would be bad, too. >> nor will i ever be asked. there, i don't have to worry about it. >> much more on that coming up with the show. plus reading headlines. >> let me do that now. new overnight ex-patriots player and alleged murderer aaron hernandez was questioned in a 2007 shooting. he was a student at the university of florida. this happened after two people were shot outside a nightclub. his name came up. no arrests were made. hernandez in jail facing first degree murder charges in the death of his friend. the fight over gay marriage in california isn't over. overnight opponents filed an emergency motion asking the supreme court to step in and immediately stop same sex weddings in that state. the move comes less than 24 hours after the state started issuing marriage licenses to same sex kuchls the group's alliance defending freedom said

the u.s. supreme court of appeals unfairly allowed gay marriage to resume. we have a live look now at the streets of cairo, egypt, where violent protests are expected to swell today. millions are demanding the president give up power. this could be the largest since 2011 when thousands passed tahrir square to removed hosni mubarak, this after the american college student killed there on friday, 21-year-old had reportedly only been in egypt a few weeks. he was stabbed to death by a protester while watching a demonstration. his family said he was there to teach english to children. and reeva steenkamp, the model killed allegedly by oscar pistorius pro their silence. they cannot pay their bills. the two had been accused of

going after blood money in their daughter's death. reeva was helping them financially before she died. they are due in court in august. boy, i'm telling you, i got a note last night from my son-in-law who lives near the sacramento area. he sent me the five-day forecast for northern california. 110 degrees. >> for northern california. >> 110 degrees. >> very relaxes time. tracking all the crazy severe weather out west. record breaking in las vegas. >> record breaking for the day. got to 115, all-time high is 117. maybe flirting with that today. right in that area. phoenix hit 119, the third highest temperature ever, 122 is their highest. three hours early in needles, california, and it's 100 degrees. if you're ready to go to bed on the street, 95 degrees, 97 in

phoenix. the heat not going away at nighttime and that's part of the problem. take a look at the video out of vegas. this became deadly. there was one elderly man who passed away in his home, didn't have air conditioning. there were a number of people who had to be rescued from a concert, treated for heat related illnesses. when you're outside you can't be in the heat long. it doesn't take long before you end up with heat stroke. that proves fatal. it happens very often in these heat waves. a dangerous day. folks need to take a lot of precaution. stay inside if you can at all, temps in vegas getting to 116, 124 in lake havasu, 116, death valley 128. tomorrow still remaining very, very warm across this area. this is going to build, this high pressure causing this is going to slowly drift to the north. keep moving into places like sacramento and pacific northwest.

states, send him here. he didn't have to rise to that level, send in drones or do anything crazy right now. turns out there have been some phone conversations taking place behind the scenes. >> we learned on friday vice president biden actually did call the president of ecuador. so it didn't rise to the level of the president but it did almost. it was the vice president making a personal plea. it was very interesting. the tone was different than we've heard before. they have both described it as cordial and friendly. in fact, the president from ecuador said he respected the tone and had a much more productive conversation than he feels he would have had from the senators from the u.s. railing against ecuador. >> we can call anything. did we call hong kong, russia, ecuador. is anybody afraid of the units anymore? >> when joe biden gives you a call. oh biden is on the phone.

here is his response to joe bind, the moment he arrives, if he arrives, the first thing we're going to ask the opinion of the united states, as we did in the assange case with england, but the decision is ours to make. >> much more conciliatory tone. when we heard what was happening friday, over the weekend, they were thumbing their nose at the united states with the statement he made a fiery speech in ecuador and said, we don't need the money from the united states. they can't threaten us. we're doing to do whatever we want to do. sounds like vice president biden calling did help relations there. who knows what's going to happen. as you point out, mike, hong kong was not cowed by anything we wanted. russia doesn't seem to be interested in what the u.s. wants. snowden is still, as far as we know, hold up in the moscow airport. >> speaking of him, he calls himself a patriot. now he says if i'm because the by anybody, i'm going to pill the beans and anything i have in

my trove of information, i'll give up the rest of it. >> he's calling it an insurance policy. if anything happens to me, i'm going to release this information. we know the stuff he's already released about the nsa's secret surveillance program. turns out his laptop still may be over in hong kong. he may be traveling with that thumb drive that has an enormous amount of files on it. these guys, it's not like that's the only bit of information they have, the 1950s. give us that tape. that's the only copy of it. if he's caught, he probably has a back-up plan, same thing with julian assange. >> he does have a back-up plan. he says he planted information around the globe with friends and allies, this is his plan, if he's killed or imprisoned, they would -- there's some sort of trigger they would release this treasure trove of information. what could it be?

