get into your gun. >> sean: exactly. the news continues. back here tomorrow night. thanks for being here. >> greta: this is a fox news alert. have you seen these men? the fbi releasing video of two suspects in the boston marathon bombing. >> good afternoon. i'm the special agent in charge of the fbi's boston division. since monday's bombings, the fbi and our law enforcement partners have been working around the clock, and are fully committing to investigating this matter to bring those responsible to justice. our collective law enforcement team has pursued thousands of leads and tips. as i said two days ago, we are working methodically and with a sense of urgency to identify those responsible for the bombings. within the last day or so, through that careful process, we initially developed a single person of interest.
10:01 pm
not knowing that the individual was acting alone or in concert with others, we obviously worked with extreme purpose to make that determination. the entire force of the federal government, the fbi in boston, around the world, as well as our partners in the boston police, atf, massachusetts state police and more than 30 agencies of the boston joint terrorism task force have set about to ensure that all responsible for the bombings will be brought to justice. more importantly, it was done to ensure the future safety of the city of boston, the commonwealth of massachusetts, and the country. indeed through that process the fbi developed a second suspect. today we are enlisting the public's identify to identify he two suspects. we are releasing photos of the suspects. they are identified as suspect one and suspect two. they appear to be associated. suspect one is wearing a dark
10:02 pm
hat. suspect two is wearing a white hat. suspect two set down a backpack at the site of the second explosion just in front of the forum restaurant. we strongly encourage those who were at the forum restaurant, who not contacted us yet, to do so. as you can see from one of the -- from one of the images, suspects one and two appear to be walking together through the marathon crowd on boylston street in the direction of the finish line. that image was captured as they walked on boylston in the vicinity of the intersection with glouster street. as you can see, the quality of the photos is quite good, but we will continue to work on adeveloping additional images to improve their identification value. further on fbi.gov we have photos of the suspects. the photos and videos are posted for the public and media to use, review and publicize. for clarity, these images should be the only ones -- i everyone
10:03 pm
size the only ones -- that the public should view to assist us. other photos should not be deemed credible and they are unnecessarily divert the public's attention in the wrong direction and create undo work for vital law enforcement resources. for more than 100 years, the fbi has relied upon the public to be its eyes and ears. with the media's help, in an instant these images will be delivered into the hands of millions around the world. we know the public will play a critical role in identifying and locating these individuals. somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers, or family members of the suspects. though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us. no bit of information, no matter how small or seemingly insequential is too small. each piece moves is forward
10:04 pm
toward justice. it is extremely important to contact us with any information regarding the identities of suspect one, suspect two, and their location. we consider them to be armed and extremely dangerous. no one should approach them. no one should attempt to afternoon henned them except law enforcement. let me reiterate that caution. do not take any action on your own. if you see these men, contact law enforcement. if you know anything about the bombings or the men pictured here, please call the telephone listed on the photo arrays. that's 1-800-call-fbi. all calls will be kept confidential. we have also established a website for tips that directly relates to the bombing. please contact us at bostonmarathontips.fbi.gov. again, that's
10:05 pm
bostonmarathontips.fbi.gov. the photos can be viewed on fbi.gov. it's important to everyone size the images from monday are indelible and the horror from that day will remain with us forever. this further underscores our need to pursue them judiciously. the victims and survivors deserve nothing more -- income g less. excuse me. the fbi is committed to ensuring the victims receive the rights they're entitled to and the assistance they need to cope with the crime. providing them with assistance will better our cases. our resources include an office of victim assistance at fbi headquarters and victim specialists nationwide. these highly trained professionals can assist victims and coordinate with other agencies to provide victims with the support, information, and resources necessary to effectively meet their needs. our victim specialist team
10:06 pm
continues to work around the clock to bring assistance to the victims of this heinous act. identifying and locating those responsible is now our highest priority. no other details of the investigation will be released at this time because this is our focus now. it continues to be an ongoing, active investigation. review these photographs and contact us at 1-800-call-fbi or bostonmarathontips.fbi.gov imme bostonmarathontips.fbi.govimme diately. thank you very much. [inaudible question] >> i wouldn't want to comment on that right now. i want want the u.s. attorney to comment on that aspect. >> we got photographs, folks, of -- >> next question, please. next question, please. >> are both suspects seen planting these devices at the
