7:00 pm
there in norman, oklahoma. wonderful people there. our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones. that's all the time we have left this evening. stay with the fox news channel. continuing coverage of this developing story. we'll see you back here tomorrow night. this is a fox news alert. children buried under rubble at a levelled elementary school and rescuers are searching for the children. frantic parents are racing to find out if their children survived. the death toll is now at a staggering 51 but the number is expected to climb. dozens of others are injured. that deadly tornado plowing through the oklahoma city area packing winds up to 200 miles an hour and reducing neighborhoods to rubble. alicia acuna is at an elementary school where children are confirmed dead. and janice dean is still tracking the tomorrow. we begin with alicia.
7:01 pm
>> reporter: and part of the reason the number is likely to change is because depends on what rescuers find in the rubble behind me. this is plaza towers elementary school. the belief is that up to two dozen children and teachers are beneath that rubble. at least seven children may have drowned in water beneath the building. they have coroner's offices here and they are continuing to work throughout the night. there are multiple agencies at work here. the search effort is massive. it is difficult to describe. what i'm going to do here is push off here just a touch to see if you can -- it might be a little dark but we'll try. let's try to show her a little bit of this devastation. the neighborhood here is in sticks. it's covered in mud, dirt and wet and people have been trying
7:02 pm
to sift through these things. there are nails and broken glass and people are in shorts an sandals. we have seen people with run or two suitcases or bags or backpacks and that is all they have. they are covered in dirt and mud and just trying to make their way through town and make their way through what was their neighborhood and what was their town. that's where they are right now. they are just settling in to the shock that this storm brought. this 60-square miles of mess they are left with at this point. from what we understand right now the search and rescue, the search and recovery effort will continue in this area. >> is it possible -- are people hopeful that any of the two dozen people missing that they remain still alive? are there pockets of air and
7:03 pm
pockets where they could have sought refuge where the building didn't collapse around them? >> reporter: there is always hope. that's what we have to think especially as parents. i do know that. whilerig right now they are talking in a way that they don't sound hopeful. right now they are not talking in hopeful terms. i don't know if they know something they are not sharing with us at this time. these are the people that have been down in the wreckage. maybe they know something we don't know. chances are, they do. but i think they are trying to be as honest with us as they can and as honest with these parents who had third graders in there who didn't come home today. they are doing everything they can to let them know what to be prepared for. we need to be prepared for things to get worse. >> i'm going to come back at you again. is it possible the children have
7:04 pm
gone home and some of the children and parents have gone home and this number is inflated. two dozen teachers and children it's staggering, that number. >> reporter: i know. it's a hard number to take. and i'm not sure where they got that number if it was because they were able to talk to someone who was inside the school or talked to all the parents. there is not a sense of organization in terms of where they are able to put people because there is no place to put people. cell phones are not work. e-mails are not working. how they are able to communicate is a good question. i'm not quite sure. i'll go with you. i'm on the side of hope. but i have to tell you what they're telling us. and what they're telling us isn't great news. they're telling us that this violent storm that had winds up to 200 miles an hour came through and hit right here.
7:05 pm
and that this is basically the ground zero area. this was a neighborhood and they got some children out and some are in the hospital. 120 people went to the hospital. a lot of them were kids and some of the kids from here went to the hospital but there a lot of kids still in there. is there a chance? yes. and there is a possibility for people to pray and to hope and that some good news could still come out of this. there are some people with a sense of humor and cracking jokes even though they are standing on sticks and junk that was their home and the place they have lived forever. there will always be hope and prayers. hopefully i will have better news for you later. but that's all i have for you right now. >> i hope. so but you know, it's obviously you know, a very grim situation. and very tough for all of us. alicia, thank you.
