5:00 pm
so we'll see you tomorrow night 7:00 p.m. right here on "the record." go do gretawired.com and tell us what you thought of tonight's show. good night from washington. tonight -- >> the gop has always protected the rich. but recently it's begun attacking the poor, too. >> will nbc news move against al sharpton for blatantly dishonest on-air behavior? we'll analyze. we celebrate the birth of jesus and the season of giving. >> espn says it will not run that ad because it mentions jesus. we'll tell you all about this brand new controversy. what will you do about benghazi? why isn't benghazi at the top of your issue? >> well, i'm certainly not here to talk about it.
5:01 pm
>> that is -- that is the middle east. dennis miller on a possible uprising by the american people against cowardly politicians. >> lib why's like right in the middle of the middle east. caution, you are about to enter the no-spin zone. "the factor" begins right now. hi, i'm bill o'reilly. thank you for watching us tonight. president obama shaking a dictat dictator's hand, the subject of this evening's talking points memo. some americans are upset that he shook the hand of cuba's dictator castro yesterday. castro, of course, the brother of fidel. both killers and tie rans. more than 50 years, the brothers terrorized cuba causing millions to flee to the usa. believe me many of them are not happy about the engagement with
5:02 pm
raul castro and also unhappy is senator john mccain. >> just gives raul some propaganda to continue to prop up his dictorial brewal regime. that's all. >> should he not have done it? >> of course not. why should you shake hands with somebody who's keeping americans in prison? what's the point? chamberlain shook hands with hitler. >> we disagree with the senator of arizona. a goal of any american president should be to alleviate the suffering of people. those in cuba included. president obama has not lessened sanctions against cuba and treating castro with a measure of respect, he leaves the door open for future negotiations, maybe we'll get the american out there. in 1972, president nixon flew to beijing, developed a relationship. back then the chinese were more
5:03 pm
brutal than today where they're responsible for millions of people being slaughtered. nevertheless, nixon did what was right for america and reduced tensions with china. 1985, president reagan developing a relationship with soviet leader gorbachev. he was a tyrant and reagan did what was best for his country. again, the president's primary responsibility is solving problems and there are many ways to do that. spitting in the eye of dictators and tyrants is a good photo-op but doesn't get anywhere. okay? so that's why i'm not critical of the iran situation. yeah, the nuke deal is flimsy. no question. if iran chaets or does not continue to downgrade did nuke weapons program the united states is in a much stronger position to confront them. as yoko ono said, give peace a chance but we have to watch our backs. right, yoko?
5:04 pm
raul kcastro is a threat. when they die, they'll throw off communism i prediblgt and return to sanity. all any president can do is reason with the oppressors keeping the pressure on. and that's the memo. the new budget deal and whether president obama is perceived for being weak for shaking castro's hand? james rosen and carl cameron. so what's the business in d.c. over the deal? are people upset about this? >> it's amazing. it didn't get the attention a similar gesture ten years might have gotten. if you're active and outspoken, it hit like a thunderbolt. you quoted john mccain of arizona. when the leader of the free world shakes the bloody hand of a dictator like castro, it is a propaganda coup. a number of things were
5:05 pm
incorrect in what you -- in your talking points. for example, you said that the obama administration has not lessened sanctions against the castro regime but over the course of the first obama, there's relaxations in the policy of feeler gestures to see if the cubans would -- >> but that was about tourism mostly and other things. it wasn't economic. we still -- their products cannot be sold here and killing them. that's the main product. okay. whatever. >> depends on how you define a sanction, bill, but you also made the references to richard nixon opening china, ronald reagan pursuing gorbachev and also the iran nuclear deal and saying that it's necessary for the commander in chief to do what's in the interest of the united states national security and those three cases of china, russia and iran we're talking about major powers. there is no impetus for president obama to shake the hand of a leader of an island like cuba. >> we have an american as mccain
5:06 pm
