"fox & friends" starts right now. beep, beep. and how perfect did that lawn look, too? the homeowner was out there probably with scissors. >> i wonder why they are bankrupt? >> well, they are not saving money on gas. can you see that hello, everyone, welcome to "fox & friends" on this saturday morning. feels like an indian summer here in new york. is that the accurate term indian summer? >> i think that is that is not the case in the rest of the country. >> we have got some extreme weather, don't we? we have our rick reichmuth coming in here. 15 people hurt after a tornado slammed through the great plains. multiple tornadoes, one of

them a mile wide spotted in nebraska, south dakota. >> the latest coming out of wayne, nebraska. they counted 17 possible twisters yesterday. only six have been confirmed so far. >> this is the same system that dumped 33 inches of snow? south dakota, killing three people. for more we can look at today check in with rick reichmuth. hey, rick. >> all of that going on. snow on one side of the storm. severe weather on the other. tropical storm i'm going to tell you about as well. wayne, nebraska was the town that took the brunt of that from the tornado at least most of the damage because the tornado went right through nebraska. northeastern nebraska. very oddly. these are are a bunch of little towns. all of these towns dotted across the areas have anywhere from 300 to about 1,000 people from that norfolk over towards sioux city area. eventually went on either side of sioux city tonight. a lot of damage in there.

we are very fortunate fatalities at this point. that is certainly great news. that storm continues to pull off towards the east. you see where that yellow is there anywhere from around milwaukee to madison to wisconsin tells and alls way down into arkansas the threat for severe weather today. i think maybe an isolated tornado or two. yesterday we had the large destructive tornadoes. i don't think that's what we're looking at today. probably more damaging winds and little bit of hail with it it still snow on the back side of this storm. maybe another 3 to 5 inches a few spots across south dakota and north dakota. the heaviest of the snow that fell is gone. this right here is the other story talking about this week. this is tropical storm karen and barely tropical storm. we had thought this potentially had some chance to strength maybe to a hurricane before making landfall. that is out of question at this point. you see you all of that energy there. no activity going on at the center. you have to have those two things come together. to have any significant storm going on here.

you will see this continue to pull off to the east. getting battered with waves. not really anything in the way of storm surge. see some areas maybe two to three inches of rain. nothing that's going to cause any big impacts in across the gulf. that's good news. another tropical system without having big impact. >> was i right about the indian summer? doesn't it come after like your first big frost? >> i don't know the answer to that question. i don't know if -- you know. >> somebody call google or wikipedia quick. >> we will call the chief meteorologist and find out. wife and daughter looking on. police are hoping these photos can help identify more of the bikers involved. we are also learning that at least one undercover cop was a part of the motorcycle gang but he didn't intervene because he said he didn't want to blow his cover. last night, the man you see smashing his helmet 38-year-old reginald chance turned himself in to police and is now in custody. well, gitmo prisoner now a free man because is he considered no threat? ebrahim was captured with al qaeda fighters in 2001 and sent to guantanamo bay. he suffers from schizophrenia and diabetes. after more than a decade behind bars he has been released because officials say he is too sick to be a threat. he reportedly will return to his native sudan. and a fugitive witness wanted for getting in the aaron hernandez murder case is captured by u.s. marshals. alexander bradley appeared in court friday after being

found at his girlfriend's home earlier in the day. he split town this summer before testifying about a double homicide case linked to the former football player. bradley is the same man that filed a lawsuit against hernandez for allegedly shooting him in the face outside of a nightclub in february. long lost work of leonardo da vinci was found. pulled from a swiss bank vault from 200 other workers. appears to it be a complete version of pencil sketch. believe the paint something one of da vinci's master pieces but further analysis still needs to be done. will this be be the new mona lisa. >> i love how these people find this stuff in their attics. grandma just handed this down. >> unbelievable. >> today is day five of the government shut jowp and

thousands of federal workers are out of work and the blame game continues. are we getting any closer to a deal? the house was at work yesterday passing some small spending bills to fund the government agencies. today, another rare weekend session is scheduled. >> elizabeth prann is live in washington with the very latest for us. elizabeth, what is going on'? >> well, lots going on. the back and forth which started the week is ending the week in which really no clear resolution. the outside strategy on this current crisis has been passing smaller funding bills that would make it difficult for any lawmakers to oppose really. they voted on half a dozen this week alone. two of those past. one bill would open fema and national weather service ahead of that tropical storm. another would fund nutrition services for women and children in poverty. the white house has threatened to veto those measures. they say they want to force speaker john boehner and the house leadership to pass a clean stop gap funding bill. speaker boehner says he won't let the nation default. he also said he wasn't planning to just add to the country's debt. today, the house is due to

vote to make sure federal workers get become pay after this is all over. the white house has said that they do support it, but we will certainly see how they act. tucker, anna, clayton, pack to you guys. >> thanks a lot. elizabeth prann for us in wught. americans are united on one thing. they are disgusted with the behavior of the federal government. the white house trying to blame republicans. republicans blaming the white house for the shutdown. people across the country believe it's both their faults. >> they are not even discussing tactics right now. it's all about process. who is not talking to who. you are not talking to me. i'm not talking to you. we can't even get on the phone. the president yesterday using pretty heated rhetoric. john boehner firing back about some things he is hearing as he will. take a listen. >> when it comes to negotiations, i said i am happy to have negotiations with the republicans and speaker boehner on a whole range of issues. but we can't do it with a gun held to the head of the american people.

