3:02 pm

this time yesterday, we were watching these storms start to erupt along the dry line. that's one of the triggers that we need for severe weather. you can see within a matter of an hour and a half, these storms start exploding not only through oklahoma, but up toward kansas and missouri where we have reports of tornadoes as well. we liken this to a pot of boiling water. you got the lid on the top. you take off the lid and the steam just explodes northward. so that's exactly what happened. ef-3 tornado, ef-3 damage southwest of el reno. 19-minute tornado warning before the el reno tornado developed. so that's quite a lot of lead time in terms of tornado warnings. typically it's around 13 minutes lead time when the tornado warning goes out before the tornado actually hits the area. we're also seeing ef-3 damage in st. louis and charles county up in missouri. so ef-3 meaning winds of up to 165 miles per hour blew through those towns and the radar

estimates really within the last 48 hours are incredibly impresssive. oklahoma now has the wettest may on record because of some of the rainfall totals that we've seen. in some cases, four to six inches, really just in a matter of 48 to 72 hours in some cases. we've seen over a foot of rain. that's why we have flash flood watches and warnings for half a dozen states. here in the maroon color, that's where we have flash flood warnings in effect where flooding is occurring or imminent. taking a look at the radar now, we've got more storms moving eastward, sort of along the same areas where we had the flood watches and warnings. it will continue to move very slowly. your severe threat extends from the big bend of texas all the way up to the great lakes. that will continue and then this time tomorrow, we could be talk being a severe weather threat, including hail, including damaging winds and even isolated tornadoes, very heavily populated areas, from dc up towards new york and even bangor, maine.

serious new questions about the attorney general eric holder right now as the calls grow louder for the nation's top law enforcement officer to resign. this as the justice department is vigorously defending his testimony before congress last month when he gave apparently contradictory explanations about his own role in a leak investigation targeting fox news reporter james rosen and now lawmakers on two powerful committees are gearing up for new hearings on all of this next week. molly henneberg is live in washington. good to see you. one of those committees trying to determine if holder told the truth under oath last month. what can you tell us about that? >> rick, attorney general eric holder told a house judiciary committee on may 15 that he did not and would not favor going after reporters in leak investigations. this is what he said. quote: with regard to the potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure of material that is not something that i've ever been involved in, heard of, or would think would be a wise policy.

but a 2010 search warrant into a leak investigation names fox news correspondent james rosen as a co-conspirator and the search warrant is signed by holder. the justice department says it never tried to bring charges against rosen and therefore, quote, the attorney general's testimony concerning the potential prosecution of a member of the press was accurate and consistent with the facts. but two republican members of the house judiciary committee want holder to testify again and clear up how he was involved in this leak investigation. rick? >> molly, how serious could this be? >> political analysts on both sides say this could be trouble for holder. >> it's either ignorance or mal feesance. you have to choose one or the other. neither is a good story for the attorney general. >> if he did not tell the truth in congress, i don't see how the guy survives. >> politically she's talking about. congressman told the hill

more now on one of our top stories this saturday. we're learning disturbing new details concerning the irs, specifically this video just turned over to congressional investigators. it shows irs employees line dancing. it was produced on the taxpayers' dime for a training conference that took place back in 2010 and it's just the tip of the iceberg. inspector general's report is due out at the beginning of this coming week and it's expected to show that the irs spent almost $50 million on conferences over a three-year period, starting in 2010. this as the obama administration is trying to overhaul the agency

amid the scandal concerning the acknowledged targeting of dozens of conservative groups that were seeking tax exempt status and now according to a new poll by quinnipiac university, 76% of registered voters, all registered voters are calling for a special prosecutor to investigate the irs that includes 53% of democrats. so where is all this headed? jehmu green, former president of the women's media center, she's a fox news contributor, brad blakeman is the former deputy assistant to president george w. bush and brad, i want to start with you because you have a personal story to tell about being targeted yourself by the irs when you were the head of an organization. tell us. >> that's right. i ran a 501 c 4 called freedom's watch in 2007 to 2009. after they ceased its operation, we were targeted. i personally was targeted by the irs, as were the donors to freedom's watch. but we suspected that we were politically targeted, but of course, we didn't have the facts
3:20 pm
to back that up until now. when we understand that it was a policy of the irs to go after right of center, political organization and we were caught up in that mess and now it's come to light in the "wall street journal" broke this story today that freedom's watch, me personally and our donor, were targeted by the irs and put through two years of incredible intimidation. and at the end of the day, they got nothing, rick, nothing from me personally. nothing from our donors. it was pure act of intimidation and government leverage over people who were trying to educate the american people on things i guess the obama administration didn't want us involved in. >> hold on. we can't level those charges just yet and there are some investigations that are going on. but jehmu, you hear stories about this, things that happened to brad, thing that happened to heads of other organizations, conservative groups.
3:21 pm
why wouldn't the obama administration get more out ahead of this and maybe appoint its own special prosecutor or special investigator to try to figure out exactly who was leading this charge? >> well, rick, i think they have gotten out ahead of this and they are very focused on holding those accountable who are guilty in this situation. but look, it was wrong when this happened to brad. brad, i hope you've been able to recover. i'm sorry it happened to you, but it was also wrong when the f.b.i. spied on peta and greenpeace and antiwar activists in 2001. so this should not be a partisan witch hunt. >> you're mixing apples with oranges. this scandal goes way beyond -- >> the irs, for us to put pieces in place where this won't ever be able to happen again and to also really clarify the activity between nonpolitical and political groups 'cause the "new york times" reported recently
3:22 pm
how some of these groups were actually engaged in overt political activity. we know that. >> let me let brad respond. >> the president has a famed response of outrage to this crisis. what does he do to the irs officials who are culpable by admission? he either let's them take early retirement, he let's them resign. but he doesn't fire them. as a matter of fact, in a few of the cases, he promotes the very people who are the most culpable in targeting political organizations. if the president wanted to be a leader on this and show that he rejects this kind of targeting, political groups by government, agency that is under his control, he would have fired these people immediately for cause based on their admission and he wouldn't have let them retire. he wouldn't have promoted them certainly. so this famed outrage by the president is hollow at best. we need a special prosecutor to

