it's great and now it can increase your risk for prostate cancer? >> yes, there's confusion so we want to clarify this. this study that was published -- this study wasn't designed to find out if the fish oil causes prostate cancer. this was an incidental association that was found in this. we have to be very careful about this. part of this select study that looked at vitamin e, a few months ago we talked about vitamin e that can increase the risk of prostate cancer by 17%. now they're finding the same thing with omega 3 fatty acid. where do i stand? i want to answer the folks that e-mailed me. omega 3 fatty acid is good for heart, alzheimer's, for children for brain development, but you've got to be careful how much you take. there's a whole culture in america about this hollywood supplements, vitamins, and if she takes it, i want to take more. marc wants to take more than i do. that's a mistake.
7:31 am
supplements should be treated as medications even though there is no prescription. when you take them, especially at high level of fish oil, which is what this study is about, you can change the physiology. at the normal dose it can protect you. it can reduce inflammation, it can help you with cancer and diabetes at high dose. >> what is high dose? >> when you say normal and high, what should we do? >> that's excellent. >> you should not be taking more than three grams a day. that's the recommendation. let me just tell you that the finding of this study was the difference between low dose and high dose was only two portions of salmon, that's t. what i recommend people is balanced diet is the best thing. if you don't have to take supplements and you have balanced diet, that's fine. two portions of salmon a week is perfectly fine. >> what if you have more? >> this is what happens. what people do is they take their salmon three, four times a week. they take their trc, flak seed and now all of a sudden you have a very high dose of omega 3
7:32 am
fatty acid that can cause a problem. that's what this is about. you want to make sure you talk to your doctor and find out what the level is before you take too much. >> how much do you take? >> look, you see the fish oil on the shelf is like 1,200 milligrams. how much do you take and what do you do? >> couple of points. first of all, this is the third study that have shown a link between omega 3 fatty acids and prostate cancer. even though we tend to look at inflammation as causing cancer and this is confusing because omega 3s are low in inflammation, even the study author said i don't know why i'm finding this, it could be that they're metabolically active. the metabolically active chemicals, they break down and they may actually somehow lead to prostate cancer. we don't know why yet. in terms of what to take, eric, i want to make an important
7:33 am
point. there's fish and there's supplements. you may be eating fish to protect yourself against eating a cheeseburger. you might eat fish because it's part of a med der rainian diet and it's healthy. that's not the same as taking supplements. we have a statement from the study author, alan crystal. let's hear what you're supposed to eat. the study was for any source of long-chain omega 3 fatty acids, so those would be high in fish consumption or supplement use, it would take three to you four serving of fish per week to get into the highest week. exposure for omega 3 supplements, even once every third day would put you in the highest group. david was already sayings this. three to four portions of fish a week or more could be problematic. with supplements, if you take them twice a week. why would anyone need the supplements that are at risk for prostate cancer. no supplements. >> one second. i know this is about men. >> men.
7:34 am
>> you pretty much called out what i eat. you must be in my house in my cupboard. it's the salmon, it's the fish oil, it's the flak seed. is this a problem for women? >> i think right now the discussion is all about prostate cancer, obviously that's the important part. don't overdo it. more is not better. now there's something that i want people to know. there's also omega 3 fatty acid index. you can ask your doctor to draw your blood and find out if your level of dma and epa, you want to write this down, everyone is taking noetsz, whether it's too high or not. that's how you adjust it. what i want people to know is treat every one of those portions of salmon almost like 1,000 milligrams. if you're getting two pourings plus once or twice of supplements, that's more than enough. individualized medicine is the way to go. to go to the stores and pick up big bottles of fish oil and because your neighbor is taking it you should be taking it drk. >> it's not a competition. >> not about you. people think taking supplements is a great thing. >> you made a great point.