>> >> this morning i get the "wall street journal" out. it says we don't care how long this lasts because we are winning. this isn't some damn game. the american people don't want their government shutdown and neither do i. >> it seems that the initial thinking from both sides really was that this potential shutdown, when it was just a potential shutdown would hurt the g.o.p. more than it would hurt democrats. but it doesn't seem like that necessarily is really the case. isn't the president supposed to be the adult in the room? the adult at the table between all of these bickering factions and at some point it seems that the american people are going to get fed up and think that the president is the big figure head of the united states government and a symbol of everything going on in washington so those poll numbers may continue to plummet. we do want to show you a fox news poll over what the american people are thinking. who was responsible for this shutdown. republicans like boehner? well, 25%. president obama 24%.

tea partiers like cruz 17%. democrats like reid 8%. everybody 20%. so nobody is really winning here. >> a little background on what the speaker of the house was referring to he had the "wall street journal" in his hand. "wall street journal" piece came out. they quoted unnamed white house source saying we don't mind how long this goes on because we are winning. the white house has denied saying that, but it's demonstrablably true it's clearly how the president feels. the longer this goes on, the better it is for the white house. that's one of the reasons they have been consistently torquing up the pressure, punishing the american people, closing down jogging paths. spending more money to shut it down than it would take to keep it going. >> don't you think that eventually it's going to make his poll numbers plummet? is he not the big figure head in washington? is he not the one that is supposed to be the adult in the room. >> the whole point from the white house point of view is to make this as painful as they possibly make it going out of their way to

punish the american people with the hope that republicans will be blamed. make no mistake their strategy is to hurt the public with this government shutdown. >> they learned something from 2011 when they negotiated with republicans. i don't think i have ever seen the white house this firm on anything. they have been absolutely firm. we are not going to negotiate with republicans at all on this. things are getting hurt too. you mentioned national parks and running paths. we saw what happened with the world war ii memorial this week. you remember when a couple members of congress came down there with some of the members of the greatest generation to try to go to this open air memorial. this world war ii memorial. and some park rangers were saying you can't come in here. i'm sorry, you can't come in here. well this now, they are adding a wire around the outside of this thing to make sure that people don't try to break through. this happened last night on greta. take a listen. >> we're going to break that down. >> they are not going to stop you? >> huh-uh, no way. nothing else did. >> what do you make of this fence around the world war ii memorial with a sign that says closed?

all right, clayton, over to you. >> thanks, anna. government shutdowns and economic uncertainty no wonder we are all stressed why does it seem some have the capability to remain happy overall and others have a black cloud is it genetic or permanent shift to make it happier. joining us the author of the new book before happiness number two on the "new york times" best seller list right now. good to see you, sean, congratulations. >> thank you very much. >> that will make you happy. >> true. >> are we genetically redisdisposed to stay happy. we have pattern in our makeup room. she comes in smiling, happy, every day. how does she pull that off? is she faking it? >> right. for some people happiness is an easier choice than it is for other people that their genes make it easy to become positive. what we found that is amazing though. while genes set the initial baseline levels of happiness, there is a will the of things we can do to it ching our levels of happiness. we see identical twins,

same genes, but have completely different visions of the world. levels of happiness, their personality trait. >> the research you have done in this book is remarkable and i read it cover to cover this week. i want to encourage everyone to go out and pick it up. why some people remain happy in the midst of chaos and others seem to to weather it how does that happen? >> so much that's out of our control right now with what's going on in the world and our families. what we found is one thing that is within our control is our ability to respond to the world. we did a study published in the top psychology journal that we did with two researchers from yale, alli crumb and peter and we went in and looked at how people perceived vets. and if people see stress as just bad for them which is what we normally tell people, stress is related to the 10 leading causes of death and disease. if we can change minds. what is going on in the world as a challenge instead of as a threat it turns out stress levels remain the same. headaches, back jane and fatigue drop by 23%.

productivity jumped by 30%. some of the practical tips i like in your book simple to do. not all of these changes but just simple things. write a two minute email each day praising someone or thanking someone you know. why do that? >> what it does as you are doing. this you are getting control back over the world. you have creative a positive change for somebody else. it also deepens your social connection that you feel with other people which ♪ only the greatest predictor of happiness. your social support is as predictive as how long you will live as obesity, high pressure and smoking. we know how powerful the negative is and what we are trying to teach people how powerful even two minutes a foive might be. >> i tried doing this and you are right about. this another thing about journaling, write two minutes a day about a meaningful experience you had. like going to bed at night saying i'm thankful nor and puts a good spin on for a day it? >> is. one step further. write down every detail about what you remember for that one experience for two minutes. you are trying to relive that experience in your brain. your brain can't tell the difference between

visualization and actual experience. the reason that's important is as you journal, you double the meaningful experience. you just reexperience it. and it turns out it's one of the most powerful ways of getting people to realize there so much meaning already embedded in our lives. >> i like this when you write down checklist of to do task. write down things you have already accomplished. i have already gone to the dry cleaner and i put that in my to do list. >> i wrote down that i wrote a checklist so i can can immediately check of it o your brain accelerators towards goals when you see progress, when we set resolutions and talk about our day. talking about all the things we haven't done yet. what turns your brain on to the highest level is seeing you have made progress. check those off and speed you towards those goals. >> go out and pick up this book. called "before happiness" grab it on amazon and kindle. great to see you. >> thanks for having me. >> obama care one week old. web site already down for repairs. you might need this

come to us. and you know, when we met him, we just fell allove with greg. nina are so nice. they are humble. >> you think i see this stuff on tv all the time. is this really happening? >> exactly. that's why this was great. they allowed me to scene and pick out everything involved. >> the open floor plan just itself is going to be a lot easier for me to get around in my wheelchair. >> how is this elevator. >> especially when i get older. i will be in this house the rest of my life. right now anytime a small bathroom when i wanted to bathe. i use the bathroom. i have to wheel to the door and my wheelchair doesn't fit in the door i have to lock my wheelchair, get on the ground and crawl to either the tub. >> kind of do a combat roll to get in there huh? >> do a combat roll into the tub and i bathe on the tub floor. i will wheel myself in here and transfer from my wheelchair to the bench and i will be able to shower. >> greg is a hometown hero.

