1:00 am
4:00 in the morning now. stand by in washington. i want to get more of a comment from you on what we watch from the fbi. you were watch watching that with great interest. i was implored not to go with anything before they have anything. it is 4:00 in boston, massachusetts. we are a few blockspley square. it is 4:00 in boston and 1:00 on the west coast. welcome back to our continuing coverage on the fox newschannel. it is the events in the boston marathon and watertown, massachusetts. let's set the stage for you. we are downtown at boston's back bay. we are a few blocks from the bombing that happened on monday at 2:tift local time. 2:50 local time. watertown is 10 miles west of here near the campus of mit, one of the most press stey
1:01 am
yous engineering schools in the world. there is heavy police activity in this area for four to five hours running after a call came in. there were gunshots and the s.w.a.t team moved in. this is a scene still considered active. boston police talking about watertown massachusetts residents to stay where they are and not go outside. wees work throw the information mike levine is with me. mike, your information has been inavailable. what can you report here tonight? >> the latest i am hearing, and perhaps it is stating the obvious, but federal law enforcement does believe what is going on around mit may be related to the bombings on monday. and i am being told local police in the boston area may have arrested someone with, quote, similar features as one of the suspects from the monday bombing.
1:02 am
>> mike do you know if the features reflect suspect number one or suspect number two? >> i don't know that. continue. i'm sorry i interrupted you. >> i was just told how the situation unfolded tonight was earlier at a 7-eleven there was a carjacking or robbery and local police responded. when one of the officers got on the scene he was shot and i believe he has now died. there was a subsequent chase and while police were chasing the suspects, the suspect was throwing explosive devices at the chasing officers and that's how we got to where we are now. >> this campus police officer, was he connected with the 7-eleven, mike? >> i believe he was actually an mit campus police officer, but i am not sure of that. >> do we know if he is -- has he died from his injuries?
1:03 am
>> i believe ad -- dash i was told the officer shot at the 7-eleven has died, so i believe yes in fact that is the case. jay -- >> at the moment they will hear from wertown police, but this has been a massive show of force, mike. whether it is the s.w.a.t team or massachusetts state police. >> and the fbi says we are on the scene and working this. obviously the bombings on monday that investigation is being lead by the fbi. so the fbi pointed out tonight that as of now there is no suspect in federal custody. so the person who has, quote, similar features is in local custody as of right now. >> 1-800-call fbi. 2255324. that was the number that went out at 5:00 today. the boston marathon tips fbi .gov. it was an appeal to come
1:04 am
forward with information. my uh polly gees. do we still have mike levine with us? >> yes, i am still here. >> we do not. when we get mike back there is a critical question in boston. and that is whether or not the tips phoned in on behalf of the public lead police to the scene here. mike tobin working the story. who do i have? molly, my colleague who is near the scene in watertown, massachusetts. molly, where are you precisely and what are you seeing? >> we are at the corner of auburn and lange done. this is a main drag through waterton. this is a main street. i am told that the suspect that was fleaing and coming out of that area and into the watertown area that the car that suspect may have been driving and they believe it was abandoned down the street here and the suspect took off on foot. now i am standing maybe a
1:05 am
mile, a mile and a half from the river, from the charles river. we are getting reports that people and police are searching along the river. that's where some of the media briefings are expected to take place. it is a matter of a few miles. a very active crime scene. all of watertown has been -- it is a huge, active, incredible crime scene. everywhere you turn you will see police officers and watertown square is just getting to this area from the next town over. we have seen officers from cambridge and lincoln and all of the surrounding police departments have converged to one large lock down. neighbors are being told to stay in their homes for the most part. it is early in the morning and maybe a lot don't know it has occurred yet. it is a quiet neighborhood. we are not seeing a lot of people coming out o peeking out of their windows and doors this morning which is a good thing. they are urging people to stay inside and not answer any
1:06 am
doors unless it is an identified police officer and has a reason to be there and knocking on your door. looking down the street it is fairly quiet. we are not seeing a lot of activity. it has quieted down in this area as some of the vehicles headed off toward the arsonal street area. the area they were actively searching 10, 15 minutes ago. between here and there there is a tremendous amount of searching happening. bill? >> molly, just take a bit more, how long have you been there? on this story tonight? >> maybe about 40 minutes we arrived at this particular location. >> i am told there is a press conference that will happen at a local shopping fall. are you near that area? >> we are fairly close to that area. we have crews -- we have multiple crews that are out. mike tobin is out and i believe they are a little closer to that area, but we do have people headed for that
1:07 am
area that are setting up now. >> want mike tobin up here in a moment. we will get as many people as possible on this story. mike tobin is live here now, and mike where are you and what is your location and what have you seen tonight dism -- tonight? >> we have been all over the place. as we get more information through federal sources that indeed this may be connected to the marathon bombings, stretching the word may. we are thinking the different area of watertown and that is where we saw the most activity. we saw the police officers decked out in the tactile gear. they are paying attention to one particular house. we don't know what is going on in that house. possibly it appeared somebody was holed up in that house.