7:06 pm
and sergeant gary knight joins us from the oklahoma city police department. i'm curious, where were you when the tornado hit? >> i was in my office at police headquarters and still where i am which is 15 miles from with tornado hit. i live in close proximity to where the tornado was. >> did you hear about it in reports or could you hear the noise from where you were? was there any warning that it was happening? >> yeah, living in oklahoma you are accustomed to tornados. there had been warnings all week long at least for the past four or five days there was a high likelihood of a tornadic outbreak today and they were correct. we knew it was coming and we were monitoring the weather unfortunately it hit a populated area. >> i have been watching twitter
7:07 pm
all day since the storm broke. and i noticed many accounts, governor walker of wisconsin was sending condolences. but do you need help from other governors or do you have enough resources? are people going to get in the way if they come? what do you need? >> you bring up a good point. there are a lot of citizens coming to the scene, most of them wanting to help. and in fact that is more than a hindrance because the roads are congested with debris, power lines, things along those lines and you throw in lines of cars, it hinders the effort of rescue workers to get in. we need people to stay out of the area. >> what about professional people? law enforcement from neighboring states or search and rescue from neighboring states not just the civilians. is there something you need there? >> it's not so much the numbers we have. that's not the problem. the problem is getting in the
7:08 pm
areas. the roads are so blocked with debris that it's an effort, a massive effort to get vehicles and equipment through the roadways and get to the areas where people are trapped. that's one of the big things we are facing and the hurdles we have to get over. >> do you have enough backhoes and heavy equipment? i see people are found days afterwards. do you have enough physical equipment? >> certainly the more equipment you have the better it goes but we are pretty well equipped. the problem we face is getting the equipment into those areas. we have equipment there but we have to get it into areas you can use it. there is such devastation it makes it hard to get anything and you run into a situation where you can't land a helicopter because of all the gas leaks. so it's moving the equipment, not so much gathering the
7:09 pm
equipment. >> and i suppose you also -- land lines are down, cell service is poor. if there is any cell service at this point. no one can communicate with anyone on the ground or very few. >> it's really sketchy. my family lives close by there and i haven't been able to communicate regularly with them. they're okay but my point is that's how the phone service is right now. you can't reach them by, íp lan lines or cell service is so spotty it is difficult to reach anyone. >> where were you in 1999 when the last tornado came through that area? >> i was a police officers then also and worked that scene also. >> and have things improved? are you more prepared for -- i don't know that you can be prepared for something like this -- >> they are always prepared in this part of the country. you see people with storm
7:10 pm
shelters they can go to, a lot more so than in other parts of the country. but a tornado like this is so large it's a monster bearing down on a populated area you're not going to have a strike like that no matter how prepared and not have casualties. >> there is so much hardship but at plaza towers two dozen children ç and possibly teachers. and we don't know if anyone may be alive down there. but that is the story that is hard to come to terms with. we feel frustrated because we're not there to help and if we were we would be clogging up the roadways. >> right. and that's any parents' worst nightmare to have something like that happen with their children. and this tornado unfortunately struck while school was in session. it was nearing the end of the day but struck 3:00 local time here and school is still in session. and unfortunately there were
7:11 pm
casualties at that school. and you hope and pray as you sift through the rubble that you're going to find survivors and that's where we stand. they are still searching for survivors at this point. but unfortunately have there have been fatalities also. >> two elementary schools were direct hits by this tornado? >> that's correct. two elementary schools. and again you just hope and pray that you find them alive and you can do something to help them and that death toll doesn't go up. >> sergeant, thank you very much, sir. >> all right. take care. >> this violent tornado flattening all the homes in its path. james moody joins us. nice to talk to you, sir. >> good evening, greta. >> where were you when your home was struck? >> i was actually at work and watching the weather and the company i work for actually dismissed us early and told us
7:12 pm
we could go home so we could be safe. i was watching the weather on the news and saw the tornado and the path it was going and saw it was going directly toward my house. and i just decide at that point i could come up the backside of the tornado and be safe. and it meandered back and forth over the side roads at that point. there was a lot of traffic on the roads and got within a half mile of my house and couldn't get any farther. i parked and took off running. my wife was in a storm shelter. our house when you walk out the front door of the house you look at plaza towers elementary school. and she had my three children in the storm cellar. and of course i couldn't get through to her. i tried repeatedly and i got a text that said everything is gone and continued to try to --
7:13 pm
i'm sorry. continued to try to get through to her and couldn't. and so by the time i parked and ran, of course the closer i got, the devastation was just unimaginable. and whenever i went -- my folks lived in spring-field, missouri. i stopped in joplin after their disaster and was taken back at the -- just completely unimaginable destruction there and that's exactly what i was looking at when i walked up my street. my wife and three babies were standing in the driveway and i knew it was okay at that point. stuff is stuff. but life the precious. and my wife was incredible. she did amazing, like she always
7:14 pm
