smith was a veteran officer. more on this as we get it. >> a $200,000 reward is being offered for information leading to a conviction in the murder of a texas district attorney and his wife. mike and cynthia mcclelland were remembered yesterday at an emotional memorial service. law enforcement officers, public officials, friends and family were among hundreds of mourners. >> they were beautiful and amazing, and mike -- a lot of people thought of him as a very hard man. and he was. he was a hard man. but he had a heart, he had such a big heart. >> when cynthia told you she loved you, she loved you with every ounce of her being. >> left behind a huge family. the mcclellands were killed in their own home last weekend. no arrests have been made. the police are focusing on the aryan brotherhood. >> hol road and the nation -- hollywood mourning the death of the

famed movie critic roger ebert. he passed away yesterday after announce he was undergoing radiation treatment for recurrence of cancer. he influenced movie goers across america. >> a security failure at new york's jfk airport, t.s.a. workers let an airport employee pwhaord a plane without -- board a plane without searching him or asking to see his boarding pass. they initially turned him away since he didn't have proper i.d. then they saw him using his work key to get through locked doors and then they waited almost an hour before calling the police. the man was arrested on the plane just 15 minutes before takeoff. >> listen to this one. president obama is under fire this morning for a comment that he made about california's attorney general pamela harris. he was speaking at a

fund-raiser and the president said this -- quote -- "she's brilliant, she's dedicated. she's tough. she also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general. it's true. come on." the president also called harris a great friend and great supporter for many years. she served as california's attorney general since 2011 and she's considered a rising star in the democratic party. she's often mentioned as a potential candidate for governor. bet michelle is not too happy about that one. that is your five at 5. >> north korea taking their threat to a whole new level. they have now placed missiles within range of u.s. bases in the area. we're live in washington with the very latest on this developing story. >> we are hearing reports north korea has positioned two of its missiles on mobile launchers along the east coast of the country. these reported rockets are

mid range weapons meaning they are capable of reaching not only south korea and japan but there's also the possibility of reaching guam in the pacific ocean. in addition to the tougher u.n. sanctions on north korea and the joint military exercise we've been seeing the country run with south korea, the u.s. beefed up a dispense missile system in guam built to shoot down any sort of medium or short ballistic missiles. this is the first time it's ever been deployed. the u.s. intelligence officials from the u.s., japan and south korea are monitoring the movement of the weapons. and we're hearing from the defense secretary this week about just how seriously he is taking the situation. >> also the threats that -- that the north koreans leveled directly at the united states regarding our base in guam, threatened hawaii, threatened the west coast of the united states. we take those threats seriously. we have to take those

places like washington, d.c. to some rain. you do need some extra time out here. parts of new jersey, parts of maryland and also delaware, you're going to see some rain throughout the morning for your morning commute as you head out the door to work. new york city, you'll be seeing those showers later this morning. that storm system is a relatively quick mover. by this afternoon we'll be seeing drier conditions behind it across parts of the northeast. across parts of florida, heavy rain associated with the same system. temperature-wise, we're looking better across the eastern part of the country. in the 60's today across parts of georgia, carolinas. 61 should be your high temperature in new york city. if phoenix, arizona, 92 degrees for your high temperature today. we do have the ncaa tournament this weekend. atlanta, you're looking much warmer, into the 70's for saturday and sunday. the game of course is

indoors but if you're traveling out there, it looks pretty good. >> thank you very much, maria. we appreciate it. what we were just discussing, some stories that you can bank on this morning. a new record for government aid. disability payments just hit an all-time high. lauren simonetti from the fox business network joins us with those details. happy friday. >> happy friday to you too. on this note, very disturbing trend. a record 8.85 million americans were on disability in march. that's according to the social security administration. it was the 194th straight month the number of american workers collecting the federal checks increased. it has been increasing since 1997. it means one person collects disability for every 13 that work full time. figure out the math, there is about 116 million americans working full time. on a day like today when we get the government's jobs report you've got to pay attention to a key data point in that report.