10:07 pm
finish line of the boston marathon? >> no. the only one observed planting what we believe to be the device is suspect number two with a whitecap. >> at what time did they put the devices out? >> i don't have the precise in front of me. it was shortly before the bomb blast went off. within minutes. >> are these the sole people of interest to the fbi? >> at this time these are the so many people of interest to the fbi. >> do you have any information on what they did after the explosion? any indication they were around watching? do you have any video of them walking away? >> suspect number two, with the whitecap on, proceeded west on boylston street. that's all we know right now. >> sir, can you address the -- newspapers in all over the country, including the "new york post," identifying two men as potential suspects, i'm just wondering what it does to your
10:08 pm
investigation when things like this get out, and these guys run. >> i think i addressed that -- thank you. i think i addressed that question in my statement by saying the only photos officially relied upon in this investigation are those you see before you today. >> do you stand by your earlier statement that there's no additional danger to the public? >> i do standby that statement right now. there's no additional imminent danger we're aware of right now. >> greta: we're live in boston with the latest on the investigation. mike, that video, those pictures, have now bounced around the world. everybody has seen them. in all likelihood, if you were at that marathon, you have now seen it, too. so if you were in that picture, you're innocent, it's time to step forward, right? >> that's it. that's why the fbi has turned to the public. you heard the special agent in charge saying basically for all the leads they chased down, for all the groundwork they've done, they had exhausted their best
10:09 pm
leads. they turned to the public for new leads and got them just as quickly as this information went out, just as quickly as the new images went out. more images came back in. our affiliate, fox 25, coming up with new images of the individual now identified as suspect number two, in the white ball cap, standing by the finish line. what appears to be a backpack by his feet. that would be consistent with what the fbi said in this press conference, what they told us earlier. this is the individual they say carried the backpack, containing the bomb, up there toward the finish line here on boylston street, took it off, set it down in the crowd where that blast occurred. that was right in front of the forum restaurant. they're appealing to the public. anyone by the finish line just before 2:50 p.m., when they believe the backpack was set down, shortly thereafter detonated. anyone out there taking pictures, taking video. take another look. see if you see this guy with a white ball cap, some say it's a
10:10 pm
polo ball cap turned backwards. his associate, the man the fbi says was associated with him, working in concert, according to the fbi, the two bombs going off 13 seconds apart from each other, they're still looking for all the leads they can get, greta. >> greta: whoever put that bag down that went off, that second one, had to see the mother, the 10-year-old boy who was killed, his sister. i mean, the level of cruelty is just absolutely astounding. you had time to think about this. you actually walked over, the crowd was just standing there, waiting to watch. you set it down and looked around. i mean, it's unbelievable. i'm curious, mike, have the -- i assume the tips are pouring in? >> the tips are pouring in. well, you have to assume that. you're asking me to speculate a little bit. we just know a couple of them we've seen through our affiliate. there's a lot of discussion that names are coming in through
10:11 pm
other sources. you know, we've just got to give it time for the fbi, the joint terrorism task force, they'll get this flood of information. they've got to sift through it now and determine which ones are good. >> greta: the disheartening information that we have, if you want to drive from boston to los angeles, you can do that in about 43 hours, about 79 hours has passed. it's four hours to j.f.k. five hours to montreal, to that airport. whoever these two are, they've got to have seen themselves on the videotape now. if they have nothing to do with it, they should step forward. i'm curious, does the fbi have any leads, or was this sort of a hail mary passed to the people to help track them down? >> well, when they make a move like this, this is the kind of thing that investigators don't like to do. they would prefer to go in quietly, pick these guys out of their beds at night, when they don't see it coming. when you go big and loud like this, first of all, they get overwhelmed with the new information that will come in to
10:12 pm
them. also your suspects are going to do something they weren't doing before. if they were trying to hide in plain sight, blend into the crowd, they're not going to be able to do that anymore, because these images are pretty clear. someone can identify them rather quickly. a very likely development will be someone knows them and will identify them. what could work in favor of the investigators, they will try to do something different. if they were try to lay low, they pick up and move, this could generate new leads, new people could see them and call in. >> greta: mike, thank you. we should also note they may have split up, so people could see them not together, be looking for a single person, not necessarily together. thank you, mike. >> you got it. >> greta: what is the fbi likely tonight besides waiting for the phone or internet tip to come in? a retired fbi agent joins us.