3:24 pm
but if republicans, and what i'm hearing from brad is it's just really trying to make that connection to the white house, if that is their -- >> look, i'm not making -- i'm not stretch ago connection to the white house. i will tell you as a matter of fact, i was in charge of president george w. bush's schedule. and we didn't have the irs coming to the white house every third day. the fact of the matter is, the irs commissioner visited more than most cabinet members combined. there is no reason when you have a telephone, when you have e-mail, when you have video conferencing, when the guy is in washington to have him come down to the white house unless you don't want a paper trail and you're giving him orders that you're not going to want to see on paper, or you don't want recorded. the fact of the matter is, if the president wanted to get this behind him, release the records other than the waiving of people in the white house. who did he meet with? how long did he meet with? what was the subject matter? the fact that the president hasn't done it and the white house hasn't done it makes me believe they're trying to hide something. >> we're going to have to leave it there. obviously not the last word on this.

anybody believe that you've done a good job. and for the life of me, art, i don't know why the white house doesn't get that. no matter what eric holder does, no matter how tough he is on himself, it's not going to be credible. and the right thing to do and the political thing to do would be to bring in somebody independent, a guy like james comey, there must be more than one -- and have that person investigate the justice department policies. not the guy who approved the warrant. >> arthel: in the meantime, he is in charge of this investigation and you know that mr. holder had a request to keep meetings of the news organizations off the record. i want to get your take on that and also speaking of news organizations, do you believe that mr. holder signed off on the rosen investigation because he doesn't like fox news? >> no. i actually don't believe that. i mean, i really think -- there was another investigation of the ap. i really think that there is a

hard, delicate balance to be drawn between the first amendment, which i'm a staunch supporter of, and national security concerns. and i think eric holder didn't do the right thing in signing that warrant. but i think he was motivated, as other administrations have been in the past, by concerns with very sensitive national security leaks. but the way to address the situation, art, as you point out, is not to invite the news organizations in for an off the record conversation. i mean, we're at the point with this one where everything has got to be on the record and you really do need an independent person who takes a second look and reports to the congress and to the people and to the justice department on how we should deal with these hard issues that come up. >> arthel: yeah. susan, let me pop a full screen of a poll recently taken here. rasmussen poll. the question is, should eric holder resign? you've got 42% of those saying he should resign and 24% say they disagree with that.
3:46 pm
and 34% are just not sure. so i ask you, what do you think? do you think mr. holder should resign? do you think that there should be a thorough investigation into department of justice policy? >> i don't know if he needs to resign or not. if they continue down the path they're on, with him saying i'm going to investigate myself and i'm happy to talk to you off the record, his days will be numbered. and ironically, the only way eric holder i think can save himself and save his credibility and protect himself is by giving up some power right now and having somebody else come in, a nice, smart republican come in and say, you know what? maybe they did the wrong thing in the james rosen case. i think they did. but we do have these hard issues to grapple with when there are serious and sensitive national security leaks and we got to find a way to draw that balance. i remember sitting here and having folks say to me, the "new york times" was guilty of being traitors for wikileaks.
3:47 pm
i didn't think that was true, but it reflected the same concerns. so eric can save himself, mr. holder, but only if he steps out of the way right now. >> arthel: susan, i have to leave it there. thank you very much and i want to remind -- good to see you. i want to remind everybody that you can read susan susan's colun every wednesday and friday. take it outside to rick now. >> rick: i found my new car. when we come back, the hottest convertibles from "consumer reports." don't go away [ male announcer ] progress isn't about where you've been. ♪ it's about where you're going. the new ram 1500. best-in-class 25 mpg. ♪ north american truck of the year. ♪ the truck of tas. better residual value than ford and chevy. it's the fastest-growing truck brand in america. guts. glory.
