[ applause ] >> thank you. thank you very much. and welcome to "huckabee" from the fox news studios in new york city. i have to have a heart-to-heart talk with you and i want you to listen with your mind and not your emotions. i ran numerous times, and got elected, and now a host of a television show and a talk radio show and a daily commentary and

probably one of the few talk show hosts who have served as a ceo state and previeded over a senate as a lieutenant governor, as a candidate i had to run and win in a state that had only elected three people in my party to statewide office in 150 years, and i won by the largest margin anybody in my party ever had and received 49% of the african-american vote in my state and not many republicans in any state can say that, black or white. i am not saying that to boughs, but i am saying it because i want to qualify what i want to say. having run for office, served in office, and been a talk show host talking about those who serve in office i can tell you that the easy of those is being a talk show host. you see, i get to take a stand and fully control the debate and i can change the subject whenever i want to. i have no responsibility for the outcome of my ideas should they

be embraced and adopted and the solutions i push for on radio or tv don't have to work. i can be absolutely absolute about how right ei am. as governor i had 89 out of 100 in the house who were democrats. in the senate, 31 out of the 35 of the senate were democrats. with those numbers i did not have a legislature that was looking for ways to make me look good. the legislation had to be good, but i still had to sell it to people who did not have a natural interest in wanting to pass it. this week most of the republican callers to my radio show supported the shutdown and showdown. one said it best, we sent those guys to washington to take a stand and whthat's when i realized, houston, we got a

problem. because no we didn't send those guys to washington to take a stand, we sent them to govern. it's easy to take a stand. you don't even have to go to the trouble for running for office or serving as an elected official. on radio and tv i take stand every day. can you take a stand by raising your voice in the capitol steps but to make a change you have to get inside and make a vote. i can raise cane as a talk show host, but to reform prisons i had to govern. unless the numbers are all on your side you are not going to get everything you want. by the way, i had a theological education and in theology, things are black and white. politics is not pure. and it's never pretty. by the way, when i cook barbecue ribs i cook them on low heat and i cook them slow to make them fall off the bone real tender,

because good cooking is not done over even explosion but over a steady heat. we have seen people in washington taking stand but the question is are they governing? those people don't care about the process in the kitchen they care about the finished product. governing is about mastering the product so the product will not make us sick and tphaourish. some of the talk show hosts ought to run for office and find out what what it's really about. fox news contributor. great to have you both here. thank you very much. i will start with you. do you think we blurred the lines between governing and campaigning and talking? >> absolutely. can i just start by saying bravo on your phaumonologue, i not on want some of your barbecue, and we all need some of your common sense. everything you said just shows how you could be the ace in the hole for your party. in a democracy you get what you want by convincing the majority to agree with you, and republicans lost the argument and we have gone into this campaign mode since 2010, and that is hurting our fragile economy. >> has it gotten out of hand to the place where they lost sight

and the goal is not to see if they can issue the latest barb, and some of the language has been over the top and the worst i heard. >> the republicans had a winning hand as recently as six months ago, and we had three big deadlines in march, the debt ceiling and continuing resolution and sequester, and boehner separated them. he said let's make democrats pass a budget in the senate. he got that. we could have had a $3.6 trillion budget passed in april in the country which would be flat spending revenue across the levels and october 1st would have been obama care roll out day, instead of government shutdown day, and the debt ceiling negotiation on october 17th would be something where republicans had the upper hands, and now i think republicans have mangled and combined all of the

issues and it really hurt their own previously strong negotiation. >> yeah, and democrats have been defending obama care, and instead republicans helped to change the subject, and threw the democrats a lifeline. inspite of that, the democrats, instead of saying okay we are going to get the shutdown over pretty quickly, let's move on, they seem to be dug in, and everything gets give the veterans their money and help the children for cancer treatment, and they say no, we get it all or nothing. i have never in my life thought that governing was an all or nothing proposition? >> it absolutely is not an all or nothing proposition. and democrats have caved in a number of ways. if you look at the numbers tied to the continuing resolution that could pass today, boehner brought it up, they already