referenced, an american in prison there, went over to cuba far website for a group and they threw him in jail. >> that's the point. >> if i have to shake a thug's hand to get the guy out, i'm probably going to do that. go ahead. >> if we see in the next few weeks or so that alan gross imprisoned in cuba for four years is swiftly released then we can ascribe it to the hand shake but that's speculation of your part. >> you have to try, rosen. go ahead. >> and at the risk of consuming carl cameron's time here in this segment -- >> don't do that. >> you attributed peace a chance to ono. properly as all fans know, it's a lennon-mccartney composition but in fact a lennon composition. >> you walked into that. you don't want to argue with rosen. cameron, look, the budget deal, paul ryan, you know, worked with patty murray the democrat and came up with a budget deal that
5:07 pm
ryan says, you know, you have to have going forward. but then we hear thunder on the right. so what's the inside story? >> the thunder on the right and thunder on the left. part of the problem is this is a deal cut by two people, the two budget chiefs in the house and senate and now 535 other members of the congress that have like 2 days to study this and then vote on it and race out of town for the holidays. for a lot of folks it smacks of the cram the work in and deal with the consequences down the road. the details of this fall short on both sides. basically, it's a two-year deal, would alleviate some of the so-called sequester cuts and raises fees on air travel and other things. cbo says it reduces the deficit $85 billion but republicans say, wait a minute. if there's not serious spending cuts and reform, why do away with the budget act with fiscal discipline in the sequester? and then the democrats say, wait, they want the unemployment
5:08 pm
assurance push forward and close corporate loopholes. so the left and the right on the extremes are angry about it. >> all right. i think it's going to pass. would you say i'm wrong on that? >> well, there's a little it buffalo 0bit of a mystery of mitch mcconnell. it will be close. the leaders on both sides say it's a squeaker but they think it will pass. >> i think it will and i think ryan -- i think what ryan is doing -- i i respect ryan. he's saying, this is the best deal we can get now and if we do it, our chances of winning back the senate and increasinging our margin in the house next year go way up and then when republicans regain that power, they handcuff barack obama for two years of the administration. >> there's a little bit of that. it's going to antagonize the tea party and go after incumbents
5:09 pm
just as it will the far left. congress isn't happy but better than the gridlock and shutdowns that have been prevailing for a few years. >> all right. gentlemen, thank you. we appreciate it and yoko ono. next, dishonesty by al sharpton on msnbc. will his boss do anything about it? analyze in just a few minutes.
5:12 pm
in the impact segment tonight, controversy at nbc news. courtesy of al sharpton. in march 2012, while covering the trayvon martin case, the" today" show ran a recording of the 911 call. >> looks like he's up to no good. looks like he's black. >> well, that tape was doctored to make it look like zimmerman
5:13 pm
was a racist. here's what zimmerman said to the 911 operator. >> this guy looks like he's up to no good or he's on drugs or something. it's raining and he's just walking around, looking about. >> okay. and this guy, is he white, black or hispanic? >> he looks black. >> now after that blatant dishonesty is exposed, they fired three pe right thing to d. fast forward to last august 13th when al sharpton accused me of attacking poor americans. >> bill o'reilly gone back to one of his favorite talking points. attacking the poor. here's his latest rant about people on food stamps. >> when obama administration is encouraging parasites to come out and, you know, take as much as they can with no remorse and this is how a country declines. this is how we become a weak nation. >> parasites. the poor are parasites. we've heard these kinds of
5:14 pm
attacks before. welfare queen. the 7%. makers versus takers. >> well, what sharpton did not tell his audience is that he and his editors doctored that clip by cutting out the context. my comments were specifically aimed at just one person -- a guy named jason greenslate who fox news exposed as gaming the system. here's the full context of what i said. >> time for investigation segment. the food stamp scandal. right now, 15% of the entire american population receiving food subsidies and the year 2000, just 6% were getting those. some of those people are conning the system. last week, fox news ran a one-hour special on the situation. john roberts tracked down a surfer in california eating on the taxpayers dime. >> the food stamp program designed to be for a point in your life where you're, you know, down, things weren't going
5:15 pm
