light we'll have coverage tomorrow, fox and friends begins 4:00 a.m. central daylight time tomorrow, 5:00 on the east coast. our coverage continues now on fox news channel. i'm shepherd smith, thank you for being with us, i'll see you monday. >> as shepherd was just saying another night of extreme weather in america's heartland. hello, welcome to america's news headquarters. >> i'm kelly wright. oklahoma city area getting slammed with tornadoes. the warnings then moving to st. louis, missouri. and parts of illinois and iowa. the broad storm hitting oklahoma city and suburbs friday, causing havoc on interstate 40 which is now shut down. a trooper says the storm crumbled cars and tractor trailer as long major artery connecting suburbs located east and west of the city. we have a confirmed death of a mother and a baby were killed.

near their vehicle. a number of injuries and possibly more deaths being reported as well. but numbers still need to be confirmed. at least 54,000 people at this hour without powerjfñr and hail and rain making it difficult for responders trying to get to these people. rick we've seen a lot of storms fwhu is a massive system. >> yes. when you think it happened just about 11 days after what we saw in the same area that is more scary for people, it appears at some point a tornado in the moore, oklahoma area not as strong of a tornado but that scene is scary well. still have a volatile situation going on now. tornado warnings in affect across parts of central illinois now. towards lake ramsey. so mostly we're going to see strong winds in this system.

could see smaller tornadoes with this. very heavy rainfall across missouri. in areas over 10 inches of rain. you might see another four to fiveñr inches of rain. big flootding concerns here and flooding concerns down around oklahoma city. you have tornadoes moving through started in the el reno area, now about six hours ago. take a look at this very heavy rain still falling here. that means big time flooding going on and there have been many storms and so much heavy rain. it's hard to get in to assess the damage. so it's going to be until tomorrow when this rain let's up. we're going to watch flooding concerns right around oklahoma city area and that is flash flood warnings going on. flash flooding across oklahoma city. towards springfield andh-ç ino

st. louis. two more days of severe weather. a threat for severe weather, the worst is over. we can see a tornado pop up here across that i 44 area. tomorrow, same storm system, not as severe as today or yesterday. and around buffalo area, down to big bend in texas looking at severe weather, more wind ask hail damage. go together day on sunday.çó and there is washington, d.c., baltimore, new york, hartford and upstate new york and pennsylvania threats of tornadoes sunday as two. more days before we're done. >> rick, i want to get back to what you're talking b we saw

tornadoes touching down in that area. one of the thing is the fact these are rain-soaked tornadoes which means it made it through a difficult driving because most people were driving into these areas seeing that the rain was wrapped around the tornado z not knowing they're going into a tornado. explain that, please. >> not only making it difficult to drive but a lot of times you want to get that visual indication. that wasn't the case. so much moisture with storms here and tornadoes were close together. cells were close together sou didn't have an idea a tornado was coming. there was a weather channel storm chasing crew out there. their truck was tossed in the air and crashed and everybody is okay. but storm chasers out there, professionals looking at equipment were not able to get out of the way of thefá storms.

that makes it incredibly dangerous. pictures coming in to us are from earlier. that is storm tracker 9. it's not live. but these are images of the tornado. the initial tornado swept oklahoma city around 30 miles west in the town of el reno south interstate 40 was at its strongest. at one point a large wedge tornado up to about a mile wide. but then, the storm became chaotic. multiple tornadoes within on one-storm area a chaotic situation impacting the entire oklahoma city area. >> yes. we're following this and appreciating you're here to tell us about it. you and shep talking about how surprised you were to see many cars on the highway. we're gok bring in someone to talk about that now. what we report that five dead

now in oklahoma. joining us now is betsy rand ravel. it's been a very difficult day and evening for you. but i want to get back to what we saw earlier, that is the fact that on the highway there were so many cars and the governor said there were enough electric warnings to tell people get off the highway. do not get on the highway in the case of a dangerous storm. were you sur praised to see so many people get to the highway? >> well, i wasn't surprised and here is why. it was rush hour traffic. it's a friday. yes, we had warnings in place but also know that interstate 40 and 45 are kor or dor tluz our state. so people traveling across the country today may not have known and may not have been aware that there were such

deadly tornadoes that were coming through. and you know the weird thing about the tornado today is that they were so dramatic and parallelled and traveled on interstate 40 and 35. so some people may have been kaugts unaware. and once traffic started having crashes people were stuck in traffic and had nowhere to go. >> well, yes. so what did you have to do in that situation to get them off the highway? perhaps to some areas of safety? >> well it was a dangerous situation for troopers because what happened was when the crash started occurring the people injured, people that, like the mother and child swept out of their vehicle and sucked up into the storm. >> so unfortunate. >> that absolutely so heart breaking we were forced to without of harm's way. we tried to ferry people out of the interstate and to a

