with severe conditions. we weren't dealing with a storm system like that. obviously we'll continue to monitor the weather, partly cloudy skies, winds very light at around 9 miles an hour and temperatures around 66 degrees. so, gregg, they will look at weather in terms of whether or not this was something that could have hampered the landing or not. what i can see in the last couple of hours, certainly looking at cloud cover but conditions were calm relatively speaking around the san francisco area. >> gregg: we're going to continue to follow the events. a plane has crash landed. it is a boeing triple 7, largest twin engine jet in the world. we don't know how many people were on board or nature of casualties but according to a witness, according to ttvu, the plane's tail as it was about to land came off

>> gregg: that is a 22 second clip from youtube it would appear it came from the terminal and passenger arriving or about to take off taking the videotape of the immediate aftermath of the plane crash. a witness, according to television station ttvu, says the plane was about to land and landing gear was down but suddenly before it touched down, the tail of the plane -- we can't tell you what part -- but the tail. plane came off causing the plane to wobble. it skidded along the runway and flipped over and came to a rest on its back.

emergency crews on the scene under taking rescues and we'll try to get you the details as we receive them. we'll continue to follow this breaking news story. we can tell you that this boeing 777, triple 7 as it is known, it is capable of carrying 314 people to 451 depending upon which 777 model is being used. >> heather: there are on social media the emergency fly have been deployed and passengers were seen exiting on those. some passengers have been able to get out. we know there are no injuries or any reports on injuries at this hour, but as we continue to look at this video. clearly, what can be described as a bad plane crash. >> gregg: absolutely.
12:21 pm
obviously the plane is landing and everybody in their seats, buckled in, flight attendants make sure of that but nevertheless when the plane wobbles and flips over and ends up on the back, you worry about the fire hazard. heavy smoke is still coming from this plane. one of the things they would likely do is foam down the plane to make sure it doesn't explode. then try to get to the injured passengers as quickly as possible. one hopes that the injuries are minimum. the nature of the smoke, it's very difficult for us to tell whether or not the plane has split into pieces. if it flipped over on its back, one would assume it sustained considerable damage as it again crash landed at san francisco international airport. >> heather: you were mentioning earlier, the airport it's about 12 miles

south of downtown san francisco. this clearly will be causing some airport delays there and across the country as people travel on this busy 4th of july holiday. we certainly hope that the people that were on board the plane are okay. we see safety personnel are there trying to make sure they can get them off of that plane safely. >> gregg: you were mentioning south of san francisco, it's very close to candlestick park which is south of san francisco. it's surrounded by water for takeoff and landing. there is an industrial complex there as well as an office park. the terminal itself is really out of the way of downtown san francisco as you sort of heading down highway 101 heading south. it is just off to the left in the bay part of san francisco, not on the ocean side but the bay side of

upside-down according to this eyewitness and came to a stop on its back. if you take a look at the video, specifically the youtube video that we saw just a moment ago. it would appear to me that it is upright. >> gregg: i can't really tell. in the youtube video you could see it a little more clearly. it appeared to be upright. these are initial reports coming from from wits and such. we are waiting to find out exactly what happened and hearing officials. hopefully we can get in touch with someone shortly so we can bring you actual confirmed information as to what happened to this plane. >> gregg: again, it could carry as many as 450 people depending on what model the boeing 777 that it is. i believe it was united airlines that first made use of the boeing triple 7 back in 1995.

n.t.s.b. member under the reagan administration. are you joining us by phone. are you seeing these pictures and what can you tell us in terms of your experience you believe has happened to this plane? what would be the situation with the passengers who were on board? >> well, the thing is, one of the later versions of boeing aircraft. it sounds like very capable airport in terms of emergency response and everything else. if the aircraft is integral and one piece which apparently it is, that bodes well, i think, but i would like to know what the weather is. i haven't had a picture in front of me. so you can help me. >> weather has been pretty good. >> it's sunny and few clouds, nine miles per hour winds, 60 degrees, does that help? >> that is good. if it landed fairly well down on the runway, we know that?
12:31 pm
>> gregg: it's being described toward the end of the runway. what we are seeing more clearly the picture moving closer to the plane is is a lot of burn damage on the top of the plane where the passengers would be sitting. one wonders the nature of those injuries. we are getting reports of burn injuries, but getting out of that plane would have again critical? >> and particularly if had you a long flight and you got elderly or infirm people or you have tired people. to get them out of the aircraft, depending, if it was not fire close to the airport, you have to think about what caused the ignition of the fire as it ran down the runway. >> from looking at these pictures, we can tell you that the burn damage that we're seeing is primarily behind the cockpit area toward the middle of the