10:13 pm
tell me, jeff, when you look at this video, the pictures, they're pretty clear, aren't they? >> yeah, they're very clear for this type of case. very surprisingly, they got pictures. they worked hard to get those. they pheced the two people, two suspects, together over the course of the last 24 hours. that's a really good development. really positive they're so clear as well. >> greta: that's the good development. the bad development is the time. we've had about 79 hours and change now since the bombs went off, an awful longtime to get away. even if you got in a car, you could drive to l.a. in 43 hours. that's the bad news. people shouldn't just look in the massachusetts area. they should be looking around the world for him, right? >> yeah, that's right. the fbi and police are not sitting around waiting for calls to come in. they're taking calls. the minute that press conference took place today, those pictures were made public officially from the fbi, they were getting dozens of calls. they probably have hundreds on -- that haven't even been vetted out yet. i think with these types of pictures, there were some controlled release of the information, because i think
10:14 pm
there might be something the fbi has, some information, mae another picture, they don't want to release to the public right now, and that's done on purpose, because they want to use that as a screening tool. you'll get calls all over the place. people saying "the guy in the white hat looks like a guy i went to school with." what school? graduated from 2008. i don't know his name. is that something to look at in more detail? maybe. if they have a screening tool, some other information they can ask, decides whether that lead goes to the top of the pile or bottom of the pile. >> greta: we want to let the american people know watching this, any one of these could show up in a 7-eleven a gas station in your community, you never know, because they are on the run. they now know that everyone is on to them, the fbi is on to them. >> right. >> greta: i would imagine they have much more video of them as sort of cameras catch them as they walk down the street, all the surveillance cameras. i would suspect they deliberately didn't give us all
10:15 pm
the video. >> probably not. these are the clearest shots of their face, but again there could be something they're holding back as a screening tool. these people could be international, be out of here, be in a foreign country, being protected by that country right now. so all the people looking for them, all the people calling in these fingers it's not going to have any lead generation from that, because they're gone. >> greta: all right. and of course flights from boston to heathrow, once you get to heathrow, you can go to virtually any country in the world from that international hub. jeff, thank you. >> you're welcome. >> greta: now to another huge clue in this investigation. the battery used for the bomb. federal agents believe tonight it is a battery found in children's toys. fox news chief intelligence correspondent katherine harridge joins us with that. the fbi want to get these two. >> well, what the fbi said to us, they have a record, so they've never seen this volume
10:16 pm
of tips in the past, a record number of tips associated with this case. >> greta: of course, if you don't know where to call, go to gretawire.com. we've got the fbi number, the website where you can go. it will link right to where you need to go. now to the question of the battery. >> the battery, i was told, has some significant investigative value, because it comes typically from a toy, one of those radio-controlled toys. it was used as the energy source in the bomb. the bomb-maker went an extra step. rather than going to a drugstore hardware store and buying a pack of aas or aaa they bought that toy and took the battery out. the other thing is, this is someone that have had bomb training. when people are under stress, as people are under stress building a bomb, they will go to what's most comfortable with them, how they were trained. so that as an investigator, you say who is it who trains people
10:17 pm
to buy these kinds of troys or items, remove the battery and wires. that gets you to a subset of potential groups who may have been involved with this. >> greta: actually i would think it would be smarter to buy the routine aa batteries, because you can buy those any place. these batteries you have to go to a hobby store, narrowing the universe. now they fan out and go to those stores. in some ways that was a -- >> that was a mistake on their behalf. again, to emphasize, everyone has a different style in bomb-making, how they train people. >> greta: like a signature. >> exactly. so this individual was most likely trained to buy an item, take the battery and the wires, and pickup truck it in the device. that's only something that you would see in a certain kind of group. not necessarily something that you would see sort of out of the box. they always do what they're most comfortable doing under pressure, and they were clearly under pressure here.
10:18 pm
>> greta: is there any indication that they know which group, have they wardrobed down thnarrowed downthe group? >> the testimony on capitol hill from the director of national intelligence is that it still remains wide open. there's no determination on domestic, international, homegrown, or whether these were self-radicalized people who are already here in the united states. but here's what caught my attention. you're talking about two people. so it's not a lone wolf. it's at least a conspiracy of two. those individuals had to have some kind of support network leading up to the attack. now was the support network unwitting? you know, they just were housing these guys, loaning them a car, we don't know, or was it a broader conspiracy of people part of this plot to make it happen. >> greta: the fbi says somebody knows them, somebody has seen
