happy 4th, everybody. yeah. that is what it's come to for the hoff. an iced coffee. hey,t lea >> that's your last call. have a great 4th. good night. this is a pox news alert. it's 5:00 in new york city. 11:00 p.m. eastern in egypt where we're watching history unfold once again. tonight the country's military has ousted president morsi. morsi a leader elected by the people has been told that he is no longer in power and celebrations have been going on for hours. he's being replaced temporarily with the chief justice of the constitutional state. take a listen to the chief of the army addressing the country earlier. >> translator: this road map has included stop working with the constitution. the head of the constitution,

11:02 pm
heated on both sides. but particularly on the pro morsi supporters who vowed to die if presidefor president mor islam. this is the scene in egypt. it is a celebration behind me in tahrir square, but anger and frustration outside where the pro morsi supporters live. >> so the way we understand it, there could be upwards of a million or more people in tahrir square who are the anti-morsi group. the pro morsi group is surrounded by military, is that right? >> reporter: that's what we understand. just a few minutes after the military deadline, the ultimatum was passed. we started getting reports that the military was moving through, vehicles into the pro morsi area. they are on lockdown. but we're getting reports that they are thousand beginning to clash with the military and how long the military can keep them locked up and keep them under
11:03 pm
control, that's a big question. it's unlikely that they can keep them under control for he days on end. at some point the muslim brotherhood which is a you powerful organization here in yes gipt, they will be heard. and they are angry. president morsi has released a statement saying he is still president, he doesn't accept the military coup. he's asking the military to respect the democratic rule in this country. he was elected democratically. the parliament was democratically elected. and the constitution was approved with two-thirds of the vote. the muslim brotherhood is angry and they will be third from here in the next few days or so. >> connor, this is andrea. as i understand it, there are really three sort of facts. if you could describe the protesters in tahrir square. is it the nonislamists on the other and the pro more city, the islamists, is that out three secretats break down?
11:04 pm
oppositi opposition, they agreed they wanted morsi to go. but among them, you have christian, muslims who are not particularly thrilled with the muslim brotherhood, you also have secular egyptians who didn't like the muslim brotherhood. you also have the military which has had a large stake in the economy here in running the country. so just in the opposition, it's very fractured. and you have the muslim brotherhood. there is a pragmatic wing. some don't think they're islamist enough. they're good at holding protests, but not very good at unifying. muslim brotherhood is still the strongest group here and could easily win the next elections. >> connor, this is bob.
11:05 pm
i understand that when the military announced the road map for peace, that it was developed by a coptic christian. that's amazing to me given the fact the muslim brotherhood has been killing people and the coptic christians put the road map down, don't you find that rather shocking? >> reporter: the coptic christian community is a powerful community here in egypt. they're a large community. people don't think of them here, but they are a large powerful and sometimes wealthy community here. they have had a lot to say particular li on the opposition. the christian community has had problems with the muz wlim brotherhood.kly li on the opposition. the christian community has had problems with the muz wlim brotherhood.the christian commu problems with the muz wlim brotherhood. 200,000 or so have left in the last year or so, so they have felt persecuted and have tried to work with opposition leaders. one thing that should be said, there is a feeling here that
11:06 pm
this was a military plan the last sort of two week or so, but it was endorsed by very different group whether they be muslim groups that don't support the muslim brotherhood or the coptic christians or even secular kree giegyptians. they had one goal, removing morsi. what happens next is a big question. >> okay. connor, thank you very much. fox news national security correspondent jennifer griffin joins us from the pentagon. >> how likely do they feel they will be able to contain and control the opposition here some because as connor stated, it seems that the muslim brotherhood is best poised to take over the next position of power like you said regain the same seat. >> it's interesting. i don't think anyone knows at this point. what i can tell you you is from my seat here at the pentagon and talking to officials here, is there a generally a feeling that the military, the egyptian
11:07 pm
military, is a strong institution, it is still a credible institution. the u.s. embassy itself is still relying on to protect its periphery as is standard overseas. and there was no movement of marines to any -- any talk of moving marines in to egypt because of concern about u.s. sirte zens at the embassy there. so there is still a belief right now in the pentagon, this washington, that the egyptian military has things under control. they're watching it very carefully. and in fact as we're speaking over at the white house, the president is meeting with his national security team. we know that defense secretary chuck hagel arrived just a few minutes ago. the president was in the oval office when the general made the announcement that the coup had taken place and president morsi was no longer president. he was there. he was watching. we understand there are reports that the director of the cia and
11:08 pm
joint chiefs are meeting with the president. because the president, president obama, is now in an awkward position. what does he say in the wake of this militarily engineered coup. what does the white house say at this point. for the last two, three days, the white house state department and pentagon has been very careful not to put out any statements to look as though they engineered this coup in any way. >> jennifer, i know it's too soon to like make any projections about what's going on here, but is there something encouraging here about the fact that perhaps the importance of the economy is being put before extreme ic extremism, the fact that it's the muslim brotherhood that last lost? >> i think the most significant thing we've seen is that the first opposition leader to stand up and speak, the one hand picked opposition leader to speak after the general made the
11:09 pm
announcement was the head of the iaei. he is generally accepted as the most secretary cause lar and waern oriented leader. he is somebody who the west would be comfortable dealing with. and really if you you look at the root of the reason that these 30 million prus people are in the streets in egypt, it is not only about president morsi and the muslim brother hood, but it's about the economy. it's the economy, stupid. and that is the bottom line in egypt as it is in most countries. and the fact that the military chose to put mohammed out there to speak shows they want to get the economy on track. it's also very important to point out that the arm itself did not put a general in charge. so it's really arguable that this was a military coup. >> we've gotten word that there was some sort of warning for all nonessential american personnel to leave. you can expand on that a bit?