>> greg is definitely a hometown hero. i had no idea how many people knew greg before i got involved with the project. >> the least we could have done to give back to him to help. >> building house for heros relies on volunteers like this to donate the elbow grease and big corporations to donate the supplies. >> just to say thank you for what you have done for our country and thank you for your sacrifice. >> sergeant karen put me to work. >> when you see this and all the volunteers working and they are sweating and they are, you know, they are getting dirty, what does that mean to you? >> makes me want to get involved in it too. >> he would probably going to start another home in connecticut in the next three to six months. he wants to be the general contractor on the project. it's a huge undertaking. these guys come home charged up and full of energy. do something not just a job but something meaningful to help their brothers and sisters in arms it's a home run. >> it's coming full circle. he will get involved and starts helping them build

we don't look into each other's eyes. >> rick's neck has been killing him for months. >> it has been actually. you made me realize this is what is it going on. >> extreme weather to get to. incredible videos posted massive tornado in wayne nebraska. wayne getting the most damage yesterday as a massive storm system really packed over the great plains there. >> the national weather service says 17 possible twisters were counted yesterday. only six have been confirmed so far. at least 15 people have been hurt. >> this is the same storm system that dumped at least 33 inches of snow in south dakota and parts of wyoming. killing three people there. the storms have caused millions of dollars in damage. let's check in with rick for a look at all of this and where that storm is headed. >> really oddly that tornado that touched down in wayne was a very large tornado and about 12 people at least injured there going right through the town. as a kid, i lived in a town called stanton which is around 20 miles away that tornado started in stanton. these towns have 600 people in them. very small little towns dotted right through there.

when i first heard stanton i thought i can't believe that that small town getting the start of this and going over towards wayne. a lot of damage. a lot of damage for a very small town. obviously everybody there knows everybody and is impacted like that. the big tornado tracking on the ground for quite a while. eventually they say 17 tornadoes reported. same tornado continuing to drop down through the area. tracked from just around the nor fork, area which is where stanton is over towards wayne and sioux city and parts of iowa. today this entire -- i should say northwestern parts of iowa. today this storm pulls off towards the east and threat from severe weather from parts of wisconsin all the way down through the mid mississippi river valley. parts of the ohio river valley and then down towards arkansas. i think more we're talking about the threat for some strong winds and some hail but we can't rule out an isolated tornado. this gives you the picture. you see these pictures? 90 degrees in memphis today? very warm conditions behind it? much cooler air. you guys were talking about indian summer. indian summer. >> am i right about that or

wrong? >> different reasonings have different definitions for indian summer. but in general it's a prolonged period of temps above 70 degrees once you are into the fall. >> once you are into the fall. after the first frost? >> in the northeast it's after your first frost. in different places it has different subtle definitions but the general is a prolonged period of temps above 70. >> all i know is it's hot and ridiculous. that's my. >> and i love it it i'm not complaining. >> brutal hot. >> thank you, rick. as the sunrises on the capitol, the government remains shutdown for the fifth straight day in the row. the blame game continues. are we getting closer to a deal. the white house is planning a rare weekend session passing small spending bills to fund certain government agencies yesterday. elizabeth prann is live in washington with the very latest with what's going on. elizabeth? >> good morning. the immediate answer to your question is lawmakers like you said remain at odds. not unlike what we saw at the beginning of the week. the house strategy has been to pass smaller funding bills to get anything moving to shake up the stalemate. making it difficult for any

lawmakers to oppose half a dozen were presented in the past few days alone. just yesterday, two were passed. one bill would open fema, and the national weather service ahead of the tropical system approaching the u.s. another would fund nutrition services for women and children in poverty. now, in a statement, house speaker john boehner said in quote today this is referring to yesterday. the house passed two more straightforward bills to keep critical parts of the government running while senate democrats allow their shutdown to continue it hurting hard working people. the white house has said they would threaten to veto those measures trying to force speaker boehner and the house to pass a clean stop gap funding bill. senate leaders also say they are ♪ supporting many quote continuing resolutions. today like you mentioned the house is due to work make sure federal workers get pay after this is over. the white house says it strongly supports it so we'll see how they act on it, anna, republicans are

not talking about specifically what they want scaled back. obama care is not specific programs not talking about that we are talking about process now and the back and forth yelling and bickering betwee sides. they say you are not talking to me. you are not talking to me. and the president is saying this. take a listen. >> when it comes to negotiations, i said i am happy to have negotiations with the republicans and speaker boehner on a whole range of issues. but we can't do it with a gun held to the head of the american people. >> this morning, i get the "wall street journal" out, and it says well we don't care how long this lasts, because we are winning. this isn't some damn game. >> it might be to one side and that was an unnamed source in that "wall street journal" article if you read it yesterday. and speaker boehner saying, look, the white house, the democrats are entrenched on this. they are not budging on this. they are treating it as if they're winning this and

they are sitting there with their arms crossed and not going to talk to us at all. >> is this a good idea for them to try to infli flick as much pain potentially on the american people or could this potentially back fire. we heard from rand paul saying they may not have test polled the non-negotiating factor. at some point, you know, could the tables turn and then back fire against them? >> well, stories like this may haven that process. it turns out that priests who work for the u.s. military have been told, catholic priests that if they show up for work, even on a volunteer basis. not expecting any pay at you will a and perform their religious duties offering sacramentos during the troops. baptizing children and officiating at weddings they could be arrested. that is the position of the u.s. government of the obama administration. >> that sounds like a joke. >> it does. >> threatening priests with arrests for voluntarily performing a sacrament? >> they go to the military base the group specifically

memorials in washington, d.c., if you want to go to the world war ii memorial or go out to any of the national parks, you are going to have a problem with that as well. national park rangers are basically being told they are having to deal with this situation. you saw the yelling match that unfolded earlier this week between i think it was a senator or was it representative, a republican representative who was basically yelling at a park ranger saying you are not going to let in this veteran here who is in a wheelchair into the world war ii memorial? >> because it costs more to keep the veterans out than it would to just leave the place unguarded and unbarricaded. >> there is no wall around it. >> i was in wyoming this week. a lot of -- the county there is federal land. closing bridges and parking lots. they had armed guard stationed all over the town preventing people from driving on government roads because of the shutdown. there is no justification for that. >> look at this. they are putting up fences now. they put up a wire around the world war ii memorial. so it is an open air memorial so people can walk through. now they are putting up wire fences. >> what does it cost them to print those signs and

put up those barricades and keep armed guards? the government is basically on strike at this point. the obama administration is on strike trying to hurt the country for their political gain. >> this is pulling on the heart strings of one of the world war ii memorial but also it's messing up vacation plans, wedding plans and things like that for people. >> it's pointless, back off, pull back armed guards stop pulling off placards and jogging paths and parking lots they might save more money. that wouldn't achieve their goal which is to win this battle politically. >> we do have some more headlines to get on this saturday morning. the woman shot and killed in washington, d.c. on thursday may have been delusional. homeland security officials say miriam carrie believed president obama was trying to communicate with her through radio waives. the 34-year-old led police on the chase after trying to plow her car into a white house barricade. getting a better idea how chaotic it was for law enforcement during the incident.