safe location off of the highway but had them out there, windows broke out of patrol cars, troopers getting hailed on checking on overturned vehicles or vehicles that collided. we have power lines line across interstate 40 and with rain we had water so high that you can -- it was impa passable so we had to get people off of the interstate. then, like you said, people were essentially sitting buck bucks -- ducks we're telling them lay down on the ground in a ditch, any low lying area and pray the tornado doesn't suck you up. >> you got that right. just pray80jñ,xd find cover. officer randolph i wanted to ask another question. now the tornado is seemed to have subsided you have a lot of rain. you have possibility of flash flooding. where do you do things stand in terms of your response to

situations that might be dire throughout oklahoma? >> what we'll have to do is z.probably tomorrow is have to go house by house, looking for victims that are trapped, hopefully finding people that have taken shelter with debris trapped them in there that. is the best bet. the thing we're hoping foremost. we're hoping that that fatality number doesn't increase and we are hoping against all hope that there are people that are just unable to communicate with loved ones to let them know they're okay what. we'll do is just assess the damage and hopefully get people to emergency facilities to get medical treatment if needed. >> as you know the last week in moore, oklahoma, there were 24 deaths as a result of one tornado there. >> right. >> people are ready and on edge. there is nervous feelings they

probably just thought it's gone. because they're talking about the sun is out, things should be fine, then, the storm comes out of nowhere. it had been predicted people perhaps gave it an attitude of if it comes we'll be ready for it and we've seen storms pop up anywhere, at any time this, was massive. >> it was massive and so erratic. there were so many them. we'd have first responders out and in a collision scene working thinking the storm moved past. thenei3l$w we'd have to seek shelter. there in a lok. the only place you're safe in a tornado is underground. next best place in a will he-lying area such as a ditch. we strongly recommend people

do not try to outrun a storm in cars and they don't drive in the storms and then, they don't try to seek shelter under elevated structures because those are the most-dangerous places you can be when a tornado comes through. >> i was talking to a gentleman from oklahoma who built a shelter tr. -- there. he recalls going through some of the worst tornadoes and his family had him laying down on potato piles. heñr5ked about how this new shelter they'd built had concrete and everything you need. even things you can use to dig out of it. should a lot of debris pile on top that have shelter and i was struck by that. to have this happen today, the irony of having that conversation with him this morning and the governor telling us that oklahoma city is a wonderful place to live. i've lived there in tulsa. if ever going to be in a struggle or direness and disasters this

is the place to be because people are strong and they rally together. are you finding that true? >> absolutely. i'm from new mexico but i'm an okie transplant since i was 11 years old. i love oklahoma not crazy about tornadoes and the older i get the more healthy fears i have for tornadoes. we sought shelter yesterday. it's important people recognize just how unpredictable tornadoes can be. and it is important you listen and that you heed warnings so that you seek shelter early. that you don't wait too late. but oklahoma is a resilient part of the country to live. it's a beautiful country. beautiful people live here. strong sense of family and country well. know it's a wonderful place to live. i don't think you'd get anyone

in oklahoma would tell you they love tornadoes. all of us are in fear of it. if you stay alert, you can stay alive. if you listen to weather forecasts and don't take it for granted because they move quickly. they form, reform and move. it's important people pay attention. >> absolutely. before i let you go, i want to confirm fatalities we know of near oklahoma city area. we're getting reports of two deaths. earlier there was a report of five deaths can you confirm that number? >> i can only confirm the two. those are the only two that we worked. the mother and child. so i only know of the two. but that doesn't mean there aren't more. those are just the ones i know of. >> i know you have your work cut out for you. thanks for joining us at this hour.

and witnessed two tornadoes in the first storm one going through the heart of oklahoma city. tried to stay with it. tornadoes were almost impossible to see. so dangerous that i bailed on the course. >> i understand that initial tornado that you're talking about had become a wedge tornado about a mile wide this, is something you're experienced with. you chase tornadoes for a living. what would it take for to you bail? >> problem was rain wrapped around the tornado to the point you couldn't see it. a lot of other storm chasers fell victim to that tornado. were hit and suffered injuries and damage to vehicles. like i said the risk was just too great. the point where we're getting that shot is just not worth your life. >> tony what do you see now? >> i'm trying to get around

oklahoma city right now. i saw several house that's had been hit. they were doing search and rescue on many of those, they were also on i 40. between el reno and yukon. probably half a dozen semies. >> tony i understand flooding is a problem now. a big concern in this area. what are conditions like in terms that have? >> well, going through oklahoma city is one of the areas i've been through. there is standing water on the road. west of town were blocked because of heavy rain and water flowing over. flooding is a issue. i don't know how bad sit inbound. >> were you around this area when the tornado hit?