11:10 pm
>> well, i've been told unless this came in just the last few minutes, we do know patrick kennedy in the last few days had issued -- had allowed for evacuations of personnel from the embassy. it was not what is known as a noncombatant evacuation. that may have changed in the last few minutes. but when i spoke to pentagon officials just a few hours ago, there had not been a decision taken as of kret by the state department that they were going it evacuate what's known as a neo would require marines to be flown in and they would have to secure the airport and send in contract planes and start getting americans out of egypt. it's not clear at this point whether that decision has been taken. >> jennifer, any indication on elections? i know elections were scheduled for a couple of years from now.
11:11 pm
but the last people we saw people storm to tahrir square, they were voting for democracy. and they were complaining with the economy now two years later, we find ourselves looking at them complaining about the economy which is worse under morsi. so what do you think the military is going to do, schedule advanced elections? and again, isn't the muslim brotherhood just going to rise again? they control the mosques, the unions. some are even in the egyptian military. what do you think? >> certainly the muslim brotherhood is still the most organized organization and political party in egypt. so unless they are banned from participating, and at this point they have not been, then they will participate in upcoming elections. the question is when will those elections be held. the army, the general, the defense chief who made the announcement that president morsi was going to be removed, he did not say when those elections would take place. will they take place in 90 days, in a year? it's not clear.
11:12 pm
it's significant that they chose the head of the constitutional court and a group of technocrats to run the country in the interim. clearly they will have to most likely rewrite the constitution because the constitution under morsi was looking like it was keeping the muslim brotherhood in power. so they will have to do some institution building before they call those elections. >> very good. thank you very much. joining us how is former u.s. amount bass door for the u.n. mr. bolten. >> hey, john. egypt has had a long history in the military coups if you will. there was a lot of talk about the amount of foreign aid that we were giving egypt because the muslim brotherhood had taken over. when in fact most of that money was going to the military. so it turns out the military has always been more favorable towards the united states than obviously the brotherhood. so don't you think that that military support probably worked its way -- is a good thing for the united states? >> absolutely.
11:13 pm
i said that right rooalong. i would have suspended military aid in the last weeks because of what morsi was doing to send a signal that his behavior wasn't acceptable and to send a signal to the military that they needed to excerpt themselves. the obama administration chose not to do that and i think that's one reason why people think the administration sided with morsi. but i think your basic point is correct. the military is the greatest force for stability in egypt. it's the place we have the greatest leverage. i hope that's what the administration worked on. but in any event, we needed the military to stop the muslim brotherhood and i think the coup was the right thing. >> ambassador, i hope you're doing well. i have an unusual question for you. today in america it is july 3. it is july 4 in egypt. is there any way we can inform them that they cannot share our independence day? >> well, i don't think they will rush to share it in any event.
11:14 pm
but this is a long way from being over. and while as i just said i support the military's action here, i think there is every prospect that will this could get a lot more tumultuous and even bloody before it's over. there is a fine, fine iron any here in ousting egypt's first elected president. but it was because he was on the way to as the saying goes one person, one vote, one time. and that had to be stopped. >> ambassador, i just wanted for know kind of your big picture thoughts on how this reflects on civility in that area, the other adjoining countries by egypt. >> democracy is a culture. it's a wave life. it's not simply holding elections and counting votes. it's much broader than that. and i think that's why the arab spring has come up wrong in so many cases. the culture just wasn't ready for it. that that's no knock on the middle east. europe didn't exactly cover itself with glory in the field
