hiding in a boat outside of a town home. a call came in to the watertown police. three boston police officers with state troopers and fbi agents responded to franklin street. a man had gone out of his house after being inside of the house all day, abiding by our request to stay inside. he walked outside and saw blood on a boat in the backyard. he then opened the tarp on the top of the boat and looked in and saw a man covered with blood. he retreated and called us. we set up a perimeter around that boat and over the next hour or so, we exchange gunfire with the expect and the hostage rescue team removed the suspect of whom was still alive in the boat. we want to take suspects

alive. >> i understand that. >> can you talk about -- . >> we want to take someone alive so we can find out what happened and hold them to justice. >> that is the hostage rescue team did work in trying to negotiate work out of the boat. from what i understand he was not communicating. there has been -- i don't that information. >> i think based upon our investigation at this point in time the citizens of the city of boston in this area can be confident that the threat has been removed.

>> suspect is in serious condition the suspects came to our attention after a vicious assassination of a police officer at m.i.t.and a subsequent robbery that occurred. we've got videotape from a gas station. the robbery was a car jacking. the car taken from the scene and officers engaged that car along with other officers. we were tibl put the case together. the man found him said he was covered with blood. we assume injuries occurred the evening before. there was an exchange of gunfire at the bo. i don't know if he was struck.

there was a house that the team went into for the fbi because we felt it was important to the investigation. but the suspect was not found there. >> my assessment of the incident is that he was assassinated in his cruiser. he was responding to a call for a disturbance. >> given he was out there, still armed, was it safe to let people go outside? >> we did not give an all clear. we made it clear people spoke eloquently to this. this was a very serious and dangerous situation. we had no information that the suspect was holed up in this area. he managed to al you'd us just being outside of the primt ter but in truth we told everybody

that this was a dangerous situation and they should be cautious. it's a dangerous time in the world. we have to use caution. thankfully this man called us right away did the right thing. got on 911 and able to come in and take care of the situation. >> fox news anchor shep smith is here. they took him into custody. it started out clear that the assassination. >> it was an awful night for all involved i think figures on the left side of the screen just a moment ago tell a story similar to one we saw after the capture of osama bin laden. people were dancing in the streets in lower manhattan and celebrating in washington. it's been a horrible four days here. what happened overnight last night was really unthinkable to local authorities. they have a car chase after a car jacking.

then bombs out of the window. makeshift hand grenades and explosive devices and a 26-year-old police officer shot and killed. and this suspect is now in beth israel hospital in serious condition. backed a vehicle up over his own brother. his brother dead in the road and escaped on foot. they had no idea where he had gone. the police chief said i thought we had man power lock this place down but we didn't. turns out he was under a blue tarp like an injured dog. >> it was almost a ghost town here today no, one wanted to go out. everybody was in fear to. think he was just hiding like, you know like a scared rat in the bottom of the boat. you know just sort of i hate to use the word luck but what luck a man noticed a strap was broken on a boat. he looked inside there was the speekt at every point along the way citizen who's have been a help to authorities in

bringing this to a close they asked people, a million people stay home all day. shop owners close down. restaurants closed and everything shut down in boston. i drove to logan airport at 5:00 and managed to appear into the marathon in 10 minutes. you can't do that in the middle of the night. because of this, largely because of residents tips this is over. >> greta: imagine excitement of running in the marathon. it's a huge day here, not just for the city but a world wide event and all of a sudden just seconds these two destroyed lives killing people, maimed people. lives changed forever but tonight people can rest. >> people in boston have been inspiring. the way they have handled this with such strength and now, it's over, you can see pictures on the lefthand side

of the screen. it's understandable after all of these people have been through they're standing up and waving american flags and celebrating along with the nation. just that this is over. now a bigger picture how to deal with this sort of thing going forward wex know we can't be protected all the time but they're trying. >> no one wants to shut down every sports event no. one wants to do that. we want to live our lives. but take a look at that celebration. >> well, you know, to think that the emotional roller coaster they've through this, isn't something you can see on television. it's changed every person's lives for the last few days when your offices are shut down and you can't drive around town, everything about your psyche changes and all they can do is hope, pray this will come to an end and thankfully, it did. >> and what amazing police work tonight. a man who didn't want to be taken into custody because

he's killed before it's -- you've got to tip your hat to law enforcement tonight. >> shep, tu you beat you'll be up at midnight and i'll be watching. the bloody suspect taken to beth israel hospital of boston. adam housley joins us, what is the latest on this suspect? we can see the picture. he came to the hospital on a stretcher. >> yes. by a stretcher, we're trying to confirm what the two are there have been some suggestions of how many times he was shot and that kind of thing. we're working to get the injuries he's been -- facing. we're told he's in surgery. the information coming up as you know should come out right away but everybody taking their time to ensure they get right information. i'll tell you here there is a significant police presence.