end of the wing area. tail end of the plane itself does not appear to have burn damage on the top. does that tell you anything about with a may have happened here? >> the galley is where the fire started from the sound. in the back of the wing is still integral and no difficulty i think there would were a lot of people able to get off. you had a number of emergency exits after the wing. they will be sliding off of there. any kind of emergency, you have another problem and that is getting people to jump on to -- is on tail and gear did not collapse then it's got enough distance for the escape to come down those chutes but people are reticent to jump. so you have injuries at the bottom -- but it bodes
12:33 pm
well. is there fire. >> gregg: no the fire is out. you can see black soot damage. the landing gear appears to have collapsed as it skidded along the runway. doctor, according to an eyewitness this so website that around 11:20 a.m. i would assume that is san francisco time, the plane was just about to land. landing gear had come down when the tail of the plane came off. what do you make of that? what do you make the tail coming off? >> someone says it looks like the aircraft is integral. is it broken in two or not. >> gregg: no, it looks like the back end where the tail would be is gone. >> it is, is it open at the back end. >> heather: it did look
12:34 pm
like it was open actually. we had a shot of that and tail end of the plane, it did look like it was open. >> then you are going to have quite a few injuries if that is true. no tail, are the slides deployed and people getting out? >> there is one slide on one side what it appears of plane toward the front that was deployed. the other side it does not appear deployed in front of the wing. >> gregg: now we're getting a better picture, the tail is gone. it look like there is an opening on the back end? >> whole tend left on the runway, i guess. >> gregg: the entire tail is gone? >> that would not bode too well, it collapsed on the
12:35 pm
gear. >> gregg: it looks like the gear collapsed and the belly of the plane is now on the ground. have you ever heard of a tail coming off in flight? >> no, not even if it had a violent maneuver and apparently it didn't as it approached. it's odd -- unless there was something exploded inside the aircraft to break it off. those aircraft shouldn't come apart. >> heather: i can tell you this, a shot earlier of the top of the plane was the burn area is, you can actually see water being shot into the cabin there. at least in the middle portion there, where the wings are and you see the burn area, that is open. there is a hole in the top of the plane that looks like it is running all the way across from one ring to the other on the top of this plane? >> back at the tail?
12:36 pm
>> heather: in the middle portion of the cabin between the two wings. >> gregg: it looks like it simply burned off. in other words, the top of the plane opposite the belly burned off? >> you know, there is some precedence about this, this is asiana airlines, the thing about whether they are up to snuff as much as they might be. if the aircraft hit the runway hard enough to snap off the tail that is one thing. then they might not survive and hasn't. skipped down the runway but would slow down fast but then do you see and they had fire on top of that, right? >> gregg: yes. it looks like they are pouring water on the top of the plane. i would imagine by now all the passengers are out.
12:37 pm
it doesn't look like anybody is being pulled from the wreckage at the time. >> that is odd. >> heather: the pictures, like like this was really bad fire on board this plane. it's black, the entire cabin area, zoomed in, from the we said all the way back to just behind the wing, completely black, burned out, open to the sky on the top of this plane. as gregg was saying, tail end gone and open. >> i'm picking up a video of myself to see it. the aircraft is collapsed on the runway, it's not lined up very well. >> gregg: adjacent to the runway in a dirt area. >> heather: only one emergency chute looks to
12:38 pm
have been deployed. >> wow! they have a lot of fire retardant on the airplane. they must have responded fairly fast but it look like the top of the aircraft has fire damage and the tail is gone. that is amazing to me. you see that the right wing is also, wing tip knocked off. so it took a violent hit right there. >> gregg: what appears adjacent to plane a triage area where medical personnel together with firefighters seem to have gathered and maybe treating some people still at that location. taking others to area hospitals. there are several nearby not only in redwood city but in san francisco as well which is just up the highway 101. they may have used some emergency aircraft as well,
12:39 pm
helicopters for emergency flights for some of the patients. >> it will be very interesting if the air traffic control conversation between the air draft and the controllers. i don't know whether they declared an emergency. that is one thing. if the emergency was a surprise, that is quite something else. >> heather: as people are watching. let's bring them up to speed. a plane has crashed at san francisco international airport. we know that that this is was a boeing 777 identified as asiana flight 214 coming from south korea according to flight tracking information. we did not know how many people were on board this plane. we do know there were initial reports from witnesses it happened around 11:30 a.m. it appears that the landing gear, at least initial reports from witnesses, have h come down when the tail of the plane came off. you are looking at triage
12:40 pm
area set up near the crash site. the plane has significant burn damage. you can see damage to both wings. at least one emergency khuitd deployed as crews worked to take care of the passengers aboard this flight. >> gregg: dr. gross, thank you for your insights. >> according to a witness according to ttvu, the witness said the plane, it's tail -- its tail apparently came off when the landing gear when the tail of the plane suddenly came off. after wobbling for a minute, according to this witness the aircraft flipped upside-down coming to a stop on its back but clearly that is not the case because the plane is on its belly. its top is burned out
12:41 pm