well. it is not, quote, a point in your life. it's kind of this is life for me. >> yeah. this is how i live, man. chicks, doing my thing. you know? this is the way i want to live and i don't see anything changing. i got a paycheck coming in and i qualify. >> this guy's a parasite. my contention is that the obama administration is encouraging parasites to come out and, you know, take as much as they can with no remorse and this is how a country declines. this is how we become a weak nation. >> so sharpton made it seem like i was talking about all of the poor in the country, not just one guy. we brought it to nbc's attention. they did nothing, nothing at all. now, we have a new deceit on late nelson mandela. here's what sharpton and karen finney said on friday night. >> so, in terms of history, when they -- you have bill o'reilly saying he was a communist --
5:16 pm
>> last night. let me show that. he said about nelson mandela last night on fox -- >> 95 years old. nelson mandela, i spent sometime in south africa. he was a communist this man. he was a communist. >> yeah. >> all right? >> but once again sharpton edited the tape cutting off the context. here's the complete point. >> here's the problem. there is common ground among republicans. i'm an independent. i know both parties pretty well. however, the media republicans very conservative talk radio people are very ideological and ripping up people like john mccain, you know, rhinos. every day. banging, just killing them. and that's filters into the folks and the republican people, people who vote republican and let's give you an example. ideology has to leave the building next year and in 2016 or you will have president
5:17 pm
hillary clinton. nelson mandela just died. i don't know whether you're aware. but 95 years old. >> i was. >> nelson mandela, i spent sometime in south africa. he was a communist. this man. >> yeah. >> he was a communist. all right? but he was a great man. what he did for his people was stunning. the sacrifices that he made. he could have repudiated and got out of the prison. he wouldn't do it. he was a great man but he was a communist. so -- but i would never attack nelson mandela. i mean, i told bishop tutu i disagree with you and mr. mandela. he is that way, as well. i respect you. why can't you guys in the republican party bring that to the fore? >> so now we once again ask nbc news, what will you do about sharpton? who's obviously a dishonest person. i mean, it's insane what this guy is doing on nbc's air.
5:18 pm
so far, nbc news has not answered the question. and there is no question. they have their hands full. msnbc commentator martin bashir forced to resign last week and causing controversy all over the place. nbc news is a long history of distinguished reporting and now employing people bringing disgrace to the operation. they should do something. directly ahead, thoughts on the story. and later, dennis mill tore talk about the architect of obama care. those reports after these messages.
5:21 pm
5:22 pm
from miami, mr. goldberg. bernie, you're the president of nbc universal. all right? >> uh-huh. >> full power over sharpton. what do you do? >> well, i'd fire him but i wouldn't have hired him in the first place but that doesn't mean that the people that run nbc or comcast, by did way, the parent company, are going to do that. every important democratic politician running for high office has to go to harlem and kiss al sharpton's ring. okay? every one of them. they're concerned about him. they have to pay him respect. so, if powerful politicians are doing that, are we supposed to believe that phil griffin of msnbc or the people running comcast aren't equally, i'll use the word afraid of him. i think they are. because who the hell know what is he's going to say the next day after he gets fired or what he's going to do?
5:23 pm
they're not going to take that chance, i don't think. >> if sharpton is just a commentator like bashir, you think he'd -- did he do enough to be fired, mr. kurtz? putting the pressure and color aside. did he do enough to be fired in your opinion? >> i would fire the producer to begin with, with the editing mistakes. that's attempts to deceive viewers and he was a communist and didn't let you continue the thought on tape to say he was a great man. now, al sharpton has always worn two hats on msnbc. activist, some says racial ambulance chaser. he was involved in the trayvon martin murder case and then went on msnbc and took one side. so clearly, he has treated very, very differently than most talk show hosts. >> okay. but again, if we -- if nbc is
5:24 pm
not going to do anything, bernie, this means all standards have collapsed at that news organization, have they not? >> well, you understand that there was a former president of nbc news who said we do news here on this side of the street and they over there at msnbc are our editorial page. i say, fine. fair enough. and then i say, is that the kind of editorial page you'd want? because it shouldn't be the kind of editorial page you'd want. let me pick on -- >> let me just challenge. hard news and commentary both under the umbrella of journalism. >> right. >> both in the journalism realm. this is journalism. there are rules, there are rules. you cannot distort either the facts or the commentary. you can't do that. we have proven that sharpton does this routinely.
