7:31 am
shouldn't eat it? >> so you will never know. you can take cautions at home. we've talked about this before. foodborne illness is really a serious problem in this country. 48 million. this is not a few people. 48 million people are affected by this. 5,000 people die from this. and you know what? fda is only looking at 2% of the food that's coming in this country. so what do you do at home? when you get your fruits and vegetables, number one, make sure if it's a melon or watermelon, scrub them. it sounds a little crazy but you should scrub them. the contamination starts from the farm. farmers may or may not wash their hands. that kind of parasite can get to your food and comes to your kitchen. wash them. now the recommendation is to even dry them up. washing may not be good enough. we've talking about cooking, refrigeration, et cetera. >> let me ask dr. siegel, what are the symptoms and signs? how do you know when it could be this foodborne illness? >> i want to back up for a second and say i agree with something totally david is

7:33 am
for it. when you have it, you can get it treated very early. i as an internist can actually test for it. there's a test in the stool called cyclospora. the number one symptom is diarrhea. it's the small intestine. people get dehydrate. >> what do you take? >> an antibiotic. bactrum. >> kills parasites. >> more important, if you just go to the doctor and test for your stool, that cyclospora study is not going to be part of it. they have to look specifically for that. it's not part of the panel. this will pass. mostly you become dehydrated. make sure you drink. any symptoms go to the hospital. >> produce is grown in one state. gets irrigated, can be contaminated. then it gets packaged and sold in another state. ends up being a nationwide problem. >> wash the vegetables, see the

muscles. endrogenic means it builds up sexual characteristics. men become femme nized over time. women become mas ewe lanized. affects the muscles, heart, increases liver cancer, bad for blood pressure and affects fertility. medically this is a very, very bad idea. i think high school kids out there that are role modeling some of our sports athletes, we're not here to talk about professional athletes, we're here today to talk about the effects on our adolescents. >> if your teen is doing that, coming home and you think he's getting buff and strong and looks good, what do you do? >> you get him in to see the doctor. you question him about it. say, what are you reading? what are you trying to do? by the way, eric, here's a point. parents are just as guilty as kids. because they drive their kids so hard. you're going to make the new york yankees. you know, let's get him started now sfwl dr. samadi, sometimes they say they look good. your message i would assume is

to know right now. >> what you've got to do if you see your child is gaining a lot of weight, becoming bulky, they're going to have acne on their face, acne on their back. there's also their personality is changing. there's a lot of peer pressure. there's some low self-esteem. this is the get away kind of a thing. you have to pay attention. here's the issue we have. i'm not a psychiatrist. if parents are too busy working hard, many hours a day, we're not paying attention to the children -- >> i'm all for the family dinner. but i don't want to blame the parents. i want them to know how to recognize it. are we talking creams, injections, pills. >> injections. >> dr. siegel, what do we look for? >> all three of these things can be used. i want to highlight something dr. colby just said here. effect on mood. it causes depression. causes anxiety. something we call roid rage. they cycle these things. they're going on and off them to try to preserve fertility and not get small testicles. they're going on and off them.

7:44 am
find? what's new on this topic? >> this study actually comes from ucla. they looked at about 51 participants. what they did was they showed the participant different kind of images. some happy ones, some sad ones, some sexual pictures. then they looked at the mri to see if there's any brain activity. we've seen this kind of behavior in the brain when you have gambling problems, when you have alcohol addictions. in this particular study, they are not seeing any kind of activities. that's why this is a huge debate whether sex addiction is a real entity or not. we know that this year it did not make it into the diagnosis of dsm-iii as a real psychiatry issue. the big issue is, is it a real addiction or is it a hypersexuallity. too much libido. that's what the debate is. when you talk about addiction, you're talking about real biologic changes in the brain. something happens when somebody has an alcoholic or gambling

problem. this to me sounds more like obsessive-compulsive behavior with concentration on sex. somebody that has a real problem cannot get away with it. just like the obsessive person keeps going at it. these are people that may spend a lot of money. they know they have a problem. what's interesting? sometimes when they get caught, they're almost happy that they're through their misery. it's a very deep psychiatric issue. but i'm not sure if it's a real addiction. >> for people who know someone who have it themselves, what is the treatment, dr. siegel? >> i want to add to it something david is saying. a doctor out of ucla who's been the lead researcher here says that basically what she's looking at is the kind of addiction you might see with cocaine or other illicit substances. heroine. is it like that? we do know there are people that are hypersexual. people with very high libidos. we do know people may do things out of sexual desire that ruins their lives. they may end up getting divorced. may end up with all types of problems. what this study did is it found

that the brain waves didn't change the way you would expect them to change, jamie, if it was like a cocaine addiction. there's no habituation. what does this mean? this means that there probably isn't the same need. if this study bears out, there isn't the same need to treat this like it was a cocaine addiction. like it was an alcohol addiction. you may have to just look at it like some people are more -- >> before we go, can you treat it by adjujusting libido with medications? >> you may be able to do it with behavioral change. >> one on one counseling. >> we're up against a hard break. we have much more on the other side you won't miss. meanwhile, an american naval vessel is starting a new life as a floating museum. the problem is the "u.s.s. pueblo" won't be receiving any visitors from the u.s.
