4:00 pm
sunday." this is a fox report. tonight we know israel is dead set against any deal over iran's nuclear program. now word president obama has called benjamin netanyahu. wonder what that phone call was like. >> what was concluded in geneva last night is not a historic agreement. it's a historic mistake. >> strong words from our strongest ally in the middle east. israel wants war, specifically an end to uranium enrichment in iran. one topic not negotiated -- the fate of an american pastor.
4:01 pm
sitting in an iranian prison because of his christian faith. fox reports on the new outrage among people tirelessly working to bring him home. and disgusting comments from a cable news host, slamming former v.p. nominee sarah palin simply because he does not share her opinions. and apparently no consequences for his hateful words. >> the networks condoning those types of statements because there's been no punishment of the fella who said these words, that's hypocrisy. >> tonight, governor palin responds publicly for the first time. depending on with whom you listen, the tentative deal with iran to halt key parts of its controversial nuclear program is being called either an important first step or historic mistake. but either way, the u.s. and our european allies say the deal does achieve one key thing -- they say it stops tehran's ability to build a nuclear bomb
4:02 pm
temporarily. fox brought you the news live as it was happening late last night after days of marathon negotiations involving united states secretary of state john kerry and his counterparts from five world powers plus iran. now reaction pouring in from around the globe. our friends in the middle east, especially israel, far less optimistic about this agreement. we've confirmed with the white house that president obama has spoken by phone today with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. first, though, in this country, lawmakers from both political parties expressing their concerns about whether iran will stick to the deal, even some calling on congress to prepare tough sanctions just in case. >> well, let me first say that it's disappointing to me that iran is still going to be allowed to enrich while they're talking. i would have thought that that should be a prerequisite to any kind of talks. remember who we're dealing with. we're dealing with iran. they are one of the top supporters of terrorism around the world. this is providing them resources and money. and we should not take this
4:03 pm
lightly. we have to have a full dismantling if we want the world to be safer. >> again, 24 hours later, a little bit less than that, bipartisan pushback on this deal. secretary of state john kerry is trying to ease concerns people say they have about trusting iran. >> it's not based on trust. it's based on verification. you have to have a mechanism put in place whereby you know exactly what you're getting, and you know exactly what they're doing. and we believe we are at the beginning of putting that in place with iran. >> we have team fox coverage tonight. from middle east and more live from washington. jennifer, let's start with you. >> harris, after striking the interim deal in geneva, secretary of state john kerry flew straight to london. >> now the really hard part begins. that is the effort to get the comprehensive agreement which will require enormous steps in
4:04 pm
terms of verification, transparency, and accountability. >> reporter: here's what the deal includes -- it pauses construction of the iraq heavy water -- arak heavy-water reactor which could provide second grade plutonium, a second track to iran. it neutralizes iran's stockpile of urain to a concentration of 20%. it suspends enrichment above 5% for six months. iran agrees not to add centrifuges to the existing cascades but will leave in place centrifuges that will ton operate. it allows daily iaea inspections at fardow and natanz. >> these are substantial limitations which will help prevent iran from building a nuclear weapon. simply put, they cut off iran's most likely path to a bomb. >> in exchange for easily reversible concessions on the nuclear program, iran has gained time, legitimacy, relief from
4:05 pm
the economic sanctions and probably relief from an israeli strike. a hiej one for iran. >> reporter: the deal does not require iran to ship its current stockpile of enriched uranium out of the country which means the deal could be reversed. it's received a less than ringing endorsement from key democrats on capitol hill. >> i think that this is a marginal improvement. it did freeze some activity in place. and it continues the major sanctions in place. it's going to be costly on a continuing basis to them. >> iran's leadership just issued a statement that if congress impose imposes now sanctions, the deal is off. the former ministry of iran saying it does not believe it must stop activity at arak or a natanz. >> a key detail that you're flushing out from the what i wrote down from what you said, they can keep already enriched uranium. that's pertinent. as you said, they could restart at any time.
4:06 pm
we know the program has grown in the past decade. details on that? >> reporter: well, it's grown substantially. in 2003, iran had only 164 centrifuges. today it has 19,000. in 2003, iran approached the bush administration with an offer to talk about its nuclear program. that overture was rejected, and here we are today. the current deal does not require iran to destroy any of those centrifuges. iran gets to keep its relatively large stockpile of reactor-grade uranium which could still be converted into weapons-grade uranium in a matter of months. >> that's what israel is balking at, that this somehow sounds like a sweetheart deal for them. jennifer griffin, thank you. the white house is confirming president obama has spoken with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu about the deal. we're told the president reaffirmed the shared goal of preventing iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, but netanyahu is strongly against the deal. he calls it "a historic mistake." we have more live from jerusalem.
