i mean, we've gone from ozzie and harriet to leave it to beaver and cosby show and brady bunch to stuff like this? >> and outrage over murphy brown. and we could get this low. and it's not news at that majority of black children are born out of marriage, 75%, opposed to 25% in the 60's, that's not news anymore and record numbers of black men are fathering children by multiple women. this is happening too much. what is new on this, oxygen thinks it's funny. when you think about what this means, when we look at what has happened in black america, leading on age, leading on out of wedlock birth. six of tens of the babies being aborted in the community. this should be an embarrassment in black america. it certainly, certainly is a tragedy to our history and our legacy and our ancestors, and

it's a blight, an economic bright on our society talking 600 billion dollars a year in welfare programs and they think this is humor and think this is something that we should reward and celebrate. we've reached a real new low. >> you've spent a lot of your adult life fighting against not only the stereo type, but in your own life, the struggle that came tu today leading an organization to help empower people to be on their own. >> that's right, i actually lived the life of the left seven years in and out of welfare dependency and i believed my problems were somebody else's fault. i believed that america was so inherently racist and seven years in and out of welfare, three and a half years consistently until a christian conversion changed my life, but you're right, i read urban cure.org what, we look at market based solutions to fight poverty. this is not helping, to celebrate what has broken down so horrifically in this particular community. i'm wondering if now we can

survive. if you can be rewarded for this type of ill behavior then where do we stop? how do we put the plug on what has happened to destroy the legacy of blacks in this country? >> star, it's obvious you feel very offended as an african-american and as a woman, that the show would come out and depict, essentially a whole group of women, almost being kept, if you will, by this rapper who can't even name his own kids. >> they're not being kept. i can guarantee if you go into their lives we'll see welfare dependency inside and out. this is not new in black america. what we're going to look at are children that are going to be confused and go into a public school system and teaching them moral, and pattern their lives after their parents. the dad, he has two boys in this equation, these two boys will probably repeat his habits, and the daughters, all of these girls, are going to their mother's treated and accept that as normal.

this is horrible, what oxygen has done and i actually commend the young woman and she's a committee of one, who said i'm going to start a petition. where are some of the leaders who care they pretend about the plight of the poor and where is jesse jackson and al sharpton and keep insisting-- >> that's the point that does disturb me. you're subpoenaipeaking out abo and your organization, but i'm not hearing leaders in the so-called civil rights movement or anti-poverty saying something is wrong when you glorify this life style. >> and it should have knocked on the door and privately discussed and not that oxygen would dare to touch this, to make humor for people to entertain them so, we're not seeing those types of protests we see protests when they went through the perception of racism industry, but when there's a real problem coming through and using black america and especially to take

[applause] >> okay. i want to start, william, if you and travis, right now you're running some businesses and you've got employees that got their checks and they said, whoa, what did your employees say when they got their first check and thought you had cut their wages? >> the first thing that occurred to me after i came back to the company after the end of the years, my employees said the paycheck is wrong, something's gone wrong, it's lower than it used be to be. i don't know, i'm not sure what happened. let me take a look at it. the reality each one of their paychecks making about $50 a week less the taxes going up on the average employee. >> that's real money for employees working for you. >> that's $200 a month. a lot of employees commute from new jersey, 20, 30 miles, a gas tank of fuel for them a

week and has an impact on the american. >> mike: and travis, a new start-up company, building a wonderful little tool to teach people guitar. as a start-up company, how do these taxes hit you when you're trying it launch and get going? i mean, you won the shark tank and that's a great thing, but looks like the real sharks may be in washington now. >> absolutely. it's, you know, exactly what he said. i was on the road most of december, out pushing my product. travelling with it all over the country and i came home and my managers come to me and said, man, our paychecks are all jacked up. and i said what's wrong? and to be totally honest, i was working so much. i didn't know. and we use a software formula that automatically deducted it. one of my main employees told me travis, i need overtime to make up for this or look for another job. >> mike: john, you're one of

