meteorology background. >> it's great they would be here on this veterans day. in the meantime let's get to that fox news alert. while you were sleeping, u.s.s. marines arrive in the philippines. america's bravest helping with the relief efforts in the wake of the devastating typhoon that has left at least 10,000 people dead. david piper is live in bangkok, thailand with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. it was feared that vietnam was going to get hit next by typhoon haiyan. there was a massive evacuation from the coastline, some 200,000 people. but overnight the typhoon veered north and made landfall between the chinese and vietnamese borders. it does seem they have escaped the worst of it. but it seems we have a humanitarian disaster on our hands in the philippines at the present time. hundreds of thousands of people are in desperate need of food and medical supplies. typhoon haiyan struck the

central philippines on friday packing winds of nearly 200 miles per hour. it left a trail of death and destruction in its wake. philippineo officials fear as many as 10,000 may have died in one city. it was struck by a storm surge caused by a typhoon. the airport was wrecked. the airport now is operational again and u.s. marines have arrived in a c-130 aircraft with supplies. president obama has vowed to help the philippines in their time of need and the u.s. military has already aircraft and ships available to help in the relief effort. meanwhile there are reports that 300 people have died on the nearby island of somar with another 2,000 missing. the philippine government is warning that the disaster is overwhelming and 100,000 people looking for food and water at this time and we do hear reports now of looting there. >> david piper live in thailand with the latest.

that's terrible. >> on the sunday shows not death and destruction but politics as usual. no doubt about it, governor christie emerges from tuesday's election as the man most people are talking about because of his overwhelming victory in a blue state. the way he took the hispanic vote, the way he did a great job getting 32% of the democratic votes, leaving many to say what do you think about your buddy, president obama, and obamacare? >> he suggested earlier too that perhaps he should just level with the american people. take a listen. >> anybody who's run anything in their lives could see this coming a mile away. and that's why we didn't do a state-based health exchange. we didn't do it because we could see that this whole program was going to be a problem. and so the president's biggest problem right now is he's got to tell the truth. we've seen this in new jersey. i told lots of hard truths in new jersey that people didn't necessarily agree with but they give you credit for looking them in the eye and telling them the truth.

let's get to that point. let's own up, tell the truth about what's going on. then he can worry about whether he can work something out to fix the problem. but if you're working out of a fantasy that these are not major problems that need to be fixed and need to be addressed, this is what lots of us have been saying all along about the fact that this was just too big for the government to handle. >> one of the problems for the president of the united states is in the past when his approval ratings have gone down people still have trusted him. unfortunately for him, since he has that mantra where if you like your health care, you can keep it. now we realize, wait a minute, he was not being truthful. you look at the fact that there is a report out over the weekend. 52 million americans in all, 52 million may wind up losing their health care. if you look at the great state of north dakota, so far 35,000 have lost their health care. and you know how many have signed up for obamacare? 30. 35,000 lost, 30 signed up. going the wrong direction. >> you're doing the math

there. i do think chris christie suggested that he was the one who spoke with the president and said, hey, why don't you just level with the american people and apologize. his apology t have been enough. he, i think, is remarking on something you just alluded to, steve, which is a credibility deficit that i believe the administration right now may be facing. >> the "wall street journal" wrote about that today. they have personal admiration for the president but not when someone has problems with something like this. governor christie's advice is if president obama ran on 2012 you can keep your health care plan if i decide it's good enough for you, he would not have won. not only the democrats not running from obamacare in the case of debbie wasserman schultz, she believes when it is all said and done, in 2014 this thing is going to turn around and they're going to have success by embracing it. listen. >> the peace of mind that those americans are going to have knowing they can never be dropped or denied

the news and this morning we are learning more about the organ animal sanctuary worker killed over the weekend by one of the cats she was caring for. we now know that 36-year-old renee chapman may have alone inside one of the cougar cages at the time of the attack. that would be a vie -- violation of the rules. a board member said she had a good rapport with the animals and it is protocol that two workers be in the cages at all times. a manhunt is underway in texas for two suspects after a house party in houston that was intended to celebrate a girl's 18th birthday erupted in gunfire. two high school students were killed and dozens were hurt. police say it was a party gone wild. >> someone discharged a firearm in apparent celebration of music.

