[ applause ] >> great audience. welcome to huckabee from fox news studios in new york city. theories as to the problems in the republican party are as numerous as possible murder suspects in an old black and white episode of perry mason. this week, the fight broke open between new jersey governor chris christie and senator rand paul over christie's contempt for paul's libertarian leaning views. i'm sure some pundits are going to say well, it is juexample of. we hear the party is in trouble because republicans refuse to abandon their pro-life plan, or because they won't officially embrace same-sex marriage. some say it is because they won't accept an immigration reform scheme currently passed through the senate. or it is because they wouldn't

shred the second amendment and pass some lame feel good legislation that wouldn't stopped the crimes it was designed to prevent. others say it is because they oppose obama care, because they didn't stop sequestration by giving in to the things the democrats wanted. republicans, well, may have lost their way, but it is not because they won't move to the left to become nothing more than a calorie free version of democrat, but it is because they've forgotten to respect and reach out to the people who really make this country work. by the way, it is not the guys incident expensive suits in the corner office with the great view. my wife and i were in boston recently, we went to fenway, america's greatest baseball park. it is 101 years old. may not be as fancy as newer ones, but it has class, and it is a shrine to america's past time. i took some photos of people who, well, i think are as important to the experience as the athletes who get paid

millions to be on the field. these are the guys that carry heavy things up and down the stairs in the heat of the day for hours. they're on their feet the entire time. they work hard for their money. and to most people, they're just a distraction, maybe an obstruction to seeing the game. i see those guys and i see what makes america great. people working hard and sweating to earn a living so one day they can sit in those seats rather than hall hot dogs, peanuts, beverages up to them. people who lay brick have a gift. i value the people that work with their hands and can do things i can't do. i can't fix a water faucet. i can't wire a house or fix a car or an air conditioner. and the people who can are valuable. i've never played golf, but i have as much appreciation for the people that tend the grounds as those who drive the carts. republicans need to attract people from the boys and girls

clubs, not just the country clubs. they need to communicate why big government and high taxes hurts the guy building the skyscraper, not just the one that owns it. why educational choice gives the children of working single moms the same opportunities as kids going to the finest private schools. they need to explain why failed energy policies of democrats are costing them at the gas pump and in their electric bills. i grew up having a lot more in common with the people working in the kitchen instead of those at the head table. to be honest with you, i had to learn how to sit at the head table. i knew how to clean up with the banquet was over. you explain to the wait staff at the gop fund-raiser how you're going to help them, you won't have to worry about the people that pay $10,000 for their ticket. don't begrudge the underemployed family getting food stamps, then justify bailouts for aig, goldman, sachs and gm. the problem with the gop, not

because it is pro-life, pro-marriage, or that it is too conservative, it is convincing the masses and majority that they aren't invisible. [ applause ] president obama has been in office almost five years now, and this week for the 19th time in his presidency he's turning his attention to the economy. in other words, after five years, 18 tries, the economy is still weak. that's not even the shocking news. the shocking news is that president obama in making his latest economic speech had the gall to say this. >> with this endless parade of distractions and political posturing and phony scandals, washington has taken its eye off the ball. and i'm here to say this needs to stop. this needs to stop. >> you know, those phony scandals like benghazi and how

found george zimmerman not guilty. that is not an important topic of national concern. it was beneath the office of the president, and frankly like you said, why haven't we been talking about jobs and the economy the last five years? >> he keeps talking about a laser that he needs to put the focus on. obviously the laser is out of batteries or something. >> the thing is, his latest pivot, as you said, he is pivoting, spreading in circles the past five years, but the latest pivot is because his poll numbers are plummeting. he lost nine points since april. and it is all due to phony scandals as he calls them. people have obama fatigue at this point. they're tired of this. every week it is something else. it is another abuse of power. so his numbers are falling because he is not -- he is trying to say the polls show 56% of americans disapprove his performance on the economy. >> go ahead. >> i was going to say i agree with everything emily said. it is poll numbers below 50%, like emily said, and i would