the evil 1 percenters, i don't know if i want to sit this close to you. >> yeah. >> you're in the upper 1%, but here is what i want people to know. >> and all over me to hear that by the way. >> you didn't start out as a 1 percenters. >> grew up in amarillo texas in a double wide trailer and living lean and mean and we were fine, weren't missing meals, but lean and mean, but to go from that, 20 years in country music and having a great career, thanks to the fans and the people supporting me all of these years. [applause] >> a great career. and now i hire, and if you add everybody up, between 40 and 50 employees. >> mike: you've got a lot of people. when you're on the road. >> bus drivers, band guys, everything that goes with the tour. >> mike: you've been hit not only with the tax increases that these guys talked about, but you because you're one of the evil guys up in the upper crust, some, something's got

to go. what's going to happen to you and the people that you hire on the road, as a result of the increase in taxes, probably 7, 8% all told you're going to be paying more. >> oh, no, it's big. you're running a business, you know? you want to run a successful business you don't want to run it in the red, you want to run it in the black so you're looking at a big chop, like 6, 7% in 2013 you weren't paying in 2012 and that's a lot. so, you're looking at, well, can we get by with one less bus or can i do with a five piece band instead of six piece band and on and on and it goes and i cannot believe americans didn't get their head wrapped around that, hey, if your boss gets dinged, you're going to get dinged, that's the way it goes. and-- (applause) >> you know, welcome, you're running a manufacturing business, which is very tough because you're competing with people all over the world. do your employees, are they demoralized, tougher for you to get them to be motivated to

work as hard? >> sure, it does. when an employee makes less every week, he's less inclined to work and one of the other big problems, our business making steel we see product coming in from europe and our company has a big opportunity to make a new product class. the second call that i received on coming back from the new year was my accountant and her message to me was we need to talk about taxes, already i'm scheduled to make tax payments and if i'm making tax payments to the federal government for increased taxes on my business i'm not able to buy new equipment, not able to put more men to work and my men's future is less certain, the money i invest in equipment which gives them their job security, the productivity and the wages they enjoy. >> mike: capital expenses go down because you don't have the capital to expand the business? >>nator, capital expenditure goes down, and the equipment that american manufacturers rely on to compete in a low wage global environment go away. >> mike: all right. travis, what happens to your business in this coming year? >> we had two huge rollouts

and the left-handed model for chord buddy, 20% of people are left-handed and the classical model it's not going to happen. we will not get the breaks that are need today write off that money tax-wise, it's not there anymore. >> mike: new product means you've got to manufacture more, means somebody's got to build it, somebody's got to ship it, somebody's got to sell it, so it's several jobs down the line, that won't happen because you don't have the money to make that work. >> right. >> and john, you talked about may be fewer folks out on the road with you. >> yeah. >> mike: what happens to those people, where do they go? what can they do? >> it's that effect of people losing jobs. and i mean, it's a painful thing to let somebody go that you've been working with for years and years and especially in music and what i do. that's part of what you do and part of your sound, but at the end of the day looking at your papers and your numbers and i'm not going to run a business in the red, i'm not

going to do it. that's how i got to where i'm at by running things in the red. i want to run it in the black and that means if i've got to make a hard call, i have to. >> does that make you angry people on the left and president have demonized you because you're successful. i take it personally and i see the people that occupy wall street and guys calming out on tents on ipads that their daddy bought for them, no doubt and they're out there being a lot of snot-nosed brats in my opinion and i'm here working my way up the chain and they're going to protest me? really? (applause) >> really? all right. you sit out there and wipe your snotty nose and stay on your ipod and protest all day long and i'll be playing a concert working. >> mike: john, i'm always troubled by you can't come out and say what you really think. [applause] >> that's always a problem. >> how do you feel about it, john? (applause) >> on thursday, the chairman. joint chiefs of staff, talked about the devastating impact that congress's inability to come up with a spending plan is going to have on our

military. >> operations, maintenance and training will be gutted. we'll ground aircraft, return ships to port and sharply curtail training across the force. we will be unable to reset the force, following a decade of war. our readiness will begin to erode. within months we'll be less prepared. within a year, we'll be unprepared. >> mike: wow. pretty serious stuff. joining me with his reaction, retired four star general and author of the new book, "my share of the task" general stanley mcchrystal, great to have you here, quite an honor. [applause]. there's a real anxiety within the military community because what the chairman of the joint chiefs, mark dempsey said, that's pretty stout stuff. how does this affect day-to-day that guy, that woman out there in the military and what's going on in their heads as they look at the sequestration and the effects? >> thanks, governor. i served for more than 34 years and one thing it taught