someone else who thinks it is important to carry a pistol to a birthday party shoots into a crowd. >> the host of the crowd had security on site and they were searching guests on the door. police say they believe the suspects may have entered the party through a back gate. this was a close one. while you were sleeping a 2,000 pound satellite heading to earth burning up upon arrival. experts say the debris probably landed in the ocean. the satellite ran out of fuel about two weeks ago turning it into space junk and putting it on a collision course with earth. >> it's beginning to look a lot like thanksgiving. check out these macy's day parade balloons undergoing a test flight. this year we'll have four new floats including sponge bob square pants. this is the 37th year snoopy has been a part of the parade. boy is that fun for kids.

the white house is considering a possible administrative change to obamacare. it will expand the number of individuals eligible for tax subsidies. will this quick fix cause long-term damage? stuart varney is here to fill us in. >> yes. >> in what way? >> because this possible fix, this reported fix would cost a great deal of money and the taxpayers would have to pay it. and therein lies a second broken promise. let me explain this one. the fix reportedly would mean giving more subsidies to far more people, especially those who have just been kicked off their plan. you subsidize them. you subsidize people making up to $50,000 a year. individuals. that would cost $1.2 trillion between 2014 and

2019. $1.2 trillion. where's that money going to come from? >> it doesn't matter. the president will be out of office by then. >> where is that money going to come from? if that's written into the law, what are you going to do about that? you either borrow that money or you raise taxes for that money. and if you borrow that money you've broken another promise which is we won't add a dime to the deficit because of obamacare. >> when this whole thing was being debated, the c.b.o. comes out with numbers and says judging by the plan this thing doesn't add to the deficit. therefore the president has a stump spaoefplt now we find -- a stamp speech. now we find there will be additional subsidies needed. where's the accountability? >> we went into this in the first place trying to get the cost of medical care down, the whole reason for health reform. that's gone completely out the window. totally gone. the c.b.o. when they were saying it's going to cost x number of dollars they have to work on the information provided by the obama

administration. their input came from the white house. it was fake. >> what do you think about all these waivers? don't you think that figures into the bottom line? when you waive it for one group, when you subsidize the union how do you expect the equation to be the same? >> this thing is going to cost a whole lot more money than we ever thought. you either raise taxes to meet that entire cost or borrow a whole lot more money. it is a disaster for america's finances going forward. period. a disaster. >> and we have to talk about quality of health care because you're not paying people as much, you're not going to get the quality. >> i think we'll end up twa twa -- with a two tier health care system. >> varney and company coming up at 9:20. often monday is your best shows. >> is that right? you're a keen student of my show? >> yes. i promo you. i try to have quality time together without those other two.

in 2012 fox news.com a shocking twist to the aurora massacre investigation, the accused killer james holmes sent his psychiatrist a note before his rampage. this week a panel of judges will rule whether the reporter must appear in a colorado court after being subpoenaed to reveal her sources. winter could wind up in jail. joining us is fox news senior judicial analyst judge andrew napolitano. what she revealed was there was a notebook james holmes sent to his psychiatrist that told how he was going to kill people. >> right. she didn't produce the notebook but she had sources who told her of the existence of the notebook now his sources want to

know -- his lawyers want to know who the sources were. his lawyers want to argue that whoever her sources were probably in their view, somebody in law enforcement, violated the gag order and, therefore, broke the law and we have the right to know about that. jana, on the other hand, is holding up the colorado shield law which says that you have a right to sources and you don't have to reveal your sources unless the people who want to know the sources or can't find them by any other means. guess what? those means in colorado can include going to jail, so she filed another lawsuit in new york where she lives. she works upstairs with the rest of us. where she lives, where she works and where she presumably did her work in this case because in new york you cannot be put in jail for the refusal to reveal your sources. today a panel of judges in new york will decide whether or not she has to be forced to go to colorado where she will go to jail or whether she can stay in new york where she can't go to jail.

