another night of extreme weather in america's heartland. they did not need it. hello, welcome to america's news head quarter autos i'm kelly wright. oklahoma city area getting slammed with multiple tornadoes first. the warnings then moving to st. louis, missouri and arts of ill skpil iowa.qñi this broad storm hitting oklahoma city and causing havoc on interstate 40. oklahoma patrol trooper says the storm crumbled car as long the major artery connecting suburbs located east and west of the city.

there is a tractor trailer rig flying over him. we've confirmed a mother and baby were unfortunately killed their bodies reportedly found near their vehicle. numbers have yet to be confirmed. some 54,000 people without power, hail making it difficult for responders to we'll see them get to the ground as soon as sun rises tomorrow, rick this started around 6:00 p.m. >> yes. so some areas have seen over five inches of rain. what that means big time flooding going on. and so much rain ask so dig organized. it's been hard to do an

tulsa. it goed towards joplin area. rain around oklahoma city south ofye=yo i 40 now building back in. more rain across that area. flooding concerns yet, very dangerous conditions tonight across much of oklahoma into kansas. take a look at this stretch across missouri we've got flash flooding occurring now from this heavy rain. tornado concerns will continue. down to texas around del rio i 20 and i 10 meet around there. and sunday, take a look at this area, much of maine and west of boston around hartford, pennsylvania, baltimore and washington, d.c. that is are

putting out information and we talked to someone from st. louis tonight. telling us a holiday inn was damaged there had been reports perhaps there were injured -- injuries there and point out the major league baseball shut down busch stadium. the cardinals scheduled to play the giants what. a great move they made because that could have been disastrous right there. downtown. >> and another update to the airport that is close to there. lambert field. they, that is closed currently because storm causing damage to buildings. they're cleaning up as we speak say hag could take a couple hours through 11:30 and midnight tonight. >> it's midnight here on the

east coast and 11:00 there in oklahoma. and so we're following the particulars of what took place there. in oklahoma an afternoon and evening of multiple deadly temperatures taking place, search efforts and clean ups still under way. two deaths. and finding those people just need help. >> yes a long with rain continuing to fall. the threat of flooding and large hail being reported as well. so what can you tell us this evening? >> you're mentioning of the flooding and assessment that needs to be done. they're having problems in missouri and oklahoma i've been monitoring local reports

that have been going on there and i can tell new oklahoma they're having a difficult time getting to people and just getting to property because flooding is so bad this can pick up on things rick is talking about. this is something that you find in a lot of these events. you find it moreuñr when landi. what you see happen in the initial hours of a disaster is a vastly different story than what you find 12 hours later then, again, 24 hours later. we found out as time went on, they're able to figure out what is going on. they had benefit at that time because that tornado that hit in the afternoon so they had benefit of day life. folks in

oklahoma and missouri don't have that now. they have rain they're dealing with, and rain. they have darkness, wind and rain. we zront an honest assessment which is part of the reason folks might be wondering. it's because we still don't know what is happened but as hours pass and first responders get closer to the area we'll have a better idea of what will happen. we're waiting to hear. we know there are 80,000 people senate of oklahoma without power. and there are three hospital that's are treating 50 people. five of those are in critical condition. one is a child and two people have died. a mother and a child. >> all right. bring us to any additional updates as you have them.

actually spoke with someone at baptist hospital they moved patientszv there in oklahoma city into the hallway. the tornado swept through. >> we just got an update now in oklahoma city. five deaths have taken place so far. from this massive storm that swept through. and we couldn't get a real confirmation. confirming five deaths have taken place. we've heard from officer from oklahoma patrol says in morning they may find other injuries. the rain still going on and hail and flooding makes it difficult for emergency response crews to get out there for an operation of

recovery or rescue at this point. >> at this point medical examiner saying injury number is 50? >> yes. >> that is expected to rise. >> we hope it doesn't. on this phone we have storm case thatter -- storm chaser kevin ravel and what he has seechbl are you with us? >> yes. >> how difficult has it been for you?. >> well,q it's been a tough chase day overall. it's starting out onlp rain rest. that became tough to see any visible tornado. you knew they were in there but there is, it made it difficult to report as to locations where tornadoes were. >> yes.