10:19 pm
them. the american people need to keep their eyes open. thank you. >> thank you. >> greta: up next, millions of people, not just here in the usa, but around the world now know what the bombing suspects look like. the fbi says, as i just noted, somebody knows who these men are. a break could come anytime now. it's just a matter of someone calling the fbi tipline. we have much more on the boston bombing investigation. our live coverag coverage covers continues. and a fertilizer plant exploding and almost demolishing an entire town. that live report from texas we went out and asked people a simple question: how old is the oldest person you've known? we gave people a sticker and had them show us. we learned a lot of us have known someone who's lived well into their

10:25 pm
things out here is the scanner traffic. the police officers talking about that, talking about hand grenades and additional bombs. police officers at the scene have been ordered to power down their cell foarngs presumably out of fear they could trigger additional explosives. there is a huge area that has been cordoned off here -- i shouldn't say huge, but 3 blocks. there is a terrific police presence out here. it looks like 15 police agents, according to communications that we have gotten so far who, have be called out to the scene here. so the police are certainly responding with -- with a tremendous force. a couple of carcks are -- are associated with the scanner traffic. the language over the radios. air support has been called in, possibly just for observation, the police helicopters. so it looks like the initial reports we got that this was connected to a simple robbery. it is anything but a simple robbery. have you to take into consideration, the proximity and the timing, how close we are -- we are in watertown,
10:26 pm
massachusetts, now, very close to boston. the proximity and the timings, all coming after the -- after the images of those individuals were released. >> is there anything else that you can tell us about that? because what you are describing seems like a pretty big operation, if it was just a simple robbery? >> reporter: it was a big operation. certainly the individuals, if all the scanner traffic proves to be accurate. certain individuals were strapped and armed. we have heard a discussion over the scanner about long weapons or long rifles appearing out here. you are talking about -- police coming after individuals. there was a shooting earlier in the day, as i should say, earlier in the evening. a campus police officer at m.i.t., that was 10 minutes away from the site of the bombing. that is what dipressed -- digressed into this chase that took us over here to watertown, massachusetts. a great deal of armament now, being associated with this. one individual who is here, just
10:27 pm
a short distance away from me has been taken into custody. i have heard from the other reporters. -- i didn't see it with my own eyes, that he had been moved to a police cruiser. a aren't has been called in, presumably to deal with the amount of explosives that we have heard over the radio traffic in association with this whole -- chase and -- and armed standoff, if you will, i'm probably using that word loosely. >> you mentioned the shooting at m.i.t., earlier. an officer was shot and killed. is that correct? is that what you are hearing? is that connected to this? >> reporter: that is what i am hearing. what we are also hearing there is one person at large. one suspect at large, as this is a really fast and loose situation. what happened at m.i.t., according to the best information we have right now, a lot of that coming from the web site, is that the campus police officer confronted an individual, whatever happened, he was shot and his gun was stolen. again, not coming through
10:28 pm
official sources, coming through the radio traffic. a big police presence out here on the scene. it's pretty clear that at least one person has been taken into custody and i can hear the helicopter overhead now. so the air support they were calling on, presumably just for observation, is arriving here on the scene. what i am looking at what they are doing now is more police presence. i can't see a suspect at the moment. but i am hearing from the other reporters that another suspect has been taken into custody, at this location. again, according to the radio traffic, there is still one person at large and one would have to assume that this would be someone who would be armed and considered extremely dangerous. consistent where what we heard from the fbi. what i can't tell you at this point, what i am unable to actual is that there is a link between this, all the timing and the excitement. a great deal of armament, which seemed to connect t. but we don't have an official link to
10:29 pm
say that they are connected at this point. >> all right. mike tobin. thank you so much for joining us. we will keep following this. i want to ask you a couple more questions. >> reporter: sure. >> you mentioned the m.i.t. shooting -- have we heard anything else about ha? that officer? what the circumstances were? what he was responding to when he was shot? >> reporter: no. we don't know what happened at that stage of the game. we do unfortunately, that officer didn't make it. we know that one of the suspects from the scene here has been transported to beth ais rail hospital. one of the individuals they were after has been transported to beth israel hospital. his condition, we don't know at this stage of the game. >> were there any other shots fired that you have heard in that scanner traffic? >> reporter: we have heard a lot about shots fired in this particular conflict out here. a great deal of exchange of gunfire, weapons produced. just pardon me, a distraction there because some of the agencies that are here.
