supplements could have a greater risk of cardiovascular death. dr. samadi, what does that mean if you take calcium. it affects your heart? >> yes. this is actually a study that came out of jam ma thia this we. they looked at over 300,000 participants and patients over 12 years. they're finding out th finding t calcium increases the risk of cardiovascular death and disease in men. now, it could be very confusing for a lot of people that are watching because for years, we said take your calcium, it's good for prevention of osteoporosis, great for bone health. it's even great for diabetes or high blood pressure, and now we're saying wait a second, don't take too much. > >> eric: are these pills? >> they're supplemental calcium, about a,000 sa thousand milligr. you have to be careful about the way you interpret the studies. a lot of cardiologists are pulling back to perhaps about 500 milligrams, and nobody knoww

exact cause of this. there has been other studies from europeans who also confirm that too much calcium is not good for you. one of the things people have to remember is while these supplements, you're not getting prescriptions for them and they're just vitamins, you should treat them like drugs because they affect the way your body works. calcium is very important in cell signaling, the way the message goes from one cell to another. if you take too much, it will slow down your muscles which is important. i recommend you talk to your doctor, take 5 hun milligram of calcium and take vitamin d which makes it more absorbable. > >> eric: what do you do? dr. samadi says take 500 milligrams. what if you are taking this? what do you tell your doctor? >> this is the second study. he pointed to the other one. last year that was one from europe only it showed increased heart attacks. this one is dramatic. it shows a 20% increase of death

from heart disease in men who are taking more than a gram a day. the question is how much calcium do you need? austin justhe answer is we try to get it in your diet, green leafy vegetables, low fat dairy products, meat. there's ways to get calcium, but for women over menopausal age where there's a high risk of fracture, 50% of women will end up with some fracture related to osteoporosis in their lifetime. we've got to take calcium seriously. if you're deficient, we want you to take it. if you're not deficient in calcium, the question is can a supplement hurt you, and it's starting to look like if you take too much calcium, it can. why would that be? we don't actually know the reasons for that. some cardiologists have said it may be that calcium builds up in the blood vessels. it may build up in the arteries around the body, it may build up in the coronary arteries. calcium is extremely important to the heart. i don't want everyone out there to think we're talking negative here. calcium is what makes your heart

topic, and i'm glad he did. there was a big survey of a small number of people that came from across the pond in england that said four out of five people in ec england say they're moderate drinkers. two out of three said we're not stopping. we're going to keep doing it. there's a big study that says we're too many binge drinkers. 40% of college have at least one episode of binge drinking over the last month. that's tremendous. why am i worried about binge drinking? because binge drinkers tend to begin with. they might be a moderate drinker. they have a weekend where they drink a lot. the new study shows they're damaging their liver. if you're having a couple of drinks a night and on a weekend you're going out on a binge, you may be damaging your liver a lot more than we thought before. fatty liver can caught hepatitis from alcohol. it can even cause cirrhosis or liver damage, lett of liver cells which -- death of liver cells. the liver is grand central station for the body. it metabolizes alcohol, gets rid

of toxins, but it's also responsible for our immune function and every other organ in the body. we cannot damage it with alcohol. >> but you know the studies that have said a glass of wine is good for you and so if you have two or three glasses of wine a week, is that going to affect your liver. >> no. >> jamie: are some people more prone than others? >> no. i'm glad you brought it up. the question is to drink or not to drink. common sense prevails. if you drin two o drink two or e glasses of red wine, we've shown that it has antioxidants. we need a bit of alcohol. >> jamie: i'm going to look like 12 years old eventually if i have that one or two glasses a week. >> socially drinking is okay. if you drink more than two glasses of any kind of drink. it also depends on what you're talking about. there's a difference between wine, beer, and liquor. there's a difference between women and men. women don't have that kind of enzyme in the stomach called

alcohol dehydrogenase. they can absorb alcohol much faster and get drunk much earlier. we talk about the number of years and your body weight. all of those are important factors that play a role. what alcohol does to the body. from the time it goes into your system from the mouth to see esophagus, it can cause cancer. it can cause fatty liver meaning that liver is supposed to digest all this fast. if it's busy taking care of the alcohol, the fat gets deposted and eventually becomes cirrhosis which is the scarring of your liver. i don't know if you've seen people that bleed from the esophagus. it's a deadly problem. social drinking, one or two glasses of red wine a week, white wine, doesn't matter. too much is addictive. it affects your pancreas, liver, brain, the rest of the system. >> be honest with your doctor. tell him what you're actually drinking. it can get out of control. >> you always double whatever

>> eric: back now with sunday housecall. gluten free diets ront rise. how do you know if you're one of the 1 in 100 americans who surer suffers from celiac disease and you need to avoid wheat. >> this is my favorite topic and the segment of the day. so many people e-mail and called about this. we are talking about celiac disease. we have covered in the past celiac disease which is really auto immune disease. you take gluten. gluten causes some sort of immune cascade, attacks the lining of jury gi system, and then you have other problems, abdomennal cramps, bloatin bloa, diarrhea. we're not talking about celiac disease. we're talking about non-celiac but gluten sensitivity. gluten itself directly causes inflammation, not through the immune system. with celiac disease we have anti-body tests, we have tests to find out if they have the disease or not.

genetic testing. with this one, with with this gluten sensitivity, it's very difficult to really diagnose. patients go from doctor to doctor. a lot of times they may called mental. it's really not true. they're more upset. i think this is a real ep tipt. >> what is gluten. is it wheat. >> it's found in wheat. we have pizza, serial, ice cream, nuts, all over. >> eric: can't get away from it. >> cereal, bread. you can't get away from it. you give them wheat, they get really sick because the gluten causes a reaction. you take it away for a couple months, they feel better. there is a real entity and you've got to look at the labels and find out if that affects you or not. >> eric: dr. siegel, if you've got these symptoms, you feel sick and with gi issues, should you go on a gluten free diet? >> first of all, i want to add a couple things. gluten is found in barley and riimean rerye.

when i want to check for celiac, i do anti-body tests. 6% of the population we believe has a gluten sensitivity. if i did the test, it may be negative. i can't look in your gi tract because it won't show the same break down of the intest anyone. it's not going to be there. it's a clinical diagnosis. i like to believe my patients. they say hey, doc, when i have that wheat, when i have that barley, i don't feel well. i feel fatigued, i have a headache, i have diary. you know what? i try them on a gluten-free diet. we've been eating it for 10,000 years. > >> eric: dhow did we suddenly like in the last couple years find out about gluten? >> a lot of people had irritable bowel syndrome. they had a lot of problems with digestion and we couldn't figure out why. we started to looking i look fog else. it's something that any reputable internist or

dripping from the nose. we get it in winter because it's dry. low humidity causes it. if you have that problem for more than 20 minutes, you need to see a physician. if it's coming from upper, it's something that an ent doctor has to see right away. you can lubricate your nose. you can stop picking your nose. use vaseline on your nose. hold your nose and tilt your head back. those are the key tips. it can happen from a sinus infection. >> jamie: i'm sorry. the best tip of the day. folks, as we're driving along side you, please don't be picking your nose. go ahead. >> in the winter time, especially with sinusitis, with cold and flu, you have dry mucus membrane, a lot of times you blow he your nose and you can rupture those capillaries and cause bleeding. the worst thing to do is lie