and kevin did you come across people that needed help? there are people stranded on highways there because look, oklahoma city is a major city. a lot of people travel through there to get from one state to another. hit at the right time. at 6:00 p.m. the height of rush hour. people stranded and could you offer asy stance to them? >> never encountered stranded people. we were being followed, if you will by a tornado. and so we were being forced to stay out ahead. >> you said being chased on the interstate by the tornado? >> yes it was behind us. moving along the interstate in the same direction we're going. we're going east.

there is we never encountered damage or stranded vehicles or are damaged vehicles because we never got back into the damage. >> you outchased it. how wide it was and was there a debris sneeld. >> yes. it was widest about a mile wide as far as damage it could be doings>ú/>ñ. like i said after the original tornado the rest is very rapid rain. >> wow. >> thank you for chasing and giving information about that.

david, thank you. since i spoke with you last we have been able to confirm from medical customer there in oklahoma five deaths in fact are being reported as a result of this latest tornado or tornadoes to sweep through your state. can you tell us anymore about those deaths? >> i do not have specificñi information but i kf spoke they were doing search and rescue that is west of oklahoma city ask storms began. >> and i understand a lot of the people who were trapped and injured were along this i 44 corridor connecting east to west there. >> that is correct. that is as well as southern part of the united states. so high traffic counts. bad time for this type of

weather to be occurring. >> can you bring us up to speed on the damage that you've been able to witness and see at this point? i know it's dark now. you're dealing with heavy rain, flooding hail.xfcñr what have you been able to witness? >> stillñv various aspects of damage. it appears significant structure damage is west of oklahoma city. that is partially rural area, too. a lot of horse ranches and farms have been damaged. >> how many counties are involved?. >> approximately six counties here. >> what do you expect so-to-see when everyone wakes up in the morn something what do you need to let them snow. >> going to find damage that may not have been as evident through the night and dark.

and people displaced around might have increased reports from that. still experiencing a great deal of flooding. so we're going to be dealing with that. >> it's open. i 40 has been opened. there is in terms of shelters? >> yes. the american red cross responsible for sheltering operations almost a week ago. do not know if any counts of people being added to those shelter facilities but there will be some in western area autos we do have that area before. you're telling people to text each other or e mail each snorj. >> it's important accountibility

now things calmed down a little bit in that area. the major part of the work is still to be done. searching for possible victims and helping those who have been injured and assessing damage. we're live in the weather bureau. what is the latest in terms of the death toll and injuries? what is being done for injured and those left without a roof tonight? >> there would be people in all of those situations.

we won't know until tomorrow or days from now but have a late report from the medical examiner suggesting that there have been five fatalities. so far, we've heard about a lot of overturned cars, cars flipped on the highway. and 50,000 people without power that will cause problems. soft ball sized hail, lots of debris that could be fatal. we have a heart breaking report of a mother and her baby kill add long i 40 west of oklahoma city. hospitals set up for a code yellow we know have have taken in many patients tonight. red cross working to help people affected by the storms telling people to text or e mail not to get on the phone phone lines mighti,fbwñç down.

sargeant thanks for joining us. i know it's late for you out there. your city, moore has been hit again a week ago you went through this on a monday, school hour, 24 deaths as a result of one single tornado coming through. what has the situation been like there today having to see the threat of the tornadoes again? >> doing all day. everyone knew there is a pretty good phone shall for dangerous weather. and oddly enough the storm came through it was northwest of our city which storms travel northeast we thought we're okay.

