large tornado, black wall, it was coming right at us. normally, obviously, we're not normally that close. this situation evolved very fast and the tornado strengthened incredibly rapidly and took a right turn right at us. >> one of your brother storm chasers, greg johnson, verified what was going on, at the time this video was taken. in fact, his vehicle was forced off the road. did you see that? >> yeah. i believe he was just behind us. we saw -- we saw him in the ditch, during all this, too. i know he drives a little bit higher profile vehicle so i bet the wind got to it really good. >> that is what happened. he said in fact they caught air. at one point he believed there were only two tires on the ground. did you feel like your vehicle was being lifted by the twister? >> you know, the wind was getting really strong. there for a time, i was worried that maybe we would get blown

over. i really wasn't in that spot that we were going to get, you know, lifted and taken away by the tornado. i think it was far enough behind us but we were taking some really strong wind. among the tornadoes you've seen before, brandon, describe for us the level of damage you think this tornado produced. was it more or less? >> i'm not exactly sure what structure this tornado hit but it was very apparent. the radar damage, it was a violent tornado. i'm pretty sure anything in its path would be nearly destroyed. >> as you were proceeding, brandon, were you doing something different, more hazardous than usual in terms of chasing this storm? there's a term called core punching. do you know what that is? >> i've heard that term. i wouldn't say -- i really wouldn't say that, you know. a lot of times core punches is you're driving through the hail to get right in the middle of it. we were in the correct position.
3:02 am
it just turned a little bit south. with the other people in front of us on the road, we got trapped in. >> we were also hearing reports from people describing massive sized hail, anywhere from orange sized hail up to grapefruit sized hail. were you seeing that as you were driving through this mess? >> no. we actually -- we came in from the south so we could avoid all the hail. i don't care about getting my vehicle beat up even though it happened anyway today. we came from the south and we didn't see any hail. >> brandon, one of the things that was terrifying watching this unfold even from here on the east coast was knowing so many people were trapped on the highway. they were trying to escape and the highway turned into a parking lot. why did this storm surprise you and so many people? >> well, you know, the national weather service and the storm prediction center did a great job on predicting this multiple days in advance. i believe somewhere that some media outlet here had told
3:03 am
people they need to try and evacuate or drive south. you know, the roads became flooded, the interstates are flooded, people are trying to drive away from the storm, which was just a terrible idea. i don't -- i don't think the storms surprised so many people as there were so many people stranded on the road. >> yeah. seems like an odd request, right? mostly you always hear about taking shelter and trying to protect yourself. evacuation doesn't usually seem to be part of this. >> i think it was so huge. i mean, they thought it was going to take out oklahoma city, that it was such a massive storm system. brandon, thanks for talking to us. wow, your pictures are incredible and your experience is incredible. we appreciate you sharing it. >> thanks, brandon. two of the storm victims, a mother and her infant baby, their car was swept up in the tornado and the victims sucked out by the powerful winds. they were found on the road. dozens of other people also trapped on the roads as they

water and people stuck out there. imagine all those people out on those roads. at that time, we saw that live shots yesterday of those cars who were stuck there and then the flooding happening, so you can't get anywhere from the flooding, can't get anywhere from the traffic. fortunately, the largest tornado was right there, as you were just seeing that tornado form around el reno, where we had the large wedge tornado and appears the damage right before it got into oklahoma city, still reports of damage, including one in the moore area again, just 11 days after the big tornado that went through there, another tornado, more minor tornado but smaller tornadoes hitting around the oklahoma city area, all of them rain wrapped so you had no visual clue these storms were coming at all. flooding is a big concern. take a look at the weather maps and you can see exactly how much rain has fallen in the last 48 hours. a big swath has seen 4 to 8

michigan was here in the hotel. nebraska was here, washington was here. probably ended up being about 1,000 people down in the storm shelter. everybody was pretty calm. and a lot of people were scared but they were calm and you could hear the wind and the hail. it was pretty crazy. police kept moving people away from the exit from the -- because the storm shelter is an underground parking garage. >> we're looking at these images. for our viewers who aren't familiar with storm shelters, here on the east coast it isn't something we necessarily have, or the west coast. what are we looking at? is this specifically designed for this kind of occurrence, thousands able to crowd into this underground structure? >> what they are really are the underground parking garages. we're right across the street from the renaissance and we're in the sheridan. there's keking tunnels. first everybody got in the tubls but then they were afraid pipes
