>> eric: we'll begin -- >> who is batman. >> eric: have you heard of this? overuse of the antibiotics. there is enough antibiotics to four out of five americans. west virginia doubled the number that are prescribed in alaska. how do you know when enough is enough or too much? >> four out of five american, 258 americans in 2010 were described antibiotic -- prescribed antibiotics. we know that there is overuse built in to this. we talk on the show how the sinus infections are viral. bronchitis is viral. upper respiratory is viral. the patients and doctors everywhere are reaching for that z-pack. that is what this shows. i talk to dr. laurie hicks,
7:31 am
from the cdc. infeck, disease specialist. this is in the new england journal but this is a full-penaled study. she says the antibiotics are precious resource, not a magic bullet. that is a great quote. if we don't preserve the precious resource we will end up with resistance. there are 20 reanalysis tent bugs that give us problems. side effects, diarrhea, allergies. we have to reserve the antibiotics for when they are needed. this is worse in the south. this is because we see more respiratory in the south. in the south it's one for one. every person in south is getting antibiotic prescription every year. >> eric: is that too much? >> too much! most of the time it's not indicateed. >> eric: david -- call you doctor. you go to the doctor and you trust them and they say take an antibiotic and you want to feel better. how do you know if you don't
7:32 am
need it? >> that is the problem. what you just said you want the antibiotics and the doctor is obligated to give it to you. one statistic that marc mentioned 259 million prescription for 309 million population. the problem is the doctors and the patients are involved in this. look, imagine going to see your doctor and you wait in the waiting room. finally you see him. you walk out of the office and say you know what? maybe we should wait and see and do nothing. get rest and drink fluid and call me tomorrow. >> eric: i paid $200 for that? >> right. there is a knee-jerk reaction that the doctor is pulling out the prescriptions too often. let me just say that antibiotic has been a great weapon to bacteria for the last 80 years. when alax zender fleming discovered this in 1927, its has saved millions of lives. but at that time, we didn't know much. over the years we became casual. z-pack of the world and prescriptions.
7:33 am
what happened? we discussed a couple of weeks ago about the reanalysis tant, and we heard about the mrsa. so what do you do? number one, since 1987, we haven't had new bullets or weapons. up with of the things that fleming said is what sometimes finds, what one is not looking for. what we need is new weapons to really fight this bacteria. that is really, really important. also, don't ask for the medication. a lot of times these are viral as you mentioned. they disappear on their own. finally in the farming, the farmers are using too much antibiotics. you to be careful. >> also causing resistance. >> absolutely. >> i want to highlight a point that david made that is crucial. there are times when we need them. there are times when we save lives with them. people come in, they have green mucus or they have fevers. you know, there is ways we can tell in the office whether

alcoholism. everyone calls alcoholism a disease. it's not. it's a behavior problem that is leading to the disease. >> eric: no genetic link? >> we can discuss it. this is a very complex behavior problem. domestic violence, 75% is as a result of alcohol. injuries, accidents, 16,000 people die as a result of this. the way to handle this is change. the word "change" has been a popular word in media. you have want to make small changes, otherwise you won't succeed. talk to somebody. there is help an hope. this april is a month that you want to break the cycle. >> jamie: back to cancer for a second. other than cirrhosis of the liver, which we know is alcohol-related, what is the connection between alcohol and cancer? >> actually, this is the first study of its kind. the american journal of public health is the first time in 30 years someone is looking at the link. they found over 3% of all deaths from cancer are linked to alcohol. 15% of breast cancer. david mentioned the ones for
