hope you all had a fantastic easter. i'm heather. >> i'm ainsley. it is monday, april fool's day, april 1. thank you for watching "fox & friends" first. the top five stories making news at this hour. a texas district attorney was so concerned for his safety he carried a gun with him at all times. now elected officials in kauffman county texas are getting extra security. all of this after a couple were found murdered in their home this weekend.

police have not found a suspect or motive but say the shooting does not appear random. >> it appears it was a targeted attack. it was the mcclellan family. the best thing we can do is remain calm. >> police are investing if those -- are investigating if those deaths are connected to the murder of the assistant d.a. attorney. >> a massive pileup on a virginia highway involving 95 cars leaving three people dead and 25 hurt. there were a total of 17 crashes within a within-mile stretch of interstate on interstate 27 caused by a heavy fog. drivers say it was so thick you could barely see a few feet in front of you. at the center of the map a couple of trucks collided. they caught fire and started a terrifying reaction. >> all you could hear was bam, bam, bam. and all you could hear was explosions. >> we could hear the continual wrecking behind

us. just screeching and metal, just a lot of banging. >> three people killed in that. it took hours to clear away that highway. >> one person is dead, three others injured after an accident at this arkansas nuclear power plant yesterday. a spokesperson for energy core says a generator fell as it was being moved out from one of the plant's buildings. no nuclear material was released at the time and all of the plant's units have been shut down. >> this prediction in washington won't be scrambled by the sequester. the white house eastwill start 0 this morning. families will join president obama and the first lady for games and stories. pope francis leading an easter mass. he broke tradition entering the crowd in an uncovered pope mobile, kissing babies, shaking hands and shared a long embrace with

a disabled boy. afterwards he delivered his easter message from the papal balcony calling for world peace. >> see those babies and people hugged and kissed. >> louisville university announcing its guard had a successful surgery after a horrific injury last night. you may have missed it when it happened but we have more on what happened. >> the school went into the final four but the entire team is at a loss coming to grips with a sight no one thought they would see. the point guard's leg buckled as he went for a shot. he had the bone reset and a rod inserted into his leg. despite his pain, ware cared more about his team. >> i don't think anyone

with what we had to witness could have overcome it if it wasn't for kevin ware saying to the guys 12 times i'll be fine. win the game. >> the teammates wiping away tears after witnessing ware's injury. players are still struggling to describe what they were going through. >> i almost didn't feel nothing. it was really hard for me to like pull myself together because i didn't ever think in a million years i would see something like that. >> ware will remain in indianapolis until at least tuesday. he is expected to have a lengthy rover but the injury is not expected to be career-ending. >> it's another sign the u.s. is not taking north korea's threats lightly. f-22 fighter jets being sent to south korea after the north said it's in a state of war. kelly wright live in washington with the latest. >> the tension continues to mount between north korea and the united states, the

provocative talk from north korea is not being taken lightly at all. the united states is watching and acting to defend its ally south korea as well as its interests. the united states defense department confirms f-22 stealth fighter jets are in south korea to participate in military drills there. the f-22 raptors, an advance fighter jet that can evade radar detection. the u.s. military command in south korea issued a statement urging north korea to restrain its provocative actions, stating north korea will achieve nothing by threats or provocations which will only further isolate north korea and undermine international efforts to ensure peace and stability in northeast asia. north korea leader kim jong un continues to disregard warnings from the international community. during a parliamentary session with legislators, kim and party officials declare that building nuclear weapons and the economy is north korea's top priority and even vowed

more nuclear strikes from south korea and the u.s. the north korean news agency stating in an article state of war from this time on, the north-south relations will be entering the state of war and all issues raised between the north and the south will be handled accordingly. >> it's not an empty threat. i wouldn't be concerned about them hitting the mainland u.s. right now, even entering u.s. territory. i think the real threat is to what north korea might be boxing itself into. >> meantime the u.s. continues to flex military might near north korea in a show of force that any strike from north korea at all will not be tolerated and will not go unanswered. >> thank you so much, kelly. it's time to look at who's talking. this morning we're talking about immigration. a deal was struck between business and labor groups over the weekend which could pave the way, many say, for reform. >> that agreement assures guest workers would be paid

no less than the median wage in their industry. despite what's considered a major breakthrough, lawmakers are insisting no deal has been reached just yet. here's democratic senator chuck schumer. >> with the agreement between business and labor, every major policy issue has been resolved on the gang of eight. now everyone, we've all agreed we're not going to come to a final agreement until we see draft legislative language and we agree on that. but we drafted some of it already. the rest of it will be drafted this week. and so i am very, very optimistic that we will have an agreement among the eight of us next week. we will notdom final agreement until -- not come to final agreement until we look at all the legislative language. he's correctly pointing out that language hasn't been fully drafted. there will be a little kerfuffle but i don't think we expect problems. >> congressman jeff flake says the deal is not done yet and still has to get members of his party to follow along with that