but there are police officers at every entrance, every exit. beth israel a large campus along brookline avenue here. over the childrens hospital a significant police presence wex drove through boston. interesting to see stores were opening up, restaurants opening up. pizza joints opening up, people started to get back to normalcy. it became, you drive through two college campuses. about 800 students were on the streets here in boston and have stopped traffic, cheering with flags and signs and any emergency personnel as we are there are ambulances that went up. you can see a lot of sell braigs tonight and just down the street is this hospital. they're working to ensure the suspect makes soit they can have an investigation and go

forward. as mentioned as watching right now there are a number of officers walking around. you cannot get in without being checked by police officers. this is a police presence like i haven't sneen a hospital before. greta? >> greta: you know adam if you think about it, is that this suspect came to the united states, was given asylum by the american people, he was then given citizenship last sex and -- september and helped by the american people tonight getting surgery. a man who is accused and people assume he's guilty. is that he was killing three people and marathon. maybe hundreds of others and maybe dozens of others and killing a police officer and tonight an american doctor skbror a team of nurses everybody else trying to save his life. the contrast between what we have done for him and what he's done done to this city. would you not agree?

>> complete lay agree. the best teams in the world are here doing their best to give this guy recovery enough to get as much information out of him as possible. you can see after the fact this is the guy who caused this tragedy theoretically. to have him survive, have you some of the best in boston ensuring this facility is secure that there is not anybody here with vengeance or maybe someone else part of a group he's with. they're going to ensure nothing happens here. that this is absolutely going to be secured so impress dwroif watch from afar then come back and driving through and seeing celebrations knowing what the community has gone through and knowing there is a lot of healing still to come. just the fact they've captured

this guy, great celebrations but there are still a lot of people dealing with injuries and deaths that are going to have to recover and have to deal with this for the months and days and years still to come. we cannot forget that. boston is strong but there are a lot of people still hurting. they're glad this guy is in custody. so there are people hurting from what this guy and his brother are alleged to have done. >> there is so much cruelty involved in the murder of the 8-year-old his mother injured. his sister lost a limb. going through things that he has done including killing a police officer. and tonight his life being saved by americans, police officers didn't kill him. mesh people gave him asylum and citizenship this, man, certainly like to hear what he has to say for himself but adam, thank you. captured the terror suspect

alive now they can try to get information from him. accused bombers have roots in church kneea. could there be a connection there? good evening, sir, is there a significance to you? >> i think it's important and raises questions we don't begin to have answers to. chechnya has been in a brutal struggle with russia. particularly for 25 years they've committed acts of for rendus terrorism in russia. the school hostage taking over a thousand hostages00 killed. the 2002 seizure of the theater in moscow over 100 hostages killed. they have blown up subway stops in moscow, blown up apartment buildings this conflict has been motivated by two factors one a desire for

churchin independence but two increasing radical saigs of the islamic population of chechnya. this attack on the boston marathon has nothing to do with separation from raush rausha -- russia but could reflect the connection churchins have made with the international terrorist network. whether they take this one survivor put him in our criminal justice system or treat him as an enemy combatant which is the route i would go down. >> greta: what is -- there has been discussion with -- about the fact the foreign government made an inquiry about the older brother my guess is that it was russia. would that be your guess? to find out whether or not he was a radical? >> i think that is a likely guess but churchins have been found in trift operations all over the middle east in iraq, and afghanistan, throughout

dartmouth we have new information from there. eric joins us. >> the process to try to find out how he apparently was radicalized has begun tonight. in new bedford south of here just are into the case authorities confirmed to fox news three college aged students have been taken into custody at the university of massachusetts dartmouth university of massachusetts that is the college in which jahar is a student. it's believed these students may have been roommates at sometime two. men and a woman have been brought into custody we're told for questioning. we're also told by the police they're not under arrest but certainly part of the process to try to find out this young man's journey it's astounding. i talked to his friends who knew him a few years ago.

