everyone who works hard can get ahead. but -- here's the big but. i'm here to tell you today that we are not there yet. we all know that. we are not there yet. we have got more work to do. >> president obama at knox cole negligent illinois on wednesday. this is the exact same place where back in 2005 then senator obama laid out his economic vision for the country. a lot of times you and fellow conservatives like you have said that the media is giving the president a free pass. hay comes out with this speech. he announce as series of speeches about the future of the country. and a lot of the media aren't buying it. i have seen lot of critical headlines. >> you expect charles krauthammer saying he's running

for president again. incomes have steady fallen since the recession ended. you are right. as john nolte pointed out abc news, chuck todd, ben white, dana millbanks, they have all -- i mean, chuck todd called it deja pivot. back to the economy. a lot of cynicism from his base. >> millback with "the washington post," the very fact the president feels the need to talk about bold new aggressive ideas actually shows that he doesn't have any. >> right. it was a very tough column. even msmbc that loves president obama and everything he does was hard-pressed to figure out why he would be dwelling on an issue that clearly doesn't play for him very well since average income has fallen by 4% for the middle class at the -- since the end of the veegs. middle class problem, gap between the rich and poor, which

is so for, you know, reporters just don't like to look at it. >> a look at fox news polls tha. voters asked if the obama administration made the economy better or worse. and dash you know, you can see here we have -- better 43%, worse, 44%. and you can compare those numbers to a year ago this time. and then -- people asked, do you see any signs of the economy has begun to turn the corner and a whopping 57% of people say no. and monica, the president's approval numbers are down as well. also, around 46%, 47%. i wonder if his approval numbers within the media are down as well. >> i'm not sure i would quite go that far. i would love to see his approval numbers in the media. media has been more skeptical about this latest pivot to jobs and the economy because weekly standard did accounts by their count, his 19th pivot. the idea that somehow the president would expect the media as well as the public to go along with the idea that this

19th speech would be different from the previous 18 of what we got was the exact same rhetoric from this president and we have got yes over the last five years. more radical wealth. redistribution. more talk about pair shots and fair deals. i think it falls on deaf ears at this point. it is like the boy that cried wolf. at this point the economy hasn't i am proved. just sort of bubbling along on a plateau. we are month where near the kind of growth that the american engine of economic growth and opportunity should be. i think the american people are feeling this on the ground. media certainly sees this. the danger zone for any president is when the american public tunes them out and the media gets bored with them. as dynamic a character as president obama is, i think he is in that danger zone. >> i don't think that's precisely we are. obama has 3 1/2 years left. number business michigan are up. stock market is up. i applaud the fact he is trying and trying to change the conversation from things somewhat more trivial to things

that matter to the american people. >> i don't want to ignore you, rick. you know, even with all of this critical coverage of the president's economic policies, media is still talking about the republican party and constant attempt to beat down my kind of idea that the president puts out there like it should be surprising that the opposition party would try to put down the president's idea. >> yeah. i was going to bring up the fact that there is one reporter who didn't get the message. and that was jonathon weissman from the new york times. let me read to you his first paragraph above the fold in "the new york times" in the setup piece for the president's speech. he wrote the gop will gut the budget and the sharpest cuts in the generation from the gop, they will hold hostage the budget unless it is stripped. that was the setup. "the new york times" is playing right into the campaign rhetoric of this president. >> how do you see it? >> the coverage of the republican pass versus the

coverage of the president. >> right. again the president suffers from a cynical media that aren't enthusiastic. by a long shot. republicans suffer from relentlessly hostile media that still looks to blame him. ryan williams was highlighting the congressional approval rating and setting it up, that was the republicans' fault. >> monica is there anything the republicans can do to even the playing field a little bit? >> very tough for them. look, they have to come out with a sconsistent pitch. very tough to punch lou especially when you are competing with a president that still despite the skeptical coverage over the last week, still is on the president's side. president blooefts that -- rightfully so, he has this huge megaphone and can try to change the subject by directing the press to cover the latest speech on jobs and economy. it is a distraction. diversionary tactic to keep the

press away. not that they can be covering the irs in benghazi and doj. it is all way to change -- >> wrestle -- hold on, i'm sorry. we are going to have a lot more. quick break. can the media handle the irs scandal? >> he's here. the new prince dominates the coverage and headlines around the world. yet the networks here at home are mum on the widening irs scandal. all business purchases. so you can capture your receipts, and manage them online with jot, the latest app from ink. so you can spend less time doing paperwork. and more time doing paperwork. ink from cha. so you can.

do you think the irs scandal is a phony scandal? >> what we have seen is inappropriate activity the president came out and force reply said he would not tolerate and installed somebody at the irs to take care of. what we have seen from republicans is cherry picked zpogs based on investigations that turns out to be only one side of the story. again and again and again if you look up on capitol hill, when -- chairman issa and others

selectively released zpogs refused to release the full facts. full facts show that the story is quite different. i think you can -- demonstrate it by the way the press has, you know, gotten extremely excited about potential for scandal and dropped it when it has come out. >> jay carney, white house press secretary, talking to joe scarborough on msnbc about the irs scandal claiming the republicans and the press are trying to make something out of nothing. and what about that term phony scandal? >> didn't think it was phony when it came out. he thought it was legitimate and thought the congress and investigators should get to the bottom of it and we can agree that it is a staple we ought to get to the bottom of it. like so many of the scandals, you need to understand the process that got us here. i had a conversation with a reportter other day about gsa. to this day, i don't know and none of us know what happened there. and how it is in the government mindset you can spend millions dollar -- >> the republicans have not been