and both jeff and i were thinking why are we going back to mogadishu? what's the point? i think it's because we know that the story, the story is ours to tell. if we don't tell that story, who is gonna. the folks who fought in that battle and the folks who never made it home from that battle certainly deserve that recognition. honestly, we did it for our brothers. >> when you go back and see somalia still a failed state, still a disaster 20 years after all of those americans gave their lives, what does it make you think about the point of the original mission? >> you know, man, that's a big philosophical question. we could talk what's the point of almost any combat situation. and what you take out of it though as a soldier by the end of the day, it really has nothing to do with the flag and the mission and the political reasons we went it doesn't have to do with the greater glory of the range regiment. what you take from it at that point in the battle it becomes just about the guys on your left and right taking care of each other

and making sure we all get home. that's really what we focus on. >> can i imagine how difficult it must have been to see the movie black hawk down number one to. go back and stand in that same area in mogadishu again. what was that like for you? >> it was bizarre. going back this time you went back as a spectator. you weren't a participant. and you were in -- your care was in the hands of these tired gunmen and neither jeff nor i felt all that safe and secure. we didn't have the ranger regiment around us on our left and our right. i will tell you what both of us took from that was just how fortunate we were that first time to make it out. i had just forgotten how crowded those streets. were how narrow the streets. were and it was not to be taken for granted. and, you know, jeff is a preacher now, so he has to tell that you it was god's hand and i'm going toll tell you that that's one of the things i took away from it man, we were good but i don't know if we were that

jerry better known as mr. k the sharp tongue demanding orchestra teacher whose lessons about hard work and dedication stayed with his students for a lifetime. joining us now is daughter melanie can a -- strings attached, one tough teacher and the gift of great expectations. i'm going to start with you tell me some of the types of really the tough love that was administered in the the classroom. >> so, in strings attached, we talk about mr. k who really was the toughest teacher ever. he was the guy who never praised us. his highest praise would be not bad. you know, he was the guy who was incredibly strict. such a a disciplinary. his greatest saying was discipline yourself. he pushed us harder than our parents and other

teachers. he pushed us really beyond what we thought our own limitations were. and he actually made us better than any of us ever thought we could be. >> melanie, joanne says that he pushed her harder than her parents and a lot of other students. what was it like for you at home? >> well, he was my parent, so he pushed me a lot at home too and musically also. >> i want to get joanne back in here. you know, there is so much talk about parents and teachers and coaches. everybody gets a trophy that there is too much praise. do you think mr. k is really leaving a mark and is that what this book is trying to do? >> what we wanted to do with "strings attached" tell the story of a teacher incredibly harsh and tough and, yet, unbelievably successful and also left such a mark on his students. his students went on to great success in all sorts of fields. you know, we realize this something we realized

belatedly and really what prompted "strings attached," what got to us even write about it is after his death this is a guy who personally myself i hadn't been in touch with him. he hadn't been top of mind. when i heard that he had passed away a couple years ago it struck me like a ton of bricks. it was like oh my god. this is the guy whose levies i use every single day in life like resilience and perseverance. >> a lot more than the cello or the violin. >> or the we ola in viola in my case. >> what was it like for you at the funeral and you see hundreds of students coming to show support? >> well, i just was so greater weight of the evidence -- graduate find to see even though he was tough and harsh, he was beloved by his students. and i think the reason that we all worked so hard for him is because we all loved him too. and i think that his

students were grateful to him for the lessons that they learned from him and that's why they all came back. everybody flew in from all over the country and made music for him one last time. >> joanne, what is it like when your kids are about to, you know, start a new school year and there is a tough teacher that they are going i don't want -- are you saying, you know what that mr. k helped me maybe he will help you too. >> i try to use those lessons. melanie and i have talked about this a lot about how we try to bring this in our own life. i will tell you the most interesting thing, we really thought the book just came out strings attached just came out and it really is -- unfarn issue inned truth about a very tough teacher. we expected enter going to pulling on flack jackets for people saying oh my god how you can allocate this. the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive. we get all these notes back from parents and from

did you guys hear about this crazy story this week here in midtown, manhattan? it happened on the west side highway. of course, they had this range recovery barreling down the highway. surrounded by all of these bikers when a huge brawl ensues as they track him down. he makes his way into midtown manhattan. we are learning more details about this. i'm sure you saw this story exactly who was involved in the biker group as this unfolded. turns out at least two of the members of this group were under cover new york city police officers who apparently saw what happened. the driver was pulled out of the range recovery. can you see there one of the bikers smashing the driver's side window with his helmet. pulled this guy out. beat him badly in the street in front of his wife and small child and apparently the cops who were part of this mob did nothing to stop it. now, we are hearing reports that the reason they didn't act in the defense of this motorist who was being beaten was because they didn't want to lose their jobs and their pensions. >> right. so we had tom rough kin on

earlier a former nypd detective we asked him to way in and here is what he had to say. >> they are sworn to uphold the law and maybe one of them if they were up in the front stopped the assault. we don't know that this will help the investigation. let's talk about the investigation now. this will help the investigation and determine who was responsible because these officers, especially the undercover can give testimony because that's what they're used to doing. >> maybe it would have been nice if they stopped the assault before the motorist was beaten in public for the crime of being, you know, in the middle of a biker group that took over the highway. and, yet, apparently they did nothing. there is no video of them stopping this assault. maybe we will find out differently. at this point, it looks like they didn't. >> it's amazing when they respond to things so quickly in this city, here is what the district attorney's office says. prematurely charging individuals with low level crimes does not further the goals of the investigation it could weaken the case as we expect to bring against perpetrators of serious crimes.