fellow teenagers students at cambridge latin school. that is down the street from harvard. a public school here where jahar attended. he was on the wrestling team. they said he was popular and hung out that one student friend told me that he had hung out with him and smoked pot and listened to rap music. how do you go from that to a year or two later being accused of what he is accused of having done here? responsible for three murders and trying to wage a two-man war against the united states of america. being someone allegedly involved in an islamic jihad action against infidels that according to them, are us. we've seen it before back in 1990. in new york city, air conditioning repairman in new york city court system

convicted of killing rabbi in an assassination. the people went up to visit him in prison were then later accused and convicted of bombing the world trade center the first terrorist attack in 1993. so the cells have been here there have been connections. and now, temperatures will begin putting peace processes together if indeed jahar ever talks and if he has been steeped in the islamic churchin tradition of terrorism, he believes that that likely won't happen. one other point in terms of the family. i talked to police commissioner ed davis today and i asked him did any member of the family come forward? from those video wez saw of the two brothers walking around the corner with the nap sacks and packs. did any member of the family? sister lives in new jersey. others here in massachusetts area mother in cambridge. did any come forward and

24 hours she was shocked. >> did she say why she had no contact with her brothers? did she say anything about them being radicalized?. >> no. she didn't mention about religion. she has no idea about why they hadn't, she didn't mention why they hadn't spoken. >> she say she's seen the video and pictures before the names had come out? >> she mentioned hearing media reports. she won't elaborate whether she had seen photos or heard about the shooting. >> so there is no explanation why? i take it she didn't call the fbi and tip them off those are my brothers here are their names? >> the fbi when arrived arrived in full force about an hour after that interview. they came with a dozen agents black jackets and it did not look like they were invited. >> so you beat the fbi dan? >> we believe we did.

we're back live in boston. injured bombing suspect is at beth israel hospital. adam housley is there with the latest we've got the picture on the screen. he doesn't look good. >> no we're being told there are multiple injuries suffered. we know he's been shot once we're trying to get more information from the hospital and from our sources as the night moves on getting that corrected is the important thing. we know that they're treating him now and he is in surgery but that he has multiple injuries and we injury is a gunshot wound we've been told a couple things. until getting that confirmed we won't be able to pass those along yet. you can see a plos presence there is one police officer to the right. there are four officers out front and more inside. throughout the campus it's a large campus here in boston. everywhere you go, you can see

police officers at entrance and exits there. so it's significant police presence doctors worked to ensure the suspect stay as live to do what they can to obviously get him to recover as much as they can to get as much information out of him of course where authorities believe they can hopefully get the interview process started with but that is not they have a chance to at some point interview him. and there is a presence inside of the hospital. and driving through boston there are a number of intersections and students out. they skpp cars actually had to turn left to go around and so greta you can move through the city you can see life coming back to normal. then, you can come here they work to keep this man alive.

at least four blocks down there we know that they're looking for a suspect. they know they will use explosives. they know they will fire. we heard mark hahrman whether there is a larger scene or just a robbery these guys are playing for keeps and not afraid to shoot. >> we're trying to get information out to the people who live here that they should stay in their homes and not open their doors unless police officers are interest -- there. we believe this to be a trift a man theer kill people. >> boston police say one suspect is dead. another suspect on the run not accounted for. that second suspect would be the person described as suspect two wearing a white hat and images the fbi put out on screen right. >> at large now is the individual identified as suspect two.

who had the white cap on when the fbi released the video. released images. and now they've just leased a recent image of him with a gray hoody on. >> suspect one, age 26 with roots out of chechnya and russia is dead. suspect two said to be his 19-year-old brother is still at the moment on the loose. there is a manhunt throughout the city and surrounding communities to find that 19-year-old and to take him into custody. >> we're progressing through this neighborhood going door to door street to street. we do not have developments to tell new terms of the search up there. there has been no apprehension at this point. >> we do not have an apprehension of the suspect this afternoon. >> now near downtown boston there are police and s.w.a.t. vehicles streaming into that direction. two men in front that have are flying past. >> shots fired and a suspect

jihadist in those countries has been working against the united states. if he's chechen but he is jihadist once coming to the united states he's going to be encouraged to act against this country. >> jahar in, the hospital tonight apparently i don't think he's ever been out of the country since he's come here in early 2000s. it's questionable how he became radicalized. >> if you hear what his uncle was saying and what many have been saying not just about this case but 48 cases of homeland security threats it's really about who is radicalizing these people. it's not just foreigners, american born we have had many converts and been radicalized or home grown cells there is a machinery radicalizing those individuals that could go through internet or meetings or foreign travel.

spontaneous street demonstration or celebration i should say dried up i think the people are tired and had an opportunity to go home they took it. but tonight it was really interesting to see something that was spontaneous and patriotic it brought a resolution to this tragedy wex saw people crowding around radios to listen to developments after the selter in place ban was lifted. and they're able to walk out on the streets and you saw american people and then, people at -- once they realized it's over it was resolved. a great cheer went out they formed a gaund let. flags came out. they weren't boston or massachusetts centric. american flags came out. they sang patriotic songs.