10:30 pm
shots fired, a very tense scene, very active. >> all right. all right. mike tobin, thank you so much. we are going to keep following this. a big chase is underway right now in boston. police using everything they can to find this person, after one suspect involved in a shooting where an officer has been killed. we will have much more information on this as approximate becomes available. again, if you are joining us, a big chase underway in boston, following a police shooting at the campus of m.i.t. we want to stress at this point, there is no indication that this is related to the boston bombing suspects, whose pictures were released just earlier today. we heard from mike tobin, this is a big operation involving police officers on the ground and in the air, trying to find this suspect. there were two sone in custody, one still out there. we will bring you the very latest as soon as we get more information on this. for now, back to our programming. we're here! we're going to the park! 10:35 pm
and why this is a little bit out of the ordinary. >> reporter: why it's out of the ordinary. if you did have an officer shot, as we got the report earlier today, you would have a big police response. but what separates this, if it was related to a robbery, as we heard earlier in the evening, you wouldn't have people who are armed at the teeth as we have in this situation, at least, according to the scanner traffic. we have reports of hand grenades over the radio. we have reports of additional ieds, improvised explosive devices. a command for all police officers on the scene to power down their cell phones, for fear of triggering explosive devices. one of the reporters was told, turn off your cell phone if you want to stay alive. indicating a threat of trigger ing an explosive. lots of scanner traffic with an exchange of gunfire at this location. it's a very tense, very active situation, being that one person
10:36 pm
is still considered to be at large, at least according to the scanner traffic... we are going fast and loose because the situation is developing right now. >> that sounds absolutely crazy, some of the things you are saying, power down your cell phones. this sounds like something much bigger than a robbery. can you walk us through? we know this started with a policeman at the m.i.t. campus, responding to something there and this escalated into this chase. can you walk us through where we are? >> reporter: that was it. we got reports of a shooting at the m.i.t. campus, 10 minutes by car away from the site of the marathon blast in boston. so... that, of course, got everyone's attention. we didn't want to get carried away. the initial report said it was related to a robbery, nothing else. then it progressed into a chase, which could quite still possibly be related to the robbery. but as we followed it, as things
10:37 pm
digress, you started to hear the discussion of the weapons that were involved. at least according to the police who were talking about it over the radio. about an exchange of gunfire, a very violent and intense exchange of gunfire between the police and the suspect and that led them all into watertown, massachusetts, where we are located now, looking at the scene. there is a terrific police presence out here, multi-agency police presence. air support that has been brought in and there is discussion now of one individual described as caucasian or white who has been taken into custody. police reports have been brought in to deal, presumably with the explosives that are here on the scene and reporting that one individual is still at large. one valid to presume that he would be considered armed and dangerous, consistent with what we heard from the fbi, talking about the two individuals they identified on the pictures, in the video, relate to the bombing that they would consider them to be armed and dangerous. whoever is out here, whoever the
10:38 pm
police are operating against were armed to the teeth, if all of this scanner traffic proves to be accurate in the long run. >> i wanted to ask thu, you are mentioning the explosive devices, the grenades, all of these things you are mentioning, we are looking at a big building right now. a lot of police cars and first responders. what are we looking at-- >> reporter: it's tough for me to say. we are just arriving here on the scene. i don't think i can describe exactly what it is you are looking at. but the scene out here and with one person has been taken into custody and they have about three blocks cordoned off in this neighborhood, in watertown. and presumably, they are backing up presty far because of all of this discussion of explosive devices, heard radio traffic about hand grenades and even dynamite. i am looking at a new information that is coming from my colleague griff jenkins, explaining he has heard another explosion out here that.
10:39 pm

>> reporter: nobody was able to make it out. it was a blurb over the loud speaker from the police. and that's -- that's all kitell you about it. nobody got a good clear idea of what that was. the police are very tense right now. they backed the media up a bit further. they arrested one individual who appeared like he wasn't connected at all, but he was wearing a backpack at the time. they bound his arms up and seemed to let him go shortly after that, realizing he wasn't connected. we have seen residents trying to get up to their houses. one of the things they demanded of this individual is that they turn off their cell fops or surrender their sell phones. a police officer was ordered to turn off his cell phone in no uncertain terms. you deal with the cell phone when is you get in that close is a fear that an improvised explosive device could be deltinated by the chirp or the beacon of the cell phone.

mark, what is your assessment, with everything we are hearing about with the explosives and grenades and rifles and the heavily armed guys. what is your best assessment as to what is going on? >> caller: well, you know, it's extremely hard to assess anything with what we know. but if we take it on face value. we have the boston bombing. and now we have this situation that is really happening in close proximity of the discussion of the description of the boston bombers. and now we have -- we have this situation. i would say that mike tobin is correct. this is fairly unlikely that you have robbery suspects this well armed t. sounds more like a -- a terrorist... very well-armed, you know suspect that has a goal or -- or objective to be this well armed.

long rifle, heavy weapons, you will find, vest, body armor, that type of thing like the shooting in los angeles with the two robbery suspects, where they were completely body armored up and they had automatic weapons and they took out numerous vehicles and personnel... it would be highly unlikely that this would occur on a regular basis. you know, it seems like there might be a connection to the bombings. but it's really too early to make that jump. >> i mean, the way this is being handled, just we heard mike tobin talking about, they have so many officers on the ground and in the air. this sounds like a pretty big operation if you are just talking about a robbery. is it possible that, you know, that they're maybe calling it that to keep it quiet right now? >> no. they wouldn't call it a robbery suspect... you would have to have a coordinatedert to do that.
