1:00 pm
>>. >> neil: well, did this group of two already derailed this gang. glad to have you, i'm neil cavuto. immigration reform plan that looked ready to roll now just looking like it might get rolled. senate judiciary committee will start marking up a bill in less than two weeks. lawmakers are saying because of boston, maybe we need to stop things period. this coming as the house gets ready to roll out a series of immigration plans on its own, first won't touch border security at all. if d.c. can't get it together on keeping us safer, is anyone safe? to ben stein.
1:01 pm
as you tell he is glad to be back. charles payne, dagen mcdowell. we've also got adam and charlie gasparino. charles payne, what do we make of this? >> the day we have to worry about. everybody has to worry about it. wait for the fog to clear because you will love it when you get the plan out there. we don't need to score any political points the. you can't push a plan through without border security being first and foremost and. to push something through so both sides can say to bloc of voters, we like you would be a huge mistake. >> i hundred percent agree with you the political pandering to the hispanic vote. i have never seen anything so explicit in terms of pandering to an ethnic group. >> company's utility party is
1:02 pm
whole another issue. i think when you are pandering or not the fact of the matter you s you are delayin what looked like close at hand reform. i don't know if it is good or bad thing. >> may i respectfully ask, what is connection between border security and tsarnaev brothers. they didn't slip through the border. as far as i know none of the terror suspects have come slipped through the mexican border. >> neil: i didn't think about it the way you phrase it. the issue and gasparino raised with you, now they want to police the folks that are here to ben stein's point. for all good valid reasons but it will make for a thicker bill. >> i have a problem having a welfare state and open borders. that to me is problematic. milton friedman you can't have
1:03 pm
both and pay your bills. it's order dimension. yes, we haven't had a terrorist jump across the riogrande lately or since 9/11. it's the same sorted of checks and balances that go on. those guys got in into the country pretty damn easy. people can come into other parts of the world pretty damn easy. immigration reform will not affect just mexico but every country, anybody from any country that comes here. >> neil: dagen, when i talked to marco rubio about this, i'm a name dropper. [ laughter ] >> neil: thank you very much. anyway, when i did talk to marco rubio one of the things he raised, look, neil, we can address these provisions. first of all they were provisions for tighter border security but we can go ahead and have a stricter process to focus on the individuals who are
1:04 pm
already here. i'm reminded we're not that in the losing losing legislation you put out. it does mn back going to the drawing board? >> it could mean that, but what the senators are a lot more palatable what is going on in the house because they want to address all of these things in one swoop so they don't get fight after fight with interest groups. what is going on in the house, they will try to deal with it piecemeal. first you move on agriculture worker vissasas and then security checks by employers. then they push border security down the road. that is where it will never get done. >> neil: i think this thing is dead. i don't think it should be, but in this environment, no one wants to be in the front of the
1:05 pm
line saying, i got illegal immigration plan. i just don't think it's going to happen anytime soon. >> you know, neil, i found over my many years talking to you, that is my name dropping segment --. >> neil: true. >> it doesn't have to do with ideology. i'm sad to hear you say that. >> neil: so it would delay something. what is the rush, i don't want to look like i'm giving up on all these things that the panelists were talking about. >> i think you are right. the reason i'm sad to hear that, i don't pander -- politics is pandering. that is like a given. we're not rushing here. we've been trying do immigration reform since president george w. bush tried and failed because his party wouldn't support him on this county. >> it goes back to ronald reagan. reagan himself he was hoodwinked. he accepted a deal for which
1:06 pm
border security was going to be a crucial part and never was. >> what we can say on this program because we're not politicians, there is no connec the boston bombing and immigration reform. these were two legal immigrants in the united states. that is horrible police and terrorism issue but nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that we are nation of immigrants. >> neil: but that is what i'm saying. maybe for perfectly valid reasons, a separate bill, separate matter, but they want to make it part of this bill and this matter to police those who are already here. good or bad idea? >> we have to police them somehow. the guys that should have been picked up, tsarnaev should have been picked up under existing law. they were kept off by the russians. c.i.a. tipped off the f.b.i., something went badly wrong. i don't think we need new laws.
1:07 pm
>> if you are right. by the way, let's cut the f.b.i. some slack. it's very easy to second-guess that not everybody followed up on this or that. they have a lot of work to do. >> we always know about the things they miss. in hindsight, 20/20 but what is also coming to light, charles payne, this heightened security push is pushing almost everything on off the table. you can talk about illegal immigration. you can talk about getting the budget under control. this is front and center. obviously, multi-tasking. >> definitely multi-tasking. to your point it's consuming a lot of public relations energy and forward looking energy but we do have to do something with immigration. our population is aging. our birth rates are down.
1:08 pm
we need to find a way to get smart people into this. >> that is good for the economy, but the new fox news poll is jobs and economy. >> you need to get smart people into this country, are you ruling out dumb country. >> two million jobs go begging and unfortunately we're not graduating the people that take it. >> the guest worker program there are visas. >> i believe it when i see it. >> neil: you know -- >> told me just that. he is from a border state. [ laughter ] >>. >> neil: do you think the president's healthcare law is not going to cost you? think again. don't take my word for it. listen to the doctor. it doesn't matter where a good idea comes from,