police agent speak that i always supported and still do, but they're becoming militaristic. how widespread is this? >> very widespread. there were 3,000 so-called s.w.a.t. team raids, 80,000 now, the increase is dramatic. what happened in the early 1980s, the pentagon started handing out free equipment to 17,000 police agencies across the country, you're talking about peace makers that have tour its, assault vehicles, armor for policemen. assault rifles, black hawk helicopters, police agencies with 50 officers with black hawk helicopters now. what's happened, they militarized the police, and the police as some army officers told me, once you put that gear on and you've got someone wearing masks now, pretty far out, that's what they do in afghanistan, you can't see who you're up against, they become the military, it is not like the peace officer that would say sir, here is a warrant, i would

like to talk to you. >> isn't officer o'toole with his club saying hi to the kids. >> they have tasers, assault rifles, shoot the dogs first. i have seen some raids, it is awful. a young girl, seven years old in detroit, two years ago asleep on the couch. in storms the guys in the middle of the night, one of the officers guns go off, shoot her, kill her, princess blanket top of her. her dad comes out, what's happened, slam him face down. the guy they were looking for was -- >> wrong house. >> wrong house. >> what happens to the police agency and to responsible parties when they do this? >> most people sue. that case is on-going now. the courts basically ruled most police officers have qualified entry. the courts, it is difficult. you get damages against police officers, guess who pays the bill, taxpayer. of course. those things are going on.

a case in arizona, ex-marine, bang. 3:00 a.m. in the morning, door goes down, wife starts screaming, takes his wife and child, puts them in the closet. he stands at the end of the hallway with a hunting rifle. the police enter the scene, 90 rounds are fired, 60 hit him. he falls down. they wouldn't let the medics take care of him. he bled to death on his own floor. the police claim he shot them. investigation shows case never came off the weapon. those are the cases, shocking. as a civil libertarian, i been in this 40 years, this is a trend if we don't reverse, i am creeped out i say and worried. >> i think we all ought to be. i want to talk to you more when we come back. when we do, i am going to ask john if there's a way to stop militarization of police departments across the country. what can you do to protect yourself. we'll be right back. in the first 24 hours. but not just any cold. i only use new thermacare® cold wraps.

live from america's news headquarters, i am harris faulkner. the death toll in last week's train crash in spain has risen to 79. local reports, the latest victim is an american woman. the driver of the train is expected to be charged with multiple cases of negligent homicide. he has been released without bail at this point and must appear in court once a week. investigators are trying to decide if he is solely to blame, and also looking at the track's emergency safety system. pope francis is on his way to the vatican after a week-long trip to brazil. more than 3 million packed the beach to see him before his departure. the crowd so big, some pilgrims waded into the water to hear him

conversation and they won't. >> paul's office shot back friday, saying, and i quote, if governor christie believes the constitutional rights and privacy of all americans is esoteric, he either needs a new dictionary or he needs to talk to more americans because a great number of them are concerned about the dramatic overreach of our government in recent years. well, i could say boys will be boys, but this is a legitimate debate to have, but i am always uncomfortable when republicans are attacking other republicans. looks like there would be plenty of us to at least agree on and disagree with the people who believe that big government, more taxes, and more trampling on all our constitutional rights are a bigger burden than the nuances in the republican party itself. just my thought. this week, egyptian authorities arrested and detained mohammed morsi over accusations he ordered killing of soldiers and

conspired with terrorist groups. if you remember, morsi's new government received the support of the obama administration when he took office after the arab spring of 2011. egypt's new government has not received similar backing from the white house. egyptian born pastor michael yu self told us how people in his home land feel about our president as well as ambassador to their country that he appointed. >> you see the signs in tahrir square of obama and ambassador patterson, with a red x on them. shown to congress. and they literally want nothing to do with this administration. they say to american people, until you change the administration, don't have any dealing with us here in egypt. we don't want your money, we don't want your aid. >> dr. youssef is a leading pastor in atlanta, georgia, church of the apostles, a significant church. he is one of the leading voices

therapist, host of couples therapy on vh-1, dr. jen berman. i want to talk about these guys, but first, what is it about these men that would cause young, attractive women to be interested in these married men who are older than their fathers. >> first of all, power, money, and fame are highly seductive. one of the things that's really interesting, as you probably know, nick richie of the dirty.com wrote this story. he was on season two, i talked to himt quite a bit yesterday. one thing he shared after interviewing this woman for hours and hours and days and months is there was a grooming process, this is a guy who really was very seductive. he knows how to seduce women. he really looked for someone who was kind of turned on by sort of