6:12 am
might bust or something like that so they moved everybody out of the tunnels, out into the regular parking garages. of course, normal human beings, they want to get as close to the exit as possible. and the police actually told us that if it was close to a direct hit, people could be sucked out of the entrance of the parking garang, so they came through and moved everybody back deeper into the parking garage. it was interesting because everybody down there was really calm. you know, obviously, a lot of the players on all the teams were scared. but, you know, we were down there for about an hour and ten minutes, i think, and then we got the all clear. while we were down there the lights went off a couple of times and water was pouring in from the ceiling and pouring in from some pipes. not flooding but water was just pouring in. you could hear the hail. then when we got the all clear, we all came back upstairs to the hotel and ten minutes later the
6:13 am
sirens went off again, so we had to go back down there for 45 minutes. so, it was an interesting evening. we're just happy that everybody's safe. >> coach weekly, that is not the event you were planning this weekend. that is a different life experience. thanks for sharing your pictures and the experience with us. we can only imagine have a thousand players all together in a scary basement setting. >> thanks, ralph. >> thank you very much. coming up here on our show, a story we've been following closely. a 10-year-old girl fighting for her life. the problem, she's two years too young to get the lung that she needs. up next, the very latest on her battle. then as the tornado came in, people huddled together inside a freezer at a gas station. you're about to hear from a woman who thought they were all going to die.
6:17 am
with just weeks to live, this 10-year-old girl, my new friend, sarah is clinging to life as her family tries to get the rules changed so little sarah has a shot at a lung transplant. >> we've been waiting a year and a half for these lungs, but it's no different than any other part of my waiting. because her illness doesn't count like it counts for
6:18 am
everyone. and if her las score doesn't matter and i'm going to send her into this torturesome procedure, how is this going to be okay? how is she going to survive? >> we're joined by sarah's aunt and she joins us with the latest developments. sharon, good morning. >> good morning. >> what is the latest on sarah's case? >> we have a few recent developments. the first was secretary came out yesterday and the law should be changed but she chose not to save sarah and the several kids also in sarah's position waiting for lungs. the family's devastated. we don't understand how this could be the decision she makes. in parallel we've been reaching out to the adult lung centers to see if they could redirect lungs to us based on sarah's illness
6:19 am
severity. they all said yes. we've had hospitals up and down the east coast from florida to massachusetts out to idaho saying, absolutely, they'll let sarah compete based on the severity of her illness. but gift of life and uno say it's not possible, even though that's where we got the original idea to enter this plea. they say, no, it's not possible. they cannot send her lungs. they cannot allow that to happen. so, we're down to sort of a desperate situation. there's not much left. what we have learned is any person, any individual who's choosing to donate their loved one's lungs can insist that they go to sarah. and we think that's the only way sarah will be saved. >> and in terms of saving sarah, you and your family are not asking to take lungs away from another needy recipient. your viewpoint is that sarah is among the sickest and that no matter how -- what your age is,
6:20 am
it should be based upon your level of sickness, not whether you're a child or adolescent or an adult. why do you think that secretary sechlt sebelius has turned her back on sarah? >> we can't figure it out. she clearly agrees that the rule needs to be fixed and children need to be treated fairly and treated equitiably on this list. we know she has the power to make a decision to save sarah's life. we don't know. we can't understand it. >> there's an online petition people can sign to try to drum up more grass root support for sarah. and as you say, anybody can designate her as the recipient. please keep us posted. >> we're going to stay with it,
6:21 am
sharon. >> thank you. thank you, peter. thank you very much. switching gears, can you really catch up on sleep you missed during the week? we need to know this. can you sleep wake on the weekend? we'll separate fact from fiction for you. catch your first fish? then tell him he's special with great father's day gifts from bass pro shops. plus, for a limited time, well-qualified buyers can get 2.99 apr financing on america's favorite boats.

