tonight. so this is a very dangerous situation for many americans. look at these flames. unbelievable what's going on. this is near utility lines, near powerlines, and everyone is doing everything he or she possibly can to put the flames out. just look at this. just take a look at thenbñ flams there. the countryside is very dry there. that of course just a recipe for more disaster. but let me go back again to the weather, to the storms. take a look at the map threesçs the central united states. oklahoma, arkansas, wisconsin, kansas, illinois, minnesota. this tornado, these tornadoes, if you saw the pictures from two weeks ago, from moore, oklahoma, you know how bad it is. the tornadoes just hit the ground. they can stay on the ground as long as 40 minutes and cause unbelievable heartache, damage, and in many instances we had death as you saw two weeks ago. now let's go to another topic tonight.

let's go to the topic going on in chicago, this has an ugly gang war going on, and a ugly political war,ç saying kirk's plan to arrest gang members is anç elitest white boyç solutin according to a democraticç representative. how you doing? >>ç doing well. >> greta: before we go to senator mark kirk's idea is to solve the gang problem in chicago, your thoughts on what congressman rush said about senator mark kirk's solution? >> well, it was absolutely?>ít( reprehensible. as always, consider if senator kirk had said that about representative rush. consider the source. bobby rush was the exact same person who last year violated

the rules of the houseç floor y doing a very immature and professional act by wearing a hoody to try to protest the trayvon martin shooting while he was in the well during a one to two-minute speech. this is continuing the same type of unprofessional behavior that we see from representative rush. >> greta: the problem that i see in something like this, i mean the gang warfare in chicago is an enormous problem for the state of illinois. >> huge. >> greta: for the nation. our hearts break when we read about kids, innocent people being killed, but the idea that congressman rush says -- the last thing you want to do is be called a racist. how should bobby rush, congressman bobby rush, start handling this to stop the fuel on the flames on the racism and move to the substantive problems of the murders?

>> he realized it was uncalled for, tried to come back and clean it up. the president went to chicago for wednesday for a fundraiser. i don't think he's trying to tackle this problem. you see a desmation of the inner cities across the united states of america, and yet representatives are doing nothing about it. we don't need to see chicago become some rescu reflection of detroit. in atlanta, georgia, it's decimated. decimated. órr8m have their mother and father in the home. that's horrible. black teenage unemployment close to 40%. black unemployment close to 14%. nothing coming out of the black caucuses. as a matter of fact, i tried to have a conversation with the chairman of the current black caucus, and she doesn't want to talk to me about this. what is the focus? mark kirk comes alongç and said we got to do something about

this gang problem, because if you want economic growth you need a secureç environment. >> bret: what he did propose -- that seems another issue, which is seems unworkable. what he says was, is he proposed a mass arrest of 18,000 gangster disciples. when i heard that, i thought what in the world is he thinking? can't have a mass arrest, dragnet, for 18,000 people. >> i think it was misinterpreted. when you read further about what he was talking about, he's really going after the heads, the leadership, which is no different from what we do with drone strikes going after al-qaeda, a radical islamic terrorist gang. these inner city gangs are terrorizing their neighborhoods. you have to go after the leadership of these gangs. not just in chicago, but other inner city areas, but chicago definitely has an epidemic situation when you look at the amount of deaths.

you know, you're more likely to die from gang violence in chicago if you're in the combat zone in afghanistan. that is something that we must turn around. >> greta: congressman bobby rush, his comments, the elitist white boy solution, a terrible insult to mark kirk, but the mass arrest of 18,000, not in response to the leaders. it seemed like senator mark kirk was suggesting a very unwieldy solution at best before he said leaders, i guess, as you suggest, acte and then you've gt congressman bobby rush insulting him. >> first of all, you would think that congressman rush and others, you know, this is the cityjez jesse jackson, louisç farrakhan, unfortunate to say, but everyone a%1% together and tried to solve this

gang problem, try to solve this problem of inner city violence there in chicago instea. it comes back to this simple question -- then what is bobby rush'sç solution to the epidemc that we see across the inner city neighborhoods? this is not just about throwing more money at the situation or the problem, which he says we need more job training programs. we really now have to look at the nexus of, this the breakdown of the family, the education system. i mean, how can we improve education in the inner city? the number one issue with the black community is school choice. no one is talking about that. that's a conservative position. yet you see the liberal black leadership, they don't want to support the black community in trying to provide the right opportunities, education opportunities for those children, so you get them away from the gangs. >> greta: let me switch gears to attorney general eric holder.