1:08 am
can't confirm that. what we got from them is multiple explosives on the scene. they were scattered about in that neighborhood. the police were edgy and advising people to turn off their cell phones out of fear the signal from the cell phone could detonate the explosive device or the homemade bomb. we saw a bomb robot on scene. we had a report that -- it was controlled explosions out there. a lot of very -- a lot of nervous police officers on the scene going door-to-door as we have heard now confirmation with the state troopers that they will go door-to-door and advise people to shelter in place. that for the safety of the residents as well as the clarity of the police officers. there is one individual that they are still looking for who is still at large. they want to be able to identify that individual and they certainly don't want
1:09 am
anybody causing a detonation or having an officer mistake them for this individual who is still at large. all of the authorities out here, it is a very fast and very loose and it is a very chaotic situation. you don't really need sourcing on that. we have seen it throughout the evening. >> mike, just clarify one thing. how many officers have you seen and where are they from? s.w.a.t team, have they been in your area or not? >> i have seen every agency. e national guard out here, state police officers, watertown police officers, boston police officers, cambridge police officers out here, big armored vehicles coming to different parts of the scene here. i have seen the bomb disposal units coming to parts of the scene here. i have seen the eod, the ordinance disposal unit on the scene trying to do away with the number of explosives we have confirmed through the
1:10 am
state police that are scattered in the area. at the same time we have confirmation from the scaner traffic earlier in the day. the individuals in the car were hurling the explosives out of the car. so absolutely a chaotic and dramatic scene getting these individuals from the mit campus where it all started out here to where it is very tense and a very fluid situation and people are advised to stay in their homes for their own safety, bill. >> mike, thank you, mike tobin is there live in watertown. mike levine, the department of justice telling law enforce -- saying rather law enforcement believes the incident may be related to the boston bombings and an investigation continues. levine reports fbi is now saying that local police may have arrested a man with similar features, similar features as one of the bombing suspects. that could have been suspect number one with the dark cap or suspect number two with the
1:11 am
white cap. those were images that were first broadcast across the world at 5:00 local time during the fbi briefing. the fbi knew when tho pictures went out they were high quality. they knew they had to draft a lot of interest from em pooh. interest from people. they braced themselves for the possibility. they were ready for it. it is possible those tips and those individuals, especially suspect number two who the profile of suspect number two was so clear. if this was a friend of yours or a family member you could clearly identify them. the massachusetts state pleasant out a statement saying suspect number two prominent jaw, defined those. that profile picture is so telling. this image came out several hours ago. this was not released to the press conference and this is
1:12 am
critical. both men side by side, clearly a front view of both men and their faces on that image. rick jenkins has been there and following this story and literally chasing the story. grif, what do you have now? >> bill, this story started at 10:48 p.m. last night when an alert went out through the educational alert system that says active shooter. we now know that a police man for the police is shot and from that scene where i left greta's show to do a live show last night i went to mit and covered covered -- [no audio]. >> i can't hear grif. tell new york. somebody pressed down a button. lift it up. tell them to lift up the
1:13 am
button in the control room. >> bill can't hear you. >> hi, bill, sorry about that. we are here in watertown. we are also getting information on the scene that this is where -- this is where the officer was injured. they were not sure how he was injured, but as you mentioned or as grif just mentioned he was apparently shot. according to sources on the scene it happened along the course of the pursuit that occurred between cambridge in this area here here in watertown. this is why the scene is locked down. that's because they believe the vehicle was abandoned in the course of the pursuit. the suspect left the vehicle and and -- or crashed the vehicle and then left on foot. that's why the pursuit continues between here and the area down by the river where the command center is being set up. we are still waiting word on how active that pursuit
1:14 am
remains at this point in time. fairly quiet here. not as much activity. it seems a lot of the action has moved a little further closer to the city of boston and closer to cambridge and much closer to the charles river. bill? >> molly, thank you. sorry about the confusion earlier there to our viewers at home. we will go through this ride for several hours. many had gone in for the night and then all of these developments happened and scrambled to get the story covered as best we can. molly is in watertown and grif jenkinss is in watertown and so is mike tobin watching the developments near the campus of mit. ed davis is the boston police commissioner. he was one of the first public officials you saw on monday afternoon after the bombings in boston. he just sent this out on his official twitter feed. one suspect dead. one at large. said to be armed and dangerous. white hat suspect at large. if that is the case, white hat
1:15 am
suspect would be suspect number two from the i'm midges the fbi released -- the images the fbi released. i want to get back in a moment. watch the video here. i am not sure when this came in, but that is clearly an apprehension and an arrest that took place when the police were working this story on that street earlier today. that is watertown massachusetts on the campus of mit. who do we have next, new york? grif jenkins is is back in watertown. there is a local report from whdh which is the nbc station in boston who is interviewing a student near the campus there. he was on the third floor of the apartment building and explaining how much he saw the activity out of his window. many gun gunshots. he described a grenade being thrown and a pressure cooker bomb like we reported literally thrown at police officers. he described the explosion was something you would have heard on monday afternoon.