>> he has a very high opinion of himself. >> with a flip of the switch he can bring down western civilization. >> he refers to himself in the third person. if anything happens to snowden, mark my words, if anything happens to snowden, he'll be released. like a seinfeld episode. jimmy is angry. >> he's getting hot under the collar. >> jimmy has secrets. meanwhile, susan rice, the soon to be national security adviser this weekend, susan rice, national security adviser to president obama was asked in an interview on the hill, said basically the nsa scandal has not weakened president obama. she goes on to say, i think the united states of america is and will remain the most powerful, influential country in the world, the largest economy, military, network of alliances, values that are universally respected. she says that's just bunk, those are her words, bunk, that edward snowden has hurt us in any way.

>> the problem with susan rice, of course, was pointed out when the president wanted to appoint her to a higher position, it's hard to take some of what she said seriously after she was the stooge for the administration on those sunday shows with benghazi. you now have the impression of her that she parrots talking points. >> that will follow her for years. >> it's unfortunate for her but that is the impression. >> ask a question, gitmo, they have a gym. when the detainees realized the gym equipment, barbells, had a made in america, they refused to use the equipment and demanded they had equipment flown in from a muslim country, that was manufactured in a muslim country. and apparently we said, okay, and got rid of the american equipment. >> that's not all. the list goes on and on. americans said -- first of all, the idea of them having a

beautiful -- they have a lavish, nice gym there. they have a watercooler, probably nice beach music on top to work out to, keep it going. the fact they have this really nice gym to begin with, then they have all these other amenities, we don't want that because it's made in usa, we want it flown in from a muslim country. >> for whatever reason we acquiesced. this is exhibit a of the problems with gitmo. all these prisoners are held here. they are not adjudicated, held indefinitely. that is a problem for many in the united states, including our constitution. we then acquiesce to our demands because we feel guilty about this. >> another demand, they wanted their own library. apparently there's this 10,000 pook library. did you know you couldn't have a u.s. librarian, so they had to fly in a muslim librarian because the muslim person can only touch the book. >> i love this.

they each get a copy of the koran. they have to get a hammock so it doesn't touch the ground. they attach a hammock in their cell. >> special food. standard issue, prayer beads, a rug, a quran. the soccer field, $50,000 state-of-the-art if there is such a thing soccer field. watch their choice of videos, television, and newly approved medical units for detainees. we're spending a lot of money for gitmo for something the president promised was going to close in his first term. >> that's the bottom line. this was supposed to close in the first week. the president said this was doing to happen. >> i don't think it was on that list, they don't want to see an american flag in their eyesight at gitmo, so we move the flags out of their view.

how is it going to do it? starting today they are cutting unemployment benefits for those who file new claims. they are coming the first state in the country disqualified. our next guest said unemployment benefits are kruld for keeping able-bodied workers sidelined. here is john. >> hey. >> lets backpedal. why did north carolina disqualify itself from the federal money coming to them? >> once you accept that federal money you are then on the hook to pay it back, the federal government has a role on how you manage things in your state, anti-federalism. this is good news for the north carolinians. they have the fifth worst unemployment rate in the country. opting out of this federal program i would argue will mean soon they will have one of the best unemployments nationwide. >> how is that going to work?

if they have no job and the benefits will only last from flee to five months, not 99 weeks, not a year, at five months they are-of- they are cut off, then what happens to these people. >> basic economics. head hunters say they get the most visitors looking for jobs precisely when they run out. this isn't to minimize the pain of unemployment or losing a job, but one barrier to people finding jobs is payment for thought having one to begin with. so if there's a reduction in how long you're paid, people will adjust their wage demands to the new market realities and be far more likely to find work. >> what one day after five months or one month or one year they still can't find a job? what happens to that person? >> people have savings, they go out to friends.