>> uh-huh. >> greta: do you think number blowç over, or do you think he will resign, should be fired o, our do you think he's doing a good job? >> i obviously don't think he's doing a good)jv job, going baco february of 2009 when he made a comment to me that i found unconscionable, that the united states was a nation of cowards. you look at look at the new black panther voting intimidating case, and you can go on, when you start to use your power to go after the media. you see not just on the conservative side, but also on the liberal side, many people calling for him to step down. he's now become a drag chute on the president. if the president continues to standby eric holder, defend him, then he's complicit. he cannot once again use the "i didç not know, i have no

knowledge of it," ignorance is not bliss in this case. eric holder does not survive this. i think eric holder needs to step down. this faux charm offensive that he tried to establish, where he would have off-the-record conversations just shows his desperation. >> greta: does heç show that he doesn't get it? when you hear theyç want to met off the record, behind closed doors, this administration claimed tha transparency was gog claimed tha transparency was hat he doesn't get it, or he's trying to be clever or smart or dig himself out of a hole? what is it? >> it comes down to one simple thing. you've had a media that's made excuses for eric holder, really for this entire administration, you know, more times than not. and so there is a level of "we can act withç impunity, we're above the scrutiny of the

congress," what have you. understand, we voted to hold him in contempt for fast and furious. now all of a sudden you're turned your guns on those who have tried to protect you. they're not very appreciative of that. i think there's a little bit arrogance that's there more than anything else. but it is run out for him. >> greta: congressman, thank you, sir. >> thank you so much, greta, for having me.f3 >> greta: karl rove joins me now. karl, let me pick up where i was talking with congressman allen west, whether or not you think that attorney general eric holder will survive. >> i'm not certain that he will. this meeting he has tomorrow is clearly an attempt to -- you know, it's a pr gesture more than a substantive gesture, and i don't think it's goingñr to wñ relationship with the press or give the american people greater confidence in his veracity. if this was the first time we

had questions about his ability to do the job, but it's not, we've had questions about the fast and furious, to his handling of the new black panther party case, to the handling of the st. paul housing disparity case, now this, and a variety of other issues. president obama is ill served by keeping him there. they need to have him go. >> greta: it's so disappointing for him to watch him, because i knew eric holder back 20-some yearsç ago when he was a judgen the superior court of the district of columbia, he was a respectful judge, courteous to both sides, the lawyers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, respectful to clients. he had an incredible reputationç as a judge. now fast-forward to now, and it seems like it's one blunder after another. >> yeah. well, sometimes people are in the wrong place. i think he's in the wrong place. may have been an admirable judge, but an ineffective, disorganized attorney general who's made very bad decisions and demonstrated very bad

judgment. and this meeting tomorrow is -- look, this is a real problem. first of all, you're supposedly trying to meet with news organizations to discuss the justice department guidelines regarding investigating journalists, and you will not allow them to bring their lawyers. only want to meet with the bureau chiefs who affect news, not the management. you know, there was a very interesting piece today by ron fornier who covered the bush white house, a tough but fair reporter now at the "washington journal" that said, look, anybody that shows up to this is going to add to the sense that the media are lapdogs in the tank for the administration. what kind of conflict isç it going to be to have the editor of the bureau chief there with reporters not there who are the people charged with finding out what's in the meeting? you know, the irony of the attorney general saying, you know, i'm going to investigate

myself, and i want you to come and talk to me about the guidelines, but we got to keep it secret. he may have tough language about how no self-respecting journalistç ought to be attendg this meeting. >> greta: what i think is -- you know, we all sort of look at it from a differentç perspective. i think what's particularly deeply disturbing to me, on may 13th, the information came out about the associated press records. two days later he testifies before the committee, and he makes a statement that at best is best misleading, at worst was a lie, because we learn a couple days later about james rosen. that to me,ç for the attorney general of the united states, without further explanation, is deeply disturbing. he needs to make a fast trip back to capitol hill. if there's an explanation, he needs to lay itfor the person people. >> greta, you're right, there's a time for a fast return to the white house, but we're now on the 30th of may. you're right, he went up in