>> low level crimes? >> here is what they are talking about here. allen edwards one of the bikers has been arrested by nypd, has not, you know, been charged and formally prosecuted by the district attorney's office. so, that's why they're coming forward saying. this prematurely, yes, could it hurt them in the future? i mean, investigation? >> they're looking at cameras and all these photos right now. >> we saw the tape though. >> right. it's not that easy. can you see their faces? you have to like decipher license plates. match cameras around the city. probably not something they can do. this would be a technological nightmare for them to have to look through. pass by this building. get that tape. pass by this building get that tape. let's also then see the patches that are on their jackets. we have to track down where that patch was. what biker group is that? seems to me a lot of work to do. >> here is the problem with this. if i'm driving down the west side highway with my wife and baby in the back of the car and i i am pulled out of my vehicle because some biker smashed my window and beaten me in the street. that does not qualify as a low level crime.

service in dallas and i do cleaning business consulting. i took a phone call from a woman who called just to ask for a quote for services. and she told me she couldn't afford it at that time. she wasn't working. she had cancer i made the decision that day in my company we would give away free cleaning to any woman who called for help and told us she had cancer. >> given back to the rest are of the family too. it has got to be so tough on them as well. watching mom go through all of this. how does it work exactly? you say you started several years ago. not just one made service? >> well, since then in 2006. i turned it into a nonprofit. we recruit made services all -- maid services all across the country. so far we have given away over 14,000 free cleanings. we have a thousand maid service was in the program. what we are doing because of breast cancer awareness month is suwannee river and -- swiffer and wal-mart have partnered with us to get the word out about this

they basically said to him stay out of the room. we don't want you in the room. so, i think that might be what's really going on here. >> well, every moment we are talking about the government shutdown, we are not talking about the disaster of obama care and its rocky implementation this week. that's got to help the white house, no? >> well, i don't know that this whole thing helps them much one way or othe other because what is now really happening is the whole debt ceiling debate coming is really what's going to start hurting here because if the markets start reacting next week which i think they will, it's really going to be bad for the when we. and -- for the economy and the president is going to the bear the brunt of that burden. >> you think the public will take a look at that time that debate and say the white house is responsible for this? yeah, i think they are going to take a sharst hit. he is the president he has to start leading the conversations here. that's what presidents do. he has all the tools. he has the oval. he has camp david. he has the helicopters and

>> 52 minutes past the hour. residents in maul town in florida were given a god bless america sign from a small church fourth of july holiday. they left it in their front yard too long. on wednesday they were told by the city to take the signs down saying they were in violation of a city ordinance. residents, including veterans are up in arms about it. a retired staff sergeant of the u.s. national guard. one of the people told to take down his sign and he joins us this morning to talk about it. emit. nice to see you this morning. what did you feel when you were told to take down this sign? >> well, thank you for having me. and i would like to make a statement first because i am here as a private citizen. and i feel that this has been an indictment that the city of barto. this whole incident could have been avoighted with a simple phone call or walk across the street.

and i feel very badly for the city of bartow because it certainly doesn't represent our city in a very he great light. and it's just not true. >> the city is actually known for its patriotism nationally and for the celebrations that go on for the fourth of july holiday. it does seem a bit ironic. we have heard from the city manager and i want to get your thoughts on this. it is clear some recipients of the notices have interpreted them that their message of god bless america is in violation of city code. this inat the interpretation is not the case. sign not the message. not citation and therefore do not carry any fine or penalty. emit, what do you say to the city manager there? >> well, i know george long personally, and that may be

true at this point in time but that's not what the people were told when the citations were issued. and i personally was not issued one. but i do have a sign in my yard. >> why does this personally offend you, imette? >> well, it offends me for many reasons one, it's an infringement on our first amendment rights and, secondly. as you stated earlier, bartow is a very patriotic conservative town and like i said, it why are we protecting the constitution and then denying the right to enjoy it? >> well, and you are not alone in this either, emit. a lot of people in the city are thinking about going to the commissioners meeting on monday night. what do you think needs to be done? what should be changed?

>> that tornado was part of a system that spawned twisters in several other states. >> and before there were tornadoes, the storm was just a simple blizzard. 33 inches of snow fell in parts of south dakota and wyoming. in nebraska, sadly three people were killed in a crash from snowy conditions there. rick has been tracking this storm, which is changing by the minute. hey, rick. >> snow beginning to taper off a little bit today. still some severe weather threat. not as bad as yesterday though which is certainly good news. that snow is going to go down in places like rapid city as one of your biggest snow storms possibly, at least in the top five that you have ever had across that area. very crazy for this time of year this earlied in the season. we do get severe weather though in the fall. not as significant as in the spring but get the similar types of setups have the cold air coming down from the north and still that warm and muggy area to the south. that's what the setup was yesterday and severe storms moved through northeastern parts of nebraska. as it did bringing two big cells that had tornadoes with them going from stanton up through wayne

and that cell you see down to the south both of those tracked on both sides of the sioux city area and unfortunately not going right downtown sioux city you see both of those continuing to drop' off those tornadoes. a rough night that we had last night. today we still have the threat for severe weather. it's from parts of wisconsin all the way down through parts of the lower ohio river valley and in towards that mid mississippi valley. what we see today will be more in the terms of severe winds and hail but we can't rule out an isolated tornado. we won't see any of those long track tornadoes like we saw yesterday. other storm is tropical storm karen. earlier we thought there might be a threat for it to get to hurricane strength before it makes landfall. not going to happen at all. in fact, all of the activity here has been pulled away from the center of the storm. the center of the storm way over here and all the activity this way. when they are apart like that, that does not bode well for any kind of strengthening. guys, i think we are going to be spared again this tropical system turning into nothing. >> after super storm sandy

now, i think the shutdown has been handled ridiculously by the white house and the democrats but it doesn't really matter. as the polls show people are just mad at everyone. the republicans had an advantage and they lost the advantage by the manner in which they played the game. >> do you think there is a potential the longer that the shutdown goes on that it will actually back fire against president obama and the democrats? isn't the president supposed to be the adult at the room at the table who is supposed to get everyone on common ground? >> absolutely, anna. the key of the executive whether the president, the governors, they all have to understand that they're the ones that bring people to the table and say guys, come on, let's work this out. he has no interest in working it out. look i have said this all the time. the democrats wanted a shutdown. they needed a shutdown. and as much as they may not believe in public prayer, they prayed for a shutdown. it was their rescue. they needed this to happen and it did. >> senate majority leader harry reid taking to the floor talking about decorum and the rules of order on the senate floor saying

this is completely out of order. this is completely out of line harry reid doesn't appear to be budging or moving towards a compromise either on the senate side. >> harry reid has blocked every house bill. it would have opened up all the national parks and museums that would have fully funded national guard and reserve units. in other words, let's not make this painful to people who have nothing to do with our inner conflicts in washington. but and i think you guys have pointed it out. the white house needs this to be painful. they have purposefully gone out and said to world war ii veterans average aide age in wheelchairs. you can't come to the memorial. shut down the cemetery in normandy. insult for people who for a year and a half ago go and pay tribute to these incredible heros pay their lives so we are living free today and not speaking japanese or german. this is absurd. >> now the white house, the administration has told military chaplains on contract.

