erin, sarah and chelsea. we'll be hearing from them throughout the morning on this patriotic day. >> you sound that good this early in the morning? >>gretchen: no. my voice is a little bit lower. >>clayton: they asked me to warm up with them. i said no. >>clayton: good morning everyone. >> the very latest on egypt. mohamed morsi still being held at an undisclosed location after being ousted by the military. the very latest on the new developments with david. what does it look like? >> no change actually at the moment over in egypt. they have a new interim

president. adalai monsour was sworn in. the big question is where exactly is the deposed president, mohamed morsi? his supporters, the muslim brotherhood, say the former president is now under house arrest. it is being reported morsi was offered exile but refused. a number of key figures from his muslim brotherhood are also reported to have been arrested. the army went on the streets to secure key buildings and try to stop violence between rival groups. they also moved to stop pro-morsi tv channels from broadcasting and managers were arrested. this followed the end of the 48 hour ultimatum. a group went to national television to announce a new interim administration.

general sisi has strong ties to the u.s. military. he studied in d.c. and attended u.s. war college in pennsylvania. he was head of egypt's military intelligence and appointed by morsi in august 2012. anti-morsi crowds erupted in joy in tahrir square in cairo at general s i si's announcement. some were subdued. thankfully, there was very little violence overnight but of course it is early day for egypt. >>gretchen: thanks much. >>clayton: imagine waking up and finding out your constitution has been suspended and your president deposed and the country into chaos. imagine what happened last time a year ago when the military there in egypt took over and it was cronyism. it was a mess. things were not running smoothly. that's again what this country is facing this

morning. >>gretchen: i'm not so 100% optimistic about this. i know a lot of people said it was the muslim brotherhood in charge of egypt and they were not necessarily the best people to lead towards a democratic nation. but it was an election by the people 12 months ago, and there's some interesting editorials this morning saying maybe we should have allowed this country or the country should have allowed itself to have played this out. if morsi wasn't doing a good job, when the next election came up, you would have gotten rid of him in that way instead of the military taking over. >>peter: that's the interesting thing we face as americans. our history is one of revolution. we're born out of a declaration of interesting. it is interesting it happens the day before our own declaration of independence anniversary. at the same time we understand that the yoke of oppression sometimes calls for governments to be overthrown even though we're constitutionalists, even though we embrace democracy. so it's a balance that

america's facing. it's also a foreign policy balance when we understand that the suez canal is at risk, when we understand that the camp david peace accords are always at risk in relationship with egypt and when we understand a pipeline is at risk. it's kind of an interesting balance. >>gretchen: i'm nervous about the military being in charge. >>clayton: you're right. >>gretchen: they're saying they're going to move forward and have new elections and put certain things in past. we've seen in the past other military coups across the world that haven't exactly worked out. >>clayton: you bring up the suez canal and what a bellwether this is for the region. it is the most populous and influential. the reason we give so much money to the country over the years, we heard when the arab spring was unfolding we've got to pull our money out of there, it's a mess. you had members of congress saying wait a second. you can't necessarily do that. president obama saying we need to review our military aid to that country. if you look at the amount of money we've given to

that country from 2009 to 2013, close to $2 billion a year in foreign aid to that country. now the president is saying we need to have a review of this money. why now? >>gretchen: steve hayes was on special report last night. you know him as a fox news contributor. he had these thoughts with regard to that topic. >> the muslim brotherhood isn't going away. you've got -- they won the election for a reason. they are the best organized group in egypt. period. you've already had threats from brotherhood members to incite future violence. you had mohammed zawahari threatening to take up arms saying al qaeda and affiliates, sympathizers would be fighting in the streets in egypt. then you've got the problem not too long from now about what you do with the muslim brotherhood in future elections. they won the first election for a reason. these are all very tricky questions, but i don't think you want, even though this plainly is a coup, you don't want the united

states to be throwing aside the egyptian military at this point. we need to be supporting them. >>gretchen: just one more thought is that this si is i gentleman in charge of the military, sis i was put in place by morsi. they probably shared similar thoughts about sharia law. >>peter: the military is the upper class in egypt and will do anything they can to stay in power. >>clayton: look at the protest signs. you think this might not have anything to do with the united states, look at the signs. slamming president obama and making the claim of course that he had backed and was complicit in working with the muslim brotherhood. other signs go on to say that obama, you're a jerk. the muslim brotherhood, they're killing the egyptians. how come you guaranteed the security of this country?