1:16 am
that was his eyewitness account and we are reaching out to him to get him on the air now. grif, what do you have in watertown? >> that account may be a little confused. i bet it is not quite at mit. it is more here in watertown. as i was saying before and i apologize to our viewers, but we lost the signal. we came from mit to watertown about five miles away. i was giving chase to at least 40 or 50 police cars. i heard multiple gunshots and an explosion in this neighborhood which is a fluid situation. they are going door-to-door and residents are told to stay inside. i heard the explosion and the gunfire. i pulled over and got out. the footage, the apprehension which i cannot see it is my footage. i followed the police. this was a multiple law enforcement exercise. they were going door-to-door and guns drawn.
1:17 am
it was me and one other local cameraman. we were the only two on the scene in the middle of what was unfolding. when we got back to the intersection where we pulled over a man came down the hill and was laying down and the police were very startled. i was trying to get as close footage as i could get for us, bill, so we can make an id, but the thing about the high, high risk of the explosives and the explosions we heard earlier in the night -- residents heard -- all of the residents i talked to told me it was like a war zone. i heard at least five throughout the night, two when we were out on our feet. there is that doubt that -- still fluid. it may be quieter. you may not see as much activity behind me they are looking -- that nook and cranny unturned.
1:18 am
they are trying to find this guy. it is fluid and so if you see anything suspicious they are looking yet for one more person and as you report, bill, perhaps the white -- indeed the apprehension of at lease one of the shooters tonight which may or may not be -- [no audio] >> grif i apologize. i am catching every third word there. we hillary establish your sig -- we will reestablish your signal and get a better feed. i just want to read what the police commissioner sent out again a moment ago. one suspect dead and one at large. armed and dangerous. white hat suspect at large. if you go back to the fbi images that would be suspect number two. the former new york police detective with me now. tom, good morning to you. you are back in manhattan. >> good morning. >> these are fast-moving developments.
1:19 am
we are trying to figure out what is true, what is not and what is working and not working on this investigation. what is your sense about how it is moving at the moment? >> listen, after the fbi briefing last night at 5:00 p.m. we knew that there would be a lot of calls and a lot of heightened state of awareness on law enforcement. we don't know yet if the mit shooting had anything to do with the boston bombing or the suspects. we know mit is within five miles of watertown. anything that happened at mit very possibly could have spread to watertown and you could be dealing with the same insurance department there or the same suspect there. the suspect is a generic term and it has to be used carefully in different instances that will happen around boston. when you are dealing with the heightened sense of awareness and the law enforcement efforts you are dealing with different departments and frequencies and put
1:20 am
information together even on a law enforcement standpoint is difficult at this point in time. >> i uh preash yait your expert -- i appreciate your expertise. the boston police department on the twitter feed a moment ago per the commissioner davis , one suspect decease etd -- ased and the second suspect -- that's the same as thpolice commissioner put just come back to me. they sent awi ttter pic on that feed on the boston police department. this is the image the police department is putting out. go ahead and put it on camera. new york, do you see my iphone hoar? this is the i will meg of- this is the image of suspect number two not weang a white hat, but in a gray hooded sweatshirt. i am not sure where this is from, but it could be a gas station. it could be a supmarket in the area. but that is the image they are putting out now. we areatching that as we await the presser now. thiss watertown police that are about to brief.