me is to understand what it is you're affecting. i grew up alongside soldiers over the last decade. i served in combat with countless professionals and that's what marty dempsey is talking about. there are necessarily going to be reductions in defense spending and if they're responsibly done as secretary gate laid out, that's probably fine. if you do a sequestration, that's an irresponsible way to cut and suddenly, you can't cut every part of the defense budget. many parts of them are protected for various reasons. so as marty laid out, you gut people, and when you gut human capital you'll pay a price that can't be caught up for a generation. >> mike: and the difference with sequestration, there's no discretion, it's an across the board, you cut everywhere. it's almost like going into an operating room and instead of surgery removing a tumor we're going to lose 20 pounds of flesh out of this body without regard where it's coming from. that's kind of what this problem is, isn't it? >> it's actually worse than that because instead of giving

the leadership the chance to cut 40 billion dollars over the rest of 2013, anywhere they want, there are certain areas, certain programs that cannot be cut. and therefore, they're going to have to cut out what he described as operations and maintenance money. that's what lets the force operate and that's what let the force train and what's let you really take care of people. >> in your book, "my share of the task" you talk about your career and also, obviously, a lot of it focused on afghanistan, the fact that you led our troops there, and yet, the president of afghanistan, the president of the united states held a press conference, in essence, saying, you know, a lot of things just didn't work out real well. when you hear comments like that, do you feel like the men and women of the military, including yourself, who put your lives on the line and got shot at. do you feel like maybe people are thinking it was for nothing? >> i think there's always that danger. i got an e-mail from a friend of mine there now. i spoke to president karzai on the phone last night and when i got to afghanistan in the spring of 2002, the place was

physically devastated and mentally traumatized and torn apart in everiway. it's very different now. there is he' been huge progress in the rights of women, children in school, development, it's not perfect, lots of problems, but afghans have a lot to lose now and i think what scares afghans more than anything else is a return to the dark days of the taliban or maybe worse. >> mike: is the president, do you think, fully schooled in terms of being able to lead this point of the military? i'm not trying to be just hyper critical of the president, but you know, i'm concerned that when i hear him saying, well, maybe we need to go ahead and get out quicker rather than later and not going to leave troops there. are we exiting too soon to the detriment of the long-term benefit of afghanistan? >> well, leadership is a passion of mine. i teach it at yale. my book is about leadership, it's what i've always been fascinated by and i think leadership is a combination of people. if the president, it's a congress, it's a military

leaders, it's relationships and when we think about leadership, we need to think of collective responsibility to make really sane decisions because they're going to be really, really hard. afghanistan is complex, there is no simple easy solution. visitors used to say to me, okay, general, what's the one thing wrong with afghanistan and i would say you'll understand this as soon as you simplify it that much. >> mike: well, your book is, i think, a great insight into not just your military career, but into the greaters sense of leadership, good for business executives and others. by the way, i want to say something, all of our audience members are going to get a copy of "my share of the task" by general mcchrystal and get to go home with that (applause). you just made them very, very happy. before i let you go, i want to say to you personally, no one gets to wear four stars on his shoulder without an extraordinary level of honor and integrity and skill. >> it's simple, no one hunts with an assault rifle. no one needs ten bullets to kill a deer. and too many innocent people have died already. end the madness now. >> well, if we're worried about people who are angry, there you go. and in the meantime, vice-president joe biden has been busy meeting with a range of groups about gun control, including the n.r.a., which released this statement after their meeting with biden. they said, and i quote. we were disappointed how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe. and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the second amendment, while claiming that no policy proposals would be pre-judged, this task force spent most the time on proposed restrictions, on lawful firearms owners honest, taxpayering hard working americans, it's unfortunate that this administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation's most pressing problems, end of quote.