include massive spending cuts that across the board spending cuts through see questation, and democrats don't want this number but they say we need to fund the government and move on and boehner is not taking them up on the opportunity to bring it to a vote where he has the vote to stop these 30 or so republicans from basicallying an unattendable precedent. you know this is not how legislation can continue to happen for us to be the strong powerhouse? >> harry reid sits on it like a hen on eggs but nothing hatches over there. i am trying to figure out, when he talked today, he said government workers on furlough ought to go home and play chess, and that's not the mark of come let us reason together. >> the president set the tone on this one. he said repeatedly he would not

negotiate on the debt ceiling as if that's his call to make. there is a divided government in this country by design. the house of representatives does get say in it and you do have to negotiate. democrats are looking at the polls which say that republicans rightly in my view hate the government shutdown and will blame republicans more than they blame the democrats, and they are looking at that and saying we don't have to negotiate anything ever again we are going to let republicans die on the vine here, and that's over playing their strong hand here. i think obama specifically is going to have to give republicans a lifeline out of the box canyon they built for themselves. >> final thought here, and bill clinton i understand took part in the negotiation, and he worked with people, and i did not see that with barack obama, and i know you will defend he is doing what he is supposed to do, but the president is only one third of the government and he is not all of it and how does he

get to say it's this way, no negotiation, period? >> i think governor this goes back to the precedent that i said. we cannot have a small number of republicans dictating that they are going to destroy our economy if they don't get what they want. that's a precedent we can't set for president obama or the next president who may be hillary clinton, president clinton, you know, the significant other, if we have our wish, but i think president obama has been very open with the republicans and has upset many people on the left and compromised with them time after time after time. this is just the final straw that these kids in the capitol really need to learn their lesson. >> that part about him working with them, i missed that chapter. i will have to go back and watch that. thank you very much. in less than two weeks the government is not going to have

while congress battles over how to re-open the government the debt ceiling deadline is fast approaching and some people think that could be the apocalyp apocalypse. do we borrow more or tighten the belt? can congress come together in time to keep the money going before the 17th? joining me now is oklahoma congressman, james langford on the budget committee and on a

committee. there has been a lot of controversy on what has been going on in washington and one question comes, who is running the house strategy? is it speaker or senator ted cruz because that's the question out there in the public. so who is running the strategy in the house right now? >> i hate to say this, but it's the american people in our districts running it. there are other folks in my district and other duistricts saying they don't want a shutdown but they don't want obama care. and they are saying to find any way to get relief, and the last office was pretty straightforward was saying we just want to make sure that individuals won't be fined just like businesses are not for the next year and members of congress and the white house all of obama care applies to them,

and they have to live under the same law. those are the two things we put out there and we think that's pretty clean. >> i agree. i think those are reasonable things. why didn't that get put out a couple three weeks ago rather than after the shutdown? it would have been a real i think easy sell to the american people and hard for the democrats to argue, but the 11th hour came down and you put forth a hard line defund obama care. you knew that was not going to happen. you knew the president was not going to accept it so why didn't you make the offer you just mentioned when it could have perhaps been accepted? >> that might have been a tactical error on our part. well, the folks in our districts wanted us to be getting rid of all of it, and we wanted to be able to do that, and in the end we came back and said this is where we are, and individuals need to be protected and congress needs to live under it, and we passed with a complete

unanimous vote in the house and senate and the president signed a bill to protect the military and contractors to make sure nothing will apply to them. the bill we passed, i have it with me, is a one-page bill that clearly outlined here all the people exempt from any of the shutdown. they have yet to implement it, and we are folks on military basis all over the country on furlough, and the law has been passed and it's been signed by the president but the white house is using pressure to saying whether the military is out of it or in it when they know full well they are in it. >> is the white house being arbitrary by shutting down things that have not one thing to do with being shut down, and they are spending more money closing them by ignoring them.