7:35 am
it's about men and prostate cancer we're talking about. there's a growing body of evidence -- >> one last thing because i know we're talking out of time. if you have had a radical pros stay tekt my, you are okay to take the supplements but talk to your doctor. >> it's okay. i know it wasn't about me. this is something that's important. there's also something important, nearly 60 million americans take an aspirin every day to help prevent heart attacks and stroke, but a new study finds it may not be fully effective for everyone. go to you on this one, dr. marc. >> i think this is making the same kind of point about personalized medicine that we just made on omega 3s. are aspirin for everyone? for years i said everybody over the age of 50 should take it, taking in mind the risk of -- we know that 25% of the people who
7:36 am
are on aspirin have strokes anyway, have heart attacks anyway, so the question is is there a group that doesn't respond as well to aspirin? it's something called aspirin response signature. i know you love that. >> how do you know if you're part of that group? >> aspirin response signature? are you part of the group that responds to aspirin or not? well, at duke they're looking at genetic material, rna they call t it's called rna, to see if your platelets or the things that make your blood stick are responding to aspirin or not responding to aspirin. i'll tell you why that's important. when you have a heart attack, you get a plague in your artery, coronary artery that burst, and up come the platelets and they stick and you get a blood clot. we need the aspirin to prevent that from forming. if the aspirin is not working i can tell you in two or three years from now, you're in that group that shouldn't take the omega 3s and you shouldn't take aspirin because the risks are high and you're not getting the benefit. >> the most important part was
7:37 am
aspirin resistance. in this study from duke, they're finding out not everybody is responding the same way. one may react more and one may absolutely be resistant. that's why 20% of the people that are taking aspirin, they continue to have stroke and heart disease. so what i like about this study is that it's a genetic markers looking at the physiology of aspirin. we never had this before. i think what's interesting is when you take lipitor or some medication for your cholesterol, your blood pressure, we can follow and find out what does that medication do to you? does it bring the cholesterol down? does it help with your blood pressure? we don't know about the aspirin. now what they're finding out is exactly the dose and effect of it. so someone may be taking a low dose aspirin, 81 milligram. someone else may need to take 325 milligram and that's why this is important. >> what's the fish oil test? >> omega 3 fatty acid index. >> omega 3 fatty acid index.
7:38 am
>> eric, in two years you'll walk into your office and you'll say, doc, you say i should have aspirin. is it going to work or isn't it? i'll be able to tell you what the chances are it will work. >> what's that test called? >> it's called aspirin response signature. >> it's a genetic test right now. you need to know if you're at high risk you should take aspirin and talk to your doctor. low risk, don't take aspirin. not everybody should be on aspirin. but to take aspirin on everybody, there are side effects with this. >> talk to your doctor. i agree. >> bottom line. >> aspirin and fish oil. do you like spaghetti carbonara. well, coming up, a new reason why to avoid the heavy foods and carbs. >> really? >> the meals can trigger the craving for even more. >> yeah, okay. also juice cleansing, you know those, those cleansers, they're a hot new trend. folks attempting to eliminate toxins from their body, but the

[ male announcer ] that's handy. ♪ back now at "sunday housecall." you're is thing at a restaurant, you didn't eat enough, it's spaghetti, you want more. it turns out carb addiction is real. meals with a high carb load, it gives you the feeling to stuff your face more. >> dr. samadi, you look at it, you keep on going. >> then what happens? an hour later you're hungry again. this is a great study. this comes from harvard and i love this. there's a distinction between carbohydrate and protein.
7:44 am
something called high glycemic index and low glycemic index. high carbohydrates, look at their blood and look at the mri. what they're finding is that their blood sugar, the people who have all the pasta, pieces, all of that stuff was really low. the one with protein was normal. white breads, white rice, all of these carbohydrates, the sugar goes up really fast in your blood and insulin kicks in and comes down. the sugar stock market. this peak and valley continues and what it does to you, the brain, it basically makes some receptors insensetive, dope a mine. starvation center changes. people with a lot of pasta and those foods, they eat a lot, get hungry and eat more. that cycle continues as opposed to fruit and vegetables and low

glycemic index, lent tills, beans, all of that good stuff, have a low sugar in their blood. cut down on the carbs, that's the study. >> put good gas in your car and it runs better. bad gasz, it's not going to work. >> great analogy. you've been a gene yous on ribonucleic as city acid. >> some may benefit from omega 3s, some not, a lot of people may not aspirin, some not. nobody benefits from all of these carbs. low grains, low glycemic index. >> you want that. >> because the body metabolizes it slowly. what this study did, it was only in 12 people, it was very dramatic. when you gave a shake with this stuff loaded with sugar, david
7:46 am
was saying the mri, the brain lights up. four hours later the hunger centers of the brain, it's addiction. this is a form of addiction. people get addicted to these foods. they don't get the normal dopamine response in the brain. that's the chem cap that gives us energy and wants us to move. >> music does it to you too sometimes, releases dopamine. >> sure. but you don't make the dopamine unless you get these foods. as soon as you get the sugar, you don't get the dopamine. >> you have to switch to whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bagels. >> i'll put a caveat on that, eric. we've done another topic about gluten alallergies. check with your physician on what you should eat. we have a problem with gluten in this country as well. >> we do. >> grains are definitely healthier for you, full grains, than white flour. >> than brown rice? >> not good. we don't have time to go into every particular one, but you read about high glycemic index
7:47 am
foods versus low glycemic. if you're hungry, have apple, banana, other fruits and vegetables. that will keep you steady for a long time. that's why if you look at europeans, if you are in europe, you don't see a lot of obese. in general, they eat a lot but they don't gain much weight because they're always eating. they keep their sugar level steady, whereas, big fat pasta, bread, other things, they have that and that's not good for you. >> they don't have who hos ther. >> thank you for shouting out that i called rna, ribonucleic acid. >> dr. colby mold today. >> that's a good compliment. when we come back, it's the new craze in weight loss gain. we're talking about a juice cleanse. celebrities swear by it and make money from it.