agreement. listen. >> we're much closer with labor and business agreeing on this guest worker plan. that doesn't mean we've crossed every i or dotted every t or vice versa. we've still got a wades to go in terms of looking -- a ways to go in terms of looking at the language. but we're closer certainly. if we can get the language right -- and i think we'll stick together as a gang, and i hope we can pull some republicans our way. i think a number of them are with us already. i don't want to talk about walking away. i don't intend to do that. >> schumer also said he's confident a deal will be reached this week. the president said it will happen before the end of the month. we'll see. >> let's talk about weather. time for your weather update with maria molina. maria, we're finally getting a taste of spring. >> just a little bit across the east. enjoy it while you have it because you're going to be seeing changes. colder air moving into parts of the midwest. all thanks to our cold

front which will be bringing in a chance of showers in the northeast and parts of the southeast. temperatures, 46 in new york city, the 50's across the carolinas, 50 in the city of dallas. by the time we head into this afternoon in texas, you'll be enjoying warm temperatures. 86 degrees for your high temperature in san antonio. we may get to 60 degrees in new york city. we have yet to do that so far this season. 40 will be the high temperature in chicago. look at minneapolis. a very chilly day. 36 degrees for your high temperature. showers across parts of new england. snow on the backside of this system across northern parts of maine. we could be seeing lake-effects behind this storm system. heavier rain across the carolinas, georgia. there is a chance on the tail end of this stimulator on this -- tail end of this system we could be seeing storms across parts of oklahoma. we have the start of baseball season today.

his last internet activity. last seen two weeks ago. a recent economic uptick isn't helping many homeowners as the amount of foreclosures continues to skyrocket. 1.5 million homes have been foreclosed on this year, up 9% from this time in 2012. >> ainsley, thank you so much. being made in america is paying off in more ways than one. lauren simonetti is here to explain. we know it helps keep jobs in the united states but what else? >> it's great for stock prices as many of these companies that do most of their revenue and most of their sales here in the u.s. made in the u.s.a. marketing tag we like applies to the stock prices as well as this stuff that is american-made they do make. you've got europe mired in debt, china cooling down, other emerging markets cooling down. so stocks of american companies that do most of their sales here are performing better than those that do half abroad.

for example, netflix, its shares are up 104% since the start of the year. if you take qualcomm, another big tech company, it gets 97% of its revenue abroad, its stock up this year but only 8%. >> toys and products advertised being made in america -- >> people love it. >> this long winter has been hard for our health, good for c.v.s. and other pharmacies. >> great for pharmacies because march is a month that can go either way. last year we had the warmest march on record. this year it's been really cold. thank goodness it's over. people are sick and with allergies. it's great for the pharmacies out there. for the retailers, we're not buying summer dresses and flip-flops. a lot of these inventories have bloated inventory so we might see sales sooner and deeper than normal.

gunned down in an ohio church parking lots by his own son. witnesses say they heard two men arguing loudly and then several gunshots as mass was letting out. police have taken that shooter into custody. >> they are sick with fear. hundreds more dental patients expected to line up today in tulsa, oklahoma for h.i.v. testing. nearly 7,000 patients of this guy, dr. w. harrington potentially exposed after the dentist's office said to have seriously unsanitary conditions. >> do you throw away food because you're worried it's going to spoil? you're not alone if you do that. americans throw away 30 billion pounds of food every year but a lot of that food might not be bad after all. how do you know what's safe to eat and when you should toss it? here to explain is our cookbook author and expert for national frozen and refrigerated food expert.

hey, alison. let's talk about grocery shopping. when do we know as far as expiration dates are concerned when we need to throw things out? >> if it says expired by, that's the last date the product should be eaten or used. you really need to follow that. when it says use by, the manufacture sets that date. that is actually when the product is at its peak quality. you can still use it after that date but it's going to be the best by that "use by" date. >> sell by? >> sell by is for the store to determine how long to keep it on the store shelves. if you're going to buy chicken or eggs and it says sell by and it's after that date, still on the display, don't buy it. >> sometimes you can get a discount. it will have a red sticker on it and that's okay. >> if you're going to use it like really quickly or

refrigerate it, you can do that. >> you say buy with specific foods in mind. go to the grocery store, take a list with you. >> absolutely. you're going to end up wasting food. also people forget that frozen food is actually real food. buying things like frozen blueberries or strawberries, you can pull out what you need so you're not going to be throwing away. >> how long can we freeze foods? >> it depends. we're going to talk about a few things. everything is a little bit different. deli meat, you can keep that in the refrigerator for about three days after that date marked on your package. you can freeze deli meat up to a month. >> if we cook chicken and i put it in the refrigerator, how long can it sit in there? >> only about one to two days. if you freeze it, you can keep it obviously for another month. >> what about eggs in the refrigerator? >> eggs kuhlly can last --

eggs can last three weeks after that date but they have to be in the coldest part in the refrigerator. >> what about bread when you know if it's bad? >> obviously look at it and if there's mold. there is a squeeze test. if it still feels moist, you're going to have to slice into french bread. look for mold. >> what if you freeze bread? we would pull it out -- my mother did this -- and it would have ice all over it. we would thaw it out and it was good. >> you can freeze bread three to six months. some of the breads come frozen. buying bagels, you can freeze them and take out and portion. >> let's go back to the freezer. do you have to have a zip lock bag for the freezer or store it in a regular bag? >> i recommend to have the freezer bag and also it will have a space on there