all right. do you have trouble getting your kids to sleep? it turns out there could be a genetic reason. a new study shows your sleeping rituals can be passed down to your kids, believe it or not. >> which habits do we need to worry about? dr. nina radcliff joins us. breaking down the myths of sleeping. let's start with the first myth here that naps can help you catch up with sleep. we hear the benefits of naps. >> that is a fact. not getting a good night's sleep can result in a sleep debt, so if you take a nap during the day, you can pay up on some of this debt. but you should know sleeping for more than one hour or sleeping after 3 p.m. can interfere with your sleep the following night. >> what if i have a triple espresso at 3:00 in the afternoon, is that going to affect my sleep? >> it very well could. i actually had this problem last
6:26 am
night. i was at dinner with my husband and with dessert they brought out the cappuccino thing and i had one and it was lovely but wasn't lovely when i couldn't sleep. caffeine is a stimulant, and most peak effect at 30 to 60 minutes after, it takes about six hours for your body to eliminate half of it. so triple espresso, not a good idea. >> so, it can stay in your system for many more hours than you feel it. >> six hours to get rid of half of up and 24 hours to get rid of it. >> some people like to have a glass of wine to sort of -- >> some people. >> to sort of simmer down at night, but that affects your sleep, we hear. >> yes. a glass of wine might be okay but the whole bottle, probably not. it can help you get to sleep faster but it may cause more interruptions in your sleep. you might wake up. alcohol interferes with rapid eye movement sleep, which is involved in memory consolidation as well as learning -- >> helps induce sleep but won't maintain sleep.
6:27 am
>> it may worsen the sleep. >> even one glass? >> one glass may be okay to get you off to sleep, but the whole bottle -- >> somewhere between one glass and one bottle. >> myth number four on your list here, sleeping more is always healthier. >> that is false. people who sleep more than eight hours a day are more likely to die younger than people who sleep six hours. >> why is that 1234. >> we don't exactly know. we know sleeping like a bear in hibernation may be a symptom of bad health or may cause it. we don't know that. >> sleep apnea. >> snoring like a bear. doctor, thank you for breaking down the myths and facts. coming up on the show, she made a split-second decision to save her life and 100 other people did the same thing. a miracle story from the oklahoma tornadoes. imagine looking out the window and seeing this. brand new details on what caused parts of this plane to go flying off midflight. you don't need those parts. >> who needs a wing. or an engine. i see you have allstate claim free rewards,

fox news alert. we want to bring you the latest pictures and news from our top story, that is these tornadoes devastated around oklahoma city, leading five people dead. one of the hardest hit areas is an area called el reno. let's take a look at the homes and buildings there. you can see lots of things ripped apart and debris tossed
6:32 am
around. >> mike tobin on the ground there. mike, tell us about it. >> reporter: this is the canadian valley technology center, what's behind me is one of those giant air conditioning units you're used to seeing on top of the building. somewhere this came from the roof of the technology center here. ended up down here. as i look around the different kind of debris. this is one of those metal studs that goes inside of a wall. it's a cheaper way to do construction. it's not hard to bend up one of these metal studs. what's hard is to get this out of the wall. this was torn out by the force of the wind. another shot across the parking lot, you can see a vehicle that's been flipped over. as we move our other camera shot around, another vehicle resting on its roof. continuing out this way, i want to show you these trees. it's important to see these trees. can you see all the foliage has been stripped off the trees but what remains is the bark. when you get into the powerful tornadoes, f-4s, f-5s, they will
6:33 am
rip off the bark. that's consistent with what we've heard. not necessarily the most powerful of the tornadoes. on the way in here we saw a lot of high water, standing water, consistent with all of the information that we had thunderstorm on top of thunderstorm, dropping a terrific amount of water, leaving a lot of flooding in the aftermath. guys, back to you in new york. >> wow. that is incredible. >> mike, was it hard to navigate those roads? are a lot of the roadways closed? you were making your way to el reno this morning. was it hard to get there or a straight shot? >> reporter: we did it a lot of it on the interstate and they are open. we encountered small patches over the roads. we took a gamble, it was something we could see across. had a good idea it didn't get too deep in the center, so we made it through that. i don't advise people at home to do that. back on local news we would tell people, don't drive through standing water. they do it and then they end up as lead story with a terrific video and guy standing on top of
6:34 am
his truck. i don't advise people to do that. we did it this time to push to get into location. a lot of high water, a lot of the rivers coming up and over their banks. >> mike tobin, thanks for showing us this throughout the morning. you'll be reporting there. now that the sun is up, there's a lot to see. >> thanks, mike. her story is terrifying and also life-affirming. beverly allen grabbed her daughter and son, got in the car and tried to outrun the twisters but she got trapped on the road. so, what did she do? she made a split-second decision to stop at a gas station where she hid inside a freezer with 50 strangers. >> joining us now on the phone is beverly. good morning, beverly. >> good morning. >> beverly, tell us why you tried to outrun the tornadoes instead of hunkering down where you were. >> basically, we just thought it was going to be a repeat of may 20th, and thought if we couldn't get underground, the best thing to do was go south.