the labor participation rate. the surgeon's disability payouts usually correlate with a drop in the labor participation rate. as the number of unemployed americans fall, the number receiving federal disability rises and the thinking is in some cases it's easier to go on disability than it is to try to get a job. >> just one city as an example: chicago, three times as many people are on disability -- no. there are three times as many americans taking disability payments than people living in chicago. >> a good way to put it. about three million living in that city but triple that nationally receiving federal disability. >> people that like beef or pork that may get confused when you go shopping, they're doing something to clear things up. >> we're a little bit confused by this. when you go to the food store this summer, meat packaging may look different. that's because the pork and beef industries are renaming more than 350 cuts of meat to give them more consumer appeal in time for

grilling season. for example, new labels would give different, trendier, simpler names of the protein. say goodbye to pork chops and hello to rib eyed chops. beef chuck pot roast becomes denver roast and beef loin top sirloin steak becomes top sirloin steak. new labels list the characteristics of the meat, the part of the animals they come from. the new names are official. they have been approved by the usda but compliance is voluntary. pay attention if you see that. i'm always confused. >> the pork butt is actually the shoulder and it will be called the boston roast. >> we just figured that out. a lot of research on that one. >> thank you, lauren. people, if you're grilling for the weekend. >> these government employees have way too much time on their hands. it is time to brew on this. it is friday.

hour. a gas explosion forcing oklahoma residents out of their home. this was the scene last night when a natural gas compression statement blew up. no one was hurt. no word on when people will be allowed back in their home. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> rescue workers calling off their search for an alabama shipyard worker blown into the mobile river by strong winds yesterday. those winds also caused a crippled carnival cruise ship to break loose from a nearby dock. carnival confirming it will not pay back the government more than $4 million in rescue costs that had been spent in the past five years, including when the triumph left thousands of passengers stranded for days back in the month of february. so we, the taxpayers, picking up that tab. >> picking up a lot of tabs lately. quick headlines: two texas inmates who escaped from prison are back behind bars this morning. brian tucker and john king

>> welcome back. time for a segment we call what the hill. despite budget cuts because of the sequester, the government has just hired a new six-figure employee. the department of health and human services hosting hiring a public affairs specialist making $136,000 per year to repair the image of obamacare. a new report says less than half of the illegal immigrants crossing the border are actually caught.

less than the government accountability office's january estimate of 64%. >> a few hours from now the march jobs report comes out and expecting 200,000 jobs to be added to the unemployment rate -- rather jobs to be added and the unemployment rate to stay at 7.7%. those numbers may prove worse after last week's jobless claims jumped to 385,000. let's break down the numbers with cheryl casone from the fox business network. how far are we away from where the jobs numbers need to be? >> we need to be adding more than 300,000 jobs every month and we're not anywhere near those levels. to be steady at 7.7% unemployment rate, which the expectation for this morning, we need to be down to 6.5%. that is what the fed, ben bernanke, discusses. it has been a rough week for data for jobs. that's private-sector jobs being added. the expectations were for a

much higher number than we got. we got 158,000, heather. this shows us that companies are not hiring. >> we need to be at least double that number? >> absolutely. >> he talk to a whole lot of employers. what are they saying about why they feel confident or more likely don't feel confident in the economy? >> it's a host of things. it's regulation. it's health care. it is uncertainty about the economy. >> that's a huge one. it's the markets too. >> these businesses -- remember small businesses are the main growth when it comes to job, the main growth engine in this country. small businesses are not confident. almost 80% of small business owners say they don't know if the economy is getting better. >> the u.s. chamber of commerce surveyed its members. 79% believe the economy is on the wrong track all together. >> as far as this number we'll be looking at today, we might have a rough market open and rough market day if the a.d.p.

