be noncontroversial. >> why wouldn't we want to make it more difficult for a dangerous person to get his or her hand on a gun? why wouldn't we want to close the loophole that allows as many as 40% of all gun purchases to take place without a background check? why wouldn't we do is that. >> now teachers and victim's family members were among the crowd yesterday supporting the president's proposals. >> this is a nonpartisan issue. and moms are coming together much like mothers against drunk driving to fight for stronger gun laws. >> now, senate leader harry reid plans to call for votes on proposed legislation which would include expanded background checks as well as harcher penalties for gun trafficking. but the bill will most likely not have a ban on assault weapons. now, as you remember, senate democrats recently dropped that ban saying it wouldn't pass. now, a number of republican senators, including mike lee of utah says they will block a vote on gun legislation and they're criticizing the president for, quote: using the

newtown tragedy. in a statement he released he wrote in part it is deeply unfortunate that he continues to use the tragedy at newtown as a back drop for pushing legislation that would have done nothing to prevent that horrible crime. congress will be back in session during the second week of april. pattie and ainsley back to you. >> elizabeth, thank you. the president's gun control push is exactly what rand paul talked about this morning. last night he was hoont. the senator taking issue with both republicans and democrats over the gun debate. >> hey. paul says some lawmakers are using the tragedy in newtown to push their own agendas. the senator going to be specifically call out the president for the legislation that he is putting forth. >> i think it's a mistake for either side to politicize this, you know. the president uses them as a back drop and drama for getting some kind of political will, but my question to the president is call me if any of your reforms would have saved those kids at sandy hook. if anything he is proposing would have changed the outcome, i will listen to

him. i haven't heard one proposal from him or harry reid that would have saved one life. i'm all for saving lives and i think it's a real and horrible tragedy, but i think it's a mistake to play these victims and the emotions of their tragedy when nothing he is proposing would change one iota of what happened. >> another heat deed bait down on capitol hill, immigration. that's what charles krauthammer is talking about this morning. here he is giving his take on the cuts to border security saying this is a move by the administration that is, quote: completely unnecessary. >> this is getting so cynical, i think it really isn't working for the administration. they are trying to make sure that the sequester is used as an excuse for stuff that is completely unnecessary, starting with the white house tours which were cancelled. they thought that would work against republicans and everybody is saying, look, we know how much a astonishing waste the government is involved in every year, 3.6

trillion-dollar spending and you're telling me that you can't afford to have tours at the white house? they are telling us that in the billions of dollars that homeland security has it can't cancel a conference here or there? and travel here or there? and use the money to make sure that the border is is not left unguarded? it's absolutely incredible, literally so. i think it makes the administration look cynical. so as a device to try to scapegoat the republicans it's not working. >> earlier this week the president said he expects immigration legislation by the end of the summer. and it's time now for your first degree weather update with maria. >> when is this deep freeze going to be over? >> good news for people in the south. you are finally waking up to a morning without freeze warnings in places like alabama, mississippi, past couple of mornings some of

you have been waking up with temperatures below 32 degrees. take a look at the temperatures today 50 over in new orleans. 44 in atlanta. in the 60's across parts of texas. this is a much milder morning for many of you across parts of the south. as we head into the afternoon, also feeling more like spring. just shy of 80 degrees in the city of dallas and san antonio. 74 over in new orleans. we're in the middle six now or at least expecting to be there this afternoon in the city of atlanta. some of this mild area is going to be fueling showers and thunderstorms across portions of oklahoma. portions of arkansas as we head into the afternoon. you will need the umbrella out there. some of these thunderstorms could produce severe weather across parts of the western panhandle and oklahoma. damming wind gusts large hail and isolated tornadoes will be a concern later on today and into the evening hours out here across that part of the country it will organize and head eastbound. for easter sunday we could be looking at widespread

>> chilling details of the sandy hook elementary. rick leventhal has the information. >> new information about the gunman who carried out the new town shooting. adam lanza's home more than 1600 rounds of bullets for various handguns, shotguns were discovered stored in a safe, shoebox closet, duffle bag and file cabinet. knives, bayonet, spear and three samurai swords. he took three guns with him in the rampage. the guns purchased by lanza's mother. the gun fired off more than 150 shots in less than five sandy hookide sandy hook elementary school. this father who lost a 7-year-old son says is he not surprised. >> most of this is pretty high level stuff that why are aware of all right. it just reminds me of what happened, you know that a gunman stormed his way into an elementary school and shot to death 26 people, 20

starting to understand this on the molecular level. normal cells see concrete some hormone called cv 47. it's basically a flag that tells the body, the immune system don't kill me. make sure i travel through the body. cancer cells over the years got smart and they're secreting the same cv 47. they are tricking our body. that's why they grow. this research is blocking the signal from the cancer cells. now we are using our own immune system and soldiers to kill the cancer cells. that's very exciting. they have done this in leukemia and lymphoma but also trying to do bladder cancer and 10 out of 10 miles were able to be cured from cancer. unbelievable. >> we should stress this has always been stressed in mice so far. no human trials yet. >> that's true but that's a great great start. we're hoping in the future there would be no more surgeries or less number of surgeries and radiation and use our own system to fight

to plead guilty. prosecutors say the defense has refused to turn over information needed to evaluate the deal. they say it's hard it to believe the plea offer is genuine and at this time any type of deal is unlikely. under the offer holmes would have pleaded guilty in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. a group of police officers refused service at a virginia buffalo wild wings because their guns were showing. their server said it was a gun-free establishment. the officers even showed their badges to that server and were still denied. the restaurant's manager is now apologizing saying the incident shouldn't have happened because their gun policy excludes police officers. >> lawmakers in cash-strapped states are now there seeing dollar signs. washington and colorado have both legalized recreational marijuana use and now there is a new push to reap millions in taxes from the truck. washington state estimates it could bring in more than $565 million in 2017. one colorado lawmaker says a tax could bring inasmuch

well, it is. but the run off at the start of the year was so sharp there has been few alarming headlines coming from the middle east and the americans are using less gasoline and the u.s. has a lot of it that's why some analysts do not see the national average the $4 this year. that could be great news for the economy. some americans may actually find themselves spending their gas savings on other things. but, the word of caution here is that hurricane season right around the corner and any flare up in the gulf of mexico in the rigs there can send pump prices back north. >> it's so unpredictable. you had that one explosion refining and cause so many problems. it will be nice to see. nice if it didn't hit $4 like others thought it might. >> a trend of lower gas prices. >> generation y as they're calling it or the millennials take your pick finally ready to buy a house. >> 1982 to 2001. i always get confused by all the generations the millennials are coming to
