>> president obama moments ago behind closed white house doors met with a group of very frustrated democrat senators. ed henry is standing by with the breaking details on that meeting. first it was a busy day on the hill where women many see as the face of obama failures kathleen sebelius was taking heated questions from senators, frustrated senators, democrats frustrated with the sheer breakdown of obamacare to the web site disaster to the embarrassing numbers enrolled. >> i am accountable to this committee and to the american public for getting the fixes in
1:01 am
place. and we are committed to getting healthcare.gov fixed. >> you have been misleading the american people and the president has over and over again. i would rather you say we were wrong, yeah, we didn't know the truth. >> made a promise to fix a broken system and make sure all americans have affordable healthcare. you mad cdad secretary have to make good on that promise. >> in the last five weeks it has been a miserably frustrating experience for far too many americans. it is unacceptable and i am accountable. >> you said america should hold you accountable which is why today i repeat my request for you to resign. >> resign, we all know that ain't going to happen. accountability, please, the woman still has her job. people are frustrated obamacare sucks and seems there's nothing
1:02 am
we can do about it. anyway out of this mess? >> we have more hearings than people who signed up for obamacare. sebelius is acting pretty confident. before the hearing president obama said if you like your job you can keep your job. that made her very confident. by the way closed doors are there any meetings where doors are open? i am tired of hearing behind closed doors. >> meetings you have with bob have to be done with the door observe. >> that's true. president obama is way more efficient with bill clinton. the difference is obama screwed a million people. >> anyway out of this? >> i don't think so. not at this point. the web site is the least of their problems. even when they fix the web site you have kathleen sebelius and i think this is an under reported story saying today that hhs
1:03 am
reinvites people signing up. that translates to them sitting on millions of dollars, which they are, there was one report how much they are sitting on to try to add ties to get healthy young people into the system. because they didn't have the courage to make the penalty more than the premium they can run a our money, i still don't think they are going to have people sign up. they have doctor shortage, lack of people enrolling premiums going through the roof because of adverse selection and employer mandate which is the biggest issue in 10 months. >> the question sitting there waiting senators like to hear themselves speak, the question wasn't asked who made the call to go october 1st knowing very well there were security risks and the web site wasn't ready. >> i am sweating a little bit because i went to the marathon a day late. >> great effort, though.
1:04 am
>> max baucus was a client of mine for many years. he was the kind of guy that was very quiet. he is the one who wrote this law, he said there's a train wreck coming. he didn't have a problem with the plan itself, he has a problem with the distribution of information. >> he also looked kathleen sebelius in the eye said you are going to be done by november 30th, right? she said, yeah. were you confident? >> they never should have put a date on it. they should have said no and defined it along the way. max baucus is such a refreshing mature voice on this issue. it also shows what a democrat not running for reelection in a red state can do. that means he can be completely perfectly honest with them. the rest of the democrats are
1:05 am
saying the president didn't lie shths he didn't lie. on the senate meeting where the democratic senators came to meet with the president and worked behind closed doors i am sure they were very respect fful but they have to be nervous from from some of the election results last night. >> 14 democrat senators were in there. do you have any more details about that meetling? >> 15 of them. i talked to people who were in the room and they were saying there was frustration among the senate democrats. it is beyond the rollout they are not getting enough information and not enough help from the administration in terms of pushing back and explaining this to the american people. specifically the next shoe to drop is what kind of a delay is there going to be in the enrollment deadline. you have colorado who is an ally
1:06 am
he is not a critic. he put out a statement that they have to do more with the privacy, people's social security, et cetera. he wants the enrollment deadline pushed beyond march 2014. he didn't specify how far. the other thing another democrat of alaska told us he has been screaming at the white house his words yelling at them to do a better job of figuring out the web site, giving people more con if i p -- confidence crisis in confidence. another up for reelection said there's a crisis in confidence as to whether or not the administration can get this web site fixed. if you push that enrollment deadline beyond march of 2014 what are you going to do? three months, six months you might be pushing it right up against the election even more of a referendum in that election make it a bigger issue than democrats want.