it came through the city. >> how much damage did you receive? there are reports about cars being damaged and thrown about. but as far as we know the loss of life and moore. >> we zront a report of loss of life at this point we have a lot of flooding which kind of prohibited officers to get around in the city at least half of the city is out of power now. it appears just north of the last area we had strong winds and possibly small tornadoes. we haveht multiple power lines down. and we don't have reports of fatalities. >> this storm hampers your

efforts to restore and rebuild your community. how far does this set you back? >> get a better idea.2i we got officers driving around in the flood to see what the damage is it's just very dark right now w out power the storm is passed and it's very dark. it's going to be difficult until morning to find out how far this will set us back. >> i've got to ask a question. your community touched our hearts nationwide. touching the heart of the president and those near and dear to this country. especially children saying yes, jesus loves me. but the tornado was hitting their school. what it shows the nation is

people of faith and heart and people of a sense of purpose they'd recover and rebuild. tell me about the community. >> we're friendly people and there is just outpouring of support. we have devastation happen before. you see the gf people that come out in our state. whenever there is someone in need. it's a large area. and when have you sup export volunteers it makes you feel good as a city. but you know, just -- really state wide it's oklahoma spirit. coming somewhere else, everyone just heads out to go help out. >> sargeant thank you for

louis. there are trucks flipped over, lots of ambulances on the scene there. when the storms first hit it was littered with crumbled cars and tractor trailers. i 40 is a major artery connecting suburbs east and west of the city. we're told it had been reopened. number of injuries and possibly more deaths being reported but we have that number so confirmed number of deaths at five that is from oklahoma state medical examiner office. thousands of people without power at this hour. and hail, heavy rain making it difficult for responders to even try and reach these people. we are live in the fox weather center with the latest. so rick what is the weather situation as these first responders trying to get in there? >> we have tornadoes we're going to be done with tornadoes much of the evening. all watch boxes think we're

going deal with come around 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning have within issued so we're taking this tonight. here is a tornado watch box until 6:00 a.m. eastern time for the state of indiana to the south.xd south that have i 70, i 80 area. e5 ofcross7 connecticut. the -- kentucky. the line of storms get rgd to move into parts of indiana. two tornado watch boxes in affect from 4:00 in the morning and a new watch box for areas of eastern oklahoma and northwestern parts of and wg with straight winds here across areas of indiana. that line will be in towards indiana and then, one tornado warning two tornado warnings on the same cell here. grove oklahoma cutting into the southwestern corner of missouri.

just south of that we have a tornado warning issued just souchblg interstate 40. then storms around oklahoma city are severe with large hail and winds that are probably%cmh0÷ 60-70 miles per . tornado threat now is wurngs two more days of threats, guys tomorrow down across parts of southern areas of texas down towards del rio. and then stretching to the mississippi river valley, ohio river valley. sunday, just moving over towards east and towards big cities. it's going to be farther off. i hear you talking about the watches? >> i'm going to ask you about that. >> that is something issued for a long time. they have a tornado watch that is some they say there is

going to be large and long lived tornadoes. so a dangerous situation is what we had with the storms. not something came about there is some warning language after joplin. if the strd big they'll call it destructive but those pds watches they've been doing them. >> we'll check back with you of course. >> important to get terminology right. but we want to talk about what is going on with the storm. as you know, when these hit a lot of storm chasers get out there. there are calling these storms around. you might be thinking what is going on in their minds. greg johnson is a storm chaser following the storms as they touched down. this was a crazy exkbreerns for you today.

>> this is very, very difficult from a norm experience for me, anyway this, is the first time i've ever felt any life was in jeopardy. >> what happened? >> well, you know we're caught in a situation widely reported about the traffic on the road. and we're in a situation where we're trapped due to traffic. and temperatures passed overhead n a farm yard to the right side flew in front of us over our head and much hit our vehicle. we had to put night the ditch just so what it will lift it off the ground. >> when that tornado hatched near you did you sigh debris this that?