front of the house judiciary committee on the 15th,basically said i've never been involved in anything like this, it would be bad policy. it was that weekend that nbc broke that he had been the person who had authorized the subpoena onç rosen. what he should have done is, gone back up on monday and say, i need to setç the record straight. but instead what we get, we get an entire week in which he's silent. then we get him supposedlyreadi" story this monday, showing, quote, remorse, startingç to fl bad about it, and have yet to hear him clean it up with the conk. not only that, but he's dragging the white house down with him. we had this thing yesterday with jay carney who had to sit there and say that he saw no conflict between what holder said on the 15th and his actions earlier in the rosen affair. the classic was,ç he got pressd in the briefing on it, and he

said you'reñr conflating a subpoena with prosecution. he's trying to something, yes, we can seek a subpoena, declare that somebody is part of a criminal conspiracy, but we really didn't mean it, because the only way we'd really mean it is if we actually accused him of that in a prosecution. in essence, what he's saying is, we were either lying to the judge in order to get a subpoena we shouldn't otherwise have gotten, or we were just -- we were getting ready to, but you shouldn't hold us responsible unless we decided to follow through on it by prosecuting james rosen. the white house is being forced to defend this guy. at some point the president has got to say,ç i love holder, hes my friend, compadre, but he's hurting the administration and it's time for him to go. >> greta: de lie about -- you know, before congress?

you know, that's unforgivable if he lied. >> well, he lied. there's only two explanations. he lied or he has one of the worst memories in history. you know, there are only two explanations. they tried to get this very sophisticated one, no, he was really answering narrowly a question of hank johnson. it doesn't fly. >> greta: it's possible not to remember going after the records qthe media. it's just impossible forç the attorney general, because -- >> it is impossible. i agree with you. >> greta: that's impossible. >> look, i had the same reaction when he talked about fast and furious, said he was unaware of it. ym d the desk of his chief of staff, and he claimed never to know about it. either it was lying then orç incompetent. you're right, in this one, i just can't believe, having signed off on that subpoena, having supposedly lived up to the guidelines of the justice department in doing so, he wouldn't be able to recall it.

karl, your thoughts about these numbers? should we be suspicious or curious? >> we should be very curious and very suspicious. curious because that's an odd nues >> that's an odd number of times. i was in the white house nearly 7 years. mark iberson, once he went to the irs, i never saw him again. he's on record saying he came to the white house one time as irs commissioner. so the idea that the irs commissioner is coming to the white house every 9 days ought to raise warning flags right off the bat. this is an independent agency that needs to have distance from the white house. it shouldn't be part of the white house. it should be distant from the white house. we know what's happened when the white house has gotten to close to the irs and vice versa. we should be very dubious about this because of the way that mr. shulman handled it. when he was asked in front of congress, at that time they knew about 118 appearances at the white house. he responded -- they said what

are you doing here? he said, it was an easter egg roll. that's not a very good way to explain why you were there every 9 days during your tenure as irs commissioner for nearly 4 years. so i am very dubious about this. i being this is a question we need to have a lot of answers to. and the answers are going to be difficult because this is the point at which the white house is going to assert executive privilege and say he was inside the white house, giving policy advice as part of the white house policy process. that's none of your, congress, what that was. but in this instance, i think the perception of white house involvement in this is going to require the white house going further than they might be inclined to go. >> i want to say, i would not be very, very curious, if it weren't for the fact that the secretary of health and hhs secretary sebelius had about the same number of visits, i would not be suspicious. but the disparity has got me.

we go to dick durbin, investigated -- sent a letter to the irs about your group. what's your beef with dick durbin? >> my beef with dick durbin, he went on "fox news sunday" and chris wallace asked him a question, on october 10, 2010, you wrote a letter -- dick durbin -- to the irs, demanding that they investigate a conservative policy group. dick durbin, to his credit, didn't back down like a lot of democrats are. he said, yeah, i admit i asked the irs to target a conservative group. chris followed up and said, why didn't you mention any liberal groups? durbin had a laughable response which was to say, i thought if the irs investigated crossroads gps, all the rest of them would get the message. look, that's simply not true. if they were investigating a

group i helped organize and helped to raise moan for as a volunteer, the only people laughing would be liberal 501c 4s who have been acting exactly the way as crossroads gps. it was clear durbin wanted to target crossroads because we're a conservative group and he's a liberal. he said, they are boasting about raising a lot of money. that's not true. the only thing in the fall that came close to me boasting about the money we were raising, after he sent the letter to the irs, 2 days later, i wrote a wall street journal column that after president obama attacked our group as a threat to democracy, american crossroads and crossroads gps raised $14 mill globe two weeks. the democrats have had these kind of groups around forever. they didn't complain when the sierra club, planned parenthood,

