couldn't be any worse. as we all enter the peak of thanksgiving travel. a deadly storm is hammering the country with rain, snow, and ice. officials say it killed more than a dozen people, most of them in texas. and where it is too warm for snow, there is a threat of violent weather as the storm streams to the east. even if you're not in the bath, there is a good chance you will feel it's effects. airport delays could back up travel from coast to coast. the number of people planning to fly this thanksgiving is at a five year high. let's take a look at the crowded skies across the country. airls added extra flights for this busy travel week. many folks are trying to outrun the storm. some say they're just about fed up with the delays. others are trying to make the

flights, more passengers, and higher fairs. that is a recipe for frustration. many arrivals have been delayed, departures still on time supposedly, but that could change as we have a domino effect later in the day. the flight that's arrive late or get canceled, they could not take off as scheduled. cancellations,le 7 so far across the u.s. today because of the storm. we had 1312 cancel nationwide since sunday spop this week, so far, more than 1,000 flights cancels and more bad weather. it is raining right now. we could get heavy rain tonight and tomorrow here and snow to the northeast as well. >> before they go to grandmas house, what do folks need to know? >> get to the airport very early. there could be long security lines and a lot of crowds. a lot of people will be trying to travel. call your airline first and find out what the situation is.
12:04 pm
if you're flight is delayed or canceled, you need to know that. you also need to know that some of the fees have been waived on the major airlines because they're trying to get you on the airlines one day earlier to avoid the big rush on wednesday so they waived the change fees. you can go ahead and change your day without a $100 or $200 fee. the best advice probably comes from this travel industry expert. >> stay calm and get to the airport early. normally we say two hours, but with this weather, i would say closer to three hours getting to the airport early, check before you leave, and just stay calm. >> and that stay calm part may come in very, very handy, john? >> thank you, it's not just the snow giving folks headaches. in warmer states to the south, there are big fears of flooding and tornadoes. team fox coverage with rick in the extreme weather center.

12:06 pm
of it. back behind this, pittsburgh, wednesday, parts of north georgia looking at the snow because the cold air comes in behind it. this is completely done by the time we get towards thursday morning. if you can travel by road, hold off until thursday if you can. everything will be fine. tomorrow is the rough day. here is this yellow color here if is about two to three inches of rain accumulating. we'll see possibly three to six inches of snow across the central appalachians. and very heavy rain all along the coast, the i-95 corridor, and significant know back towards buffalo and pittsburgh. 12 to 18 inches of snow. but these guys are accustomed to snow. they have the equipment and they're more use todd this than we are across some of the big cities. we'll see big delays all of the way through tomorrow.