basically tying it to them. >>peter: even when egypt is rejecting much of the muslim brotherhood, we are still the butt of a lot of their negative attention. >>gretchen: let's continue to discuss egypt today, but we have other headlines to bring you on this 4th of july. the f.b.i. investigating an incidents that happened on a flight headed for charlotte, north carolina. an agency spokesperson says one person has been interviewed in connection with that incidents. a u.s. airways spokesperson says a security concern arose on flight 114 from boston to charlotte. he says crew members quickly contacted charlotte police who met the plane on the tarmac after it landed. no one was injured and charges yet to be filed. a former cavern -- cavern counselor is killed -- camp counselor is killed by a falling oak tree. the 21-year-old camper was

eating breakfast outside with campers when the tree collapsed. >> there was something like a disease or something with the tree, and it just fell. >>gretchen: four other adults were hurt. two have been released from the hospital. two are still being treated. meantime one other adult is reportedly missing. fortunately no children were injured. who planted a bug at the ecuadorean embassy that wikileaks founder julian assange has been hiding at? it is said a brazilian company planted a bug. assange has been living at the embassy for the last year. he's trying to avoid extradition to sweden for a sexual assault case. she's back. the statue of liberty opening in time for the 4th of july. the island surrounding the patriotic symbol damaged by superstorm sandy. it took months for crews to repair broken walkways and dry out the island.

>>gretchen: 15 minutes after the top of the hour. celebrations in cairo as the military overthrows egyptian president morsi after he rejected a 48-hour ultimatum given by the army to get out basically. morsi now replaced by the chief justice of the constitutional court while their constitution remains suspended. so what will this mean for the country going forward and how will this impact the united states? joining me now foreign affairs columnist for the "wall street journal" brad stevens. good morning. thanks for getting up bright and early on our holiday, ironically independence day for us. is it independence for egypt as well? >> it is deliverance from a government with

totalitarian aspirations. there is a reason you see so many millions of egyptians celebrating in the streets these last couple days. >>gretchen: some editorials this morning are saying maybe the country should have let this play out since morsi was democratically elected, let it play out to the next elections. if he did a horrible job and unemployment continued to be a big, huge problem in that country and the economy on the downturn, maybe they would vote in somebody else instead of the military taking over. >> in some ways this may be a blessing in disguise for the muslim brotherhood because power is a poison chalice in egypt and whoever takes power has to drink from it. whoever is egyptian, you're waiting in gas lines that take all day. there is a possibility of major food shortages. they are running out of foreign exchange reserves and morsi has three years

to go in his constitutional term. three years is a long way for ordinary egyptians to be made to wait. >>gretchen: what do you expect for this transition period? they're calling it transition. what does that mean? weeks? months? a year? >> nobody knows. the problem is when you take power, you tend to like it and hold on to it. >>gretchen: and that's a concern. >> that's the real concern. general sisi, the new man in charge in effect would be very smart to move very quickly to early elections, to make those elections inclusive to try to draft the constitution which doesn't favor the islamists, which makes it more difficult for them to seize power. when you have the taste in your mouth it is hard to let go. >>gretchen: isn't it difficult to find a candidate that actually wouldn't have that mix of religion and politics? it's different in that part of the world than in america because religion is politics. >> i mean, yes and no. the muslim brotherhood managed to get 50.1% of the

vote a year ago which was a high water mark for them. there is no question they were at least at the time were the most unified political party. there are lots of secular parties except they were divided. they can come together around some unifying figure where there is mohammed el baradei, not my cup of tea, or someone like that. they might find a leader who will gain secular support and might gain the buy-in. >>gretchen: we'll continue to watch this as it develops by the hour. >> are you trying to go to florida? don't look at these signs for guidance. there is a huge spelling mistake. we'll point it out. it is one of the nation's biggest independence day celebrations. anna is getting a behind the scenes look at what takes in new york city. >> hello. i'm tech sergeant roberts.