1:21 am
go ahead, gregory and come back out. that was just sent out by the boston police department. we do have the press conference and this will be itical to tell us how this started and most important of all why it started and what police believe they now. if we have it, let's drop in. >> we will go through the speaker. >> what is your name? >> i am calling on the watertown community to be calm during this time. we are talking about east watertown, exter, laurel street, school street area, remain your homes. as the colonel sai we will be going and doing a src please stay in your homes and do not come out. if you get a knock on your door make sure we will have uniformed officers there to assist with the screening and the safety of these neighborhoods. again the watertown community has always been good, and we areskg for your cooperation again to assist us during this difficult me. there is no planned controlled blast of any sort. there are explosive ordinance
1:22 am
teams that have been up there and are in the process of recovering anything dischged from the vehicles. we are making those safe at this point. someent off and some did not. we are not ppared to talk about identifications. that was one of the reasons that those rid yows were -- videos were released yestday. >> where was he shot in. >> i will not get into suspects about that. >> is he alive? >> we dot have the names. >> this is an on going investigation. we can't get into details on the description of the suspects or the names. we are trying to get information to the people who live here that they should stay in their hand not open their doors unless police ofcers are there. erere is a 20-block perim around the location the chief just talked about. we are concerned about securing that area and making sure this individual is taken into custody. we believe this to be a
1:23 am
terrorist. we believe to be a man who has come here to kill people. weeed to get him in custody. one thing i want to say is there has been two police officers, one killed and one badly injured. our sympathies to chief mcmillin who has a severely injured officer in the hospital and the chief from the mit police and the families of the officers. this is a terrible tragedy. we don't want to increase it. we want to be careful of what we do. >> folks, we have to get back to the incident. we will be back in about an hour to brief you again. thank you. >> well there you have it. watertown police with their first statement. it did not last long. it was available. here is what they said. not prepared to talk about any identification. but there is one person dead and one atarge and that would synchronize with some of the information from the boston police commissioner 10
1:24 am
minutes ago. the suspect at large said to be suspect number two. that man that was shown to the public wearing a white hat. i showed you an image wearing a gray hoody. when they acquired that image it is not clear. the image of both suspects in what appears to be a gas station and wearing a gray hoodie. it seems like adidas on the front, butwoman not certain. that is the same profile of the image we saw from the profile of suspect number two at 5:15 earlier tonight. also and this is important one police officer dead in watertown and one police officer wounded. they said this incident started at a local 7-eleven that's where the campus police officer was working a night shift there and guarding the store or perhaps he responded to an insurance department, but that's where thefficer was shot and later died at a local hospital. this is quick looy moving and
1:25 am
frankly we do not have all of the information we would like to. we are trying to piece it together step by step. from town to town in the community. a few blocks behind me would have been the finish line at copley square. if you go miles west of here you would be if watertown, massausetts. it would be near the campus of mit and that's where mike tobin is back with us with an update from his location. mike, what do you have? >> what we got from the state police is is confirmation. it seems that it will be a nightlong and it is indeed connected to the marathon bombing. what the police identified is that the photograph of the individual they just released, the individual in the grie hoody -- the gray hoodie is suspect number two. the imagery leased yesterday night by the fbi and the joint terrorism task force as the
1:26 am
individual who set the bomb out in front of the forum restaurant near the finishing line just before 2:50 p.m. when the explosion happened. now vut -- now you have the big connection. they described the exchange of gunfire at the mit campus. it took about five miles in which explosives were hurled out of the vehicle. it was a stolenner is say des -- i should say it was a carjacked per say disease -- per -- mercedes they drove to the location. one police officer has been killed and another wounded. there is a terrific police presence out here and one message they wanted to get out clearly is is the people in this area need to stay in their home because you have somebody out in the neighborhood and they have to consider them armed and dangerous. in fact, it is proven that it is heavily armed and dangerous
1:27 am
by all of the air ma meant we have in the neighborhoods behind me. >> mike, stand by. i want to get back to grif jenkins and tom it would appear based on everything the police are talking about there is a clear connection between the bombings on monday afternoon and everything we are watching unfold in watertown, massachusetts. if that is the case and it stays that way you have exactly what the fbi wanted. they waited to put out their best picture and when they did they got the tip they needed. would you agree with that? >> it appears that the off duty mit officer may have spotted them in the gas station convenience store and may have tried to take police action and killed in trying to take police action and everything unfolding may have unfolded from the 7-eleven.
1:28 am
you put out on your phone the picture that was probably taken from the 7-eleven right after the shooting. that's what police are putting out thousand. most likely suspect number two is still wearing or has taken off the hoodie if he knows police have that photo. >> that is an excellent point. don't move. we want to bring this to you. we believe to be a terrorist who wants to kill people. that's from the police a short time ago in watertown. griff jenkinss is back on scene and what do you have now? >> bill it is still fluid here in watertown where the evening for people just waking up. this began at 10:48 where the alert went out active shooter. that has moved here. i followed the police throughout the night. when i tell you they threw everything at what they were chasing i'm telling you i was in the middle of 40 cars in
1:29 am
front of me and 20 behind me. it was going 100 miles an hour. it was three or four blocks behind me on mount auburn about five miles from mit where they got out and started to go door-to-door. we went pout with our cameras to follow the police with precaution. one of the suspects, we don't know which one, one came up behind the police with guns drawn and surrendered, but did not fight. when i first arrived on the scene around 1:00 a.m. when the absolute war zone gunfire was taking place and one explosion i object served, they wore probably were aware that this was something more than the run of the mill armed robbery and that is when i began to see the fbi. i saw commissioner davis himself come to the scene. i saw s.w.a.t teams and explosive device teams, dogs go out.