6:35 am
that's basically what our local news people and weathermen were telling us on this side of town to go south, other side to go north. >> you get in the car, get the family in the car, head out. we're looking at this, bumper-to-bumper traffic. what did you encounter? at what moment did you decide to go into the sinclair gas station? >> we probably left a little too late. and the decision to really try to head for the gas station, which we saw about three-quarters of a mile down the road, is when the wind hit us. it was 60 to 80 miles an hour and blew us side ways into the other lane. we knew we had to get off the road very quickly then. and the sky was just growing darker and darker by the second. and we didn't know it, but what had happened, it had been traveling east but made a hard right turn, meaning south, so it was right behind us. >> so you went to this convenience store. and eventually you and about 100 other folks huddled and prayed and some cried and stayed
6:36 am
together throughout this convenience store, just trying to stay alive. is that right? >> yes. we were there about an hour. and a lot of people were upset. some more than others. some people were crying. a lot of children were crying, very scared. some people brought pets. some were generally laughing and joking and we were generally consoling each other trying to make it through it. >> you were in the freezer while all of this was happening. cue hear the tornado whirling around you? >> no. i came out of the freezer and then i was just in the back of the store. all we could hear was just a lot of wind and hail. >> what were the managers of the store like? >> they were -- oh, they were fantastic. they even offered me water. they were offering people everything, do you need a drink, whatever you need, take it, get. they were just fantastic. very helpful. >> i believe we saw some pictures of your home there today. you managed to get back home and assess some of the damage there.
6:37 am
what does your home look like this morning and how is your family doing? >> it's not as bad as we thought. we have a large tree in the back, a large limb on the front and a couple of shingles missing. >> well, it could have been much worse. we're so happy you survived. you wouldn't have thought you were going to take cover in a convenience store with dozens of strangers but that turned out to work out, thank goodness. beverly, thank you. >> thank you. thank you all very much. >> good luck to you. thank you. oklahoma not the only state that felt the fury of mother nature. brand new video into fox news of the damage left behind in missouri. our live team coverage continues with rick reichmuth. i know the st. louis card analyses game canceled, too? >> that is a northwestern suburb of st. louis, close to the airport, which had a lot of debris. they had to close it down for a little while while they cleaned up the tarmac. i came outside and met cody, from moore, oklahoma. you had your high school
6:38 am
graduation trip planned to new york city but 11, 12 days ago your town was destroyed. what's it like being here now? you saw storms last night go back through moore and you were here. tell me what you felt like last night. >> we were eating dinner last night. we kept getting updates on our phone saying, tornado warnings in moore and oklahoma city. and i was just thinking to myself, not again. i mean, this town has gone through, like, so much already. and it's just devastating to hear that again. i was just praying for people to be okay. >> you just graduated from high school. you said a number of guys on your football team lost their homes? >> yeah, we have 20 football players, not including student body, without homes. >> great news that last night there wasn't more impact in moore but more trauma to go through. >> yeah. have i an ex-girlfriend, her name is allison costello, she was oklahoma city university staying with her grandmother because her mother passed away.