>> this debris was right. [[l 50 yards in front of us. a truck flying through the air. parts of the buildings flying through the air and into the truck and over the vehicle. it was terrifying. >> that is incredible. you visualize it. at this point based on that, what kind of debris or damage will people likely see in the morning when the sun rises? >> i'm guessing that in the areas that got hit by any of the tornadoes are going to be experiencing you know the trees stripped of their leaves and bark. you're going see areas where homes have had their roofs ripped off. and this is same damage. certainly there will be areas. we passed an area of highway.

we saw trees for a half mile. and we saw, i don't know whether it's that way, but in that path there is a bridge looking like a section of old iron bridge that had been destroyed but we don't know if that is before beforehand. >> and earlier in the day when this hit around the 6:00 p.m. hour, oklahoma time, we have received reports from one storm chaser who said that he witnessed a tornado wiping out a mobile home park. swallowing it up. have you heard reports that have? of such? >> you know when we were on the tornado warning storm from the very inception, and frankly it only lasted 20 minutes all of our communications equipment was ripped off of our truck so until i got to the hotel room

i hadn't heard reports so i don't have knowledge of that. >> so you had no choice but to duck and run for are you ever. and i think a lot of people who were stranded were not stranded if you will but trapped on the highway. they had no place to go. at all. >> it was really dangerous we saw many situations where people panicked a little bit. ev it's a stressful situation we saw people gathering under overpasses and things like this. what it does is creates a traffic jam and people are trapped oof when i said you're crazy, but you're not. you do this for helping people by gleaning some valuable

information. why do you continue? >> well, i'll tell you one of the things that happened tonight and we're super proud of is that we have two vehicles in our team and though our vehicle is disabled at that point, our, the other member of the team they were out doing search and rescue. they pulled a police vehicle out of a flood situation and going home to home near the path and helping rescue people. we're putting ourselves in the danger zone. what happens is that terrible things happen.keú4 and you know, being on scene is important and critical path we hope to provide. >> thank you for being out there.

i was following ow twitter, i think it wasarn 7:30, you said you thought you heard tornadoes, sierence going off there in the hospital. >> caller: yeah, actually. i walked outside. we knew that the storm was coming in between 4:00 and 6:00. and so i had gone outside to kind of see what was going on. it was raining and so there were cars in the garage, you know, people that had just pulled in and were circled around into the garage, which i guess i didn't realize, you know, that people were coming off the highway and what all was going on because i had been inside the hospital. and then the sirens were going off. i came back inside and took the elevator back up to my mom's room. i said, well, it doesn't look like the hospital's doing anything, but, you know, maybe we are safe or whatever. and about the time i saw the emergency [inaudible] -- saying you need to be on the ground, you know, the announcement that

goes up for the hospital and for the all the workers, so they start bringing everybody out. apparently, just for our particular floor, for the people in our floor, but they moved them out into -- first the hallway. and then -- then it was into -- another little hallway. >> so they moved the patients in the hallway in an effort to keep them safe, just in case. >> caller: yeah, because we were on the ninth floor and there were windows in there. so they moved them into interior area where is, you know, there are no windows. and so, you know, you had some patients that were not very -- [inaudible] -- my mother was in a bed. some were able to move and then husome people like me that had their phones and were trying to listen and had the various broadcasts going on. >> you said after the storm passed through, no damage at baptist hospital. but you said it was very odd,

like daylight afterwards? >> caller: yeah. it was very strange because i had been looking out prior to them evacuating us out into the hall and it started to get really dark. after they gaver gave the all clear, i looked out and it just -- it was like where's the sun coming from? it wasn't the sun, but it had been so dark because of the storm. >> you are from moshings oklahoma. your mom was there when the tornado went through there last week. have you heard from anyone in moore tonight? >> caller: i have not. i have not heard from anybody in moore. i have a cousin in uconn and the flood is just so bad now. it's frustrating when i took a picture earlier today and sent it, it was just pouring again. so have you people that are stranded... all over the place. >> i want to clarify.