roman catholic chaplain minister to our troops that if they volunteer to minister to the troops to say the liturgy they could be arrested. >> it's gone from being a hard ball political game to being outrageous affront to basic human decency and liberty. >> let's look ahead because this is infuriating so many of our viewers this morning. when you think of all the big programs we have to get to, talk about immigration. we were talking about trying to cut some of these run away entitlement programs. >> the president admitted that he was able to come to the table and work on all of that. it that just dead? >> the atmosphere is toxic in washington i don't see all of that happening. the tragedy is this. the president has this attitude i'm not going to negotiate with congress. because they are not going to get what they want. they are not going to get anything. >> politics is about not getting everything you want. but if you want to have the approach of i want it all and i want it now, you get nothing and you get it forever. i think sometimes the republicans have played that game foolishly, but

morning. >> good morning. >> i'm confused. why would it take any money to keep the world war ii memorial open? it's an open air memorial. why are they closing this in the first place? any idea? >> it's hard to know, tucker. they are actually closing the grass, too, by the way around the mall. so, if you want to know how extreme it's getting. what we looked at we tried to calculate through the park service what five guards would cost for 30 days. just making that estimate. i think they have spent more time though putting the barricades up around the world war ii memorial than they do guarding the memorial. i don't know what there is to guard, however, given the circumstances we offered $150,000 to will park service, they said hey we can't take it because there is a law says you can't do that my view is have congress write a law that says if private people want to pay money that would otherwise be paid for by the taxpayers, why not

take the money? >> well, of course. this is in line with military chaplains who are prohibited under law from volunteering their services to our catholic military personnel. they could be arrested for volunteering. that's crazy. what is the rationale behind that? >> i don't know what the rationale is. but apparently there were lots of folks around the country that have offered to keep the the war 2 memorial. wasn't just the republic national committee. according to the parks service through the "the washington post," there is lots of folks that would pay money to help keep memorials open. i think would think that if this is the case, even after the shutdown is over, it will be over one of these days, that the congress ought to pass a law to allow private people to pay for things that otherwise would cost us money. i mean, it's insanity. >> let's just be honest. you know exactly what's going on here. >> sure. >> the white house is trying to torque up the pressure and punish the

this is a story stirring up a whole bunch of controversy. a 12-year-old girl under arrest for bullying. she is accused of picking on her classmate so badly the girl considered suicide. the girl charged with disorderly

conduct. did the cops go too far? fox news legal analysts. aresd, this is too far? >> yes. this is not a role for the police department. this is a role for educators, for professional whether child psychologist. this is a role for parents. remember those days? if you got in trouble, i would come home, my father would say go upstairs in your room, think about what you did then he would come up. he would take off his belt and whack me twice. i promise you, whatever activity i had done, i didn't do it again. that was it and it was over. there were no handcuffs. >> i don't know if he turned out all right. >> i have no criminal record. >> he is arguing for the parents and school administrators not to get involved. >> in this day and age, i don't think the cops have gone far enough. i agree if a kid bullies anybody, it's the parents' fault. kids don't teach themselves how to be jerks.

severe weather. the two sides to the same storm. yesterday the severe weather and today we'll see a little bit of severe weather again. i don't think we'll see large long-lived tornados like yesterday. anywhere you see the yellow from parts of wisconsin down towards arkansas and anywhere in between, the threat mostly for strong winds and hail. we'll continue to track that. be very cautious of the potential for severe weather. there's been so much other stuff going on, a significant santa ana wind event across southern california. winds 60 to 70 miles per hour. things are heating up in the canyon. the big fire danger. they are saying this is the worst fire danger they've seen across southern california in the last five years. >> and that's saying a lot. >> they get these events there. today and tomorrow conditions improve by monday. >> i flew into san francisco a week ago. there is just a massive wildfire. there is the fire. so common to see it this time of year. thanks. three minutes after the

hour. we begin headlines with fox news alert a short time ago the military naming the four terrorists they say are responsible for last month's deadly mall attack. few details are known about them at this time. officials say they may have linked to other al qaeda operatives. al shabaab claiming responsibility for the siege that left nearly 70 people dead. the woman who was shot and killed in washington, d.c. on thursday may have been delusional. homeland security officials say merriam kerry believed president obama was trying to communicate to her through radio waves. the 34-year-old led police on a chase after trying to plow her car into a white house barricade. we are getting a better idea of the chaotic scene that was going on for all law enforcement around there during the incident. watch. this being taken by a bystander.

you see a police cruiser slamming into the barrier while all of this is going on. all this going on as police are responding to that scene on california thursday. a prisoner a free man because he is considered no threat. he was captured with al qaeda fighters back in 2001 and sent to guantanamo bay. he suffered from schizophrenia and diabetes. after more than a decade he's been released because officials say he is too sick to be a threat. he will return to his native sudan. ladies, if you're trying to dress to impress the opposite sex, don't wear the following fashion fads. men hate women wearing leopard print, big earrings, big sunglasses and ugg boots. guilty. >> i agree with all of those. >> i do all of them. women hate men wearing pink jeans, girly scarves and fake

and charged with a crime says the obama administration. >> here is what a spokesman for the arch diocese had to say about it. gs and contract priests who minister to catholics on military bases are not permitted to work, not even to volunteer and they risk being arrested. this is why moments ago house of representatives met momentarily to consider this bill deeming work by military chaplains to be okay because it would fall under the first amendment. >> what country is this? >> that we have to have this discussion on it. they metaphor a second bill on the day to consider doing back pay for the workers who have been furloughed. they are piece mealing sticking this together. >> shouldn't the obama administration have to explain, shouldn't jay carney have to explain whose idea it was to arrest military chaplains for saying the sacrament?

