paul krugman and all the other doomsayers out there. maybe there's hope after all. >> we've got a place to go. all right. that's it for this week's show. thanks to my panel and all you for watching. i'm paul gigot. hope to see you right here next week. again, with a fox news alert. american aid is now on its way to the philippines. hello, i'm greg jared. welcome to "america's news headquarters." rescue crews sifting through the rubble in search of survivors. after a supertyphoon battered the tiny pacific islands on friday. and now, the secretary of defense chuck hagel ordering the u.s. military pacific command to help with the search and rescue efforts there. hundreds are confirmed dead. the death toll expected to rise into the thousands. david piper following developments, streaming live from bangkok, thailand. david? >> reporter: hi, greg. yes. as was feared, the death toll is

mounting in the philippines. filipino officials have said they fear that as many as 10,000 people may have died in just one area. now, typhoon haiyan struck the philippines friday. it tore through the central part of the country, leaving death and destruction in its wake. this is one of the worst storms to make landfall in recorded history. packing winds of nearly 200 miles per hour. as many as 4 million people have been affected. much of the relief effort is centering around the town of taklaban in laiti province hit by a huge wave caused by a storm surge. houses, schools, and the local airport were smashed by the typhoon. the philippines red cross says perhaps 1,000 people have died there, but eyewitnesss say that figure could increase considerably as many people are missing. the nearby island of samar has also suffered badly. 300 people are reported dead there with another 2,000 missing. hundreds of thousands of people

are surviving in the open now in the wake of the storm. the philippines' military is leading the operations to bring food and medical supplies to them, but they're faces difficulties coping with enormity of the disaster. there has been reports of looting as people struggle to find food. philippine interior secretary who viewed the disaster area by helicopter says the scale of the relief operation now needed is overwhelming. an international effort is now gearing up to help the philippines. u.s. defense secretary chuck hagel says they have made available helicopters, aircraft and search equipment to help the relief effort. typhoon haiyan is now bearing down on vietnam. a massive operation to evacuate the coast there is under way. it's now believed to have changed direction slightly and may make landfall north of the capital, hanoi. but it is weakening now, and hopefully won't cause so much devastation in vietnam.

but, greg, there are reports, now, of another typhoon which is bearing down on the philippines. back to you. >> all right. tough situation there. we'll check back with you, david piper, streaming live from bangkok. david, thank you. to give you some idea of the strength of this superstorm, nearly 480,000 people in the philippines have been displaced. sustained winds reaching 195 miles per hour. some guests -- some gusts were as high as 235 miles per hour. compare that to hurricane katrina, which did so much damage. winds during landfall, 125 miles an hour. talks on iran's nuclear program ending overnight in geneva with no deal at all. world leaders spent three days grappling over the best ways to reduce iran's nuclear capable. israel's leaders have warned now against any deal that eases sanctions on iran. but secretary of state john

kerry is defending his strategy on iran, saying the agreement that he was seeking would be in israel's best interest. >> we are not blind, and i don't think we're stupid. i think we have a pretty strong sense of how to measure whether or not we are acting in the interest of our country, and of the globe, and particularly of our allies. like israel and gulf states and others in the region. >> connor powell is live from jerusalem with the latest. connor? >> reporter: well, despite assurances from secretary kerry, officials are concerned about the directions of the talks. as soon as reports surfaced last week there were plans in place that could ease sanctions rune, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu unleashed a barrage of criticism on the entire process. today even took it a step further, essentially saying a cabinet meeting here in jerusalem that he is happy that it was a good thing that the talks have fallen through.

he also promised he would do everything he can to prevent a bad deal from being implemented. now, israeli leaders insist before economic sanctions are lifted on iran, the islamic republic's ability to enrich uranium must be removed. supporters of the current deal that was in the works that fell apart this weekend say this would not have been a final agreement. this would have been a stepping stone toward a more comprehensive deal with the goal of dismantling iran's nuclear program. in recent days, though, netanyahu has issued multiple statements criticizing the talks, urging the u.s. and other world leaders to take a harder line with iran. his comments are the latest example of the growing tension between israel and the obama administration. now, as talks have progressed, israel continues to hint that they would use military force if they don't like the agreement that is in place. there is real doubt whether or not israel has the ability to launch a successful, effective attack on iran without u.s.