>> if she is ordered by this panel to reveal her source, that has a chilling effect on journalism. >> it absolutely does. the first amendment presumes journalists can have certain tools and among those tools is you give me this information, steve, and i will never reveal who you are. that is the promise winter made to her sources. i spent a lot of time with her. she is a first-rate reporter and she has said to me she will never reveal who her sources are, meaning if she's sent to colorado she will go to jail. there is no time limit on how long she goes to jail. it's not a sentence. it's you're going to go to jail until you decide to reveal your sources. >> our colleague judith miller wound up going to jail for how many days? >> judith's case was different. what they did to her was reprehensible. judith was in jail for 85 days and after she got out it turned out we learned the prosecutors already knew the information they put her in jail to try to get her to cough up.

what the prosecutors did to her was reprehensible. we don't know what defense lawyers in colorado know or they don't know but we do know they persuaded the judge to put winter in jail if she doesn't cough up her sources? >> are they trying to punish her or the sources? >> they want to punish the source. if she goes to jail it weakens the first amendment for all of us. she is the one who will suffer but all of us in this business will suffer because of this. >> if she promised her source she will not reveal her identity and told you she will not do that she could wind up going to jail for how long? >> until the court decides that keeping her there is no longer going to change her mind. you know what the rule of thumb is on that? 18 months. this is for a crime not committed. this is going to impair the public's right to know because sources will clam up when reporters start going to jail. >> just not right. we're going to be watching.

lot about religious liberties. there seems to be sort of a pushback in terms of what our military members can express in terms of their beliefs. what's your take? n this administration has not confined their attack on religious liberties simply to the workplace. it's really started in the military. this administration, obama administration, i believe, all evidence would suggest they're on a search and destroy mission as it pertains to religious liberty. we over the last three years have been cataloging a number of cases, working with about 20 different organizations. in fact, we have those listed at militaryfreedom.org and testimonies, identities hidden for obvious reasons of members of the military who personally experienced this. you think about this, these are the men and women who are putting their lives on the line -- >> like you. >> to forget our freedom and theirs are being taken away. there is something fundamentally wrong. >> and protect the religious freedom of others. >> our other countries and ours. having ban veteran, i understand

would be hit next by the typhoon. a mass evacuation was launched and it seems to have missed the worst of it and the typhoon made landfall between vet familiar and china and downgrade to do a tropical storm. it's turning into a humanitarian disas in the philippines of the hundreds of thousands of people are in desperate need of food and medical supplies. the typhoon struck on friday, packing winds of nearly 200 miles per hour. it left a trail of death and destruction in its wake. philippino officials fear as many as 10,000 people may have died in just one city. it was struck by a storm surge caused by the typhoon. houses were demolished and the local airport was wrecked and also we are hearing now that perhaps as many as 2,000 people are missing on the island of samar. back to you in the studio. >> david piper, thank you very much. the rest of today's headline, we'll head to heather

sunday shows. you love watching. you love politics, care about the country. he told the president, be honest with the american people. is that good advice? >> he was not honest and then he apologized and i was actually in moscow, russia and i heard about this apology and everybody over there was laughing about it because he deceived the people. he got obamacare passed. had the people known how bad it was, with losing their policy, people being wiped out, now they can't even get them. they don't even want them, they can't even get them. he totally lied. he therefore got his obamacare passed. had congress known this, even the democrats would have voted against it. i think you'll see democrats turning against obamacare pretty soon because otherwise they're going to be losing elections left and right. so he lied and then he said oh, i apologize. and i say give may break. and i can tell you, in moscow they were laughing about it. >> should the republicans try to fix it or should they sit back and watch it?

>> i don't think it's fixable, number one. i think the whole thing with the web site is a disaster. i know a lot about web sites, you got to rip it apart. you can't just fix it. you have to start all over again. it's too complex and it's too crazy. you've got to start all over. now i hear they're up to a billion dollars on a web site. i had web sites all over the place, if i pay $3, i'm paying too much. i get angry with my people. here they have a billion dollars for a web site and they just hired the same company that gave this terrible web site to fix it and they're paying them tens of millions of dollars! how stupid are these people? >> right. it's almost a reward for not getting it right the first time. >> they're making a lot of money. that company, you ought to buy their stock, because somebody is a great salesman. i think i'm going to try to hire the salesman of that web site because they can sell anything if they can sell that garbage company. >> talk about selling, debbie

wasserman-schultz said the democrats are going to run on obamacare. they're going to use it to run in the 2014 elections. your thoughts? >> i think if they coo that, they'll have a -- i know many democrats and many, many. i come from new york and i have great relationships, republicans and democrats. they're petrified of what's going on with the obamacare. first of all, it looks grossly incompetent because of the web site. aside from everything else. but losing these policies left and right and people were totally satisfied with their health care and now they don't have any. and it's not even a question of price. if they paid three times as much, they can't get it. and it's a disaster. so i think if schultz does say that, i think she's going to lead them right down to the road to destruction. i mean, people -- i've been saying a long time, i think obamacare will ultimately fall of its own weight. and i think the republicans have to be very smart. they have to sit back and watch 'cause lots of bad things are going to happen and i think a lot of democrat, certainly the ones on the fence in close elections, they'll switch over