>> they felt like their hands were tied because they couldn't get civilian volunteers to come in and do that. is this whole ploy by the obama administration, what critics are saying anyway, to make this shutdown hurt americans? it's going to turn on them and make their poll numbers go down. >> we'll find out 11:00 a.m. house republicans are going to hold a press conference and they'll blame democrats who are going to hold their press conference at 11:30 and will blame republicans. >> here what is we know for sure. there is a legal opinion issued by the obama administration, one of its executive branch employees, that you will be arrested if you say the liturgy if you're a catholic priest. that happened. >> further more, if you go into world war ii memorials which are closed to the public, they are erecting wire fences around

these bikers. they bashed into the side of his car. two members of this motorcycle gang were new york city police officers who did nothing. they did not intervene or stop the beating. the question this morning is why. >> when you've got cameras all over the city and for a minor traffic violation you get pulled over in an instant here, the nypd do not fall asleep at the switch. when you have a situation like this where you're driving through the streets on the west side highway, people are saying it wasn't the west side highway. what was it? the hudson parkway. down into the city, cutting through the middle of manhattan, by the way. this morning we are learning that the bikers were outraged because he may have driven over the guy and may have killed him, but drove off 0. he didn't know, that's the accusation. he didn't know he drove over someone and ended up killing him. >> what would you do if you're this guy? you have your lovely young wife and small child in the back seat and all of a sudden you have

30-year-old on average, it's going to go up 200%. for people under 26, you might be able to stay on your parents' plan but it's going to cost your parents' plan. people don't have parents who can afford to add it. this bill is helping folks making $25,000 in retail. that's who you the hurts the most. delay this mandate. we can't expect to put one of the nation's biggest laws in recent memory and put it on the backs of young people. we have the highest unemployment since the great depression. >> you always read these polls, young people say we don't want government in our business. here is government getting right into your business, right in the center of it. are you noticing this? do you think it will affect voting patterns for people under 30? >> we are hearing it is going to. this is dependent upon young people. they need almost 4 billion young people to enroll to make this work. regardless of what anyone is doing, young people have the

power to stop this. if they don't sign up, the law is not going to work. a lot of young people are feeling empowered by this. >> it may not be viable. ron, what's the deal? would it be better to pay the fine instead? >> remember the fine is not just $95. it's $95 or 2% of your income, whichever is higher. a lot of times it's higher than $ 5, talking $200 to $600 for folks in this range. that is a lot of money. that's why we have to delay the mandate. that's why what is happening in washington is so important. republicans need to fight for these voteable young people who will go bankrupt because of this law. they can't afford to pay the fine. they can't afford insurance. more than 3 million young people will have to pay $1,000 more because of these obama care exchanges. if they buy into the exchanges which aren't working anyway, they are going to have to pay $1,000. if you're working at burger king or a retail shop that doesn't provide health insurance, how do you come up with $1,000? >> the fines are still lower

talking about the deterioration of the family and how that leads to teen pregnancy, violence and incarceration. how is the dinner table a great place to bring kids? >> it's a place where you have a safe environment. it's very important you bring children to the table and have those conversations. for my children, myself and my husband, when we sat down together there was conversation. the things we talked about, what's important in their life. what things happened to them in school. can we talk about the feelings they have? it teaches them how to communicate. they had to really argue a lot of times with us, have differences of opinion. >> learning debating skills. >> definitely. my husband deliberately will take a different position and have them defend that and have connections where they have to stand up for themselves and defend themselves. it's important to have those family moments. it's important for them to feel love and feel this is the safe place and the place where we are solid, we're together. this is important to us. you're important us to. we love you.

i think the most important thing we communicated as a husband and wife is that we loved each other. then that translated and of course we love you children. that was really something that was important. >> as i was looking through this book, the pictures you see of the family and just the love that you share with your husband is so sweet and wonderful. i remember listening to the speeches at the rnc and crying because they were so beautiful. that was a side of your husband we didn't get to see so often. how hard has it been for to you see the state of the country, even us dealing with the aftermath of this shutdown? >> it's frustrating to me because i feel if mitt had been there we wouldn't be in this pickle, that we would have resolved things and gotten things done. it's always frustrating. the other frustration for me at the end of the campaign is people didn't really get to know who he was. of course, campaigns try to vilify the other person. you know that's part of the game. it's still a frustration. at the end of the day i wish people had known he was going to

a world war ii veteran. he was on the committee that built the memorial behind me. when he found out that the texas veterans were coming down here and the barricades were wired shut, he grabbed his wire cutters, a bunch of other congressmen came down here and they were ready to commit an act of civil disobedience. the congressman tells me it's just not right. louis gohmer was here. they say this is knowing less than chicago thuggery. he said it's time for the president to stop this hissy fit. how did he happen to have a pair of wire cutters in his congressional office? he tells me after 38 years here at the nation's capital, he's got a little of everything at his office. he didn't have to use these or tucker you would have to bail me out this morning. >> i would be honored to do

that, todd. >> thank you, tucker. i do want to add one other thing here this morning. we have congressman waldon here from oregon. his crew, they've got about 60 veterans that flew from oregon. they are honored to be able to tour this memorial. >> amen. >> thanks for the update, todd. >> put away the wire cutters. we have other stories making headlines this hour. are you hoping to sign up for obama care this morning? the website is down for repairs after than a less than stellar debut on tuesday with millions of consumers complaining of glitches. one manager says the site will provide general information but will not allow enrollment during offpeak weekend hours. obama administration is not releasing numbers on how many people successfully enrolled in the first week. a school bus driver in portland, oregon, is fired after a student catches him snoozing at the wheel.

a 17-year-old noticed the driver dosing off for weeks. he decided to record it happening and share it with his parents and teachers. the transportation department fired that driver. residents in barto, florida, who had "god bless america" signs have been ordered by local officials to remove them. the signs were handed out during a fourth of july ceremony and sermon at the church there. what happens if they don't pick up the signs? they'll have to pay a minimum fine of $25 a day. retired staff sergeant of the u.s. national guard is one of the people told to take his sign down. he spoke to us earlier. >> why did we serve? why are we protecting the constitution and then denying the right to enjoy it? >> code an enforcement says its temporary sign ordinance dates back some 13 years. this may be the smartest