macy's's annual 4th of july celebration. the 4th of july macy's fireworks display promises to be the single biggest fireworks display in america. they hauled in 70,000 pounds of equipment and hardware including 20,000 pound of explosives and five miles of wire. fireworks will take off from four separate barges along new york's hudson river. >> sometimes one and two are the same and it flips back and forth. it is going to be fun for people to watch. we wanted to create a dance party celebration of the independence day. >> we've seen smiley faces in years past but this year when they explode we're going to cecil ver, gold and red blinking eyes winking smiley faces. also jellyfish with whit selling tentacles coordinating with a song by usher. the show will be under his

liberty and the pursuit of happiness. and it was my belief that it was the job of government to assure that that occurred. but our government needed to be strong. it needed to offer security as well as liberty. i somewhat disagree with my aegis. i think in many respects america has become what i knew it could become. we are hercules among nation, the greatest nation on earth. we have the strongest military. i knew both were necessary -- a strong army and navy -- for us to thrive. we have succeeded, albeit with difficulty, in being a united people, a people who are united in mutual interest, mutual harmony and mutual happiness. the fact that there are disagreements is of course nothing new. his excellency and i experienced great difficulty at the hands of mr. jefferson and his so-called democratic republican party. >>peter: we have a fox news poll wondering what the founding fathers would think today.

is morsi this morning still defiant, david? >> we already know he hasn't been speaking and we understand he is under house arrest. we have a replacement for him. mansour, sworn in over an hour ago. in his acceptance speech, he praised the military who put him in power and also said the only future for egypt was parliamentary democracy. as i said, we're looking at where mohammed morsi is and his muslim brotherhood says he's under house arrest at this time. it's also being reported morsi was offered exile, but refused. also a number of key figures from morsi's muslim brotherhood are also reported to have been arrested. there are now reports quoting army sources that arrest warrants have been issued for muslim brotherhood leader mohammed badi and his deputy. the army earlier on the streets to secure key buildings and try to stop any fights between rival

groups and tried to stop rival groups from broadcasting. they acted swiftly. following meeting, the head of the military went on national television to announce a new administration and new elections later. general el sisi has strong ties to the u.s. military. he studied in dc and attended the u.s. war college in pennsylvania. the general was formerly head of the military intelligence and appointed by morsi in august 2012. his announcement that they depose morsi caused applause. but at the palace. >> there subdued feelings about what had happened. thankfully, there was very little violence overnight. of course, it's early for egypt.

back to you in the studio. >> gretchen: david piper live in jerusalem, thank you. >> peter: in the wake of this bloodless coup, a lot of americans are asking, did, in fact, the white house drop the ball in terms of foreign policy in egypt? john bolton was on the record last night, former ambassador to the u.n. taking on that specific issue. >> look, we have mishandled the situation in egypt for the last 2 1/2 years. i don't think the president knows really where he stands or what he wants to do. the anti-morsi demonstrators for the past several days have criticized the obama administration for standing with the muslim brotherhood, which most americans would find inexplicable. i think we shouldn't overstate our influence. i do think we've got influence with the military through years of providing extensive assistance. i hope that that was understood by the military and i think, although overturns an elected president, really it is in

america's interest to see the military try again to put egypt on the road to representative government. >> clayton: let's take you back in history. do you remember when this was all unfolding. the criticism being heaped on the white house at the time was as a result of their failure in iran. remember when the youth uprising movement in iran happened and we didn't get behind that movement there in iran? the criticism was, don't make that same mistake here. and you remember hillary clinton coming out and talking about mubarak as an ally, the amount of money we had given in aid to egypt at the time. we sat back on our hands and did nothing as this was unfolding here. as the arab spring -- it was only until later did we finally jump on board with this. then over those two years, as charles krauthammer the other night pointed out, it's been sitting on the fence, the president has, not sure whether or not to fully embrace the muslim brotherhood or get behind the military. >> gretchen: i think there is inconsistent foreign policy at best here 'cause you look at what happened with libya and syria. libya, although nato in, but basically the united states and other european nations. but in syria, really nothing