and -- there you see some of the debris from what i presume was the tail. it seems to be three pieces. one at the top of the screen. other two down near the right hand corner and those are lying on the run way. as chopper shot pulls out a little bit, we'll be able to see the proximity to the wreckage of the plane. again we want to bring into our conversation, robert mark who a commercial pilot, editor of jet flight.com who has flown into this airport. talk to us -- are you seeing the same pictures and give us your thoughts what may have happened? >> i am seeing the same pictures. i think that was the question that was in the back of my mind exactly where the tail portion of the aircraft portion was. to find it in the runway safety area short of the approach end of the runway,
12:42 pm
if it fell off, obviously that is where it came lose but also possible they may have hit very hard, made a hard landing enough it could have severed the tail. that has happened in the past. it's not very frequent because as your last caller mentioned these airplanes are extremely strong. to find the tail where it is and i can't quite see how far down the runway the rest of the fuselage is. but once the tail came off, pilot didn't have much of a controllable airplane. >> gregg: explain the function of the tail and how important it is for the ability for pilots to control a plane? >> there are two portions of the tail. there is what we call the elevator which controls the up and down pitching of the nose and the rudder which kind of controls the left right movement of the aircraft. us a you approach the end
12:43 pm
of the runway you are still flying and what pilots will do, bring the control wheel back to pitch the nose up so they don't touchdown to the nose gear. they touch on the mains and they slow, they slowly release the pressure on the wheel, but there is still steevg with the rudder. i'm seeing where the aircraft is now. i didn't travel very far from the time the tail came off. again without those controls, they wouldn't be able to do much with the airplane except hold on. while there is noseable steering, if it hit hard enough to sever the tail it probably collapsed the gear as well. >> heather: i have a question. in terms initial pictures that we were receiving from this plane crash. you could see thick black smoke billowing from the
12:44 pm
scene? >> that is pretty bad.i'm lookio right now of the cabin. that was a very bad fire in there. to have those two sections completely burned and blackened through, that was an intense fire. as we may have mentioned, it looks to me like one, maybe two slides are extended of triple 7, i think it has six or eight. that means they couldn't get those doors open because the doors were, or nobody could get to them. i don't know how many people did survive, but again, the fire was pretty intense here. >> gregg: asiana flight has crashed while landing at san francisco international airport today. faa isn't really giving any information about injuries
12:45 pm
or fatalities. we can't pass that along. it's obviously very large plane as you can see. according to some of the data we have on this boeing triple 7, it can carry as many as 451 passengers depending on which model it is. it's not immediately clear what caused the crash. we mentioned the witness who said it lost its tail. we'll be getting additional information. there was a video clip posted to youtube showing smoke coming from the jet as it was like on tarmac. some passengers, now i'm getting this from kgo san francisco, channel 7, passengers could be seen jumping down the inflatable emergency slides. so that is good news to
12:46 pm
know that some passengers were able to get out. one hopes that everybody was able to get out. when you look at the full extent of the fire damage on the top of the plane, boy, this is a bad crash, a bad ensuing fire. >> heather: we don't know what came first. what caused that tail to come off of that plane. if it was something that happened initially in the cabin of this plane, perhaps a fire or explosion then caused the tail to blow off. or if the tail came off and because of the landing of the plane, hard landing the fire or explosion happened after that. those are all a lot of questions we'll have to uncover. i do know this. this is coming from the airline itself. their website, airline is based out of seoul and according to them their model carries anywhere from
12:47 pm
246 to 300 passengers. a very large boeing 777 coming from south korea. all of this happening around 11:30 a.m. san francisco time. >> gregg: there you see the aftermath just adjacent to the runway is this asiana bowing 777 and triage area is next to it. looks like they are still pouring water or fire retardant onto the plane. it doesn't look like anybody is still being pulled out of the wreckage, but according to kgo, one of the inflatable slides deployed and people were seeing jumping down the slide to safety. the redwood city fire department says that they
12:48 pm
brought personnel there to treat burn victims. we would imagine given the burn damage to the top of the plane, that is certainly the case. >> heather: earlier we were talking about the history of asiana airlines. they had two major crashes, this would be the third. since the airline was founded in 1998, one of those in 1993 a crash that happened -- that apparently was a domestic passenger jet that slammed into a hill that happened in southwestern south korea killing 68 people on board. that was an asiana boeing 737 and then again a second crash happened just in 2011. with asiana, two passengers died when a cargo plane
12:49 pm
crashed into waters off the southern coast of south korea. apparently that in that particular crash there was a report of a fire in the cargo component. so a compartment of that plane in 2011, caused from a cargo fire in the cargo compartment. this would be the third major crash involving asiana airlines. we don't know the extent of injuries nor do we know how many passengers were on board. >> gregg: weather conditions appear to have been calm. partly cloudy skies, light winds, temperatures in the 60s, 9 mile-per-hour winds so fairly calm having lived in san francisco for about eight years. it gets quite windy in the city. it's calmer to the south which is where this airport is located.