historically we haven't always had unemployment but there have been ways people survive without it. unemployment, as painful as it is, isn't natural. kind of like a convenience store, if they are having trouble moving items they reduce items such that they can get customers to come in at new prices. labor is no different. it's a cost. if unemployment is high, one way to get it down, potential employees to lower their demands to existing realities. this isn't to say you'll get the exact job you want at the exact pay you want. the best to high pay and worker responsibility is to accept what's out there on the way to higher pay. >> a fascinating experiment that north carolina is the first in the state to do. i'd love to hear from people in north carolina. you can find me on twit @alisyn camerota. thanks very much. >> thanks for having me. >> what was it like living through the biggest civil war

history channel is commemorating biggest battles of the war between the states. take a look. >> two years after the start of the civil war, the confederate army is invading the north. one mile west of gettysburg, rebel reconnaissance groups encounter union resistance. the fight escalates out of control. >> all this is going to be good.

it's civil war week. it kicks off today. dr. o'connell, chief historian is with us now. thank you for being with us. i'm so glad you're doing this. so many people in this country have forgotten about the civil war or didn't learn about it. clayton and i are pennsylvania guys here. we know all about gettysburg and all that. i'll tell you this, i know you're going to concentrate a little on vicksburg and people forget about that. >> they do. vicksburg gets overlooked by people all over the country, not just you guys. i'm from pennsylvania. gettysburg has always been the focus. vicksburg is a major battle, happens the same time as gettysburg. grant seized vicksburg, like a fortress overlooking the mississippi. it's 40 days long where he's trying to take control of the confederate rats. it's a very important battle for control of the whole mississippi valley and really the west in the american connection between confederate armies on one side and across the mississippi.

helicopters. >> you forgot about that, it's a secret. >> lets go back to gettysburg. why was that so important that the confederate army comes up into the north? >> okay. generally it's proving to the world that the confederate rats are going to win this war. he goes in to pennsylvania and as big victory he can head up to harrisburg, take over that capital. anything is possible. he's also looking for support from britain and france. so he's trying to say, look, i'm going to win this. but by having people come together in gettysburg, the two armies meet, gettysburg is crossroads, 10 different roads coming together right there in this old market town. because of the important union victory, it turns the war around and ultimately the union army wins. >> it's amazing watching this footage here. for people who have never been on gettysburg, stand on that ground, devil's den, you can see

behavior outside of work time. a, then lie about it. b, who are you to say what you can do inside the privacy of your own home. >> certain employers are saying, if you're obese, health care costs are higher. it costs the group at large more money because you're not taking care of your health. therefore, we don't have to hire you. you don't meet a certain level, set of criteria. >> apparently there's a test, blood test. that nicotine they find in your system. you smoke. >> it's like a drug test, and they are doing it for nicotine. it's legal. you can still smoke but not if you want to be employed. this is a huge health care system, not just one hospital. children's hospital in philadelphia, the best in the or an. lets say you have diabetes, who is not to say that's raising health care for other people. >> can't you still be a very talented doctor or nurse and smoke. >> of course. lots of doctors and nurses smoke. >> like you said, you drive back behind a hospital and they are all out there in their scrubs.

associate director of the center for educational freedom at the caddo institute. is this overreach now? >> it is. it epitomizes the nanny state. states said we'll take federal money for subsidized lunches. over time they have to be more and more nutritious. now they say if you want the money, you have to change what's in the vending machine. the problem is kids aren't eating healthy oceans. they say, we're like your parents, you listen to us. >> i would imagine most kids get most of their calories a day outside the home, wouldn't you think? >> quite possibly. there are breakfast programs in school, lunch programs and maybe they get dinner somewhere else, breakfast somewhere else. what we are likely to see is they are going to supplement a lot of the food they are supposed to be getting in school with food they want to eat,

rather than food they end up throwing away because they don't like it. >> i went to visit my kids school. i was kind of upset they were feeding them pizza and fatty foods for lunch. i want healthier food at the school. if this program is implemented all over the country, it's going to cost us a lot of money. >> it's costing a lot of money with free and reduced priced lunch program. they have changed nutrition requirements over the last few years, very expensive. what we're seeing is kids aren't eating this. the way people should get food tailored to their needs and fit the kids, you have to have school choice and freedom. one of the things they are sold on or options and nutritious. there has to be competition, not dictate, which ends up in people going outside for food, which still isn't healthy. >> in philly they looked at dumpsters, they saw a lot of