able to prove the irs scandal reached all the way to the white house and it led to white house targeting conservative groups subpoena that why the media is not covering this more? >> no. i think that -- the republicans have shown that this led to the white house. deputy chief of staff and chief of staff knew about this before they came clean. will's no question about that. you do have people like teef's da -- cnn's dana bash. what they do when they dismiss it they don't get to the bottom of the facts. the atlanta journal constitution this week put forward a little piece of information that shows lee top senior irs officials who work in washington, d.c., they actually live in minneapolis, dallas, and atlanta, and they are billing taxpayers for their travel expenses. will is a scandal unfolding here. we are finding out more details. most of the media are just dismissing it as partisan

mudslinging and they are missing the facts. >> how do you feel? >> i totally agree with the media have not been onboard here. i want to salute peggy noonan for not only sticking with the story and trying to find out what happened but also explaining it in a clearer way that shows that there was white house involvement and there seems to be. we need more investigation into this and it is an uphill battle with the media. >> i wonder, though, jim if there is -- a problem, though with labeling things as scandals when there may -- maybe they are not scandals. i think that everybody has sort of gotten scandal fatigued over the years so they question well, okay, you are calling eight scandal. you are a politician. of course you will call eight scandal. >> fair point. lois lerner took the fifth. that's not a good sign. carter hull, the outgoing irs official, testified that -- linked to washington headquarters. previous segment we said the media were flat on the president's speech. one part they did pick up on

reliably was the part about the phony scandal outlined he played earlier. i think the media said -- that's our excuse now. we are with president obama and jay carney. nothing to see here. media caravan moves on. >> we still don't have clear data on the suggestion by the left they were targeted and some proportional way as well. i want to understand that. >> here is how you know it is an authentic scandal. richard nishgs only the simple fact he talked about and suggested potential use of the irs against one or two political opponents. in this case, the irs was actually used not just in a leak versus an elite way, richard nixon or lyndon johnson, kennedys, one or two elite, the irs was used against broad sections of society. that's what makes this potentially the most dangerous scandal in the u.s. history. the idea that last week when we got all these new revelations according to the media research center, the major broadcast

networks spent 1 1/2 minutes on that when it is going right -- the president of the united states, only cbs covered it 1 1/2 minutes. versus three full days of coverage on the royal baby. that tells you where the media is. >> we have the royal baby coming up later in the show. >> we had richard nixon involved in a coverup. there has been no suggestion -- >> the article of impeachment against nixon was that he suggested, not that he went through it w it, it never happened. in this case it did. >> you can't say that -- >> that's what i was referring to earlier, president obama himself. not yet linked to any of this. plenty more straight ahead including the royal baby. a test of freedom of the press. former congressman anthony betweener who resigned in shame after a sexting scandal is now in the middle of a new one and front-page news. britain's prince george becomes the focus of a media

♪ >> chris: this is author james risen that wrote a book state of war. now, he is been called to testify in the criminal trial of a former c.i.a. official who is charged that he provided classified information that he used. the u.s. court have appeals ruled that risen may not invoke his reporter privilege and keep his source privileged. i am disappointed but i will always protect my sources. judy, no one knows more than

anything you do shield laws. what is your take on your former colleague's situation? >> i grieve for jim. i know what he is going through. i think we have to step back for a moment and look at it. there is really a long road judicially. it's pretty clear that his counsel will request an entire hearing by all of the fourth circuit and all the 12 judges and not just the three which has been roundly condemned as terrible ruling. this is is a ruling that we haven't had enough reporting on the fact that it flies in the face of other circuits, but there is report's privilege when it comes to testifying in a criminal trial. >> rick: it does support of meeting some kind of federal shield law that would cover

the whole country? >> that is not a cure all. would it only set up a balancing test between a government's need to know and reporter's first amendment right. it's not going to solve the problem which is why i think the obama administration is now in of letting a media shield law go forward. >> the washington post and the "new york times" are making this bet because though have been benefiting from leaks from the obama administration. they will not come down hard on an obama administration that is growing after reporters. it's very troublesome to see any administration go after reporters. i think they should go after the leakers. this administration has been going after reporters and not being criticized because the leakers, those reporters that are benefiting from the leaks are the ones that don't want to get anyone in trouble.

>> this case, snowden case, rosen case, and winters case, this is probably the biggest media store of the year even if it's buried in court proceedings. >> rick: more on that story and also this week, mayoral candidate anthony weiner resigned from congress in 2011 after a sexting scandal admitted that online things didn't stop when he accepted down. here is how the new york papers covered it. beat it in the daily news. the coverage of the story and we're hearing the new york media market it's itself nonstop? >> and you can't make it up. from the details of the sordid drama and anthony weiner to the woman he

texted. you can't make it up. she admitted to the screen writers and it's too unbelievable. the coverage of sexting is moving a lot of papers because people find it outrageous. the question is what does it mean for his political future going forward. >> couple of points about the press. first of all there is a new york bias in cable news that is fries frightening. one in san diego where they are accused of significant things. that is important. the second interesting media story is about the timing we're seeing as a performance as a member of congress and as a member of congress it's about zero. >> rick: we'll keep hearing about this story. the general consensus is

reporters camped outside of st. mary's hospital with rumors and speculation running at a fever pitch. with the flash bulbs and frenzy that covered it, william and kate proudly showed them off. there were some complaints from viewers over in great britain. royal subject who were watching the bbc and felt the coverage wag overboard and biased in favor of the monarchy. bbc said over the past few days it's been a lead story for bbc news but editors have taken care of other stories. we are careful in a range of contributions and contributors and opinions across our coverage wlug those that don't support the monarchy. you can't please everybody all the time, good luck to the new parents. looks like a cute little guy. that is wrap on this fox news