and go against it. they'll have no choice, unless they don't mind losing an election, which can happen. >> one of the awful things that's happening right now are these con men and scam artists. i read a report in the "wall street journal" of the "washington post" today about how people are going up to doors, knocking on the doors of the elderly saying i'm from the government and i'm here to help, which is, of course, something famous that ronald reagan said once upon a time of the but these are scam artists. we're talk being identity theft and from here on out, it's just going to get worse because people are so confused. >> it's unbelievable what's going on of the you'll have a -- >> you'll have a lot of people make a lot of money with scams and we have no protection with the computer system. no protection on the internet because the web site is so pathetic. what i have heard they're going to do is especially up the web site. they can't make it work. so they're going to open it up, take away all checks and balances so that people can just go, and anybody can go on. >> great. >> that's going to be a much bigger disaster 'cause then

place. in other words, iran gave practically nothing and it gets a hell of a lot. that's not a good deal. >> the french stopped this deal from going down thankfully! now it's on pause. >> he said, we're not blind or stupid. well, i don't think we're blind, okay. but i will tell you this, we are negotiating so poorly. first of all, we've weakened the sanctions. they've gotten us there and we've very substantially weakened the sanctions because iran told us that would be a good sign of good faith. give me a break. look, i predicted a long time ago that because of the fact that we have people that have no idea how to negotiate, we'll end up going to war with iran, which is unfortunate because it's so much money, so many lives. i'm talking lives on both sides and i'm a very militaristic person. you know that very well. but we will end up going to war with iran because we have people that don't know what the hell they're doing and we can make a

better deal -- better deal. i'm not talking about a deal. we can make better deal through negotiations. you know, this could happen. so whether they want to prove their manhood because everything they do is such a failure. every single thing that this administration and our president does is a failure. perhaps this is a great way of showing his manhood. we have a great problem in this country. we have no leadership whatsoever. >> it's an ugly situation. let me tell you what's not an ugly situation. miss universe crowned in russia and you were there. what can you tell us? >> i was in moscow and i was in russia and they tweeted me so fantastically. i met so many incredible people. the winner from venezuela is absolutely incredible. she was absolutely incredible winner. and i'll tell you who was also a winner was steven tyler. it was the greatest ending to a pageant that anybody has ever seen. steven tyler got up, he did a number that was incredible and

for using a hand gun to ward off an intruder at their off campus apartment. but they had a legal permit for that gun, so does the punishment fit the so-called crime? here for the debate, criminal defense attorney and david schwartz, attorney and former prosecutor. thanks for being here this morning. certainly hot button issue over at gonzaga number these guys use a gun, they had a permit for it. person comes in, intruder comes in, a felon, looking for cash. they defend themselves and now they're in trouble? how is that the case? >> that's unfortunately the circumstance. the school has a policy that says no weapons on campus. these students were in an offcampus apartment that they rented from the university. the law here is not in con -- you can't reconcile the law with this school's policy because they were defending themselves. these students have a right to defend themselves. our united states supreme court says that self-defense is a natural right. so this college, this jesuit

college, which teaches rerearence to the natural law, has no more authority to interfere with it than our government does. >> you're shaking your head, david. >> it's so cut and dry. this is a private college that has a private policy and it doesn't just count for on campus activities; it counts for housing, campus-owned housing. this is clearly a campus-owned house. the handbook is very clear. you can not possess a handgun on this property. it's not like they're being criminally charged here. the school is going to take action. and one of the actions, they could be expelled. >> that's the point. they have not violated any state or federal laws, neither criminal nor civil. they were risking expulsion from their college, fourth year seniors at the university, for having a gun, protecting themselves when a six-time convicted felon showed up at their door. why isn't the school doing a