1:30 am
everything they have. they have a lot in boston. everything they had they brought to watertown. this is a fluid situation and residents are still told to stay indoors, do not answer unless you see police because somebody may be on the loose and certainly armed and dangerous and they are willing to die and do not try to stop them yourself. call the authorities. that's what you are asking us on the street with the officers behind us. we are staying now five blocks back. we are hearing rumors on the police chatter that there may be some explosive units working these neighborhoods. we can't get in there and nor do we want to because we don't want anybody in harm's way. coming and going all nightlong had various degrees and we simply aren't getting information on the street here other than the fact that we know this is fluid, active and
1:31 am
we are using extreme precaution as we try to get as close as we can to report on it for you. >> thank you, grif. coming baying to tom here, but i want to repeat the information in case are you just joining us. local time in boston is 4:30. it is 4:30 a.m. and this has been now a story that really took off about 11 hours ago, 12 hours ago when the images went public on behalf of the fbi in boston. was we move toward the scene in watertown, massachusetts. in boston, suspect on the loose. believe him to be a terrorist who, quote, came here to kill people. the police commissioner saying that person is suspect number two we saw in the profile picture. tom, how do go about finding this man now? how do you run the dragnet in watertown, massachusetts or boston, massachusetts or to close the highways on the outskirts of town to make sure if he has transportation, if he has a car whether he has it
1:32 am
-- has his own or whether he carjacks a vehicle how do you track him down and make sure he is not out of the area here? this area is loaded with fbi, s.w.a.t, national guard, state and local police. >> that is is a very good question. what they are going to do at this poit is they are setting up the command post as you reported on and molly reported. what they are going to do is formulate all of the officers. remember you have to coordinate all of the law enforcement efforts from the fin, the jttf, the alcohol, tobacco and firearms. , state police and local officers from boston and transit and ems. remember you need planses standing by in case somebody else gets hurt and the fire department because these guys are known to have explosives. all of this has to be coordinated at the same time you are marking off the radius
1:33 am
to catch this guy. you also don't want to give him a method of escape. you don't want to allow any other cars in this area where he could hijack a car or another car. then you have the crime scene where they dump the first time the crime scene. it is by the homes and the backyards and the different cars he could be hiding in or secreted himself in watertown. >> tom, thank you. now back to molly who has new information in watertown. >> bill, the latest information we are getting here is there is a possibility that we will hear some explosions intentionally set off. in other words it is by bomb squad on the scene that the suspect fleaing from cambridge to watertown, we mentioned we heard these explosions earlier throughout the day and ns witnesses reported hearing the
1:34 am
explosions. some items may not have exploded and the bomb squad in the area may detonate these items for the safety of the public. that does not mean if the public hears explosions they can assume it is a bomb squad. we know there is a person police identify as a terrorist that is on the loose in the area. we don't know what his situation is or what items he has or if he still has weapons , what sort of weapon he's may have, but there is a possibility of controlled explosions here in the area. the police officers in this area have also been warned that that is a possibility. one other thing to note. we are starting to see the lights in the neighborhood. people are starting to wake up and look out their windows and realize that they are living in a crime scene. that will be another problem for police to handle as they get up and start thinking. i am wondering how much of the
1:35 am
neighborhood will be locked down. they are still asking people to stay in. we are seeing people driving around, neighbor's curiosity and i am wondering how many of these people will stay in their homes and how many will come out to investigate and ask questions and that sort of thing. hopefully people are turning on their televisions and staying inside. bill? >> molly, thank you. this is the headline of the hour. boston police say one suspect is dead. another suspect is on the run. they are not accounted for. the second suspect would be the person described as suspect number two wearing the white hat and the images the fbi put out. that image came out from the fbi about 12 hours and 45 minutes ago. the image on screen left is what came out in the past hour. suspect number two at another location when tom ruskin was on with us a few moments ago he suggests that is the image captured and that was acquired
1:36 am
maybe around 10:00, 11:00. we have thought confirmed that, but it is a different location and different clothes as well. mark furman on the line with us. when the fbi brought out the information during the press conference and now we have moved 12 hours later to the sipe in watertown -- to the scene in watertown,. how have they done, mark? >> it has been a pretty good job on law enforcement. it would appear to me if these are connected this mit shooting is connected to the bombing, the marathon bombing, it would seem these suspects are watching the coverage and got hinked up and decided to make their move because they felt it ?eftable somebody would -- ?eftable somebody
1:37 am
would identify them. it was not like somebody called in and gave their names. the fbi would be the point person on this mit lead or pursuing the thaims. the suspects saw the coverage and the other end of the effort was people identify them or the suspects make their move and they did. >> the boston globe by the way right now on the web page suspect ab pre hennedded. one suspect apprehended and remains on the loose. it was between that headline and what the police commissioner says. suspect number one is dead. you make a great point mark. it is your thinking now that these two men said it is time to flee to another location. that is possibly when they tipped off folks this the 7-11
1:38 am
that they have been spotted. >> absolutely. the dc homicide detective and i were on the hannity show and we were talking about the specific thing. either they are holed up in boston or they are long gone. we felt once this fbi photo came out and got about a 24-hour window and if nothing happens they are in the inned with. they are in the wind. we are hoping for exactly what is happening right now jie. gregory come out to the camera right here. this is the boston globe's web page. they have been updating it and we have been watching this as a source of information to verify what we have and what they haveett set raw. have et-cetera. marathon suspect arrested. one suspect dead white hat suspect still at large. that is according to police.