4:07 pm
leland, what are the people in jerusalem saying right now? >> reporter: the issue between the president and prime minister, two very different world views in terms of the iranian nuclear program. the leaders seem to be talking at each other, both privately and publicly. for the israelis, they say they do not want the iranians of to see the ability to get a bomb. that means dismantling their centrifuges, giving up their nuclear fuel, those things. for the united states, it seems enough the iranians don't actually have a bomb. which is a very distinct and different view of the world. prime minister netanyahu didn't pull any punches today after learning about this deal. >> last night is not a historic agreement, it's an historic mistake. so israel is not bound by this agreement. we cannot and will not allow a regime that calls for the destruction of israel to obtain
4:08 pm
the means to achieve this goal. >> reporter: a thinly veiled threat that israel reserves the right it take unilateral military action against the iranian nuclear facility. but that is really at the very edge of the envelope for the israeli air force in terms of their ability and capability tactically. also remember, it's a time that the israeli air force, the israeli military did not want to launch a strike because of the sensitive diplomatic negotiations going on now. the u.s. would very much like it avoid a strike. what's important here to note is how the allies that used to deal with things privately between the united states and israel, when there was a disagreement on matters, are now dealing with things very publicly and disagreeably in a vocal way in the media, on television, those kinds of things. in fact, in the past couple of days, the israeli foreign minister said if the americans are going to make deals like these, we may need to start searching for new allies. some very, very tough language here between what were bedrock friends. >> yeah, you know, you bring up
4:09 pm
such a good point because that -- that vocal nature of all of this, too, might be coming from the people, the citizens who live there. i'm curious to know what are average israelis saying about this? >> reporter: tough walk back these kinds of words. tonight the u.s. ambassador to israel went on the two major television newscasts to try to win over the hearts and minds of many israelis. whether that has worked or not, we'll have to see over the next couple of days. what is interesting here is that the prime minister is making a very dangerous political gamble in the sense that there are now a lot of israelis who are saying not only do we have a bad deal in the sense of a bad deal with iran, but we also have a bad deal in the sense that our prime minister has failed to get a good deal, and has also picked a very large fight with the united states. still, israel's best ally in the world. >> leland, thank you very much. so even as the obama administration is talking about how good an agreement this is with iran so far, there's
4:10 pm
somewhat of a major disagreement about what's actually in it. iran's president rouhani says the deal ends all sanctions against his country. and that it grants what he calls iran's right to continue enriching uranium. the white house flatly says none of that is true. >> translator: no matter what interpretations are given, iran's right to enrichment has been recognized in the text of the agreement. for that reason, i announce to the iranian nation that iran's enrichment activity will continue as before. >> that's a different take. iran's foreign minister has a warning for our u.s. congress tonight. do not go ahead with any new economic sanctions saying if new penalties are imposed, the deal is off. some of our european allies say that they welcome the deal with iran. the british foreign secretary, william hague, flew back to london from geneva. he thanked the united states for its commitment with secretary of state john kerry by his side. >> it's a very important opportunity for the future, and i think it indicates the policy
4:11 pm
of pressure through sanctions and diplomacy through negotiations in which the united states and the united kingdom have been strong partners for so long. >> germany's foreign minister described the deal as a turning point after difficult times. spain, norway, and sweden expressed hope for a broader solution in the future. there's new outrage tonight over one issue that did not come up during those talks in geneva. the future of our american pastor abadini. i asked about this as the news was breaking last night. he was put in prison in iran more than a year ago for practicing his christian faith. he was opening churches and spreading the word. the pastor's family is in idaho, they fear for his safety more than ever now. he's living in one of the most dangerous prisons in iran, facing life threatening conditions daily. there was hope the united states would use leverage of these talks to help him go free. a national security council spokesperson confirms that
4:12 pm
didn't happen. >> the idea that we cut a deal stow speak, we've reached this agreement with the iranians and did not secure the release of americans held hostage in iran which is exactly what's happening here is outrageous. this was a historic blunder of huge proportions with significant repercussions. we're using the sanctions on iran while they continue to torture american citizens held in their jails. >> pastor said is serving an eight-year sentence. by the way, this particular part of the story was all over social media last night when the story was breaking. it continues today when the fox news political insiders join us later this hour. we'll go in deep, we'll talk about what was missed, what was in the deal, so on and so forth. also, brand new reaction from capitol hill concerning the latest batch of obama care setbacks. and former alaska governor sarah palin responding publicly for the first time to vile

4:31 pm