5:25 pm
we just showed you two more egregious things. >> yeah. that's a good point. let me take your viewers into the factory and on a tour of how sausage is made. what howard said is absolutely correct. first of all, sharpton is responsible for what's on his show. his name is on it. it's his show. he is responsible. no question about that. >> i agree with that. >> but sharpton doesn't go into the editing room. i'm guessing he doesn't know where it is at msnbc. this is almost always done, almost always by young, liberal unethical producers who didn't grow up in a world of anything resembling traditional journalism and what they're doing is what they believe the culture at msnbc expects of them. what they're doing is what the president -- >> so that phil griffin should be fired then? because if you're right -- >> howard said that the producer
5:26 pm
should be fired. i would crank it up a step. phil griffin sets the tone. >> but there's more than that. howard, here's the crunch time now. the one he was on with was this woman finney, right? karen finney. she wrote me a letter of apology today. all right? >> because? >> because she said -- >> never been in soweto. >> they showed a letter that i was. i accept the apology. did sharpton apologize? >> no. >> no. >> finney made a mistake n. a different category. >> i don't want to tar everybody with the same brush. there are hosts, journalists at the network you may not agree with -- >> you don't have to tar them? what about the leadership? what about the leadership, howard? >> give me half a sentence to get to that. who do their work honestly even though you, i, the audience may not axwree with them but where i hold the msnbc leaders aaccountable is setting a tone and something like martin bashir issues a -- spew forth that kind
5:27 pm
of venom against sarah palin and not punished for three weeks until he lost his job. the tone is set at the tone. the mistakes are made and that's where i would fault the management of network. >> i don't expect nbc to do anything. i'll tell you what. they're losing credibility, bernie. the last word on it. losing credibility now. i think they are. >> here's the last word. i'm wondering if you considered this possibility. that they have come up with a strategy over there and the strategy is, say really nasty, unethical things about bill o'reilly trying to set the record straight and get more publicity on fox than ever. >> it doesn't matter. you have to have 12 people watching. >> i heard that argument a million times. tough have a product. okay? they have no product. that's why their ratings are terrible. >> msnbc spends hours talking about fox. if fox news went off the air, there's a test pattern. >> they don't have a product
5:28 pm
there and not succeeded in 17 years. gentlemen -- >> you are the product. you're the product over there, bill. >> i'm not worried about them getting viewers. i'm outraged that nbc news and nbc universal is powerful as they are, as powerful as they are allow sharpton and this stuff to go on. it's disgrace. i have to expose them. gentlemen, thank you. the espn network refusing an ad that mentions jesus. this is brand new and we'll tell you about it. and then the man behind obama care, we hope you stay tuned for those reports.
5:32 pm
continuing battle over christmas and jesus. hospital in st. louis wanted to take out a tv ad on espn that said this. >> each christmas, thousands in our community send messages of hope to sick and injured xhirn who may not be able to come home for the holidays. we celebrate the birth of jesus and the season of giving. bringing hope to the many children, parents and families we serve. our patients are filled with hope as they receive a message each day from the treasure chest beneath our tree of hope. >> they made me smile. >> help us reveal god's healing presence this christmas. send your message of hope. >> but espn said they would not run that ad because the line celebrate the birth of jesus and god's healing message are
5:33 pm
problematic. their word to the network. that ad has run on other networks. espn would not provide a spokesman this evening but joining us from phoenix, arizona, douglas newpeer. have you guys talked to espn? >> no, bill. we haven't talked to them but i would say to say there's too much jesus in this christmas message of hope is like saying there's too much ports at espn. >> wait, wait, wait. worse than that. it's worse than that. the line is contextual. >> it's christmas. because it's christmas. of course we will. >> problematic for espn? >> well, for why espn would want to marginalize a holiday that the majority of americans celebrate, a national holiday where people will be at home on christmas day with their families probably watching espn. maybe not anymore but they probably would have been. >> but i want the know, this is
5:34 pm
so insane. i mean, the whole thing is. this is a catholic hospital. trying to raise money for the kids who are severely ill to give them some pleasure. so number one, the spot is noble because it helps children. number two, the words in the spot are in context of the christmas season and the fact it's a catholic hospital. so, what espn is basically saying is we do not recognize the federal holiday of christmas and do not recognize the right of a catholic hospital to say the words god's healing power. that's a gross violation of freedom of speech in my opinion, is it not? >> well, it's just another example of how a handful of people would take the spirit of christmas out of christmas season of hope, a message of hope, the meaning of christmas and cast it to the side of the street. and this is what we have got to fight against. >> but see, there's no war on christmas. you know that.