was that fun? >> it was fun. i'm so happy to see you. >> thank you very much. we're happy to see you. all right. let's take a look at the weather maps. a couple things going on. we have a big heat story out across parts of the west. and we have kind of a humidity story across the east. we're going to see pretty significant rainfall again across areas that have just been saturated throughout the month of june. over the next couple days you see those yellows, reds and oranges, those are areas between two and six inches of rain. and in across areas of the northeast where we've seen very significant flooding this week in upstate new york, there's going to be more rain here. kind of having a stalled-out front right across areas of the northeast. so people in the east thinking this doesn't really seem like typical weather, that front has stalled out. it's to the east side. it's just more humid. behind it is it's not as humid. it's not that it's necessarily cooler. it's just not as humid. but along that area where there's humidity, we'll continue to see showers fire. and that's going to be the case all the way at least through the fourth of july. so no big changes in our weather pattern. across areas of texas, some very

beneficial and much needed rain that we saw yesterday. we'll see a little bit more today. but out across the west, i think the story is just the heat. it's dry. we're starting to see some of those thunderstorms fire up across the four corners. that's sparking a few more fires. but in general, we just have the heat warnings. excessive heat warnings all across areas of the southwest. another hot day. yesterday, phoenix, guys, 119 degrees. it's the third highest temperature they've ever seen in phoenix. today a big cooldown to about 116. how's that? >> at least it cooled off a little bit. >> chilly. thanks so much for that update, rick. let's tell you what's been happening overnight. police confirming that expatriate and alleged murderer aaron hernandez was questioned in a 2007 shooting. this happened after two people were shot outside of a gainesville, florida, nightclub. hernandez was a student at the university of florida at the time, and his name came up as being close by the crime scene along with several other u of f players. no arrests were ever made.

hernandez is in jail facing first-degree murder charges in the death of his friend, oden lloyd. also new overnight, gay marriage opponents filed an the supreme court to step in and immediately stop same-sex weddings in california. the move comes less than 24 hours after the state started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. the group called alliance defending freedom says the ninth u.s. circuit court of appeals acted prematurely and unfairly by allowing gay marriage to resume in that state. let's take a live look now atta re at tahrir square in egypt. people are demanding the islamist president give up power just one year after his inauguration. it could be the largest demonstration since 2011 when thousands packed the square to remove then president hosni mubarak. this while more details emerge about the student -- the american college student killed there on friday, 21-year-old

andrew procter had reportedly only been in egypt a few weeks. he was stabbed to death by a protester while watching the demonstrations. his family said he was there to teach english to children. and a wrongly convicted chicago man who spent nearly two decades behind bars is waking up a free man at home this morning. daniel teller was just 19 years old when he was convicted of double murder and sentenced to life in prison. with the help of northwestern university's center for wrongful convictions, it was proven that taylor was actually in police custody at the time of the crime, and that conviction was thrown out. >> at this moment, i don't have the vocabulary that would give the full impact on how i feel. when i last got locked up, brick phones and beepers were popular. >> wow. taylor says he plans to attend northwestern university and become a youth counselor for at-risk counselor and he says he'll also seek rest taitutiore.

thank you. let's bring in john roberts, he is hosting "fox news sunday" today. >> hey, john. >> great to see you this morning. >> good morning, y'all. how are you? >> we are great. let's dive into some of the topics we've been following and get your perspective there in washington. specifically joe biden. we're learning he picked up the phone and made a phone call to the ecuadorian president down there when we had heard from president obama that we didn't need to pick up the phone. we don't need to do anything. we don't need to call vladimir putin about edward snowden. what has been the response from the ecuadorian government and from republicans in d.c.? >> yeah, well, the response from ecuador has not been good. you remember the president made big headlines in senegal during that press conference when he said, i'm not going to call president putin. i'm not going to call president xi. i'm not going to scramble jets for a 29-year-old hacker. well, you can see why the president might not want to call putin nor xi because he doesn't want to get rebuffed at such a high level. that might be a little embarrassing for the president