support. there's a lot doubt in the region that that's probable. >> connor powell in jerusalem. thanks so much. now to the late ef on the bullying case rocking the nfl. suspended miami dolphins guard richie incognito stands accused of threatening and harassing his team mate jonathan martin so badly that martin left the team. now, in an exclusive interview with fox sports, incognito says the whole thing is just one big misunderstanding. and part of the, quote, locker room brotherhood. take a listen. >> i'm embarrassed by it. i'm embarrassed by my actions, but what i want people to know, the way jonathan and rest of the offensive line and how our teammates, how we communicate, it's vulgar. it's not right. when the words are put in the context, i understand why a lot of eyebrows get raised, but people don't know how john and i communicate to one another. >> during that same interview,

incognito also went on to say that after the whole scandal broke, martin actually texted him and told him that he didn't blame him for what happened. it's unclear if either of them will ever play for the nfl again. as we await the latest numbers on just how many americans actually signed up for obama care, we are hearing more of what democrats and republicans have to say about the troubled rollout and both sides have two very different predictions about what the law's impact will be in the long run. peter deucy breaks it down for us from washington. peter? >> reporter: this week, we will finally find out how many americans enrolled in new plans at healthcare.gov during month one. by the end of month two, the administration hopes to have the site working better for almost everyone. the former secretary of defense, leon panetta who once served in president obama's cabinet, isn't is sure that's probable. and he's got some advice for his

former boss. >> i think ultimately that if they can fix it, they can put this back on the right track. if they can't fix it, then i think the president may very well have to accept some changes. >> reporter: the white house was asked friday if there are any changes to obama care on the horizon, and a spokesman responded with this. "the president has said for years now that he is open to working with members of congress that have a genuine interest in trying to strengthen the affordable care act. that's been true for years now and it's true today." this morning we heard two different predictions for the true impact of obama care. at ballot boxes this time next year. >> democratic candidates will be able to run on obama care as an advantage leading into the 2014 election. >> this issue is going to be toxic for the democrats, and believe me, we will tattoo it to their foreheads in 2014. we will run on it and they will lose because of it. >> right now, not all visitors to healthcare.gov can actually

a very moving tribute this veterans day weekend. some brave heroes of world war ii. the surviving members of the doolittle raiders making a final toast to their comrades who took part in the daring bombing mission on japan in april of 1942. for many, it was seen as a turning point in the war, and helped boost morale after the attack on pearl harbor. the tradition was started years ago by james doolittle, himself. all right. what's the deal? wall street closing out on a record week high. stocks surging on friday. what's behind this rally? and what does it mean for you, your 401(k), all your investments? joining me now, brenda, senior business correspondent, anchor of "bulls and bears." good to see you.

>> nice to see you. >> so what's behind these market record highs? what's driving it? >> mainly it's the fed's easing money policy, what's been driving the rally for at least the last year. and the fed is buying up $85 billion worth of bonds. >> per month. >> per month. yes. and any sign that they might pull back, they are expected to taper, but everybody wonders when. so it turned this into, like, a fo good news is bad news market. if there's good news, that means the fed may pull back. if there's bad news, the stock market goes up. >> the market's going to freak the moment they anticipate the fed pulling back. >> well, yeah, they're expecting that they will in the next few months, but some people, some analysts are pointing to the fact that there are some fundamentals that are starting to creep up. that the economy may be looking a little bit better. that earnings are good. there are a lot of smoke and mirrors in the earnings, and revenue, basically what withdyo

sell has not been good for many companies. >> there's an old saying "wall street is not the economy," and that is certainly true. let's put a graphic up on the screen. take a look at this. economic growth is stagnant. joblessness is still way too high. manufacturing is flat. people in poverty, up to 50 million. that's a record. a record number living on food stamps. a record 10.9 million collecting disability. the economic picture is bleak. and, yet, wall street is at a record high. >> well, yeah, sometimes people say that wall street is a leading indicator that it goes first and then the economy follows. but the one thing that you didn't mention there is very troubling to me, and that is that consumer confidence is at a two-year low. now, consumer spending makes up about 2/3 of our economy of economic growth. and so we're heading into the very important holiday season. if consumers don't feel confident -- >> right. >> -- if they don't know that they're going to keep their job, and many of the jobs added last

month were part time. so the labor market is still, you know very tenuous. >> is that why when 204,000 jobs were added in the month of october, which is 100 more than many analysts expected. you still saw the unemployment rate overall tick up 7.2% to 7.3% if. >> yeah, sometimes those two numbers diverge because they're based on two different surveys. there's some thought the government shutdown may have thrown a glitch into that. again, the part-time issue is a matter. so i think taking a look at the next jobs report is going to be much more influential. >> all right. for folks who've got 401(k)s, they're a little bit older. they're going to have to -- what do you say? >> well, let me tell you something. just keep this in mind. so far year-to-date, the s&p 500 which is probably a part of your retirement plan, it's a part of many, is up 25% on total return. that includes dividend payments. that's not bad. you've been enjoying this rally. there probably will be a pullback, but don't panic.