his sexual prowess, and his political prowess. then it became sexual. she wasn't into the sexual part at first, she was like i just want to talk politics with this guy. but he knew how to go there, he is an experienced predator. >> that's the point. is this more than just a dirty old man? is he sick? is this some compulsion he has, a sex addict? >> whether you call it an addiction or a compulsion, this is someone who is very troubled. i would say this is highly compulsive behavior, and when you are someone that's willing to do something that goes against what appear to be your morals, your ethics and values, made vows to his wife, you're willing to do something that can cost you everything, your marriage, your career, that's a sign of compulsivity. >> in terms of costing him something, he has a son. one day he will agree grow up,

pictures will be there for the kid to see. >> when you look at the effect on the kids, look at two parts. when he is old enough to google, how embarrassing. to me, that's the least of the problem. when you have a parent acting in a compulsive, addictive way, compulsivity exists, intimacy can't exist. when you're acting out like that, you're not emotionally present for your child, your marriage, or anyone else. >> what makes men in positions, whether eliot spitzer, mark sanford, anthony weiner, what makes them think they're going to get away with it? these are people easily recognized. >> narcissism is the key. [ applause ] >> all due respect, but a lot of powerful male politicians have very narcissistic personality disorders, then also what end up happening is that they're surrounded by people that cover for them, who yes them.

so they don't have to deal with the consequences of their actions, then it explodes, it mushrooms. >> how does a person who has become the butt of every late night comedian, joke of the front page of every tabloid in new york city, how does that person continue to go out there with a big smile on his face and proudly walk through neighborhoods saying vote for me. i don't get that. i would be running and hiding somewhere i think. >> one, it is his livelihood, two, what got him in this mess, he has a sense of i am invincible. he is thinking this will pass, i got away with it the first time, eventually i will get away with it with this. my wife is standing by my side, eventually the public will come around, they did last time. >> i feel sorry for his wife. huma is really a very accomplished person and very well educated person. has everything going for her. she is standing by him, and there's a part of me says gee, i want marriages to stay together, that's always the first hope

that people will work it out. but is she kidding herself to think that he's really cured? he said he was, went through all this before, said i'm cured, i've gotten therapy, you know, i'm sorry, i'm not going to do this, and he's doing it all the time. >> he said that, and he acted out. i would be shocked this is the only woman, given the level of impulsivity. it is easy from the outside to judge. i know there's been a lot of criticism of her, she has political aspirations, but i think when you have a family and child with someone, you want to forgive. you want to move past it. you want to keep your family together, keep them intact. and especially if you have a spouse that shows remorse, which he initially did. but when you ask can this be cured, can this be helped, yes. i base my livelihood on the belief people can change, but it requires tremendous therapy, sometimes a 12 step program,

always like the partridge family. >> well, life isn't always pretty for everybody. fortunately, i feel, you know, in my heart, that i've had an incredible life. i really do. even though there were some moments that were not good, but the two men i married, i would have married over again. even though i talk a lot about jack in the book and the problems i had with him, but i never would have done it any other way. jack cassidy, my first husband and the father of my sons. and 12 grandchildren now. >> wow. >> not the grandchildren. unless they're old enough. my oldest granddaughter is 33, so she'll probably read the book and tell me a lot what shelves, but i think it's all going to be good. >> there's one, to me, very powerful story. you talk about relationship with the cast of the partridge family. so many people know you from

that. i know you perhaps even more from many of the musicals. i still think of you as mary and the librarian and the music man. >> i'm going to be doing that next year with my son. patrick and i are taking it out on the road and doing a concert version. he's playing the lead. i'll show clips, talk about the movie and talk about being pregnant with him while filming. >> but you talked about the relationship you had with the cast and i loved the relationship you had with danny bonaduce, who has has his troubles, but you still keep in touch with him. >> of course. he was like my own son during the time. he didn't have a very good home life, so every other weekend, i'd take him to my house to be with my kids. he sort of became part of my family. when he was doing the wrong thing, i'd call him and give him hell like i did my kids.
