all over the navy yard massacre in washington. and some the liberal press used the murders to advance their antigun agenda. awful. but not only that they were wrong in what they reported. >> we are reporting here at cnn just this hour that an ar-15 used in some of those recent horrific mass shootings was used again in this one. >> sources say with that assault rifle, which we believe to be an ar-15. alexis, essentially was a sniper. >> how does a guy walk into a facility like that with an ar-15. a double-barreled shotgun and handgun and go unnoticed? >> the ar-15 that was used today was used in newtown, was used in aurora, and used in almost all of the mass shootings in the last two years or so in america. >> bill: i don't know how that happens. but when the media erroneously reports something, instead of checking it out, some ideological politicians jump to exploit the fall columbusy.

the killer got the assault rifle into the navy board. he didn't do that "new york times" and "new york times" also referenced the ar-15 falsely. everybody makes mistakes. this was coordinated effort. kind of hysterical reaction. there is no question the american media is opposing the majority of americans over the second amendment. the reason is most journalists live in secure places. here in new york city, many press people live in high rise apartment buildings protected from intruders. but most americans don't have the money to do that. so they must protect themselves. that's why the founding fathers put the second amendment into the constitution. self-protection. once again, when americans lose their lives, to violent crime, that situation should never ever be exploited for political gain. and that's the memo. now for the top story tonight, reaction, joining us from washington, howard kurtz host of the brand new program here on 00 fox news channel called media buzz. so where am i going wrong, howard? >> well, bill, you are
1:05 am
obviously right this was a terrible blunder by the mainstream media, including fox. and that we have seen this too many times with mass shootings and mass tragedies where journalists take half baked information from law enforcement sources, report it as fact, and it turns out not to be true. but, i don't think and certainly you are right that pierce morgan at cnn and others are crusaders on the gun control issue. i certainly don't think it's fair to say that all of the mainstream media are comprised of people who are mainstream fanatics. >> are you kidding me? didn't you just not hear every major network, all right, all the newspapers, i mean, am i ha lewisating here? they all jumped on the ar 15. they all linked it to colorado and to connecticut. all of them did the same thing it was like one guy writing a script from all of them. and you are going to sit there and tell me that this isn't a coordinated effort? >> if you are basing your reports on the erroneous information that there was an ar 15 assault weapon. >> it's what they did with

the information. you just referenced fox made the mistake. but fox didn't reference it that way. we weren't coming out saying this outrageous another assault rifle used in mass killing. it wasn't seized upon to push an agenda. surely you see the agenda. >> well, if a journalist asks how in the world did aaron alexis get an automatic weapon into a protected military base. >> that's a legitimate question but that's a different question. >> but it was always preferenced by here we go again. all right. here's another rifle and a mad man with a rifle. and the reason it was preferenced that way was to whip up feeling against the second amendment. surely you know that. >> i think many people in the press believe there should be a reasonable and robust debate about gun control. we saw that particularly. >> we have already had the debate, howard. already had it. >> already had the debate.

>> bill: washington beat segment tonight, two inside stories buzz in d.c. that some in the democratic party are disappointed president obama's reaction to the navy yard massacre. and the web site politico says the president is in deep trouble job wise. joining us now from d.c. ace reporters james rosen and carl cameron. karl, you are going to kick off. tell me about the democratic party in the navy yard. >> i will start what's happening on the hill as it relates to all of that families of victims of gun violence are fanning out all over the capitol today pushing lawmakers to take another shot at gun control and background checks and basically getting nowhere. a lot of democrats think the president's condemnation of this week's navy yard attack was weak because it didn't renew the push for federal gun control and background checks. after the newtown shooting the president pushed for legislation but we all know it stalled in the senate. this week gun control advocates have gotten the message from the administration that there is not going to be a renewed push and frankly the left expected more from their president and they