done. similarly in iran and egypt, two different stories there. so since the united states did go in the last time in egypt, they decided not to this time. it seems to me just to be inconsistent. >> peter: inconsistency may have become even muddled at some point. there has been a lot of observers in this country who are saying, well, the muslim brotherhood has taken egypt toward sharia law, taken egypt towards really an anti-american philosophy that even the president probably didn't expect based on some of his support earlier. now john bolton is saying, this policy has been a horror show for the last 2 1/2 years and now we have to face a military that's taken over this country. >> clayton: right. whether or not democracy will take hold, you see the fireworks there, what the people want largely. this is a larger protest than it was the last time around. though if you look at some of the blogs from that area and bloggers putting up signs and protest signs, anti-american signs about president obama, these are photos put up on

different blogs around the region talking about the -- in collusion with the muslim brotherhood and slamming the united states for being part and parcel of this whole government that was in place by morsi. >> gretchen: it's interesting because when you juxtapose these particular signs that again, these are on blogs that are coming out from that region, when you juxtapose that to the fact that cairo was the location that president obama chose to go when he initially became president to try and bring back together, in his mind, the muslims into liking america again. it's interesting when you look at the recent polls that that really hasn't happened. now to see these types of signs about president obama not in a positive light. >> peter: it's a strange, strange context 'cause on one hand, we're attacked in the islamic world as being anti-islamic. but at the same time, folks are putting up signs in egypt saying that somehow we were united with the islamic brotherhood. that we're anti-democratic and

pro -- in islamic califate. so what is it? where are we? >> clayton: good point. more on that coming up on the show. >> gretchen: lots to talk about. we do have other headlines. the f.b.i. investigating an incident that happened on a flight headed for charlotte, north carolina. an agency spokesperson says one person has been interviewed in connection with some sort of an incident on the airplane. a u.s. airways spokesperson says a security concern arose on flight 114 from boston to charlotte. he says crew members quickly contacted charlotte police who met the plane on the tarmac after it landed. no one was injured and charges have yet to be filed. police search on a secret con did he aaron hernandez rented uncovering new evidence in the case against the nfl star. cops found a white hooded sweatshirt. they also discovered a stash of ammunition, including the same caliber bullets used in lloyd's death. hernandez is charged with

for stupid people because you know that you're going to burn if you're out there without any suntan lotion on and people think it will turn into a tan. does it? >> believe it or not, when i was a kid, not when you were a kid, when i was a kid, we thought that. we were taught that. go out and burn and it will become a tan. ridiculous myth. it's fiction. it damages your skin. you get peeling. you get redness. you get injury to the skin and increases your risk of skin cancer. >> clayton: people think that they're going to get brown after they get that red, it's going to turn into that. >> it damages the skin. no tanning is good for you, by the way. no tang. it's all unhalty. but the worst is get that burn. it will end up being uneven and you won't get a tan. >> clayton: i grew up with my mom saying that if you swallow those seeds from a watermelon, it's going to grow inside of you. people believe that. >> that's also a total myth. but there is a couple of points you'll find fascinating. seeds can get caught in parts of the colon, like the appendix and can be an inflammation and a

problem. >> clayton: but no melon? >> no melons will grow. you know something, there has been some cases of trees growing in lungs. lungs are moist. lungs are sponges. you could actually grow a in lungs, but not in the g.i. tract, not in the stomach, 'cause it's acidic. lungs yes. stomach no. >> clayton: growing hydro hydroponically. you probably have great oxygen. myth number three, you can catch poison ivy from someone who has it. if the wind would blow in my direction, i would catch it out in the woods. i always thought if someone else had it and you touched them, you would get it. >> you saw me scratching when we came on here. peter johnson, jr. says that's bed bugs. the truth is that's neither. but poison ivy is not catchy because poison ivy is from the oil of the plant. so once you have the rash and it takes two or three days for it to fully spread. so you think it's something in the rash that's contagious, it's not the rash. it's the oil of the plant.