1:07 am
>> there's a chorus of this line there's a crisis of confidence. it comes down to competence and just one step below. it's a millimeter below saying it's incompetent. here's the thing i am concerned about for my friends in the communications office. am it is not a communications problem. we need you to give more speeches, do we really think that's going to help? >> it's my understanding it goes beyond speeches. we should point out it was a two-hour meeting that's a long meeting. it isn't a half hour drive by. the vice president was there and the white house chief of staff and the guru in charge of fixing this web site. also mark baguette said he's getting calls from constituents that say i can't get on the web site. i like the law. they are not wanting to repeal
1:08 am
the law they want to fix it they want to amend it. i was told that mark said he tried to get on the web site and couldn't. >> how many up for reelection next year? >> all of them except michael bennett of colorado. hides are on the line. >> if you are looking at returns from virginia the closing that happened in the last four or five days if you look at the counties the red counties went redder, that clearly was motivated obamacare it certainly wasn't such necuccinelli. terri mcauliffe became an impact them self. >> cuccinelli is someone who has been against the president's healthcare law in the beginning. he tried to make that an issue at the end. it helped him close a double dig get gap. he lost but he got closer. even more telling than that
1:09 am
think about when the president was there for a rally to help mcauliffe he never mentioned his own healthcare law. if he wanted to help mcauliffe who was an unabashed supporter of obamacare, he wasn't running from it, the president didn't give it a big push. he understands in these close races this healthcare law is pretty unpopular right now. >> we know the web site is just a small problem when you look at the policy side of this bill. has the white house indicated their willingness to budge on the hole spolicy side or doing with the penalty for a short term or extending the individual mandate. second part of that have republicans expressed any interest in maybe now with democratic support trying to push through some policy changes with bipartisan effort? oo 24they have some
1:10 am
bipartisanship to change the law. the president and jay carney have said in recent weeks they are willing to sit down with republicans. a bill for example mary landrieu was talking about yesterday who wants to delay the fines as you asked. jay carney was a little skushy on whether they support it. specifically they have not gotten behind any various bills pushing for changes. when you have democrats like mary landrieu and mark baucus you have to change things. there has to be a deadline beyond march 14th. these democrats facing the voters of 2014. the president doesn't face the voters again they do. they are pressuring this white house. that is like toy to change here. >> is there a truth they were handing out amode yum to
1:11 am
incumbents because obamacare was stressing them out? >> i didn't hear that, greg. i am not sure how to respond. >> that's a good answer. >> republicans came with no votes in the united states house. none. >> why do they think for a minute these guys will end. >> the republicans made it clear from day one five years ago they were going to try to block everything the president does. they know that inside the white house. why do you think they pushed forward with the october 1st roll out. they knew weeks before when the tests were not working out if they had pulled back and said we are not ready for prime time the republicans would have bounced on it and had ammunition to slow or stop the law. republicans criticizing this law is not new and isn't going to change the president's mind. that's why the meeting is so important.
1:12 am
15 senate democrats who's political hide are on the line in the election of 2014 pressing the president to make changes. republicans screaming at it is not. democrats in the words of mark beck cu baucus saying he has been screaming at them. >> first of all i wanted to compliment you when eric mentioned your name you did that little pop up. it was very well done. it shows you have a lot of energy and you bring it to the show. appreciate that. >> this is what i want to say is the white house concerned about the bigger issues that are coming, the small group market that is starting to make a noise to say they are going to lose lots of plans in october of 2014 people who free up on december 1st. are they planning ahead for the next big problems they are going to have? >> they tell us behind the scenes they are working 24/7 to
1:13 am
not just deal with the web site but other issues that are popping up. you put your finger on a very important point which is the president as the web site was failing came out in the rose garden and said this is not just the web site. this is a small part of it. this is people looking at the law. i think republicans now moderate democrats are up for election looking at it saying the you be stance of this law may also blow up in the white house's face. you get the cancellation letters and premium spikes, et cetera rnlts, et cetera that may be more painful. from the president on down while they will get through these bumps in the end you will have millions of people who don't have insurance now who will have insurance and we are focusing on people with the premium coming up. they will have premiums going down and have better healthcare in the end. right now it is hard to see them
1:14 am
getting beyond this where even democrats are mad at them. >> doesn't matter what they want or what they tried, it doesn't really matter, because come mid november we will find out how enrollees there really are and that will be a bug day. >> ed henry inside the briefing room at the white house. thanks. >> blue state blow up for chris christie has people wondering how big chris christie really is. check out facebook page page@facebook.com. facebook.com/thefivefnc.
1:18 am
so tonight, first and foremost, i want to say >> tonight fist and foremost i want to say thank you new jersey for making me the luckiest guy in the world. >> it was a blowout for chris christie who just won another four years as governor of new jersey with 60 percent of the vote in his solid blue state it exploded overnight especially after this. >> the people of new jersey four years ago were down hearted they
1:19 am
didn't believe government could work for them any more four years later. we stand here tonight showing that it is possible to put doing your job first to put working together first, to fight for what you believe in and still stand by your principles and get something done for the people who elected you. i know if we can do this in trenton, new jersey, maybe the folks in washington, d.c. should tune in their tv's and see how it is done. >> the old fashioned reference tuning in it's all digital now. just kidding. congratulations chris christie. >> the roll out caused the blowout. there was no chance with obamacare, it's the hobo on the subway covered in poop and no one wants to be touched by him. that helped christie and it got the race in virginia pretty close. what christie is talking about
1:20 am
which i think is important we replaced 50 states with 50 identities. this country has gotten decisive over what you are and what you do. used to be black, white, hispanic. christie what he is trying to say to me it's time for unification not divisiveness. i think he's trying to say he can do that. >> you are a new jersey resident. do you think he can do that? >> he did well. he got 51 percent number in a blue state. let's not forget. a poerl went outright after that. chris christie or hillary clinton in 2016 hillary clinton beat chris christie by one whole point. he talks one game but plays another game. he says he's very much conservative. he tried to say he was in a tea party world. he tried to say i feel like i am one of them. he's really not.