>> true. >> we're going to look at numbers in a second to see where the president is in all of this. but i want to start, doug, with iran. it is not obama care. so the talking points now will shift. at least for a little bit for this administration that's been so plagued. >> this is good news for the president because as you correctly suggest, harris, it shifts the focus. however, let's be clear. this is just a deal that freezes the action. it doesn't preclude the enrichment of uranium, it doesn't force them to defuse the centrifuges that they've built. and we have to insist that the inspections are as intrusive as the iranians have agreed. we saw in north korea that that was problematic. we're not sure if this deal will hold. >> pat, reportedly, the administration has been working behind the scenes for over a year on trying to get a deal like this. let's talk legacy for this president. will this be how president obama is remembered with this iranian
4:32 pm
deal, or tell still be obama care? >> look, the country always focuses first on domestic affairs, obama care, i'm afraid, is an ongoing disaster. i want to say this -- with iran, if it gets what tell do with a nuclear weapon -- look, i was there in 1979. i went through this thing. we've been at war as a country for 30 years. they killed 241 marines. they've been doing ieds. the only time they stopped was after we were on the border with iran and they conquered iraq and were faterrified for two years. if it produces a nonnuclear iran, that will be great. if it doesn't and israel has to go to war, it's going to be a disaster. it's going to be the question who lost the middle east. >> john, let's talk about israel and all of this. we're getting some readout on what benjamin netanyahu, prime minister of israel, and the president talked about during that phone call today. the president trying to reassure him that they're all on the same page. your thoughts? >> well, they're not on the same
4:33 pm
page. i think what is really hurting israel and going to hurt this deal is the secret nature of these talks that kerry's people and the iranians had without our partners even know being it. england germany, france, russia, china, have found in the last two weeks -- >> why are they saying they're at the news conference, at the side of john kerry? >> america's the big dog in these things. they all end up following us, but they don't like it. obviously israel's not a part of it. they don't like it. i'll tell you what i'm worried about -- secret side deals that kerry may make to grease this deal between us and the iranians -- >> like what? doug, like what? >> like to relax the inspections and provide a level of economic insistence to relax the sanctions even further than they've should have. money -- pat's right. money in the bank. >> i'm glad pat brought this up.
4:34 pm
pat, the president of iran comes out and basically calls everybody else a liar. he says what's in this deal is all of the sanctions have been wiped away. is there any possibility that rouhani is telling the truth? >> let's go back to -- you know the problem with this is that as i like to call it, is that the desperation to do a deal on the part of this president and this secretary of state, whatever the cost as president has been, frankly on, bailiff dwrous iran. and he's turned an eye from the democracy movement and whatever else. he keeps thinking he can do these things with anybody. and i think they want to deal at all costs -- and god knows what they really promised. >> and if we relax sanctions and their economy regenerates, which is what they're noting, that means more money for the same regime that funds hezbollah and hamas and did the eids. and is an enemy of the united states. and -- >> for 30 years. >> and israel, right? now they're a richer government,
4:35 pm
a richer military. are they going to go and finance more terrorism against us? >> or will they simply because they haven't been told to give up the uranium that they've already enriched which means they can turn the switch back on. >> that's exactly the point. they can turn the switch back on. there's some reports that the uranium that they've enriched to 20% and they're going to degrade that they'll be able to reconstitute it. harris, we don't know that this is anything more than a convenient weigh station for both sides. it makes me very nervous. >> i do want to say this, i said this coming interest the segment, that the ink is drying. that's something that we talk about things still in motion here. this is still being talked about. this deal is still in motion. that's what you gentlemen are talking about. pat, we're talking about side deals. can anybody talk secretary kerry out of that? >> i -- i think the desperation to do a deal is so great, and i think their instincts are so bad that they can't. here's the problem with the
4:36 pm
politics of it. the democrats are already getting wiped out on obama care and frightened, what will happen if the jewish community and supporters of israel really turn on the switch in terms of this and put pressure on them over iran because in a few months, you know, they -- they may have a nuclear weapon. >> let me say this. john kerry scares me. i don't trust him. i've dealt with him on an exact situation similar to this 20 years ago where he was negotiating with the vietnamese about the p.o.w. issue. he did secret deals with vietnam and undercut the p.o.w. lobby in the united states. and if he did it, that's his m.o. then, it could be his m.o. today. >> i want us because we're talking about him, secretary john kerry today, was trying to reassure israel that they are safer now because of this deal. let's watch that and then talk more.
4:37 pm
>> we will now be able to have greater inspection, greater knowledge, greater restraint. and that will expand the amount of time it would take for them to break out and create a nuclear weapon. that makes israel safer. that makes the region safer. >> doug, you're israel now. what's your response? >> well, the response is you hope and pray that what john kerry said is true. but you know through your own work, your own efforts that bottom line, there are secret plants -- secret facilities in iran that we do not have under control. that's what you know. >> there are a couple things i want to get to here. we may have to do the math at the commercial break. before that i want to include our viewers. we solicited their comments about pastor abadini. his sentence, eight years for spreading christianity inside iran. matt, right wing tip says it's unspeakable the pastor wasn't