number is right. sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong. i'm not going to lie here. if we get a bad number from the march jobs report -- and that is likely -- you're going to see a rough market open and you're also going to see a ripple effect of that with different pieces of the report. there's one thing i look at, it's the underemployed in this nation. the underemployed, maybe they're working part time, in and out of the job market. they're disenfranchised. that number has been remarkably high over the last three years. >> there was a recent study about recent college grads. i think half of them are working in jobs that don't require a college degree. >> right. >> their unemployment rate is like 13%. >> that young 20-something they have a much higher unemployment rate especially the male demographic in that rate as well. if you look at demographics overall, we're seeing the services sector, you know

jobs for food and things like that, that is the services sector, that's been one of the better numbers we've been seeing. there is concerns today about the services sector number being a little bit lower. there's a lot of nuances to the report today i'm very concerned about. goldman sachs saying that they expect this number to be much lower than the overall expectation. 200k is the reuters estimate. goldman sachs well below that. >> the situation is certainly not good. you look at the workforce participation rate, a lot fewer people are working today than there used to be and that excuse the numbers. the numbers actually worse than they seem. cheryl casone from the fox business network, thanks for coming in. it is 26 minutes after the hour. coming up, unbelievable video to show you. an off-duty cop rushing to the t.s.a.'s rescue after a woman attempts to bust through the gate. >> this may be a first for prince william. he is snubbed by a girl. wait till you hear what

alive. rescuers heard the 18-year-old's cry for help and found her clinging to a cliff dazed and dehydrated but otherwise okay. but another member of the rescue team was hurt saving her. >> he has a head injury. he's responsive but it is a serious injury enough that it took priority for a moment as we had paramedics on the ground with kendall and were able to airlift the sherrif deputy to the house simultaneously. >> her friend nicholas was found wednesday night not far from where kendall was located. >> indiana is becoming the first state to push legislation requiring armed guards in all schools. the bill would require one armed employee in every public and charter school in a state. that armed officer could be police or could be a teacher or principal. the move comes in response to the deadly sandy hook

elementary school shooting in connecticut that left 20 children dead. that bill now moves to indiana's house of representatives. >> more fallout from the rutgers basketball video showing the coaching staff cursing and throwing balls at players. after firing head coach mike rice, assistant coach jimmy martelli resigned. he can be seen on tape acting in the same manner as former coach rice. despite being fired, rice will reportedly get a $100,000 bonus for finishing out the 2012-2013 season. >> here's a question for you parents out there. would you want your young children watching this movie on an airplane? >> you want to prepare yourself for this one. >> a woman was tortured to death. that is a clip from the pg-13 movie called alex cross. parents of a four-year-old

within range of a u.s. base in guam. doug luzader is covering the latest for us. >> how far is north korea willing to go? that is really the question that is driving u.s. foreign policy right now. there are signs that the north has been moving missiles around to perhaps better position them for an attack on south korea or other u.s. allies in the region. the pentagon this week has been ramping up missile defenses in that part of the world as the state department tries to figure out what is going to happen next. >> we are taking the appropriate steps in terms of defense of the united states, in terms of defense of our allies, so the republic of korea and japan. we are making those clear. and we are watching very closely, obviously. >> watching closely but trying to figure out what north korean leader kim jong un is going to do next

>> maria is tracking spring showers making their way up the east coast but warmer temperatures. >> we're talking warmer temperatures behind the storm system. that is at least something to look forward to after you have to deal with the rain across places like d.c., new york city, we're expecting showers later today. and heavy rain across parts of south florida. the storm system is a relatively quick mover. that is the other good news. once it comes in during the morning hours across the mid-atlantic and southern parts of new england, it will be out by this afternoon leaving drier conditions. sunshine should be returning along with warmer temperatures. across florida some of these storms have been very heavy. you're talking about slowdowns possible through your morning commute as you head to work. you're going to need the umbrella throughout parts of florida because we think those showers and thunderstorms could last throughout the afternoon hours. 61 degrees for a high temperature new york city, middle 60's atlanta and raleigh. good news as well. we're starting to see a warmup out there as well.