better job protecting their students and then reprimanding them for defending themselves? >> she's great lawyer but 100% wrong? >> how so? >> because it's a private school. fox news could set policy. they could set a policy, can't bring a handgun into new york. it's the same thing. you can't bring a handgun in and if you violate the rule of the private school, you have to face a penalty. >> these are two young men, two college students, the intruder wanted cash. what if -- i know you dewpoint like to do the what if, but what if these were two female students and that felon happened to be a convicted rapist what, if that felon wanted more than money, what we be having this debate? >> i think it's oranges and apples. if the school can't properly protect its students, that's another story all together. they should be sued for that. there is no question about it. but when you are looking at this limited circumstance, there is certainly a public policy not to allow students to possess handguns on campus or in housing

and these students environmented that policy and -- violated that policy. >> i respect david very much. he's an excellent attorney action but i think he's got it wrong because if this student did not come down the stairs with his gun, we could be having a completely different conversation. this convicted felon could have attacked the students. they could have been injured or hurt because let's remember, the law treats these two students as victims. so that the school would be punishing them for protecting themselves. it's completely contrary to our criminal and state laws. >> i agree with that, but this is mob of a global debate on the right to possess a gun, the second amendment. there is so many issues here. but the bottom line is there is a policy in place. it was violated. there needs to be punishment. >> but our united states supreme court said you have a natural right to defend yourself. >> under limited circumstances. >> a great debate here for sure. the president of the university saying he wants to have a more

>> firefighters have been involved in sacrificing a lot over 12 years and giving back to our military, especially since the aftermath of 9-11. now the fdny is doing something else that should get your attention. spearheading a mission to gather funds and spread the word and get other firefighters and other fire houses involved and get these track chairs for every veteran coming back who unfortunately have to use them. danny prince is a new york firefighter. lost many friends on 9-11 is spearheading these efforts. >> it's a pleasure to bely. after seeing the independence on "the o'reilly factor," firefighters grouped together and said they had to do something to pay back to the veterans that deserve the best. so we started doing different fund-raisers. mike did a big thing with the bike ride. we were enabled to buy five chairs. >> 15,000 each. >> at 15,000 each. correct. we want to spearhead with the rest of the firefighters, police departments, emt's across the

report shows the unemployment rate among veterans is 6.9%, while the rate for post9-11 veterans is even higher at 10%. >> thankfully people are taking action. outside to talk directly with some companies looking to hire veterans at a "fox & friends" mini career fair is anchor extraordinary cheryl casone. >> good morning, brian. this is the first ever "fox & friends" mini career fair. first time we're doing this on this veterans day. why is this important? because as you mentioned, more than 700,000 veterans are still looking for jobs right now. one of them is with peter canton, with the army national guard. you were a major in the national guard. what kind of job are you look for? >> something in the field of policy analysis, potentially disaster management and preparedness. >> what was your job in the military specifically? what kind of skills did you have that you can bring? >> i was an artillery officer and became a military intelligence officer. to be honest, i think there are a lot of qualities and skills that people in the military have that are difficult to translate into the professional field

civilian side. so things like responsibility, initiative, leadership are sort of those intangible qualities that are hard to put on a resume, but that everybody in the military pretty much has. >> things that companies absolutely should value as far as employees go. peter, i'm going to talk to some of these companies. let's start, this is hacken sack university medical center. this is karen, one of the top medical -- medical centers in the new york area. what your looking for as far as recruitment today? >> we really have found that a lot of the military jobs easily correlate over to the jobs that we have on our medical center and they're knowledge and expertise certainly can be useful to our medical center. >> how many jobs do you have available? >> approximately 250 jobs are available at our medical center and a lot of different areas, mostly clinical. we also do business, i.t., finance. >> you've got the army jacket on. what job are you looking for? >> a cook. >> okay. let's talk after the segment. i've got some jobs for you.

rollout that he's very interested in 2016, if not all in. and i think that the questions centered around the battle inside the republican party and there will be one for the heart of the gop. he is making the case that he's a results-oriented conservative and he's getting it done and there are others who are pushing back saying that he may not be conservative enough or tied to principles enough. christie made it clear on election night that he was sending a message to his party that you have to win in order to govern. and i think that was the message he was trying to get out on all those sunday show appearances. >> good morning. he also was talking about nudging the president, level with the american people. listen to this. >> when you make a mistake, you should own up to it and apologize for it. i think people give you credit for that. the fact is that the president didn't tell the truth.