and the gun debate has unfortunately gotten off the track. when the governor of new york talks about you don't need ten bullets to kill a deer, that's not the point. folks, it's about protecting yourselves and your families. and the second amendment is not to protect your hunting rights, it's to protect you when maybe the police are 30 minutes away. i understand people wanting to stop violence, but we have 100 million more guns in america in the past 20 years and yet, overall, both the murder and violence rate is down by half. i think when we talk about maybe we need a background check for everybody, i've got a better idea, let's have a background check for people who run for office, including the president, vice-president, senate, congress and whatever. [applause] >> the president nominated former nebraska republican senator chuck hagel to be the next secretary of defense. now, to pick his, a lot of criticism because of hagel's

controversial comments about israel and iran in the past. and one of the people speaking out against the nomination is former new york city mayor ed koch he said this and i quote, frankly i thought there was a time he would renege, speaking of the president, on support of israel and comes a little earlier than i thought it would. it's very disappointing, i believe he will ultimately regret it koch said and undoubtedly reduce support for him in the jewish community i don't think that he, the president, worries about na now that the election is over. well, thank you, mayor, for your candor. the mayor's a democrat. but we should be concerned about this appointment because of chuck hagel's soft attitude toward iran, believing that we shouldn't apply sanctions, that we should have unconditional conversations these terrorists and somehow, maybe if we just make nice with them, they won't build a bomb and point it at everybody, but themselves. at the same time while we're going soft, senator hagel has

been one who's been rather harsh on israel. i think he's got it mixed up. at least i think so. finally, a south carolina high school english teacher scott compton underfire for taking a lesson on symbolism too far. here is how maggie, one of his students, described the lesson plan. >> he was teaching us about symbols and gave us examples, such as a cross, symbolizes christianity, and then he took the flag and he said that it was just a symbol of america, it was just a piece of cloth with colors on it and then he threw it on the ground and stomped on it. >> mike: threw the flag on the ground because it's just a symbol, just cloth. you know, when general mcchrystal was sitting here with me a few moments ago and i think about how many times somebody pointed a weapon at him trying to kill him because he was defending that piece of cloth, i don't think that anybody has a right to some p

on it and still say it's just a symbol. it is a symbol, but it's a symbol of something that is incredibly important to many of us, a symbol of a nation that has given all of us the freedom that we enjoy, and the extraordinary lives that we get to live because we're living under that flag. instead of stomping on it, we ought to pay the highest respect to it that it in fact does represent. call that symbolism, but it's a symbolism of something great. [applause] >> sam, the idea of people connecting with each other, social scientists are saying people are so tied to electronic devices that they don't have any community with people, no touch, no feel. is that what you're trying to break loose with young people and you've got to talk to some people with skin on. >> absolutely. and you know, these young

people that we see today are lost. they don't have a vision for their lives, and that's what we want to restore. we want to get young people, as russell said, to get out of that fantasy world and get into reality, but also, to see the significance of themselves the gifts, the abilities that they can affect their world for the the greater, and so, that's what we want to stir up in planet shakers, that you can make a difference, come on, young person, you can do it. >> mike: i just love the term, planet shakers. it really does sort of indicating that you're asking young people to do something that's going to shake up the world and most young people i know, they want to shake up their parents and you're giving them a bigger vision than that, shake up the whole world. >> yes. >> we once had things like the peace corps and encouraged young people to do something unselfish. in a way, that's kind of where you're going with planet shakers? >> yeah, i believe that this

generation, they call them the mow litt millenniums, they want to be a part of the world and make history and go to a different aspect of society and be the answer, not the problem. and i think if we give young people a vision, you know, and see he what they can be and what they can do, literally, we can change this world. we can shake the planet for the good, and not for the bad. >> you guys have children of your own. how do you help your kids disconnect from electronics and all the devices that can display them and to become what you're hoping all of these young people will become? >> yeah, i think it's, you know, with my children, they have some devices that they've played from time to time, but we have in our family, you can't be consumed with it. >> yes. >> it's not to be the whole part of your life. let it be an enjoyment for an hour or so, but not beyond that and get involved in life.

get involved in your youth group. in your church. you know, i remember my friend saying, i want to be the next lebron james and playing nba. and you know, he said i want to be the next lebron james. you know how you become the next lebron. >> he goes, how, dad. >> get out on the court and shoot, shoot, shoot, run, run, run, it's called w-o-r-k, work. [applause]. so we want to get young people activated because they've got energy and vibrance and with our children, i think them being involved in the local youth group it's been such a great thing. you know, involved with the outreach programs, involved with the worship ministry and seeing them flourish and really goes beyond what we actually could see. and now, we're proud of what they're doing. >> mike: that's exciting and i'm looking forward what ought to be a great weekend next weekend in san diego, planet shakers. thank you so much for being here. >> thank you. >> mike: a real honor to have