there is very little oil on that rash. so someone touches it, they're not going to catch it. it's a myth. >> clayton: scratching a bug bite makes it worse? >> this one, just to shake you up, is true. this is a fact. because there is bacteria understand the skin and this bacteria under the fingernails. when you take bug bite and scratch it, you risk the chance of getting it infected. it happens all the time. so i tell people out there, put a little anti-itching cream, something so that you don't scratch the thing. it gets much worse and that's when it gets infected. >> clayton: especially with kids. look up at the representation of our independence, of what they sacrificed for? >> you're absolutely right. at the air force academy in colorado springs, a long-time tradition has been the fourth of july celebration, the fireworks and the entire community comes out to celebrate. they bring picnic baskets and have patriotic music. not this year. again, it's because of this sequester. the military says they have to cut back. the average fireworks display at the military costs around $25,000 to shoot off bottle rockets and cherry bombs. >> peter: you talked this before, about some of the inconsistencies. so it's something you've called $100 million african vacation for the president. >> that's right. >> peter: but at the same time, something as simple and really relatively inexpensive as a fireworks display at camp lejeune to celebrate our marines' sacrifice can't be done. so i think americans are going to be outraged by this. >> i did the math. i wasn't very good at math, but

independence day celebration of "fox & friends." >> peter: happy july 4th. what could be more beautiful about america the beautiful than those young women, as my friend david would say, a gorgeous mosaic of america. >> gretchen: nice way to say it. welcome to peter and clayton filling in for steve and brian. hello to them and everyone else. we have a lot of headlines to tell you about today and some developing stories going on across the world, egypt specifically. first this, the f.b.i. investigating an incident that happened on a flight headed for charlotte, north carolina. an agency spokesperson says one person has been interv connection with some sort of an incident on that airplane. u.s. airways spokesperson says a security concern arose on flight 114 from boston to charlotte. crew members quickly contacted charlotte police who met the plane on the tarmac after it landed. no one injured. charges have yet to be filed. summer camp counselor is killed by a falling oak tree. it happened here at california's camp tawonga outside yosemite.

he was eating breakfast outside with campers and that is apparently when the tree collapsed. >> there was some type of something, like a disease or something with the tree and it just fell. >> gretchen: four other adults were hurt. two have been released from the hospital. two are still being treated. meantime, one other adult reportedly missing. fortunately, no children were injured. two american teens who went missing on a boat trip in honduras are safe. they were rescued with six others after being stranded at sea for five days. the engine broke down 65 miles from where they set off. the coast guard did spot them as they waved frantically for help, as you can see in that video. here they are getting off an army helicopter. they're now in the hands of doctors to make sure everything is okay. this could be the best wedding toast ever. ♪ it was meant to be ♪

over there to the potentially destabilizing move this morning in egypt? >> clayton, anybody who is surprised at what's happened in egypt hasn't been paying attention. there is no official reaction from the karzai government, nor will there be any from the u.s. government side from where i am until we get it from washington. of course, that's all waiting for what the white house is actually going to say and do about it. the bottom line of it is, anybody who is surprised shouldn't be, it's been very clear for months now that morsi was doing terrible things to the economy, that the muslim brotherhood was not doing what the people had hoped it would do after mubarak was deposed. i think what we're looking at is a period of transition again while they try to determine what the shape of democracy is going to be over there. >> gretchen: what do you make of how the united states has reacted to the situation, colonel?

>> well, i'm never surprised at washington's inability to figure out what's going on given our lack of human intelligence. we've got a serious problem throughout this part of the world. i'm not just talking about afghanistan, i'm talking about throughout the entire middle east. we don't know who the good guys are in the battle for syria. we don't know who the good guys are left in libya, tunisia. when you look at the instability in that part of the world, about the only folks you know what is going on is israel. of course, we've got an election here in afghanistan in april of next year. so there is grave uncertainty and the lack of human intelligence. not technical intelligence, is what's driving that uncertainty. >> peter: what's the greatest risk, colonel, that you see based on the situation that's going on in egypt now, the greatest risk to american interests as this thing plays out? >> well, look, america desperately needs friends in this part of the world. we all know that the iranians