it turned out not to be true that people could keep their insurance policies no matter what, that they could keep their doctor no matter what. and we need to confront that issue and the president needs to deal with it in a head-on way. >> i think it's beyond apologizing. do you think the president has gone as far as he will go when it comes to apologies? do you expect another one this week? >> maybe not in the form of an apology, but in the form of a delay. it's very possible. in that interview with nbc, he said they're looking at a variety of options. then they come to the point here where they get to the point where the web site is not going to be fully operational by the end of november as they once promised. and they may have to say, listen, we have to delay this. there are a number of democrats not just red state democrats up for reelection, a number saying that's what has to happen. so we're going to wait and see what develops this week. this is a big week for obamacare with the enrollment numbers coming officially at the end of the week. >> speak of enrollment numbers,

did you see in north dakota, so far 35,000 lost their insurance. 35,000. they've been able to enroll 30 so far. also i understand darrell issa will have another hearing. i believe it will be wednesday. they asked the chief u.s. technology officer, todd park, todd, do you mind coming over and sitting down with us to explain what the heck went haywire? the white house said, sorry, he's too biggy working on the web site. darrell issa asked somebody in his back office, can we get a subpoena for this guy? is he going to show up, do we know? >> we don't know officially yet. but i expect there will be a lot of testimony this week and you will likely hear from somebody at the administration and more of this, how did this get to this point and how much money has been spent. there is still really not a definitive figure as of yet. >> that's too bad. let's move on to something else. >> that's right. so we have netanyahu on one side and john kerry on the other. brian alluded to earlier that

they're just not on the same page when it comes to reaching a deal in terms of nuclear arms. take a listen. >> we are not blind and i don't think we're stupid. i think we have a pretty strong sense of how to measure whether or not we are acting in the interest of our country and of the globe and particularly of our allies like israel and gulf states and others in the region. >> this is a huge change from the pressure that was applied on iran through the effective sanctions regime which brought them to the table in the first place. in other words, iran gave practically nothing and it gets a hell of a lot. that's not a good deal. >> yeah. they'd be allowed to continue to enrich uranium and other things over six months as they explore other option. that seems like a big win for iran. >> this is a huge split between the u.s. and israel, at least right now. and that's why you saw u.s.

officials going to israel on sunday to try to mend some of this. there is a big difference in opinion on this tentative interim deal with iran and you heard the prime minister of israel express that. listen, this is the newspaper in israel, how they described this developing tension. quote, if there were a map for diplomatic storms, the national weather service would be putting out a hurricane warning right now. and given that the turbulence is being caused by an issue long deemed to be critical to israel's very existence, we may actually be facing a rare category 5 flare-up, a super storm of u.s.-israeli relations. this is a big deal. >> big deal. france said there is no -- it's not stiff enough or tough enough. they're the ones that looks like blew up the whole thing. >> it is. france was the one that said, this is not working. it's not working for us. it's not work for israel.

and they kind of blew up the p-5 plus one negotiation. so they start over and try to get it through. the fact that you're probably going to have congress step in here and say, we need additional sanctions against iran and that the administration would be in a position to defend an agreement with iran that is opposite of what israel sees and likely what congress behind me will want to step into, that's going to be a precarious position for a pretty vulnerable administration at this point. >> looks like a serious miscalculation on the part of the obama administration. all right. bret, we'll watch you tonight at 6:00 p.m. eastern time, "special report" with bret baier. >> have a good day. >> you as well. >> well, we have a fox news alert for you. brand-new video into "fox & friends." the damage caused by one of the strongest storms on record. officials now fear as many as 10,000 people are dead. but this morning there is a glimmer of hope among the

destruction. a woman gave birth to a baby girl after clinging to a post to survive the storm. david piper live in bangkok, thailand with the very latest that. is a glimmer of hope. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning to you all. president obama has vowed that america will help the philippines in its time of need. we understand marines have flown in to the center of the destruction and also u.s. ships and aircraft are being used in a massive relief operation there now. it was early year feared that vietnam would be hit. a mass evacuation of its coast line was launched. but it seems to have missed the worst of it and the typhoon has made landfall between vietnam and china and been downgraded to a tropical storm. it's turning into a humanitarian disaster in the philippines. hundreds of thousands of people are in desperate need of food and medical supplies.

