melanoma that we have spoken in the past and non-melanoma which i want mark to dig in more. melanoma is about 70,000 people get diagnosed with this, 10,000 people die. even though the numbers are not really high, but it's 75% of the deaths of skin cancer is as a result of melanoma. we talked about the fact that detection is the key because the sooner you detect it. surgery can remove it and cure is great. we have talked about the fact the recognizing that the lesion could be asymmetric, borders are usually irregular. colors are multicolors, you have blue, brown and black and diameter which is over six military meters. if you see those, you need to go to a dermatologist right away. this particular study which came and was published in jama, we're talking about non-melanoma now. these are the ones that we see about two million every year,

they are not as aggressive. unfortunately, we're overtreating some of this. especially in elderly. so the study is coming from ucsf. they found among older men and women. when they removed it they cause a lot of pain and infection. so the word of caution to people out there, if you see these, you can live with them, especially if you have other issues. >> jamie: let's get dr. siegle. we see the sunny view in san diego. >> as you age to get some of these skin cancers, maybe the lesser ones hopefully not melanoma? >> there is a high probability of that. the problem is as david was mentioning, most of these are not melanoma. 2.2 million of non-melanoma skin cancers but only 2,000 people die from it out of 75 melanomas, 9,000 people die from it. in other words, there is 5%

chance that the skin cancer you have will be a melanoma. if you have a melanoma, there is a 75% chance that that it can kill you. what do you do? first of all, don't be afraid of all skin cancers. if i don't have melanoma, i may be okay. here is why that study out of san francisco is important. people are so afraid of skin cancer, they get it as at the get older. may get a basal cell and go rushing for surgery but most of them don't die from the skin cancer. you may not need the surgery. you need a three hour procedure and all the side effects and complications or is there more conservative treatment you can have if you don't have melanoma. there is laser surgery that is very small and less side effects. possibly if you are older than 80, maybe not even have it removed. it depends. basal cells can be disfiguring so i'm not telling people not have to the skin cancer removed but i'm not telling not to be

afraid of it. if it's not a melanoma, the chances are it is not going to spread. melanomas we have to get as quickly as possible and the key to the abcd, is the "e" which is evolution. is it getting bigger. when you see a lesion and they said is it okay? get it rechecked. >> eric: go to the dermatologist >> jamie, here behind us, you can get a punch biopsy and to the remove it. and once the diagnosis of basal cell you can have small radiation to the area. so personalized medicine, treating every patient individually. non-melanoma cases is the secret to success. >> jamie: you don't have to have a family check you over for