does. and we began to just help out. she actually shortly after the tornado was over, she pulled a child out from underneath a car. and she wasn't sure if the child's legs were broken or not. they were bleeding real bad. just tried to help out. everybody in the area just jumped in. they came to our house with blankets and towels. our house was destroyed. we gave them everything we had. the children that were out of the school some type of protection on them. we were there and sifting through rubble. we just left. there's a curfew mandated tonight. no one is allowed to be in the neighborhood. they were bringing in -- i saw a crane and bulldozers to start going through what was left of the school. i was standing in my front yard and people walking around and i
7:15 pm
see this gentleman walk up through my backyard and i said, sir, are you a responder? he said no, he said my granddaughter is in that school and i can't get to her. and of course there are just mothers, dads, walking all around the school not knowing what is going on with their children. having a 10, 8, and 6-year-old of my own i cannot grao sq feeling of the mystery of the unknown in that situation would just be -- i can't put it into words. i can't understand that. it's been a day of just -- i -- i don't know if i'm in shock, to be honest with you, greta because this is just so real, you know, going through my house and picking up stuff and fortunately a lot of the precious things in my wife's eye's life, you know, bibles,
7:16 pm
pictures, the -- we framed the bringing home outfits of our children. we found two out of three of those, some of the kids' stuffed animals. it's just amazing to me, quite honestly, greta, that the god of all creation keeps us and protects us. and i know that there is some life that was lost. but by the grace of god i'm alive and i do pray for those families that are out there and feeling heart ache and loss right now because i know it's very real. i mean, i'm watching it and have watched it for the last several hours. so it's just been -- i can't really put it into words. but it's been a night, greta. it really has. >> james, our hearts, all of us even watching this from far away, you know, are broken for all the families who have lost. of course the most painful right
7:17 pm
now is -- are those children in that elementary school and the parents and the grandfather you talked about. i will tell you i have covered so many of these disasters over the years i've been doing this so long when the sunrises tomorrow and we get through the immediate heartache is you will see the americans come out and help you in so many ways and it's like the one thing you will see in the midst of this hardship you will see a lot of the greatness you will see in people. but that's no consolation tonight or tomorrow if you lost a life or even lost your home. but james, thank you for joining us tonight. you know, i don't know what to say except thank you for joining us tonight. >> i do want to end it just saying i do thank the lord for saving my family, my wife and children and i'm thankful to the families that i have and the friends that have reached out to
7:18 pm
me. it's been overwhelming. and i obviously am a believer in jesus christ and i'm thankful to him that i'm alive. i appreciate the time, greta and god bless you. >> james, thank you, sir. and as we know tonight there are children among the 51 dead in oklahoma. the total death toll is expected to rise. amy elliot from the state medical examiner's office joins us. the news keeps getting grimmer but the total is 51 at this time? >> that is correct at this time. we anticipate the number to climb throughout the night. >> do you know how many of those are children? >> i have just been informed that there are over 20 children that are being brought into the office. >> those have been brought in -- those are the ones you have not declared them dead? this could be a 20 on top of the
7:19 pm
existing 51? >> it could be but i'm not going to say the number is over 51 until they are actually here. >> and how -- by the way how far is the medical examiner's office from the destruction? >> about 15 miles north. >> so you were in some way no doubt a witness to this? >> i have lot of heartache today. we have had family members coming to the office and if their loved ones were here and we have family members trying to find if they are here or not. people have come out of the wood work to our office to see if we needed help in any way, shape, or form. >> i worked on these cases for a long time. it's difficult for the medical examiner's office because you have to deal with families who are heart broken tonight. it must be tough on your staff. >> it is. my staff, though, is fantastic and we are deployed at the

organizations and their essentially waiting to be directed to go, go to this -- you know, this neighborhood and try to, you know, deploy what you can and get people out if they are not already. there is an effort trying to get people out of their homes if they have not been yet. >> it's quite remarkable. i have covered these stories -- i have gone with samaritans first from carolina and all these organizations are all so well coordinated and so ready for this. and they have tractor trailers ready to help people. they have clothes and food and ready to move in. but you have to wait as soon as we get beyond the rescue stage. but there are so many groups who are so helpful. >> i covered just last week i was in south of dallas and fort worth and the granbury community

play. >> you say we're getting more storms. a storm is rain or snow. but what is the risk of a tornado? is it just perfect conditions? are these people in real risk of not just a storm but a tornado tomorrow? >> yes. yes. tomorrow we have that threat. as we head into wednesday the threat is going to diminish. but this is slow-moving. upper level low the parent storm is in the plain states. and these are the conditions we look for. textbook conditions when it comes to severe weather including the large, damaging, destructive tornados that we have seen. this only happens in the central plains where we see incredible amounts of damage and tornados. you have the warm, moist flow from the south. you have an upper level jet centered on the area where we see the storms fire giving us the upper level wind support and dry air from the southwest. so all of those conditions together, it's like a mixture. it's a recipe.
