1:00 am
these unions bashing him. on fox business tonight at 8:00. hello, everyone, i'm dana perrino. i think that's greg gutfeld. it's 5:00 in new york city, and this is "the five." 12 more days until we hit the president's self-imposed deadline of getting healthcare.gov working. the administration promises the website will be up and running by november 30th, and by up and rupp i meaning, they mean 80% of the time. jay carney was asked about that today. >> you're looking at that statistic simplistically because the issue here is can we make the website function effectively for the vast majority of users who go on it? >> now, very few democrats have called for heads to roll over
1:01 am
this mess, but one of them is robert gibbs, the president's former press secretary. >> i think they're going to have to hold somebody accountable for the botched rollout and the website not working. somebody at hhs or a group of people. >> you think somebody should lose their job? >> i think if this were to happen in the private sector, somebody probably would have already lost their job. i think the only way to restore confidence going forward is to make sure whoever was in charge of this isn't in charge of the long-term health care. >> 39 house democrats voted with republicans on the keep your plan act. facing that kind of opposition, tonight the president is going to try to rally his troops with a conference call from the white house. let me first play this sound bite from minority leader pelosi and then david plouffe from the sunday shows who they think the democrats don't have a problem. listen to this. >> i don't think you can tell what will happen next year, but i will tell you this, democrats stand tall in support of the affordable care act. we have great candidates who are
1:02 am
running. >> we could be in a much different place three or four months from now. no doubt this is an enormously challenging time. i think the political notion is the republican platform is getting rid of health care. millions of people will be signed up. it's an impossibility. >> i'm going to start with bob today because it was your birthday last week. you've had a great weekend. here you are hitting the ground running. do you believe speaker pelosi when she says that the democrats are standing tall and david plouffe when he says they've got nothing to worry about? >> one thing about democrats, they are very disdisciplined, a they had a caucus. the one that voted to the republican bill, most of whom are in marginal districts and so they did that. i think what plouffe said had some merit. i about the time you get to the elections, there will be millions of people who will be signed up for this thing, for better or for worse. that means you'll be taking on people who now have insurance because of the affordable care act. do you really want to take them on? >> well, eric, every day that
1:03 am
goes by, we get a little bit closer because of all the fixes that the administration is announcing. closer to what republicans were asking for in the first place. >> first regarding what plouffe said, bob, you're assuming millions will be signed up. i can't make that assumption, number one. number two, maybe millions will be thrown off their insurance because in the first month and a half, 5 million have been thrown out. the fixes. nancy pelosi said you have to pass it before you find out what's in it. she was right. over the weekend we find out this risk corridor. the risk corridor basically says if you're an insurance company, you're supposed to take on high-risk people. and for that risk, the government will back you up. if you take on people with preexisting conditions and it costs you a lot of money as an insurer, obama care will pay you on the backside of it. we didn't know it was even in there. we found out this weekend that's in there. now they're talking about the -- the administration's talking about going around the website
1:04 am
now. now, you can probably go at some point directly to the insurers which you and i talked about in the green room. >> that's what we wanted to do, too. >> you said 5 million now. the upside of more people losing their health insurance is much lower than the number who are going to get health insurance. >> incorrect. >> not according to the congressional budget office. so risk corridor. only in washington can they come up with language like that. >> it sounds like a stallone movie, "risk corridor." >> the government gets you coming and going. if you are a citizen and you sign up, you probably will qualify for a subsidy. and then if you are a business and you're having a hard time meeting those demands, then you also can get mope from the government. so at this point, isn't the government going to try and take everything over? >> the website is just a cough. the disease is liberalism. sooner or later they'll be able to get the cough syrup and cure the cough, but what's left is this tumor, this progressivism
1:05 am
which is eating america from the inside. i think what somebody has to make clear is they need to expose the direction of the white house, liberalism as flintstonian. right now if you spend the weekend the way i did, i used itunes, seamless, netflix and hulu for getting my food and movies. i had thousands and thousands upon options before me that i could use to make my life better. i chose the food from thousands of menus in the city. i picked the songs that i wanted and the movies that i watched. that's the way -- >> who's better than you? >> no, but what i'm saying is that is the direction of our country is options. and meanwhile, what you have is a white house that is going in the opposite direction, a one-size-fits-all model that is basically patterned after east germany. somebody has to point out that he is going in the wrong direction. >> they don't care. that's the problem. it's like me trying to shove last year's winter boots on ronan. they just don't fit. >> i thought you were going to talk about my jeans.