of the united states. so what happens? the vice president calls rafael correia of ecuador. while correia didn't say no exactly, he also didn't say yes. and then, of course, he goes on national television to talk about the whole thing and air his grievances against the united states and talk about these two fugitive bankers that are apparently in miami that the u.s. courts refuse to extradite, and he gains an awful lot of points with the local audience there. and then nationally, internationally, he's seen as rebuffing the united states. so if you can't even get ecuador to give you an assurance that they're not going to offer this guy asylum, how much influence do you really have these days? >> so let's talk about that, about the scandals in washington that have come out in the past month and a half and how it's affecting the administration's reputation, and particularly with independents, that all-important voting bloc. here's a fox news poll that shows that the approval rating among independents support has dropped. now in june of 2013, it is at 31% from an all-time high of

66%. >> and 61% of independents disapprove of the way that the president is handling his job. and in another recent poll, 53% of independents say they don't believe the president when he says he didn't know about what was going on at the irs, that he learned about it from the media. now it's not going to have too much of an impact on this president because he doesn't have to run for re-election. but where it could have impact is november of next year during those all-important midterm elections when republicans definitely want to hold on to the house, they'll want to try to make some inroads in the senate. and very often the president has coattails in his party. and if independents are not feeling good about the president, they might not be feeling good about the democratic party, and that could bode well for republicans a year from now. >> that's a great point, john, because i was thinking about 1998. remember republicans said we're going to run against bill clinton, 1998, it was the height of the impeachment scandal, of course, and they lost. they got her hats handed to them, did republicans. they tried to run against clint.

clinton. it turns out he was popular despite the scandals. will republicans repeat that mistake and try to run against president obama in the midterms? >> you know, i don't think they're going to run against president obama, but definitely what happens by keeping these scandals alive is it keeps him off balance. it doesn't allow him any victories that the democrats can tout to the public. i think the big thing to watch for with the republicans, particularly when you look at the troubles that they have with hispanic voters is what they do on immigration. i don't think anybody in the republican party believes that if you pass a comprehensive immigration bill, suddenly hispanics will say where have you been all my life? but -- and lindsey graham told this to me -- and i think it was a very astute observation on his part -- he said if you try to talk to somebody and you don't think that you like them and they don't think that you relate to their issues and what's important to them, they're likely not to listen to anything else you have to say. so i think what happens in the house in this immigration issue over the next few weeks is going

to be very important to republican fortunes, not just in 2014, but particularly in 2016 when you look at mitt romney getting 27% of the hispanic vote compared to who% for president bush. you don't want the trend going in that direction. >> speaking of immigration, who's on today? i see you have senator mccain and senator schumer. >> we're going to actually barricade the doors to the studio and see how long we can stay on the air because we have got so much to talk about. we've got senator john mccain in jerusalem talking to us exclusively today as well as senator charles schumer. of course, both of them members of the gang of eight. we'll be talking immigration. we'll also talk about egypt, arming syrian rebels, the nsa, and this issue with general james cartwright which doesn't seem to have made much news in the past couple of days, which is very puzzling to me because you have the former number two at the pentagon now being targeted as the source of the leak of the stuxnet virus. we'll also talk with republicans

terms of the price. what the government accountability office and have you respond to that. here is report that they just released last week on dcgs. he says the system requires 80 hours of basic training and can be difficult to operate because there are multiple components and data screens to manipulate. users also voice concerns that the performance was unreliable and different system for use in the field impeded the flow of intelligence information, total estimated cost of all the service system is more than $10.6 billion. basically they are saying, the people they talked to it doesn't work well in the field. what is your experience in this? >> i have used it in afghanistan. it worked for me. i have received national level intelligence all the way down to to battalion

level that shows us high value individuals and has resulted lives being saved. it helped me paint a big picture for my commanders on what is happening so they can make appropriate decisions. for me it has worked. as for the training part it does require training as for any system. it's going to have to go through training so you know how to use it. i've been through a total of 240 hours of training with dcgs and my soldiers have been through training as well. we never experienced massive issues. >> alisyn: since we did the story two weeks ago we have received letters from soldiers who have always expressed concern and say it doesn't work for them, as well. here is one letter from a soldier that asked him to protect his identity. i have been deployed in afghanistan as an analyst for seven months. the bottom line, core