1:21 am
he's in favor of a lot more gun control in new jersey now he's walking that back. he claims to have lowered taxes. you haven't lowered my taxes. certainly haven't lowered mine. income tax with at the same level as they were when you came in my property taxes are sky rocketing. he's talking one game die know if that enough. >> how dangerous is it for immediately following this race he's got a job to do as governor, four years of being governor eve there was a director named in new hampshire to coordinate on behalf of governor chris christie. >> i don't think he should waste any time. i think he needs to step back and regroup before he goes out hard and starts campaigning. so he can do things behind the scenes. but he does have some work to do. fiscally he stood up to the unions which i think was a very important conversation that should happen across this
1:22 am
country. private sector verses public sector. it was a gutsy decision. that's how he won initially. he also was able to show leadership after hurricane sandy which helped him. he stepped up and helped that state. however, he did do some things gay immersion conversation, global warming that have conservatives very upset with him. again ronald reagan was very about unification. chris christie has to help when it is not shooting inside the tent. rudy giuliani tried to ignore those states and go right to florida it didn't work very well. >> i want to get to the virginia governor's race before we get out of there. you think christie is well positioned to start plying to indiana. >> he is but it's a very conservative state. anybody believes that he didn't
1:23 am
take a hit for the tea party is out of their mind. he's going to try to do it without the tea party. i think he can do it. >> and libertarians. >> and libertarians. >> we are going to get to that next. the other governor's race we thought would be more of a blowout comes right down to the wire it was in virginia. here is cuccinelli who ultimately at the end of the night lost the race. >> despite being out spent by the president of $15 million this race came down to the wire because of obamacare. that message will go out across america tonight. >> eric, conventional wisdom was he was going to lose big. mcauliffe team, governor elect their team sweated a little bit around the 7:30 hour when fairfax county came in he was able to pull it out. >> maybe a couple weeks ago it was called by 14 or so.
1:24 am
s it was going late into the night for him to regain the north he earn fairfax virginia area which is a suburb of dc. there's a libertarian candidate that got 6.6 percent of the vote. if you dig deeper the guy isn't very libertarian number one, and number two he financed a big portion of his financing came from a big obama funder and supporter from texas no less. is this the game? democrats are going to start to play, to buy the party by backing a third party candidate trying to liquidate and come apartment tallize some of the vote? >> still absolutely no evidence of that. >> of what? >> texas democrats funded this guy. >> you have to show where your money comes from. he pit a lput a lot of money in.
1:25 am
>> tea party didn't want to go to a primary which would have almost certainly put the lieutenant governor, he would have beaten mcauliffe. this is another example of the tea heaparty once again costinge republicans a seat. >> you disagree? >> i disagree. there's a couple lessons from virginia. i don't coat ed koch. but the voters have been spoken and now they must be punished in the state of virginia. one thing edge really affected him was the rnc under michael steele spent $9 million to get the governor elected. this time only 3 million they have to explain why they didn't invest there. republicans focusing on the social issues you have seen the election polling he lost democrats big. the same polling they did in obama election convinced them
1:26 am
that cuccinelli was a right wing nut he should have been focusing on obamacare much sooner. if the shut down wouldn't have happened if re pub cans had gotten together he would be governor today. strategy matters. >> cuccinelli and christie have on paper the same positions on some of the issues. christie wins by 60 percent with women, minorities. he did well and cuccinelli doesn't. how does that happen? is>> purity is great for the ego but you have to win first and then you can fight. if you have that backwards you are going to lose. there's one race we haven't talked about because he's not a governor. new york city mayor was a blowout bill de blasio he makes
1:27 am
castro looks like john birch. it will be a one-termer only because new yorkers will wake up. he is so red he is like a walking lobster. >> he makes obama look conservative. >> their they were not willing to put money into a tea party race. >> a lot of stuff to chew on in if the days ahead. >> next bill cosby wants a major cultural shift and he's asking college students to make it happen. you will hear from him when "the five" returns.