1:06 am
you putting on my jeans. let me ask you something about the president's poll numbers because across the board today, even after the president announced his fix on thursday, over the weekend, all the different polling groups came out and said the president's approval numbers continue to at least slide -- who knows if that will stabilize over this week. let's listen to senator gillibrand who was on yesterday who said they all knew about the lie all along. >> did you feel misled by obama? >> he should have just been more specific because the point is, if you're being offered a terrible health care plan, that the minute you get sick, you're going to have to go into bankruptcy, those plans should never be offered. >> so were you misled? >> he should have just been specific. no, we all knew. the whole point of the plan is to cover things people need, preventive care, birth control, pregnancy. >> i like her a lot. >> yeah. >> i think she is a breath of fresh air, but i am concerned that they don't understand the depth of anger across the
1:07 am
country about plans being canceled and the government saying, well, of course we knew, but it should just be okay? >> well, apparently america has become collateral damage for this administration. and whatever they need to do to achieve and effectuate their goals, they're going to do it. if some people suffer or get left behind or uninsured or get sick in the process, that is just what's necessary to get to their end game. that's what i think. 80% is not good enough. what if 80% of iphones worked, pacemakers worked? these are unacceptable standards they feel are okay to put on everyday americans. and it's dishonest. >> but the other thing is, a lot of these insurance plans that have been canceled, they should have been canceled, but they are substandard policies. and the fact of the matter is, people are going to find their choices are much bigger than they had before, and they're going to be much better insurance plans. >> that logic could be applied to my diet. you could actually say that you
1:08 am
know what? the choices that i make over the weekend are substandard, and you know better than me. that's what you're saying. >> what makes them substandard? a 60-year-old guy doesn't want to cover maternity leave? >> 60% of the bankruptcies in america are directly attributable to medical. >> no, answer my question. it's a good one. >> what obama care wants people to do is spread the risk around, spread the payments and spread the risks so people who have higher risks are being supported by people who have lower risks, higher payments. it's really socialism -- >> it's socialized medicine. >> -- and socialized medicine, absolutely, and it's never worked in anything. >> you guys keep coming back to the birth control thing. can you come up with -- >> why is an insurance plan that i pick, what i want, how i want to be insured, how much i want to pay on the deductible, why is that substandard? how are you going to tell me -- >> a good example of this is
1:09 am
that woman in florida who was highlighted as having her premiums go up by ten times when, in fact, she now says i'm glad that i did lose it. what i'm saying is there are a lot of substandard plans that are going to bankrupt people. and they have. 60% of the bankruptcies in america are directly attributed to health care costs. >> why did the president come out with this quasi-apology and say we're going to allow the insurance companies, you can sell your old plans back. that's fine. you can have them, which is what people wanted in the first place. >> pure choice. >> are there any issues over the last year, any white house policy that didn't come down to politics? >> no, i think he acted appropriately. i think he should have launched, but he didn't. >> right. was that a political decision? >> no. a political decision to go into syria? is that a popular political decision? not even close.
1:10 am
>> red line when he said it? i'm just saying i think that tonight's phone call, eric, with the partisan group, organizing for action, this is his army of people, he's going to try and rally them tonight from the white house. the people that have had their substandard plans canceled are not necessarily republican or democrat. i have no idea who they are. but i think that -- >> y'all seem to know the numbers pretty clearly. >> what? >> you don't have anything -- you know there are 5 million. >> well, yeah, but they're not identified as partisan. >> and not only that, bob -- >> how do you know that 5 million is the right number? >> because they have to report it. the companies have to report it. >> 5 million people reported? >> yes. >> so far. >> to who? >> they have to tell the administration who they're throwing out. so far. in six weeks or seven weeks, 5 million. >> my favorite thing is arguing facts. >> those are the numbers. >> can we just put this out there? i got invited three times to this conference call. >> are you joining?
1:11 am
>> no, i'm not joining. >> oh, my god. >> it's not a conference call. in today's day and age, it's a press conference. >> three times i've been asked to join. i'm not going to do it because the bottom line is there's no way this will work out for them. i don't want to hear it. until they get back to what we've been talking about from the beginning, allowing insurance companies to start selling across state lines and stop the mandate crap. especially when you're supposed to make a payment by january 1st. >> december 15th. >> 40 million uninsured. that's what you're saying. >> they're not going to collect on it. >> it's a different number every night that we talk about. it's 35 to 45. some have said 50 million people uninsured. even after obama care, 30 million will be uninsured. now you have people uninsured, responsible citizens, now they're insured, too. so what have we accomplished in this "a" block, i would say a lot. what do you think? >> what? i'm sorry. i was thinking about what i was
1:12 am
going to eat for dinner. >> you had a banner weekend. >> yeah, it was pretty good. >> what was the worst thing you ate? >> i had had ribs. i watched "pacific rim," which is an excellent film. it has, like, these dinosaurs fighting robots under water. it was incredible. >> wow, did you watch that sober? >> yes, i did. >> that sounds like a great movie. >> that's a great thing to put into this obama care discussion. >> i'm just trying to get out of here graciously. coming up, hollywood hot head alec baldwin went nuts on yet another reporter for trying to ask him questions. and also a fox exclusive interview with toronto's crack-smoking mayor. i can't believe i said that. >> i'm not an addict. i'm not an alcoholic. i'm not a drug addict. maybe some people are, but i'm not. >> ahead on "the five." ive." >> pretty funny. >> maybe some people are.