are intent on developing nuclear weapons. access to friendly play season in this part of the world is crucial. instability in egypt isn't good for anybody. it doesn't make people feel better in jerusalem or tel aviv and doesn't do anything for us in washington. the bottom line is, we ought to hope we can find a stable government that represents the interest of all the people of egypt. >> clayton: colonel, one of the big things that we've been hearing about this morning, some of the hesitation has been look, maybe morsi should have been allowed to let this play out, right? after all, he was democratically elected and now this constitution is suspended and yes, it was pushed through pretty quickly. but after all, shouldn't it have been allowed to play out democratically? >> well, look, the army is the institution of greatest stability in the country. the army decided that what morsi was doing was contrary to the interest of the people of egypt. the riots that we've seen in the streets of egypt over the course of the last several weeks

reflects that. what the army decided with mubarak is they had enough of him. they've now decided the same thing about morsi. the bottom line is, the people of egypt, not the people of the united states, are the ones who need to determine what that outcome is going to be. >> peter: whether silver star or bronze star, two purple hearts, you've always been known as someone who cared about your troops, who cared about your marines, and you're there proving it again today. how are our marines, our soldiers, our sailors, airmen, how are they celebrating the 4th in afghanistan? >> let me bring one of those great soldiers right here next to me. this is first sergeant gary oliver, united states army. he is part of this force that's out here. let me ask him. how did you celebrate independence day? >> just a normal day for us. >> you got up today and you escorted a u.s. senator and watched him do what? >> we had the opportunity to watch senator mccain and

the other big news on fourth of july is that lady, the statue of liberty. reopening just in time for the 4th. the 12-acre island was damaged by super storm sandy last october ex tensesively. bobby moses is on the ground on liberty island for us today. robert? >> what a spectacular sight here on liberty island this morning. we're standing right at the base of lady liberty. she's rising right behind us. the first visitors will arrive later on this morning. we're expecting about 15,000 people to visit lady liberty today. this is a grand return for the statue, just in time for independence day. part of the statue opened on october 28 last year. but just a day later, super storm sandy hit and flooded three quarters of this island. while the statue held up just fine, the infrastructure around it did not. workers spent the last eight months repairing that infrastructure. if you are going to visit today,

panhandle of florida in the last 48 hours. let's go to the map. i'll show you where the areas are seeing some rain. i wish i could say sunshine and clear skies for everybody's barbecue, but we'll see the potential for more heavy rain across the areas like the florida panhandle, up towards the southeast and interior sections of the northeast because we've got the jet seem and then the high pressure just off the coast in the atlantic. that's funneling in all of this tropical moisture that's going to really put a dumper on -- damper on some barbecues. some might be canceled in parts of georgia, up towards the carolinas. so flood advisories are posted. just be careful. keep an ear to your local forecast. there is your fourth of july forecast. otherwise much of the country pretty well behaved. 93 in albuquerque. hot where we have extreme heat advisory. 88 in new york. it's oppressive across the northeast with the humidity. so just be really careful, especially with little kids and elderly. make sure they're hydrated. there is your fireworks

they're celebrating, fireworks going off. are they happy the military is back in here? >> absolutely. they explicitly asked the military. this is being called a coup. you had a massive revolution happening in egypt with millions of people in the street, far bigger crowds than were protesting mubarak and they said to the military, please step in and solve this crisis. they did it. >> clayton: can we expect it to be different this time? last time we'd constitution that was rushed through, it was slip shod. of course, now that constitution is suspended. will it be thrown out completely? how will this be different? >> the constitution is suspended, but the military says they're going to transition to a democratic process, have constitutional amendments and i too think it's going to be different. that's because the ideology of the muslim brotherhood has just suffered its biggest blow since its founding in 1928. >> clayton: would it have been better if morsi stayed in power, disbanded the government, brought in an entirely new above

[ applause ] nicely done. >> gretchen: there is a communication badge that they can earn. so sometimes girl scouts and boy scouts have come to watch us. >> i've never been a girl scout. >> clayton: i was in the girl scads, i got that badge.