1:39 am
they followed that up with a headline down here on the left hand side. that's what the boston globe is reporting. massachusetts state police have been a great source of information for us. mark, i know since you retired from the lapd this is a different game. when the police commissioner of a major american city can send out his own tweet on his own twitter account to tell us the headline of the area, one dead, one on the loose and the one on the loose is suspect number two. the game is different now mark. >> the game is different, but the game is different for the suspects also. they have the same capabilities. it works both ways. it works to the advantage in this regard. look at the fbi putting out these pictures they have them on their phones and with them all the time. it is like carrying a wanted poster wherever they go, wherever they look.
1:40 am
the suspect seeing this, it would be difficult to move during the daytime hours or even move at all. that's exactly what appears happened. they tried to make a move. they were seen and then had a confrontation with the mit officer, and that lead to a shooting which lead to where we are right now. >> you know, mark, if the fbi didn't put out the image screen right, are we where we are at the moment? can we say that? >> i don't think we can. i think those images probably motivated the suspects to make a move in the hours of darkness at the earliest point these images are just coming out before -- you know it really sets with the public and where it sets with the media during the daytime hours of today. they said we have to make our move now. they loaded up their weapons
1:41 am
and explosives and tried to make a run for it. >> mark, thank you. stand by. the headline, boston suspect number one is dead at a local hospital. that's according to the d.a. here in massachusetts after a shootout with police and explosives thrown in the chase. the explosives were described as perhaps grenades at one point. there is an exus chai change of gunfire and it hillary verb brat in the night and it bounces off the houses on both sides of the street and it is something else when you stop and listen to that. the suspect on the loose is suspect number two. he is believed to be a, quote, terrorist who came here to, quote, kill people. suspect number one is in the dark hat and that is the person we believe is dead according to the boston police commissioner. just hang on that a moment,

new york. that is a clear image of these two men that the fbi said were suspects on thursday night. you cannot get more clear with a photograph when it comes to identifying suspect number two on the left. it is almost as if with the hat backwards he was trying to blend into the crowd at the marathon that day and not raise any suspicions. also perhaps he wanted to be identified. there were so many cameras around that if he was looking for identification to protect limes you would look a lot -- protect yourself you would more like suspect number one. suspect number two, well, if you know that person, a student at your college or neighbor off yours or member of your family the fbi said it may be difficult to come

forward, but you must. and based on the tips we are getting that someone in the public has done just that. maybe several. back to my tobin in watertown, massachusetts. as i go back to you i want our viewers to know the geography and logistics of what we are dealing with. this is a story that broke at 11:00 last night. that was six hours ago. what has happened since? i am in boston's back bay near the finish line for the marathon. you are in watertown, mississippi which is 10 miles west of our location here. it is near the campus of mit. that is where the source of activity is for the moment. mike how far are you from the campus? >> about five miles from the campus. and that was about the distance of the chase. police now say that during the course of the chase there was gunfire and remarkable development in which explosives were being hurled
1:44 am
out of the car. these individuals spent a longtime planning this thing. but here in watertown is where the state police say ultimately one of the these sucket expects expects -- one of these suspects was gunned down. we saw the ambulances come racing by us and out of the scene as we were heading toward the scene. now according to reports that's where suspect number one ultimately died of the injuries he got at the end of the chase here in watertown. now the individual suspect number two. when the fbi released the images and now it is the most recent image with the hoodie on. the situation is very fluid and volatile and dangerous. there are a number of explosives out on the street.