to write the date and the name of the item so you remember when you -- like if you freeze chicken, when actually you put it in there so you'll know. >> how long do you have if you freeze chicken, if you freeze sandwiches? >> for chicken or ground beef, you should be good to freeze that for three to six months. >> what about baked goods? cakes? sometimes if i bake a cake, i'll put half in the freezer. >> with pastries, two to three months. mark on your zip lock bag. squeeze out the air to prevent freezer burn. >> is it okay to eat the top of a wedding cake a year later? >> it really s. -- it really is. >> thanks. it is 25 after the top of the hour. coming up, a classic almost every kid reads in school, but is third grade too

by the news. we can't believe it. >> those who knew the couple say they were a happy couple. >> very nice guy, engaging. >> this latest shooting follows the january murder of assistant district attorney mark hass. the shooting spree left folks in this town on edge. >> it happened in the square and that was such a shocker. but to know you're not safe in your own home. >> a very serious thing -fplgt we need to be more careful in our community and more observant and sphot assume because we have a -- and not assume we're safe. >> officials believe the murders are somehow connected but don't have a motive. >> this appears to be targeted. so i don't think the community at large is in danger. the best thing we can do is remain calm, remain supportive of the mcclellan family and those handling the investigation and continue to look out for each other.

tuesday, you won't get out of the 40's. a significant cooldown by 16 degrees in a span of 24 hours across the city. big cooldown behind this frontal system. today showers across parts of new england, great lakes, parts of the carolinas and georgia. areas of heavy rain out here. on the tail end of this front, we will see thunderstorms. some of these could produce severe weather. keep this in mind if you live in lubbock, texas. some could produce isolated tornadoes and large hail. it is a very slight risk. we're not spefbgting a massive severe -- expecting a massive severe weather outbreak. lake-effect snow watch has been issued across parts of upstate new york because six to ten inches of snow can fall out here. that's north of syracuse. otherwise tigers playing the twins today in minneapolis. it is going to be 32

the crew? >> i have not seen that one. >> the final four is now set. michigan and syracuse will square off next weekend. number-one louisville will face wichita state. but everyone is talking about this. an extremely gruesome injury. guard kevin ware's leg buckled as he went to block a three-point shoot. he broke the bone in his leg. players and coaches and everybody who saw that, many of them at least forced to wipe away tears after they witnessed that horrific injury. the school overnight said he had surgery and it was successful. it is not expected to be a career-ending injury. good news there. >> baseball season officially underway. the first game of the season taking place last night. the astros beating the razors 8-2. the astros first game in the american league. >> it is now 40 minutes after the hour. wouldn't it be nice to write off your daughter's

>> good morning. it is 44 minutes after the hour. what does a college degree get you these days? for a whole lot of students a minimum-wage job. about 284,000 college grads are working for minimum wage. that's a 70% increase from just ten years ago. a seattle school rewriting homer's odyssey to make the language more appropriate for students. a third grade class was set to perform the play until a parent complained about some of the dialogue, and now it's changing.

okay. ainsley? >> thank you, heather. some are asking. -plt wouldn't it be nice if you could write off plastic surgery? i'm not asking that. just some i hear. what about your daughter's wedding? those are some of the unusual tax deduction that is people have tried and gotten away with. adam has all the details for us. adam, that's not my question. >> don't shoot the messenger. are you ready from this? from chest implants to charity cash there are expenses you can deduct from your taxes but be warned, the i.r.s. is watching. a financial analyst says it's not as easy as filling out the form. for instance, an exotic dancer had surgery to enhance her breasts. let's say it was a big job and added ten pounds to her overall weight. she claimed the cost of the breast implant surgery as a deduction. the i.r.s. said no.

chesty appealed and saying her implants were like a deductible like a uniform because they met two i.r.s. criteria: they were required as a condition of her employment and second they were unsuitable for everyday use. i'm not touching that one with a ten-foot pole. you decide. then there is the woman with 70 cats who claimed 12 thousand bucks in deductions. the i.r.s. allowed that because the woman was a foster pet caregiver working for charity. not so easy. she had to submit a letter from the charity for expense deductions exceeding $250. the i.r.s. will allow those deductions if you are providing services to a registered 501-c-3 charity organization. you can deduct that lazy friend on your couch if that lazy friend lives with you for a full year and has no money. they can earn no more than than $3,800 and you have to

express empathy meaning they have it but don't have the social ability to express it. you can teach them the cues thousand interact. >> -- the cues how to interact. >> it can be a learned behavior? >> absolutely. the earlier we teach children to act in an empathetic way the better. >> you say the treatment is beneficial? there is no cure. but what is the treatment? >> the treatment is intervention. it has to do with therapy. some people believe it has to do with changing diet, a diet low in gluten has been looked at, not proven scientifically. the earlier we teach children to overcome social problems -- because, again, autism is a problem with interacting. it is a problem with social excuse. it is problems with social cues and social skills. >> teachers are saying there are more children with autism than 20 years