may"n 20th, killed 24 people there? >> actually you know it's funny that day i was in route and drove into oklahoma city that day and just had a bad feeling that day. and i did not go down¡>ñ there and for me was not part that have event. a tragic event. you know, just last week told me not to chase this week and. >> the timing of the tornado you know rush hour, people traying to get home led to people on i 40 and you know, potentially we're hearing at least two deaths as a result of that. let us know to go to quick

welcome back at this hour you usually watch o'reilly but in light of what happened in oklahoma and st. louis we're now reporting on violent weather taking place in the plains states, mid west. weather hitting missouri. joining us now live on the boy is dana. we understand of course and right lielee so, st. louis cardinals game, wisely postponing that game due to the threat of severe weather. what happened in your neighborhood? >> yeah. absolutely.

we live in downtown st. louis. and so i think llt of folks watching weather/sóc were concerned a storm would mimic our good friday tornado. it's only miles north of busch stadium. just to be safe most of what we saw were heavy winds, and pea-sized hail. you never want to take a chance when you have people downtown. >> you said they call that had game off scheduling it for another night. the worse part of it took place north of st. louis. there were some spotty -- some movement, you know, south of st. louis city but otherwise, we didn't get near what oklahoma did and our prayers are with everybody down in oklahoma city. they got it again and deserved

it least. >> well said. our prayers are out there for you as well, as well as people in oklahoma but let me ask you. talking about some of the weather and some final like activity. did any that have happen near interstate 70? >> there is a lot of media confusion on what happened out there in earth city. we know there was a confirmed tornado near weldon spring that's is probably from 30-40 minutes west of st. louis. earth city is east of walden spring. iag%h think they're working on confirmation on whether it's a tornado or strong winds. winds at 90 miles per hour there was damage to a holiday inn out there it had been reported because crews set up a0hkk contingency plan. somehow that, was reported on local news here as it being

mass casualties out in earth city at holiday inn so everybody in st. louis is very concerned about that. and then, finally more clarifications came out and other networks refrained from stating it was mass casualties just no injuries no, deaths. just damage. lambert international airport's air field was closed down right now. >> that is good to hear they can get back to normal. that had to be a frightening experience for people having seen what is taking place not so far away from them in oklahoma. >> yes. >> what did you personally do to the storm since you're in downtown area and the game being canceled what kind of activity did you get yourself involved in? >> funny thing is that my family and i were out to dinner just sort of watching what the radar was saying

tracking everything on the phones and then, on the national weather service said take a look at the path. we're in the path of one of the watches on the radar. and we needed to get home so we got the truck and went home hunkered down in the basement i was, the sky was light enough to see it andñr it was very odd on the east side of us we're driving along the mississippi river. east side a normal, sunny evening sky then on the left side, i don't know how to describe that color it wasn't purple it was a rust-colored darkness. i don't know how to describe it. >> like angry sky? >> very angry. >> bizarre. >> yes. >> everybody was racing to get home. i know that. >> yes. i don't blame them for doing

thachl trying to get home and find cover, shelter. when you have a warning up there and you've seen what happened to neighbors south of you in oklahoma we can't forget what happened in moore. you know? last monday with 24 people killed because of the tornado touching down there. 45,000 people without power there? >> yes. they think they'd be more. i know there is sort of fielding all of this, all reports of this. and a lot of it6q-ñá, a lot of individuals don't have power have interthet. so thousands of individuals that you can see everyone on twitter now in the st. louis area discussing how they have no power and sort of spreading information as to where it is expected to go and that is of course everyone would rather have power outages than anything other than, any sort

emergency management. thank you for taking time this evening to join us. >> you're welcome. >> the first thing i want to get clarified from you is if you're able to, the number of deaths that happened, confirmed in your state at this point? >> well in, our area we're having two fatalities confirmed. we have not gotten updated numbers from that, that search and rescue operations continue west of the metro area. >> okay. and to that being the mother and baby who were reportedly killed along interstate 40? >> correct. >> can you tell us what happened there? >> from my understanding they were, for whatever reason found themselves in either high winds or tornado. the vehicle left the road and was turned oup side down. >> i understand that that was a big problem for people because this storm hit during

rush hour, it appeared to just be rain. so people didn't know they're driving into a tornado they thought they're driving into heavy rain. tell us about the situation. i understand crumpelled cars? tractor trailers overturned?. >> correct. what you're saying is correct. definitely complicated knit addition to rush hour traffic large amounts of traffic there because of the storms we had a train on the storms coming through two, three tornadoes on the ground. following same track along interstate 40. >> i know this is part of tornado alley. you're used to storms and now hoe thousand deal with them.