>> the lincoln memorial is opened 365 days a year, and all the previous shutdown that have occurred over the past 30 years or so lincoln memorial has always been open, and this time they are putting up barriers and saying this time it's going to be differ, we are going to shut down more. to us that is trying to apply political pressure. the situation is bad enough. why would you try to make it worst as a president? you need to protect as many people as you can, and that's his responsibility as a leader. >> there will not be a default on the ceiling, so that a surrender or a beginning of negotiation? >> i think it's a clear beginning of negotiation. we have $17 trillion worth of debt that has a lot of interest payments that go into that. if our interest rates go up we have a bigger debt and that's a real problem for us. we have to be attentive to that.

i think the speaker is right to say we are not going to play with the full faith and credit of the united states, and way passed a bill a few weeks ago that surprisingly enough the senate never picked up. it's the right time to be able to negotiate these big issues. how do you stop having debt ceiling votes when you are so deep in debt, and the only way to do that is look out at the next 30 years and look at how we can work our way out of the deep hole. can't do it in a year, but we can do it. we have to start turning the wheel. >> you might want to remind the president back in 2006 senator barack obama said that raising the debt ceiling was unpatriotic and irresponsible and that's when the debt was only $9 trillion and it's now 17. start by saying mr. president we come to the table having agreed with you, but the you of seven

years ago and not the you of today. >> when he was a senator he voted no on raising the debt ceiling and now coming back and saying it would be irresponsible to not raise the ceiling. there is an interesting dichotomy there. you have to be able to look at the reality. what you opened in your opening monologue, there is a difference between playing politics and making policy. so many come here because they are good at politics and they are not good at implementing policies and ideas. the people at home need solutions and answers. we have to get to the solutions and answers and get it solved. >> thank you very much. appreciate you being here. now, go do the lord's work in the devil's town. we appreciate it. congressman james langford of oklahoma. he voted against obama care, but he says that it's here and we need to figure out how to

few democrats in congress who voted against obama care. he since lost his seat but says now that obama care is law we have to do our best to deal with it. joining me now current vice president of the insurance company florida blue, jason allmyer. you were one of the democrats that voted against obama care. what were some of the problems

that made you take a stand and it was very unpopular and likely costs you your seat. >> i had a lot of medicare advantage recipients and the bill was very specific to medicare advantage, and i am not in the game any more, and i i live in florida and as citizens of the united states we have an obligation to support the laws enacted and help them succeed. nobody in the country should be rooting for failure. it's law and passed and enacted and validated by an election, and now i think we all have to make sure we help it succeed. >> could more private sector involvement and innovation help the health care options for americans out there? >> i think without a doubt it's going to help the health care system, the payment mechanisms you are seeing now is improving the quality of health care.

you are seeing that not just in florida but all across the country. with a private market in that mindset where they are going to control cost and go after the high quality health care that we need to make sure that we let the political apparatus in washington worry about the policy but we can't for get our obligation which is to serve the people of florida and united states. >> there are a lot of mandates, and people have to buy things whether they want them or not, and that's the mandate, which is a heartburn for a lot of people for a lot of people, and they say i would like to pick major catastrophic issues, and do you think that could be address and should it be addressed and would it make it more popular if people could make pick their own policy a little bit? >> here is the issue with that. because preexisting exclusions are no more under the law anybody with a chronic health condition can get health care which is a good thing and we support that, you have to make

sure that the young and healthy people are in the system and are part of the risk pool because if you are left with the risk pool and older and sicker people, that will drive up costs for everybody. and so if you do away with the mandate and incent aadvisory young and healthy people to stay out -- >> it means young and healthier people need to pay a clip to finance people like me. great to talk to you. thank you very much for you having the courage to vote your convictions, and now to make something good that you feel you have to live with. great to have you here. >> glad to have you here. and while pope francis gets criticisms for talking to

typing how we hate everybody. the internet has a way of dehumanizing people, but when you sit and have a conversation, it's difficult. >> you are not saying all views in the religious world are the same -- >> yeah, i am not talking about relativism. we need to get back to having the conversation. we need to be okay with disagreeing and dialogue. here is the truth. if we all have humidity in the pursuit of truth, if we are all after the same goal, i think chris anti-holds the most water and i am not afraid of having that conversation, so that's what we need to get back to. >> people hurt the pope talk about the same-sex marriage and the santa tea of marriage, and do you think the pope was trying to change the church's doctrine or emphasis? >> this is an american christian disease or western world i should say, for that matter, we

