things. >> not all the scars of war are visible. there are over 200,000 victims of pdsd from iraqi and afghanistan campaign. it's a long road to recovery. >> jamie: way tonight ask you, what did you personally learn? >> you know, i was very inspired by these guys. especially the major who you saw at the end who actually won a silver star and he is up for a congressional medal of honor did not mention it to me. he said, i overcome my disability but after a while i don't even feel like i have it. that is what president bush was saying, you take the hand you are dealt with and move on. it was very inspiring, an old guy like he got on a mountain bike and i learned and started to exercise every day. president bush is very inspirational in teorms of getting people to bring the best out themselves physically and

mentally. >> jamie: dr. siegle, nurse your soreness. doctor, you know that hope plays a huge role? >> absolutely. this is becoming a tradition. i also want to really send my regards and appreciation to all the vets and warriors who sacrificed. what he is doing here. i saw a picture of him getting off his bike and getting behind his soldiers and pushing him up the hill. that sends a strong message. its sense of struggle. it's a sense of supporting each other. this is not about biking. this is a symbol how we come together to win. he has talked about in the past there are evil doers out there when we stick together, whether it is the war or fight against cancer or ptsd, we are going to come up on top as a winner. i congratulate him.

i'm glad he is doing this. you can see they work and love each other. it's inspirational story he is sending as a leader i have a lot of respect for them. he talks about love, that is very powerful. >> eric: biking, all sorts of terrain out in the field. we heard the former president talk about the necessity and benefits of exercise. talk about that. >> of course. there is no question. even mark he is worked on this for a year and what a great job he has done. the benefit of exercise the message i think is much stronger. i think it shows you the resilt yent and at the end when they finish the race. that is the winning ticket. at a surgeon i can tell you when i deal with my patients with cancer you have to have that energy level every day. he is a role model for a lot of people out there.

he has made some tough decisions no question for this country. look, they are altogether. there are people that are missing limbs, ptsd, he is bringing them all together. we should all follow this. >> mark, he is 66 years old. he is out there, going along with the guys who are half his age. >> a couple of points about this. first of all, he relates to a personal level to these guys. he hangs out at his ranch chatting with them. very natural. they still view him as commander in chief. at the end of the race. something symbolic happened. we were on the trail, very muddy and those of us who want to, those who want to follow me up to rim which is an area of difficult trail under mud and under water. you may get bloody and could could get hurt. he gave an option on the lower trail. he didn't send people. he led by example.

studies you should know about. this one came out. it finds that c.a.t. scans are more effective than x-rays for lung cancer. who should be screened for lung cancer, just smokers? >> if you are age between 65 and 74 and you smoked one pack for 30 years or ex-smoker and you stopped, you should listen up to this segment you need to be screened. now historically we use chest x-ray or cytology to find out if there is any cancer. now, the study, we mentioned eight few months ago, now they are definitely telling you that low dose c.a.t. scans can detect legions -- lesions. they looked at 26,000 people that got chest x-rays and 26,000 that c.a.t. scans.

27% versus 9% so they came out on top. you talk about death rates. the c.a.t. scans there was reduction of 20% reduction in deaths from lung cancer. we know that lung cancer is is a deadly disease. 150,000 people die from this. doesn't give you a second chance and screening in this particular population are at risk. >> eric: and that lesions could show up and the other issue has to deal with radiation. you have discussed that. talk about the c.a.t. scans and too much radiation? >> this is the national study and first part was published in 2011 as david said. 20% reduction of c.a.t. scans over x-rays. the normal patients are saying hey, i should have a c.a.t. scan but what about the risk and high

cost. now, the second part of this comes out where they say that only one procedure follows that c.a.t. scan. in other words, the c.a.t. scan is more sensitive it might overdo it. people that don't have lung cancer. everyone is worried that you do too many tests but the average is one follow-up test. it's up to the physician. david and ihe show, it's not the test, it's not some protocol, it's what the physician does with the information. i believe the more information you have the better. so if i have a smoker who are o are a former smoker i don't want to do an x-ray. by the time i diagnosis lung cancer, the thing has spread already. i get it in a stage one lung cancer, i have 60% cans of cure. there is a 150,000 people dying every year of lung cancer. we have to diagnosis them early. you do the c.a.t. scan and you

figure out what to do. >> eric: how do you know if it is low dose? >> jamie: i'm more concerned about secondhand smoke? >> all are risk factors. you shouldn't be asking them. your doctor should be advising you and what the risk and benefits. so when you screen, yes, there are lesions that will not affect you but if you are at risk, secondhand smoking, high risk patients in those categories should be screened with low dose c.a.t. scans. i know there is a lot of debate about this and it would increase costs and some hospitals are even lowering the cost of this so people will get it. bottom line if you practice good medicine you want to make sure you detect it. lung cancer, rate of metastasis is deadly. >> jamie: thank you.

>> what is a kidney stone? it's chemicals from the body that build up in too little fluid. if you suddenly start having flank pain or nausea or abdominal discomfort or blood in your urine, you think it's a possibility and you get checked out. what i am most interested in today, there is a new study of 85,000 women that shows that the ones who exercise the most are the one who is have the least risk of kidney stones. we know it's genetic, 25% are genetic. but not always. >> if you increase exercise, lose weight, increase the amount of water you drink, cut down on salt and sugar, you can cut down on the risk of kidney stones. but david is the expert in this. >> eric: do you get a sudden sharp pain like you are getting stabbed there? >> we have a urology topic, finally. the easy way is to look at the kidneys. kidneys are bean-like shape on

the back. so if you have a kidney stone, it could basically be located in this area. calcium oxilate is the most common. a lot of times, this won't hurt you. it can stay in the kidney and doesn't cause a problem. the minute it starts to travel down the tube, the ureter, that's when it can block the tube and it's worse than pregnancy and labor pain. it can start in the back and radiate all the way to the groin and then you have blood in the urine, et cetera. the best way is to drink a lot of fluids, that's one of the things we talk about on the fountain of youth, seven glass of water. pain management. there are medications we use for enlarged prostate, flow max for the stone to pass. ult ultimately, as a surgeon, we can go as a laser or camera and shock therapy. there is always the myth, if you

take too much yogurt or dairy, your ciiveg of calcium stone will go up -- that's a myth. but worry about tea, chocolate, spinach any bypass surgery -- they would increase the oxilate and that would increase the calcium oxilate. >> we heard mark talk about salt. how about spices? if i have been told in my family about spooses. >> not that i know of. but in that food, you are probability having a lot of salt. and that precipitates the calcium and increases the chance of stones. obesity. the number of stones in this country is on the rise because obesity is another reason to have the stones. this advice, drink a lot of fluid. i am happy to post this on our facebook with the diet that you should have or want. crit min "c" can also hurt you. >> which is amazing, that