compare this situation, these temperatures so quickly with other situations. that you have had to deal with. >> well, we're not strangers to the situation. oklahoma ranks third in the nation in disasters to so natural zafters are something that occur frequently despite the fact we're not a coastal state are a large state there is region wrnal planning activities. oklahomains know how to take care of business. we step up and take care of neighbors and families. and friends. and do well with the situations. awareness is a big issue for us. with you do have severe weather when this occurs people respond quite well. and response is quite strong. great team effort. >> can you tell us about the situation on the ground right now?

what have you seen in terms of damage? how wide spread is the damage now? >> damage extends four, maybe five county as long interstate 80 and south along interstate 35 most of thewd?m>÷ damage is g to be from flooding situations right now. with a great deal of wind damage. tornado damage appears to be minute ma. we do have current flash flood warnings out. and we're going get a tremendous amount of large hail. >> what about moore oklahoma where the ef 5 got hit last monday. >> they got hit again tonight. they have a lot of power lines down, again, and a lot of tree

damage, again. they have hail, flood bug not experiencing additional tornado damage i'm aware of. efforts continue to clean up and restore from events a week ago. and if they can move forward there is resources on the ground. resiliencey continues to kick in. >> i have friends that live there in oklahoma. i was able to get in touch with them, one of them her mother was in moore, oak okay last week on monday. she happened to be in oklahoma city in the hospital tonight when the tornado hit. there is a point people say enough is enough. this is crazy and ridiculous. you know, what do you say to residents that are going to wake up again and deal with damage, death and injuries? now, dealing with flooding? >> it's difficult to explain a lot of the thing that's occur and why they occur but i think

the key point we're going focus is on our ability to recover and help one another. people come out tomorrow, sun's up, weather looks great we'll clean up and restore, continue to restore. >> yes. >> you need everyone to stay home tonight. >> correct. >> yes. getting on the road is not a good proposition at night we still have severe thunderstorms in the area and a great deal of flooding. and a lot of rail around. >> in terms of retrieving vehicles on interstate 40 how is that progressing? do you need assistance? >> it's progressing quite well. we continue to have traffic back ups. but highway patrol troll, they're very good at getting roadways open. being able to move vehicles out of the way. >> david barns joining us from

progression of the violent, massive storm system also, can you tell us just how bad damage is? what organizations like red cross are helping now? >> hi there, kelly. what a night it has been in america's heart land we've watched as storms have swept through the area and won't know the extent of the damage until the light comes up until tomorrow and perhaps, not until the next few days. most damage has to do with overturned cars, cars flipped on the highway. power outages, 50,000 now without power. and we know that is going to cause problems. haishlgs debris that can be fatal. we heard about two fatalities. this story of a mother and baby kaild longc i 40 we don't

know how many patient they've received. we have a report from kf 04. three medical centers have taken in 14 injuries, two fatal, one pediatric critical. there could be more injured we don't know about yet we've heard the woman from patrol on this program said tomorrow they'll go house to house, searching house to house and looking for people that might be missing. this is the red cross from near oklahoma city. they're gathering around making plans to help people affected by storms, we're not sure how many people were out of their homes tonight. the red cross advising foam contact loved ones through texting or e mails because they say a lot of phone lines could be down. they also have a web site that works well. we want to put that up on the

screen this, is called safe and well.or you can register and let your loved ones know they're okay. just in case phone lines are down this is a great way to let your friends and family know you made it through the stompl and you're okay. the national weather service had been warning people all day about something called a pds. a z.it was one this evening. they put out a warning on ap news wire came acrosses a bulletin. i want to read it to you. telling people to take cover, move to an interior room if you're in a mobile home move to closest shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. hopefully, a lot of people did that this evening. we're going to have reports throughout the night and monitoring this situation. and we'll bring you anything new as soon as we vit. back to you. >> we appreciate that report. and i believe that situation

welcome back to our special storm coverage now. they were rain-wrapped tornadoes touching down throughout oklahoma city area. right at the height of rush hour about 6:00 p.m. their time, 7:00 p.m. here on the east coast. a lot of storm chasers brought us information via video and talking to us. right now, storm chaser greg johnson is going join us. are you there? >> i am. where are you now in terms of where the storm is located?.

>> we're spending the night in oklahoma. we tried to avoidqx you've been talking about. >> those were some massive tornadoes we saw. we're still not sure how many touched down. there is a report there were multiple tornadoes touching down what. did you see? >> we did see multi vortex action happening. south of el reno. and you know, we saw at least five separate tornadoes while chasing today and some on the ground at the same time. and that is a rare situation. it was terrifying dr. considering how close it was and not by our choice. >> too close for comfort, right, greg? >> yes. it was. and i mean, there is lots of