resented-snroi. >> president didn't do what the media did. take it even though it was erroneous and try run with it to try to rekindle. >> a lot of the of liberals think he should interest done more and been more aggressive. some think he has been scared off by what happened in colorado where a pair of democratic state lawmakers lost their recall elections recently and ousted for pushing gun control laws. >> president's power declining according to politico he is in trouble on the job. doesn't have credibility. can't rally the folks does that tie into. this absolutely. they took a whole month off in august didn't deal with the budget issues that are grinding washington to a halt. when they came back, first we had syria. that raised some questions about the president's foreign policy. this week, we have a huge violent act on a military base here in d.c. and liberals think that the president has not been aggressive enough calling for gun control action. they see this as his eroding muscle rhetorically and in policy and politically with lawmakers on capitol hill. the idea being that he is getting lamer as ducks go over passing week.
1:15 am
>> let's go over to rosen now on the fallout from syria. what you can tell us about that? >> well, of course, we are at a point right now where we are waiting to see if bashar al assad is going to make a full and candid declaration of chemical stockpiles as agreement negotiated between the u.s. and russians representing the syrians calls for him to do. it's a pause period during which we are seeing secretary of state kerry particularly but other administration officials try to do something ex post facto that's a fancy latin term that means after the fact. what they are trying to do is assert that the kind of bumpy, messy, sometimes utterly incoherent road that got us to this point which could turn out to be a good place. we could actually potentially see the chemical weapons stockpiles in syria dismantled. the jury is out on that. we don't know if that's going to harassment everyone knows in washington that it was a very incoherent and kind of decision-making process that got us to this point and ex post facto kerr i can't understand others are
1:16 am
trying to suggest that no, no, no. >> bill: no, it was all planned. we already planned from the beginning. the fact remains that they don't have any plan right now as you confronted the state department specsman, rosen, with. roll the tape. >> we think clearly there will be a response and i don't think i want to go any further on that on potential diplomatic outreach. not to my knowledge, nothing planned to my knowledge. >> no ultimatum has been present to the assad regime prior to the commencement of such a response? >> well, the response, the decision hasn't been made yet. >> but no ultimatum has been presented to the regime as far as you know. >> not to my knowledge, no. >> all right. so they basically haven't done anything to assad, they made the united states and russia made the deal. but assad, he hasn't been consulted or anything. i guess he said maybe i will do it. but, there is no clarity or clarification of anything, rosen, is there? >> bill, the important part about that exchange with the state department spokeswoman marie harp that you just played. that was on august 29.
1:17 am
what she was basically saying was she haven't made any outreach through the russians or any place else to syria look i either turn over chemical weapons or you will get bombed. >> the same thing remains true today on september 18th. there is still no assad hasn't told anybody what -- yeah, maybe i will give them up. yeah, yeah. that sounds like a good idea. there is no facts. >> secretary kerry last week was asked in london and sort of answered in a very off handed way if there was anything syria could do to stop these strikes from going forward? they said well they could turn over all their chemical weapons in a week. they are not going to do that and it can't happen. since that time there has been concerted effort by secretary kerry to say, no, no, no. no i meant what i said in london, the russians picked up on it in fact, we have been talking about this for over a year. this was all really very smooth and sort of a very well thought out process that we have been applying all along, and i have said privately to folks here and all the way to the top
1:18 am
that, you know, it's not just fox news or the right wing blogs or rush limbaugh who are saying that this was a very messy incoherent process, decision-making process that has left our allies unnerved, it's also democrats. when you confront the top echelons of this administration without thinking they don't really want to hear it. >> bill: do you know any democrats that believe they didn't get anything from assad at all, it's all a fuzzy mask? do you know name anybody. namem not going to that i them because i have had these discussions off the record. >> bill: off the record, rosen. >> i can tell you, bill, that a lot of democrats and a lot of our overseas allies were unnerved by the way these decisions were rolled out and seemingly changed and the messaging being inconsistent kerry on one day saying it's going to be unbelievablably small action and the president says we don't do pinpricks and so forth. this has been a problem for them but expost facto. >> don't confuse us with the foreign language.
1:19 am
i want you when you talk to the state department o'reilly doesn't believe you have any deal with assad to do anything. is he wrong? >> you know what they will say? they will say who? just kidding. >> bill: they might. they are that out of touch, rosen. that's how out of touch they are. all right, gentlemen. directly ahead. grand theft auto. a huge violent video game that millions of people play. the navy yard killer also played video games. we will show you what's going on in that arena. women more unrestrained than men. yes they are. those reports after these messages.

apparently played violent video games almost every night according to his friends. this week a violent video game called grand theft auto was released to the public. $800 million in one day was spent on this game. and part of the attraction of the game are are torture scenes where the player participates in the torture. joining us now from philadelphia dr. chuck williams who teaches psychology at drexel university. you study these violent video games. what's your conclusion, doctor? >> well, first of all, thanks for having me on again, bill. look, the research is pretty clear. we have data to show that there is some negative impact from having people consistently consume violent media. both kids and adults. we have longitudinal studies that go back decades. for example, we have watched kids when he were 8 or 9 years old who for example watched tv shows like the dukes of hazard then we followed them through adulthood, middle age and we saw, for example, the kids who
1:24 am
watched more tv shows like that when they became adults they had more run-ins with the law, for example. the data has been pretty strong and it's been pretty clear for a number of years. >> what about the video game component? is that more intense than television shows like the dukes of hazard which to me was a mindless, harmless program. so i mean, i can't contradict the study but i can tell you as a kid i watched the westerns and the army shows and those kinds of things, and maybe, maybe it affected me but i don't have a record. i have never been arrested. i have never punked anybody. so you know, it's hard for me to buy that but i want to know about these very intense video games because i think it's a different ballgame now. >> you are absolutely right. what people have to realize is that unlike watching a television show, unlike watching a movie, what happens is you're actually engaging in simulated acts of violence. you are learning how to be violent. people also have to
1:25 am
remember that some of the same technology that we may find in violent video games we use to train navy seals, for example. and law enforcement officers. they use the same type of technology to go through simulated exercises to rescue hostages or to take down people like bin laden. so people have to understand that the difference between, say, a tv show and a video game with a tv show you are not acting it out with a video game not only are you acting it out, bill, but you are being rewarded for being violent. >> and you are involved. isn't it true that a schizophrenic personality, a psychotic personality, maybe this does light a fuse for those people. what about the 8, 9, 10, 11-year-old who's are playing it. are they going to become violent by playing grand auto theft and halo and these games? >> yes. in fact, they are. >> these kids are going to become violent. >> really. >> think back when you were younger if you can think
1:26 am
back that far, bill. i can think bank when i was younger i would watch wrestling, right? what would i do in between the commercials i would play smack down with my brothers and even my sister. >> try to dislocate somebody's shoulder like killer. >> violent. by parental came home separated on punishment. >> little boy though. it's almost like a bear cub, you are going to do that kind of thing. i'm very interested in this. i know a lot of little kids who are playing these games. they are night little kids and he they're not going out and hurting anyone now. >> see, that's not true, bill. they are hurting. he they are hurting their brothers and sisters, they are hurting themselves but it's not serious. don't get me wrong. if kids watch very hyperactive intense play, whether it's a video game, a movie or tv show, based upon research, they are likely to act that out. in play. which can be violent. the difference here is that if there are mental health impairments, it can push them over the edge.
1:27 am
it can. i'm not saying it definitely can happen but it can. >> all right, doctor, very provocative. we appreciate you coming on tonight. american women under pressure. do they become more aggressive than men? we'll talk about a new study with kirsten powers. miller assessing president obama's job performance and answering this question. is the national football league too violent? we hope you stay tuned to those reports.