take a look at the weather map since you're waking up this morning. we have been talking about tropical storm karen. we are not talking about it that much this morning. kind of turning into a lot of nothing. it's barely hanging on to tropical storm status. winds are at about 40 miles per hour. what we are going to see is maybe two to three inches of rain along the coastal areas. some rip currents across areas. even over towards texas. be careful if you're getting out there to swim in the oceans. if you've got a surfboard, a lot of people are taking advantage of this across the gulf. severe weather threat again today. that big system that brought the snow across areas of south dakota still snowing. that will taper off. we are going to see that severe weather today pull farther off to the east. areas of arkansas to the mid mississippi river valley through areas of the western great lakes looking for the threat, mostly for strong winds and hail. we can't rule out an isolated tornado. here are temps. cool across the rockies. still warm across parts of the east. that indian summer clayton is

phone camera. the one on the top is far away. the one down here on the bottom is pretty tight. what's what? >> that was taken with one of the new blackberries and this was taken with this samsung galaxy camera. >> i played with this samsung galaxy camera. it has android built into the operating system. you can upload from the phone to the internet from there. >> that's right. there is no better device than this. it's got a 21 time zoom. >> it's a full frame camera. >> it zooms in. >> low light. this is a problem for cell phone cameras. i can bet taking a birthday party photo you want to get those great moments, that's got to be the cell phone camera. >> that is taken with an iphone. how many candles are on that cake? >> i can't tell. >> and the girl is lit well but you lose the family. >> then down here, looks like at least a longer exposure here. >> you are taking with a dslr

and it's a faster lens. you're able to capture much better image. >> here is a football photo. i can tell the top one here, this looks like it's darn fuzzy. >> it was taken with an iphone. there's fast action there. the other problem with that picture, there are irrelevant things in the photo. you have the cart here. in the bottom photo when we go to that one, you can see the people's faces, the football players' faces and defocus the background which is an important technique. >> simple tips, crop a photo nicely, zoom in to make sure you're getting relevant stuff so you don't get the cart in the back of it. >> right. >> bottom line is, make sure you have a camera with you when going to the special moments and don't rely on the cell phone camera. >> cameras are not that expensive. these are the moments of your life. >> if people want more tricks and tips, where do they go? >> unique photo.com. we have a muscle car event today. come on by. >> thanks. coming up on the show, business owners call it a job

they are waiting and seeing whether or not they are going to participate. you have to have more than 50 full time employees to be there. number one is if you don't have 50 full-time equivalent employees, and that's part timers as well as full timers, there is a formula. you don't have to worry about it. there is paperwork but you don't have to be required to have health insurance. that's number one. >> that is a sad solution that isn't good for the economy, that's for sure. >> it really is. i hear a lot of business owners saying i'm not going to grow my company past 50 employees, that is a sad statement. in is one way to get around obama care, not have more than 50 people. number two though, you could take what i call the mr. burns approach which is to say, i'm not going to provide health insurance at all. i have more than 50 people. i'll pay the penalty and the penalty will be $2,000 per full time person. less the first 30 people so there is a calculation you do. you just say to your employees,

go out on the exchanges and get it yourself. even that $2,000 penalty would be less than what they are paying for health care. it's not a good thing for employees either, but it's an option for some employers. a lot of people are considering that. let me give you a third option that's been popular which is a hybrid. that is this. you say to your employees, we are not going to deal with obama care, we are not going to provide insurance and deal with the paperwork or bureaucracy. we'll tell you to go out and get your insurance yourself on the exchange. however, we are going to pay the penalty and we are going to bump up your paychecks so you get at least the amount of money you were getting from us before when we were providing health insurance. then you have the choice to go on the exchange and buy your own health insurance and decide what you want to do. a hybrid approach where the employer is still paying, paying the penalty, paying a little bit for your employees to get insurance. you're just avoiding all of the

obama care regulation bureaucracy and all of that. >> it's amazing even paying a penalty and increasing salaries will still cost some less than complying with obama care. >> in many cases it will. if you're going to give your employees more money in their paychecks, you've got a tax effect. that will be taxable to them, as well. you have to be careful to that. another way is people are looking at the fine contribution plans. they are looking at setting up a formal plan for doing just that. that gets you away from any anti-discrimination practices or anything like that. those are the main four reasons that are out there for doing that. >> it's amazing what a drag on the economy all four of them are. a lot of them entail soaking taxpayers, in effect. >> yeah. in a way. the final thing i like to tell people as well, and it's a fifth reason is that you can always opt to get the minimum plan,

which is the bronze plan. we'll hear a lot about that in the future. bear in mind a lot of small businesses right now, the ones that have more than 50 employees, they are giving plans right now equivalent to silver and gold level plans. we'll be learning more about that as obama care becomes more prevalent out in the marketplace. they are giving their employees good plans as it is and paying for them. a lot don't have to do that going forward. they can say, we are just going to have the minimum plan, the bronze plan. if you want to get more coverage, you're going to have to pay for it, which unfortunately is not helping the employee. it's helping the employer a little bit. >> the point is the overwhelming majority of americans have good health coverage already before obama care. gene marks, thanks for that. up next, lady liberty is closed. thank the shutdown for that. we've got a way to still see her. courtney scott is next with details on places that are open. i recommend the road to hana. incredibly scenic and rugged road trip. you're passing through a rain forest, flowing waterfalls, scenic seascapes and end up in hana where you can lounge on the black sand beaches, and visit a tropical garden is nonprofit and publicly owned so it's opened. >> and they say pack a jacket for the end of it. and the dramamine too if you get motion sickness because there are so many curves. but this is a thing that everybody talks about with maui. >> it's one of the top things to do in maui. do not miss it. >> and a lot of people stop in san francisco before they go to hawaii. and i didn't realize this about the golden gate bridge, that it is privately owned so that's still open, but golden gate park around it, where you park to take photos of it, is closed. >> it's kind of tricky. the park is closed, so that includes alcatraz island and kbl any of the visitors centers.

but the bridge is private so it's open. you can go across it. there are vantage points to take some great pictures and take in the grandeur of the bridge. i think instead of going to the muir woods, go to the botanical gardens. 8,000 different types of plants. instead of alcatraz islands, there are 10 different islands in the san francisco bay. you can go to angel island. the marin island. lots to do off the coast. if you want to kind of get out on the water. alcatraz isn't the only one. >> here in new york city, the statue of liberty island and ellis island are closed. so what's left? >> there are a couple of options to get to lady liberty. the staten island ferry gets you pretty close. but if you want a deeper understanding, all of the ferryboats offer cruises that give you a narrated history of the new york harbor and lady liberty. so that's a great option. if you want to get an alternative to ellis island, so