new reaction today to the president's apology for all the problems during the botched launch of obama care website, and over the many promises that he made but not keeping. especially the one about keeping your current health care plan. just this morning, on cbs' "face the nation" governor chris christie called out the president. >> when you make a mistake, you should own up to it and apologize for it. i think people give you credit for that. the fact is that the president didn't tell the truth. it turns out not to be true that people will keep their insurance policies no matter what, that they could keep their doctor no matter what. and we need to confront that issue. the president needs to deal with it in a head-on way. >> jamie weinstein joins us. senior editor at the "daily caller." jamie, the president grudgingly, belatedly said he's sorry people are losing their plans. conspicuously, he didn't

apologize for misleading and deceiving all those people on a massive scale. so is governor christie's point a valid one? >> listen to what christie said. he said "if the president made a mistake, he should come out and apologize for it." i don't think there's evidence that he made a mistake with what he said. he was well aware from the documents we've seen, and what he said during a live back and forth with eric cantor that he knew that people would lose their health insurance if obama care was implemented. so i don't think he regrets -- i think he regrets a lot of things. i think he regrets the implementation of obama care. i think he regrets people don't have the same view of what's best for them if their health care that he does. but does he regret saying that if you can have your health -- if you like your health care, you can keep it? >> people are calling that a lie. they're saying it's a lie because there's now evidence emerging that he knew, and his aides knew that it was untrue. yet, he kept making a false claim. now, you know, i'm a lawyer. lawyers call that a lie. >> there's no question about

that he knew, but is the question is, does h he regret it? i think he doesn't regret it because he knows he could not get his signature health care plan through if he didn't say that. i think there's a lot of things he regrets but doesn't regret what he says was untrue, because if he said what was true, this was a close vote to get obama care through. if he told the people they'd lose their health insurance that they liked, i don't believe he would get it through. >> the end justifies the means. the fact checkers are giving president obama a record number of pinocchios for all his promises. and, you know, columnists are having a field day with all of his latest executions and prevarications. here's one. obama and his minions are pretending they only said the vast majority of americans', nope, trying to deflect blame to insurance companies won't work because no one will take it away

no matter what line or to claim nonexisting caveats were there all along. there is no escape what obama said was not true, and that's all there is to it. obama has re-branded himself as a liar forever. you know, and jamie, every day new evidence emerges, again, that obama and his staff knew for years that what he was saying was not true. i mean, can this only get worse, as sort of, you know, to borrow a phrase from don dean, a cancer on the presidency? >> it goes even deeper than that. there's no question at this point we know the president lied when he said that if you like your health care insurance, you can keep it. but there's even greater lie going on right now. the new lie, if you will, is that it's only going to effect a small number of people. i think the number they put out is 5%. but what we've seen from studies is that that's going to be tens of millions of people. maybe even over 100 million people who are going to lose their health insurance or if not lose it, see it significantly

altered and see the premiums go up. so now that they're admitting to that one thing they said back then is not true, but now it's only going to be a small number of people. we're already seeing that's another obama care lie, this is going to effect many more people than they're saying right now. >> the administration predicted 93 million in the federal register 3 years ago. that's hard evidence. we have a copy of it. and, you know, jamie, the vacuous excuses and promises keep on coming. now the president is vowing, oh, i'm going to fix all those millions of plans that were canceled. my goodness. it's too late to do that. isn't it? i mean, they're gone. they're term nated. you can't get the genie back in the bottle. the carriers like aetna and united health care, they left the marketplace. they don't exist in some areas anymore. >> it's very hard to see how he fixes it. getting people their health insurance back that they lost. i don't see how that happens. and even delaying the mandate as

some people want to do is a very tricky thing to do considering that insurance companies have priced out their insurance based on the set of rules that were in place. that will upset the set of rules that are in place, and what's more, it's going to actually hurt the president's health care plan because he needs young people to sign up. if you remove the incentive, the penalty, it's going to reduce the chance of young people signing up. from what we can tell, they're not signing up as it is. >> yeah. that will precipitate what the experts call a death spiral to obama care. it will collapse. out of time. jamie weinstein, as always, good to see you. thanks so much. >> nice to see you as well. thank you for having me. >> that's going to do it for me. thanks for joining us.