1:45 am
the number we can't determine, but the disposal teams, the eod is out there and their equipment is out there. 9 bomb disposal robots are out there. the less are telling people to shelter in place. the biggest message police wanted to get out is for the people in the area who are watching this on tv don't get out of your houses because they have identified a terrorist who came here for the purpose of taking livers. >> thank you. greg just come out for a quick second. this boston police car here behind me, this boston police officer just came up here a moment ago. he got out of his car and said have you seen someone in a black t-shirt? those were his words that he used a moment ago as his truck rolls by here. he was with one other officer and they stopped at the corner
1:46 am
and they said they believe they have gotten reports that a man in a black t-shirt said to be a person they want to talk to was moving on foot and probably most likely came back to this area. now how is that possible? we are 10 miles away from where mike tobin is. certainly it is possible if you have a vehicle, but if you are on foot that is a long way to go. i just wanted you to know what the police are telling us and asking us at our location here. by the way the finish line for the marathon and copley square is about two healthy city blocks behind there. and that's where you would be at the scene of the bombing if you went down there. and this police officer has decided to stay here at the moment as well. mark ferman, you have a very active scene throughout the night. happening on one sectd. i am hearing molly has new information. she is in watertown too. molly, go ahead. what do you have? >> we essentially have a press released, a full press released from the middle sect
1:47 am
attorney's office. this gives information on the mit police officer. he was a campus police officer found shot in his vehicle in the area of vasser and main streets. the officer was found with multiple gunshot wounds when he was transported poo mass yen hospital. transported to mass general hospital. it still continues in the early morning hours and they derrelled that two males were involved in this shooting. this is what the press released says. we know one of the males is deceased and they continue to look for the suspect suspect -- for the second suspect. police reported reports of an armed carjacking and the victim was carjacked at gun poit with two males and kept in the car for approximately a half an hour and then the victim released at a gas station on memorial drive and cambridge. she was thought injured. the person was not injured.
1:48 am
police began a search of the vehicle and we are told the explosive devices were being thrown from the car by the suspects and the suspects exchanged gunfire near dexter and laurel streets. that is about 275 yards or so down the street from where i am standing right now. an mbta officer was transported to the officer. we also had that information. during the pursuit somebody was trans -- transported to the hospital. a manhunt is underway right now. we also know as we have mentioned that the bomb squad is assessing and removing any potential explosive devices that may have been thrown into the street by the watertown suspects. we are waiting on further word, but that is the latest from the district attorney's office.
1:49 am
bill, that's what we have. >> thank you, molly. appreciate that. mark ferman is still with us. mark, if you listen to the exchange of gunfire and if it is true that these individuals were throwing draw neigheds out of a car, and if -- grenades out of a car and they had another cooker pressure bomb they catapulted toward police that tells you one thing. they were ready for another battle. they had prepared for that. would you agree? >> i would agree, but i don't know if they were ready for another battle. i think they were ready to stage another bombing. certainly a pressure cooker bomb is nothing you use in a firefight or in a chase. they were preparing to use it again and maybe perhaps that is why they hadn't left the boston area. it is interesting in the press
1:50 am
released, it seems that the incident at mit was possibly interrupted by the mit police officer. it went from there to the gas station carjacking and the carjack vehicle owner and that was their undoing. somehow they crossed paths with police and possibly because they left that carjacking victim alive. >> mark, thank you. stand by too. i just want to clarify one thing. a lot of our viewers are writing in on twitter and wondering about the image and the footage we are showing about a man being arrested in handcuffs on a sidewalk. we do not believe that is suspect one or two. we believe that is somebody else who the police thought at that moment they had to apprehend. we don't have an identity of that person. we don't believe suspect one
1:51 am
or two. the police commissioner and d.a. says suspect number one wearing the dark hat is dead and suspect number two is wearing the white hat is now on the run. if it is true that suspect number two is on the run and has come to this location or somewhere else in copley square he would have had to go a long way. boston police came to our curb and said if have you seen anyone on a black t-shirt we believe that suspect has made its way to this area. that would be a terrorist who returns to the scene of the crime. mark, what more would you comment on that? >> that is a great distance to travel with the police going between those two locations. that would be incredible to get that far. >> i agree with you. especially if you don't have a vehicle. we are not sure if they do or the that. there was a report of a
1:52 am
carjacking and we are trying to nail that down. pause for a moment and listen to this gunfire. those gunshots ring out in the middle of the night and they go on and on and on. some of our best pieces of information and some of the best pieces of factual information is being reported and on behalf of police that we heard from the watertown police department and the boston pd a short moment ago. i want to play you again that press conference now. have a listen. >> calling on the watertown community to be calm during this time. we are talking about the east watertown, dexter, laurel street, school street area to remain in your homes. as the colonel said we will be going and doing a search. please stay in your homes. do not come out. if you get a knock on your
