up your spine. this is something that we cannot let stand. >> harris: they won't. a call for accountability. after a many bombshell review shows senior irs officials did know agents targeted conservative groups as early as 2011. all because they had the word c party or patriot in their name. tonight, many people want to know was this political profiling? and, a frozen force of nature homeowners couldn't stop. >> you could see it coming and you keep thinking it's not coming any farther. it's going to stop. but it just kept on coming. >> harris: i'm harris faulkner. we begin tonight with new reaction to the scandal rocking washington and this nation. as lawmakers speak out about the deadly terror attack on our consulate in benghazi, libya. four americans died in that 8 hour long siege last september 11th. and at first the obama administration called that spontaneous drotion that got out of control. that was never true. and with new testimony from

three key whistle blowers this past week, some lawmakers are now calling the white house's actions an all-out coverup. among them, arizona republican senator john mccain. >> i would call it a i would call it a coverup in the extent that there was willful, removal of information which was obvious. it was obvious. i was on another sunday morning show after susan rice my jaw dropped. i said, look, people don't bring rocket propelled grenades and mortars to spontaneous demonstrations. >> harris: changes made to the official talking points certainly the administration's take on what happened. information our ambassador to the united nations susan rice repeated over and over to the american public on multiple talk shows in the days that followed at attack altered a dozen times. several references to al

qaeda, extremism all removed. meanwhile, democratic senator dianne feinstein of california admitting the talking points were, in fact wrong but see says the investigation is being politicized by republicans in congress. >> i understand republicans had a grievance because this happened a month before the election. every effort has been made to turn it into something that's diabolical. i don't see that if i did, i would say it but i don't see it that. >> harris: steve sebaali tan any live with the news for us tonight. republican lawmakers say the administration had a motive for changing those talking points. what do they think? >> harris, they say it was just before the presidential election and the white house didn't want to bring up the specter of terrorism. they suggest that's why the state department and the cia went through a dozen different drafts of what to tell the personal people. settling on the idea that the violence resulted in a spontaneous protest. >> clearly, some of the

early indication is that they didn't want the narrative that it was a terrorist attack on their watch. clearly that's what it appears to be. but, again, that's what a thorough investigation should determine. >> but democrats are disputing that scenario, pointing out white house did mention terrorism from the very beginning. >> the day after the attack, the president called it a terrorist attack. susan rice in those interviews on sunday described violent extremist elements who took over the attack. i really think this has just become a very, very partisan focused scandal focused attack by the republicans investigating this. instead of trying to figure out exactly what happened. >> and democrats say nothing new was revealed during last week's house hearing. harris? >> harris: steve, what about democrat claims that the benghazi probe is an irst to undermine former secretary of state hillary clinton? >> the talk shows were alive with charges and counter charges over that idea today.

democrats trying to discredit saying the republicans are trying to discredit secretary clinton. here's a sample of that debate. >> unfortunately, this has been caught up in the 2016 presidential campaign. this earth to go after hillary -- effort to go after hillary clinton. the reason she wasn't interviewed is because she didn't have any direct line responsibility for the decisions that were made. they want to bring her in because they think it's a good political show. i think that's unfortunate. >> there has been serious questions raised about individuals within her chain of command with respect to the talking points and what happened afterwards. so i think those are fair questions when we have objectionously four americans murdered in addition to the fact that these were, you know, to have an ambassador murdered. this is about getting to the bottom line of the truth. not about what happens in 2016. >> and republicans are determined to continue asking questions. harris? >> steve, the next step in the investigation, what might it look like? >> well, republican congressman mike rogers, the house intelligence

chairman said today he expects more whistle blowers to come forward from the state department. and darryl issa, chairman of the house oversight and government reform committee wants depositions from ambassador thomas pickerring and former chairman of the joint chiefs admiral mike mullen. the two issued a report as you remember finding sissatic failures in the state department. saying decisions about benghazi were made well below the secretary's level. issa says he will make a formal request on monday for sworn testimony from the and the admiral, harris? >> harris: steve, thank you. we just heard senator feinstein of california this is all basically political. >> even though f. those democrats are right, it doesn't training the fact that from the start the obama administration gave out wrong information from the public about what happened. this is why we care. it comes down to trust. was that a mistake or was it intentional? and there are other reasons why americans care about the government vent laying the truth on benghazi. first in the pursuit of

justice, for the four victims, the truth is imperative. did our government try to help them or not? clearly, this was not some he protest gone wrong. so, were there signs, warning signs that we needed to protect those people better that went ignored? on that very night that those calls for help go ignored and if so by whom? justice for the victims. part of why we care about this story. both as the journalists and as a nation. also the entire incident spotlights security that our trusted officials are giving to the super stars of our democracy. diplomats, the people who take our way of life out into the world and walk it out. do they have what they need to stay safe or in this case stay alive? security for our carriers of justice, another part of the story that makes us care. and finally government accountability. again, we want to trust the people we elect so were they wrong? we need to know if they were. did they mess up? was it a coverup? he we will stay on the story for all these reasons. let's turn now to another scandal that's brewing in our nation's capitol that

has the white house again reacting. it involves the internal revenue service and possible political retaliation against hundreds of conservative groups. in just the past few days we learned the irs has admitted low level workers in ohio wrongly targeted certain groups during the 2012 election season. the agency apologized on friday and said high level officials had no knowledge that this apparently was going on until recently. however, a watchdog group says top irs officials did know what was happening as far as back as 2011. now congress is getting involved and as we learn of a slew of questions that lawmakers want answered and soon. peter doocy with the news for us from washington now. peter? >> harris, lawmakers are lived over reports that the federal government apparently used its powers of taxation to unfairly target conservative groups as we now know owe a treasury department inspector general's report revealed that the words tea party and patriot were among triggers that sent several months worth of

applications for tax exempt status to a team specialist. >> the conclusion that the irs came to is that they did have agents who were engaged in intimidation of political groups is as dangerous a problem the government can happen and i don't care if you are a conservative, a liberal, a democrat or a republican, this should send a chill up your spine. >> at the white house, press secretary jay carney now says the president believes that the american people expect and deserve to have the very best public servants with the highest level of integrity working in government agencies on their behalf. carney says the president expects swift punishment for the official ares responsible for this misconduct. this comes amid calls by members of both parties in both houses of congress for an investigation. >> e.y, i'm concerned about that. my standing is the inspector general is doing a report. that report should be out shortly. i think we have to take a good look at it. >> they targeted conservatives for tax exempt status but the

>> harris: in northern california, a suspect is now in custody for the brutal murder of an 8-year-old child. the suspect was the girl's 12-year-old brother. layla fowler was found stabbed to death insides her county home last month while her parents were out. the brother told police he found layla's body. then saw an intruder flee from their home. as as investigators launched widespread manhunt from whomever that was. a tight knit community
