>> the press might ask why didn't you catch the tsarnaev's and the underwear bomber if we have this? >> the big picture there was george bush and barack obama morphed together and that hurts. >> on friday, i think it was on thursday, they wrote this piece called president obama's dragnet and they wrote the administration has lost all credibility. he is proving that the executive will use any power that it is given and likely to abuse it. that is why the patriot act enacted in the heat of fear -- well then the times went back and softened that first line.

it originally read last all credibility and then they changed it to on this issue. how did that happen, rick? >> let me predict that we will find out several years from now that somebody at the white house called up andy at the "new york times" and complained and they changed it. look, the irony here is that the arguments for and against the government snooping, they haven't changed since bush was very clear. what has changed is the media coverage. obama has done a 180 and the media hasn't noticed that they are either on his side or acting now like the snooping was a good idea. we were talking about this on friday on happening now. the president obama's line seems

to be trust us. >> that is the problem. there is no well of credibility left given the progression of scandals that we have had and now this. this one has these two programs and they are often conflated by the media. at least two prominent members on the hill have defended these programs. i think now that this leak occurred and oh boy is there going to be another leak into this one and other prism this is

the government in which private data was handed out apparently to people for not some fairly -- purposes apparently and these are the folks we are supposed to trust. and in his press conference i think he made a mistake in arguing trust us, these are professionals, they have no interest in your personal information. i think the president should say i understand your concerns and we are taking the necessary steps to make sure it is protected. on the topic of security he named susan rice as his new

national security advisor and now fox news chief white house correspondent ed henry asked jay carney about her decision. you described her as one of the most qualified foreign policy in the country. if that is the case, how did she get the information on benghazi? >> i welcome the opportunity to clear up the misrepresenting of the facts. you have seen the testimony and the documents themselves that demonstrate that the central contested point that ambassador rice made on those sunday shows was drafted in the first instance and in every instance there after by the cia. >> then why do various

intelligence officials say they almost immediately new that this was a terrorist situation. >> so you are suggesting that a senior member of the security team should disagree with the assessments of the intelligence community. >> no, actually the -- >> general petraeus said that cia director didn't think they were worth anything. >> all right cal what about her appointment has the media questioned it at all? >> in some parts casey mcfar land wrote that she enters the job with zero credibility with the media. but there have been more liberal remarks on this. the washington post eugene

a bureaucracy. they are not focusing on the fact that mark childress worked to contain it and then we found out dennis mcdonnough knew that conservatives were being targeted. i don't understand why they didn't say anything. maybe they told him stay away from this. but there are questions that the media are not focused on here. >> in private business the last few years have been pretty rough. they have cut back on conferences and employee perks. why not the ifrs? >> so far, a couple of years ago frankly as a 33 year resident of washington i'm sure if you went to any federal agency you would

find the same kind of pattern of high living. but the spending is one thing. the kind of revelations are coming out of how they operated. peggy noonan had a column about how the national relationship of marriage was taken apart by the irs and detailed it closely. there was a misfired e-mail that got to washington but it alertd the folks in washington. why is nobody i mean are they holding the irs feet to the fire over that? >> well not exactly. some of the editorials and the columns i've been reading. more focused on warning the republicans not to over reach on this. i've been in washington more

than jim has. i don't recall democrats not trying to over reach. i thought the clip we didn't run which said, this is not your money and that is how they get away with it. they are spending other people's money. what about the claim that republicans are over reaching here? >> the one i made in one of my columns actually. i think it is a valid thing to say. we remember how the republicans over played their hand with bill clinton impeachment process. they managed to end up being less popular with someone who has had an affair. they have a history of doing this. some of the things that darryl issa referring to them as a paid liar doesn't help their case. >> i don't remember the head of

you know oversight committee calling the white house press secretary names. >> the democrats in the 80s were saying we are going to impeach him over iran contra. >> that was a major scandal a bigger deal. >> and my gosh. that is in sane. it was illegal. they were breaking the law. illegal according to one of the five interpretations of the amendment. >> so it is okay to secretly sell arms. >> well i'm sorry john. the amendment congressman from massachusetts tried to prevent this. there were five interpretations of it. >> all right we are going to have to leave that there. next on "news watch" who is

violated his contract with the u.s. government and put a great many individuals at risk and he did disclose some things that were outrageous. >> jon: what is all that public support that put the campaign together? >> in the wake of the james rosen news, you have to accept assange's pointed and he made a point, he has an argument here. he is embedded co-conspirator in eric holder's mind, we have to look at any leak at all. we have to look at assange and glen greenwald on these issues. >> jon: what do you say to some of the celebrities out there in california with all kinds of support to bradley manning? >> i wouldn't call hollywood is supporting bradley manning. it's a combination of phil donahue and 9/11 truthers.

you throw in a couple of "b" actors, it's the left wing kooks that are coming out in his defense. >> i will call myself left wing kook. on the wikileaks side, you don't want them deciding who is a news outlet. >> but stir sentence, he really risks americans -- bradley manning, leaking all these he risks u.s. servicemen lives. >> he is a whistleblower. she whistleblower and there was information that we don't have a transparent government. if we had a transparent government they were telling us things. >> jon: he didn't go through each of those individually. he did a mass dump of documents. >> we don't have a government of transparency. he wouldn't have to do this. >> i wanted to credit "b"

with all the scandals surrounding the obama white house we wanted to hear from one of our favorite artists what makes them so effective. >> the best way to get your message out there, i believe, is through humor. in a cartoon can go places that maybe an op-ed or news article can't. you can say a lot in just one image that takes a thousand words as they say. the scandals, it opens up a lot of opportunities for not only cartoonists but many prominent conservatives to expose this administration for what it really is. for me, it's just sticking with my own values, my own perspective on things. you have a little square there you have to fill up. you want to make a strong as point as possible and have a little bit of humor