1:53 am
door make sure we will have uniformed officers there to assist with the screening and the safety of these neighborhoods. the watertown community has been good and we are asking for your cooperation to assist us. >> there is no planned controlled blast of any sort at this time. there are eod or explosive ordinance teams that have been up there in the process of recovering that was discharged from the vehicles. we are making those safe at this point. >> we are not prepared to talk about identifications. that was one of the reasons that those videos were released earlier yesterday. >> where was he shot? >> i with i will not get into specifics about that. jay is he alive? >> we don't have the names at this pot. >> this is an on going investigation. we can't get into details on the descriptions of the
1:54 am
suspects or the names. we are trying to get information out to the people who live here that they should stay in their homes and not open their doors unless police officers are there. there is a 20-block perimeter that the chief talked about. we are concerned about securing that area and making sure this individual is taken into custody. we believe this to be a terrorist. we believe this to be a man who has come here to kill people. we need to get him into custody. one thing i want to say is there has been two police officers, one killed and one badly injured tonight. our sympathies go out to chief mcmillan who has a severely injured officer in the hospital and to chief defavre of the mit police and the families of those officers. it is a terrible tragedy. we don't want to increase it. we want to be careful of what we do. >> we have got to get back to the incident. we will be back in an hour to brief you again. thank you. >> it is 4:55 in the morning
1:55 am
local time here in boston. if you are just waking up and just joining us, there are many developments throughout the past several hours. authorities now tell us that one of the two suspects in the boston marathon bombing is dead, and a massive manhunt is underway for suspect number two. residents in the boston suburb of watertown which is where those officers are right there have been advised to keep their doors locked and not allow anyone inside. one suspect dead and one on the run. mike tobin is near the scene and mike clarify one thing if you can. we have an image of a person being handcuffed and lead away by police. confirm that that has nothing to do with suspect one or two. can you confirm that? >> it may be strong to say it has nothing to do with the suspects, but what i did see in the neighborhoods there was somebody who was walking out on the streets and getting close to the police. the police were skidish and
1:56 am
serious about getting them off the street. it could have been a third party uninvolved and at the wrong place and wrong time. police took him away. we will see how that hashes out. no indication in the press conference that there would be a third individual taken into custody. the one individual we know about as described by the police here and by what we saw was someone who was shot out here in watertown. with our own eyes we saw the ambulances racing off to the hospital and now the information we have is that individual died at et israel hospital. the second individual is suspect number two. the person we have seen originally identified in the white baseball cap turned backwards. subsequently identified by police as wearing the gray hoodie. you have seen the images coming up. you have -- you would not have
1:57 am
a third individual taken into custody. my suspicion is this is somebody who got into the wrong position and the police out there just bound him up and took him away. >> in the meantime we can see the images clearly police put out a few hours ago. this is suspect number one screen and suspect number two screen. that is a clear frontal image of the men. the middlesex district attorney who has jurisdiction says the two men are suspected of killing an mit police officer at the college late on thursday and then stealing a car at gunpoint and releasing the driver of that car unharmed. police released photos of the suspects. police say the suspect on the loose is a, quote, terrorist who came here to kill here. to kill people. are they blocking off that street? >> they have been blocking off parts of the street.
1:58 am
what you can see behind me is just a utility truck to set up some barricades. i have seen a lot of activity with the police officers. a few moments ago i saw state trooper vehicles come blazing through this area with a good clip of speed heading to the center of watertown where the center of the activity is. very much a live situation out here, an active scene and dangerous scene. even after the suspect -- if and after the suspect is apprehended because you have all of the explosives that are scattered about. it is impossible to say how many at this stage of the game, but there are explosives scatter ited in the neighborhood. we have seen the bomb disposal units trying to get rid of them, but it takes a longtime to get rid of the explosives. in addition to having an armed and dangerous suspect at large, you've got explosives all over the neighborhood,
1:59 am
bill. >> this from the state police spokesman now for massachusetts. in reading the incident watertown did involve what we believe to be explosive devices. potentially used against police officers. they quote a cab drive. i heard a loud boom and then pop, pop, pop. that pop, pop, pop is what we were listening to. it is gunfire. don't go that way is what was spoken on that street. mit said about 10:30 p.m. the shooting started and police were sweeping the campus and urging people to stay indoors. it is still going on for residents of watertown, massachusetts. if you are inside and you are safe stay there. this is as mike mentioned an active crime scene. hours later mit with 11,000 students on campus said the campus was clear, but that the shooter was still on the loose. the police cmi