always get people in trouble for going too far and never get people in trouble for going far enough. everybody is handcuffed because of that and because of the internet world pfr i think he might not have articulated it well, but it's all about conversation. i don't think it's what he was saying, like you said. >> we talk about some of these figures. young people are staying away from church and not showing up and don't care. what do we get to get young people back interested, and i don't care if they go to a particular church, but what do we do to get them interested in their own life? >> well, you are either going and being on a mission or faking it, right? instead we create a culture and i see jesus pursuing and engaging the context of the culture of the languages and having a table fellowship of

people that don't belong. they need to go to them. >> the pope got in a little trouble because he did an interview with an atheist journalist. jesus would hangout with tax collectors and prostitutes, and all the people that everybody else shunned. he treated them with dignity and respect and is that what we are missing in the christian world today? >> i think that's 100%. that's what made jesus scandalous. doing that was very scandalous to the religious institution and people in power and that's what we need to get back to, the thing that made chris anti-scandalous, and yes, there is one god and jesus is his name and all gender barriers are gone, and all racial barriers

>> loctober is breast cancer october is best cancer awareness month. my next guest is living with stage four cancer. she visited us twice while undergoing chemotherapy and now she is here to talk about a new treatment targeting the cancer cells without all the nasty side effects. great to see you back. >> thank you. wonderful to see you always. >> you look terrific. you are going through treatment and yet you don't look like you are going through treatment. this is an amazing kind of break through. >> yeah, it is.

it's an amazing break through. the drug has numbers and letters, and -- >> they ought to name it noreen. >> yeah, like a hurricane. >> yeah, it's a drug that is called the cdk inhibitor, and what it's doing, cdk, proteins are what cancer grow. they did the research and the foundation put money into the research -- i thought it was a good project so i focused on finding a good research and put money into it and four years later it's on the market. it blocks the protein cdk which makes cancer grow. so now it's in a phase, one trial that i am in, and my liver -- the liver is kind of halted. it's not getting bigger or

smaller, but that's a win. i don't have any side effects like i did when i was doing chemo, and that has been my dream. when i started the foundation, i don't want to talk about the cure, i don't even care about the cure, for get about the cure, it may never come, but if we can put money into research that will find drugs that can make cancer a disease that you can live with and not die from, and not have the horrible side effects of chemo, that's pretty fantastic. >> yes. when you were first diagnosed with cancer, and it was many years ago, and you had very small children. the outlook and the prognosis was not good. what were they telling you then? >> well, i had a very small tumor in 2001, and i only had a lumpectomy and made ration, and they said there was a 4% chance it would come back and two years

later it went into my bones and i realized i was in real trouble. when cancer moves from one place to another and you are in trouble. so they told me i had -- if i was lucky i would have five years. >> at the most? >> yeah, five at the most. i was like, what? that is unacceptable. i am not going to have five more years, and it has been 12. i think i am stubborn, and i think i get things done and i am working to find answers about this horrible disease that is affecting so many people, and as we get older it's only going to get worst because 1 out of every 2 men will get cancer and 1 out of 3 women will get cancer and we have to pay attention to that. >> you have tried to rai and awareness through comedy. most people would not put comedy and cancer in the same sentence? >> because comedy is like

exercise and it releases endorphins. when you are happy the indoor funs are there and you are feeling better. i have engaged many comedians to work for prevention and early detection. on my website, i have blackjack doing a mammogram, and will ferrell, they all do funny skits. i do mother's day cards where they all end up saying get your mammogram, get your pap smear, prevention is the best medicine. >> all of the money that is raised at your foundation goes to research, the kind of research that is making a huge difference. we are seeing it with you. i have seen you this year twice, and i see you now, and i am just stunned. it's amazing. it's working. >> it's working. >> what can people do to help? >> oh, gosh. i think that you have to -- you have to align yourself with an organization where you know what