committee, not even with standing this rosen matter, was dismal. it's time for mr. holder to step aside. >> even if you accept the explanation that holder did nothing wrong, he's not in charge of his department. he's lost the trust of congress. i submit the american people as well. he ought to resign forth with. >> we need a new new attorney general, especially with all these matters that will need version from the irs to the doj's investigation of reporters. >> should oholder quit? >> he's a close friend of mine, one of the giants in the legal community, a member of the judiciary committee calls for his resignation. when they say this man was gone beyond the pale of his office, i agree with that. >> greta: congressman michael grimm joins us. nice to see you. >> nice to see you. >> greta: you're a former fbi agent. you think the attorney general

should resign. is there anything he can say or do to convince you to stay? >>ç no. itios gon beyond the details ats point. there's a pattern. fast and furious, a border patrol agent lost his life and no one was held accountable. what's interesting there, a lot of people don't know, the fbi was supposed to investigate that as far as, you know, what did the attorney general play, and the fbi was told to stand down, leave the room, that the attorney general said that the department of justice will handle it internally. again, that's one problem. then that leads right into our friend john corzine with m.f. global. he had major political ties. for his defense, he hired eric holder's old law firm. there's ties here everywhere. $1.6 billion is gone, and no onç knows why. >> greta: his old law firm is probably 500, 600 lawyers, not

like his sister, brother and cousin and everything. >> of course, but again it seems that it doesn't smell right. you know, someone that -- the trustees' report comes out, and it's replete with]/v: contradis of what john corzine said in committee. you look at a pattern, with the ap, the fox reporter, at this point i don't see how the american people have confidence in the department of justice. this is overlapped with all types of scandals at the white house level. so when you look at all of it -- i actually think it helps the president at this point for the attorney general to step down. >> greta: in terms of the testimony before -- i'm sort of stuck on his testimony. i want to know why he made the statements he did on the 15th of may, whether he misled, lied, told the truth, whatever. do you want him to explain that. >> i think at this point he has to. listen, he's a very intelligent man. he's been around the block he

knows how to testify. you're going to parse words there. the correct question to hone in it to ask about an investigation as opposed to a prosecution. >> greta: he may know how to parse words, but he knew what they were asking. >> no question. >> greta: if he was being slick, that reflects poorly on him, him carrying out his job. >> absolutely. that's the bigger issue here. at the end of the day, the american people -- and the rank and file that work in the department of justice -- have to have confidence and respect for the leadership. i think leadership 101 dictates if you lose that, if you lose that respect, you cannot lead. that's really the issue here. that's why it's bigger of just the issue of what he said at this specific hearing. >> greta: congressman, sorry to interrupt you. i got to go. thank you. >> thank you. >> greta: news in the icer scandal just a short time ago in washington. tea party leaders from more than 30 groups meeting, coming up with a battle plan to fight back

jersey, this next report may set you on fire. if you don't live in new jersey, better hope your state is not doing the sameñr thing. get this one. new jersey inmates have collected $23 million in government benefits, benefits they are not entitled to receive. the new jersey state controller joins us. i should say, that $23 million was over what period of time? >> over a 22-month period, between 2009 and 2011. >> greta: before july 1, 2009, were benefits also given, not just part of your report? >> yeah. we picked a 22-month period as a sample. we're presuming that the same lack of procedures were evidentw even inç the earlier time peri, really running up through the time that we issued our report. now all the agencies running these programs have committed to us to put the right safeguards in place. up until our audit, the data wasn't being checked to makeç sure that these prisoners, who were behind bars, were not being

paid government benefits to which they were not entitled. >> greta: know it's a lot worse than the $23 million. $23 million covers the period you audited. how does this happen? >> basically the safeguards weren't in place that should have been in place. there are lists of individuals who are locked up in both state and county prisons, and there are lists of people who are benefiting under these government programs. the agencies running these programs never compared those two lists. they never took the data that was available on incarceration and took a look at whether any of these people who are locked up are getting things like unemployment benefits or nutrition benefits to which they obviously wouldn't be entitled if they're in jail. for example, in the unemployment program, you have to be available to work and able to work under the law if you're going to qualify for unemployment benefits. obviously if you're in prison, europe notç available to work. but because these data points were not being checked and squared against each other, all