6:39 am
>> in the tornado? >> yes, sir. she passed away and she was twitter messaging me and saying she was just, so, traumatized and scared and she was shaking. >> and i think that's the right thing. the trauma having this come in just a couple of days -- or a week and a half after this, for all those people in oak city. great news it wasn't worse right there but incredible flooding, guys, going to continue to go on as the water has to run somewhere. a lot of lower lying areas in rivers will continue to rise as that water goes up with 7 to 8 inches of rainfall falling overnight. it's not just there. across missouri, illinois, indiana, arkansas flash flooding going on. this week we'll see a major crest on the mississippi river around st. louis from all the water they've seen this week. back inside. >> thanks, rick. meanwhile, there are some other headlines to get to. here is what passengers saw out their window while on a british airways flight. the engine blew off midair and
6:40 am
turns out this was due to a maintenance mistake. an investigation into last week's emergency landing finds the crews did not properly shut the engine door. and is that led to parts flying off. one engine even caught on fire. the plane carried 75 people and forced to land at london's heathrow airport with one engine. imagine an intruder trying to break through your patio door. if you had a gun, would you shoot? one veteran did just that in oregon, firing a warning shot. he's now facing criminal charges. he lost his gun. police say the suspect was not aggressive enough. the former army specialist disagrees. >> everything that the suspect did was aggressive. he tried to bang on my door. he smashed up my patio furniture. he threatened me several times. so, if that's not aggressive, then i don't know what aggressive is, then. >> cory thompson says he reached out to the va and will represent himself in court if he cannot

find an attorney. if you thought your outrage of waste and abuse of the irs couldn't get any worse? think again. your tax dollars used to throw an irs dance party. cost about $1600. this happened a few years ago. the agency says it was a team-building exercise. republican senator rand paul says he's trying to comprehend the slew of scandals surrounding the obama administration. >> i don't even know where to start. it's kind of like old mcdonald's farm of scandals. here a scandal, there a scandal, everywhere a scandal. >> a recent quinnipiac poll shows 76% want a special prosecutor to replace eric holder in these investigations. >> you say they're doing the hustle there, right? >> it looked like the hustle. could have been the electric slide. i just need to hear the music. >> wasn't the macarena? >> no, wasn't that. coming up, latest victims of the sequester, our nation's

sequester, our nations wounded warriors. several have received furlough notices. what does that mean for veterans in need of medical care? >> joining us from washington, d.c. is retired u.s. marine corps gunnery sergeant jesse james duff. good morning, sergeant. >> good morning. how are you? >> i'm fine. thank you. nice to see you. tell us about this. it sounds disturbing on the face that the people who need the services most, our military, will be deprived of the workers, the employees, the people to help them at the walter reed military facility. tell us. >> right. this is very disturbing because we don't have a lot of information that's been released right now so it makes us very suspicious to me. has this been released to get the public all stirred up that military is being affected and the warriors won't receive their medical treatment? i mean, is this like the tsa incident where people were backlogged at airports and not able to get on the flight? is this a covert opes plan to
6:47 am
get us more dependent on the government? in recent years we wonder what the agenda is behind everything, and i'm concerned myself. >> as a concerned veteran, working for concerned veterans of america, have you to identified all the potential problems, falls and shortfalls where the government has let veterans down. this is just adding to the list. >> another long list. for example with the va right now we have a million veteran backlog waiting on medical claims with veterans' administration. so if walter reed starts cutting support for our veterans, it's appalling. we have numerous areasons we can cut before we affect the medical care of our warriors who put their lives and health and everything on the line to defend this country. >> what do you think the issue is, sergeant, do you think it's the obama administration trying to prove that there's pain in terms of the sequester cuts, or is there lack of interest and a lack of caring about veterans as
6:48 am
exposed by the fact that 20,000 veterans are dying each year, waiting for the benefits they never got? >> yes, 20,000 veterans do die a year, waiting on the va to provide their medical claim. people can get more information on our website at concernedveteransforamerica.org. what's going on is curious because we don't know if this is a ploy by the administration to get the public riled up thinking we need more, or is it a simple furlough that's going to cut administrative staff or people that have no -- no involvement with the veterans' medical care. and there are cuts that our government can make to run more efficiently. you know, the missile program is one. $13 billion that has gone down the toilet in the next ten years on a dead program that's never going to go anywhere. >> congress and the administration designed this to be painful. can't get more painful than having to harm our nation's