7:48 am
7:52 am
a new trend in the weight loss battle, more people doing more of the cleanses that rids the body of toxins. do they help or harm your body? >> i want to tell people to be careful of these things. it all started with something called the master cleanse that was developed in the 1940s by a guy named burrows who was then actually indicted for pretending to give medical care out. that has been copied and used all over the place. it has could cayan peppers and lemonade 1k3 -- and maple syrup. it puts the body in the position where it does not get the nutrients it needs. we need well balanced diets. the notion that you need a time-out for your colon or stomach does not work medically. every cell in the body is detox fying all the time. the the liver is the major organ of detox fying and the kidney and sweating. your body is always a machine getting rid of toxins. the idea that a cleanse does that for you is problematic.
7:53 am
i don't have a problem with a spiritual concept of this. we fast on yom kipur every year. how about taking a time-out with a fast or some kind of maybe switching to juices for a couple of days and making sure they have proteins and vegetables, if what you are using is well balanced it is okay. i am also concerned about the idea of underling medical problems. people may do this and then may be on diuretics and may have problems with blood pressure or heart disease. i had a patient last week that got into trouble taking a cleanse without telling me and had underling medical problems. >> i think this is a $5 billion industry. i think hollywood and a lot of people love this. they like to feel good about themselves. but unfortunately there is no scientific data behind it to back it up. georgetown university has looked at it in 20 studies and didn't find any medical benefit. having said that there is

something to be said about taking a break for three days or 10 days. what they do is they lose a lot of water. that's what part of the weight loss is and that is what makes them feel better. 60% of the body is water. i came up with my own. i have given you in the past the longevity formula and i will put it on facebook so you can read it. we talked about drinking seven glasses of water a day. that's the best you can do to wash your system. when you exercise you sweat and you get rid of toxins. the best thing to do is eliminate alcohol or limit alcohol and smoking. that's what we talk about and that's what toxins come from. sugar, i am against it. i don't like it. minimize the white sugar you will take and the processed food and the preservatives that is there is a huge problem. that's where you are get august lot of -- a lot of your toxins. these are bad bacteria you find in the colon. one portion of red meat a week i have no problem with. fish is good.
7:55 am
fruits and vegetables is great and juicing. one of the cleansers of juicing is great. don't star of yourself and don't forget -- don't starve yourself. four cups of coffee if you don't have medical issue. i am a fan of coffee because i think anti-oxidents will help you. >> i am a fan. >> two-thirds of everything you take in your body should come from plants. two-thirds. >> you know what, i am not doing two-thirds and i am not going to stick to one -- >> one serving of red meat. >> we will show you how to grill. >> grill vegetables. >> we will be right back.
7:59 am
dwu -- did you grill this weekend? here are tips. >> it is summertime and there is nothing wrong with having a couple times barbecue and enjoying yourself. usually when you do the charcoal and the beef on the grill you create something which puts preservatives into the meat. when you burn it and put charcoal you can put carcinogens in and it can cause cancer. limit the red meat with the charcoal. otherwise enjoy it. >> you are already starting with processed meat with a hot dog or sausage. that already has the nitrates.
8:00 am
and then you add the charing and burning. my advice, wrap your meat when you are grilling. it marinate it which has anti--oxidents and use a lot of vegetables. i love barbecuing eggplant and zucchini and peppers. don't only have hamburgers. >> he has spoken. >> thanks doc. >> see you next week. in the circuit court of the 8 -- 18th judicial circuit the state of florida versus george zimmerman, verdict, we the jury find george zimmerman not guilty. >> new reaction this morning from that verdict last night. andr months of questions, confusion in those three weeks and more of intense courtroom drama as you can see george zimmerman woke up this morning as a free man. last night cleared on all charges in the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon mart.