as we get ready to celebrate our veterans who bravely fought for our freedom, we have to ask, are they being treated the way they should be when they return from duty? here with insight and providing the research, peter johnson, jr. >> brian, they're not being treated the way they should be treated, but it was a busy veterans weekend of observances as the surviving members of the famed doolittle raid on japan that inspired americans after pearl harbor met for their final reunions this weekend. sadly as we mark the 60th anniversary of the korean birth, world war ii veterans groups are mark their final reunions. this day also marks the service

of all those -- there is ollie north -- who served in vietnam, iraq and afghanistan, whether or not they saw combat. so when we meet veterans, today we're going to thank them for their service, but the real question becomes, is our government doing good service to them? unfortunately, it appears they're not. let's take a look at this, what the backlog is. >> for example, if you're a veteran, you need medical attention, you got 705,000-plus claims that are still pending. how does that happen? 57% of those claims pending over 125 days. and they're going to take over our health care. >> especially for wounded warrior, people who have given feet and fingers and e portions of their lives to our country and now they have to wait months and months and months. >> there were 2.5 million who served over the last 12 years and many of them need medical attention. >> it's an astounding number.

we're just pulled to the edges in terms of our service, our national guard, everybody in this country. i saw something that i thought was really cool on this veterans day. veterans don't get what they need. a lot of them, based on a survey, don't know what they should be getting in terms of social security benefits. so if you look at social security benefits, at age 62, you would be entitled to $1,125. this is a sample. at age 66, $1,500. so if you take the money early, 1125. if you waited and you have the capacity to wait 'til 70, almost 2 thousand dollars in benefits and a larger survivor benefits. one company today only have put up free for military members and veterans a free, like $50 report they can input all their information. so you go to social security for veterans.com, social security for veterans.com.

blames republicans for stoking consumer fears and confusion. but the charges that the healthcare reform law is causing insurers to cancel policies. the opinion quotes mr. obama clearly spoke when he said that, end quote. michael goodwin is a pulitzer prize winner journalist who voted for president obama in 2008 and a fox news contributor. always a fresh, honest take in your writing. what is to come of the "new york times" if they continue to essentially be a cover for what's going on in the administration when it comes to obamacare? >> well, i should mention, too, i have two dogs in this hunt because i worked at the "new york times" for many years. so i've seen it from both sides. the times that i worked for no longer exists. this is now a propaganda sheet for the president. when they say he misspoke instead of calling it what it is, a lie, what they're doing is covering up for him to make him look better and we've stein it time and time again.

i argue this is bad for the country. it's bad for the president. it's bad for the country. it's bad for the times, of course. but this idea that we can't even cover the facts. we have to cover up for the president no matter what he says or does always to make him look good, i think harms the nation because the times is still a very powerful instrument in journalism, a lot of media organizations take their cues from the times if the times covers it, it's news. if they don't cover it, it's not news. and so when the times in this way and editorial page goes out to cover up for the president's mistakes and lies, tries to downplay it, attack republicans all the time, it's crossed over from being a liberal newspaper to being a propaganda arm of the president. >> why this president? you say this wasn't the times you knew. >> i think the standards have just changed there. i think the paper -- the paper has always been somewhat liberal, which that's fine. i work for a more conservative paper. but the idea that you turn it

into partisanship, that you're always out there fronting for the president, it's no longer about the political ideology. it's about the person. it's about an anti-attack always on the other side, as though you're defending the person rather than the principle. >> this is offending those who lost their policies by calling what the president said a misspeaking -- he misspoke. but when it comes to benghazi, fast and furious, irs, targeting conservatives, other news outlets have come forward and finally put real information out there. are they at risk for suffering a true credibility crisis here? >> i believe they are. i believe that -- it's that old joke, who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes? the country can see what's happening with obamacare. the country sees these stories of individuals who have lost their healthcare despite what the president promised. they've seen the prices go up. they've seen all kinds of confusion about what's really going on. for the times to blame it on

republicans, say basically it's overblown and that the president just misspoke, i think passes over into an area where nobody believes the times and therefore, that hurts the president. i argued that the president should tell the times, look, at least be somewhere be better for both of us. i think he's sort of stayed above gravity because of this kind of support that doesn't admit any facts. >> are you saying the president himself could be harmed by the "new york times" actually defending him? >> i think in this case you take an example of this where the times downplays the significance of something like this. it destroys the credibility of the paper, but also makes the president look foolish because it's as though you can't admit the truth, you can't see the truth. nobody can know the truth. the president walks on water. that's not what we expect of our president. we know our presidents are humans. obamacare himself apologized somewhat.