5:35 pm
you think john jon stewart would run in ad? try to run it on comedy central network. he says no war on christmas. there's a downside on this. we asked the organization that paid for the ad to come on the program and they won't and won't stand up for the belief system either and this is the problem. they're afraid, the organization, to take on espn so espn insulted them, diminished them, told them you're not worthy because you're invoking the birth of jesus on christmas and telling folks that you believe in the healing power of god and not worthy. you can't be on the network. and then this organization is too afraid to step up and say, you know? it's wrong. i have to do it. last word, counselor. >> that's why alliance defending freedom exists to help people like this who don't want to have christmas taken out of their holiday. the christmas spirit. so that we can represent them for free and exercise their first amendment rights, they can
5:36 pm
5:40 pm
i'm bill o'reilly. we begin with the doctor that designed some of the obama care law. ezekiel emanuel recently appeared on fox news sunday. >> he never said you'll have unlimited -- >> he asked a question f. you like the doctor, keep your doctor. did he not say that, sir? >> he didn't say you can have unlimited choice. >> simple yes or no question. if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. >> yes. but look. if you want to pay more for an insurance company that covers your doctor, you can do that. >> what do you say about that? >> well, first off, billy, i have apl apologize for my hair tonight. it looks like somebody set up a fracking operation as i look in the monitor. as for ezekiel emmanuel.
5:41 pm
i know his brother. he headed the agency where i was for a while. i like ari. he's funny. he's smart. he gets it. he plays rough in show business which i like but i'll tell you this. if he developed the script called the obama carolout and a writer named ezekiel emanuel showed up with the script, ari would whack him. he won't say it because it's his brother. let's take it over to zeke for a second. he's a salesman managing to make willie lohman look like -- and you could run the logjam at disney in that spittle. i know where the keystone pipeline is. at least he's preaching you in the bs getting me to swallow. when you are the architect for a hus of cards, you go down in the records with the architect who built the tacoma narrows bridge.
5:42 pm
i requested some footage. the great walter lance provided this when i first watched woody woodpecker as a kid. the's obama care right there. if it was a bridge. and i'm going to continue to call it obama care although they call it the affordable health care act now. i'm change it when the president changes his name to barack affordable. where's the disappointment? why do you scold us? there's 6 million people who have lost their health care. 365 have signed up. take a couple days and be disappointed. the website is a civ. i eliminate the middleman and sign a power of attorney over to julian assange. the last name ezekiel, i researched. three major prophets in the old testament. isaiah as in thomas who ruined the next. there's jeremiah as in wright who ruined that church in
5:43 pm
chicago and now ezekiel as in emanuel ruining obama care. >> did you memorize that? >> yes. >> it's what i do. i'm on "the o'reilly factor" for god's sake. >> i'll watch the rerun just to see that. >> thank you. there's a congresswoman in new hampshire named ann custer and had a little -- that's right. get your list. get your laughs in. jokes ready, everyone. so ann custer has a town hall meeting and here's what happened. roll the tape. >> can you address benghazi? >> no. >> what will you do about benghazi? why isn't benghazi at the top of your issue? >> well, i'm certainly not here to talk about it. we're here to talk about the middle east. >> that is the middle east. >> libya's like right in the middle of the middle east. >> benghazi is the middle east. >> so -- >> she looks as stupid as mo
5:44 pm
howard after being hit in the head. does anybody else notice that the stupidest people no longer have a dunce hat on in the room. the stupidest person now has a gavel for god's sakes. she has no idea what benghazi is. she thinks it's one of the three actors of john and peter faulk in the film "husbands." she ekdn't make it into jeff dunham's act. look at that glazed over look on her face. who better to address a town hall than the village idiot? makes patty murray look like marie curry. >> is that all? >> sorry. i'm -- >> crazy words in there or anything like that? >> no, no. same stuff i told a shrink for $400 an hour. now you pay me. >> dennis miller, everybody. we have two new bold and
5:45 pm
fresher shows to tell you about. friday, march 28th in charleston. tickets going fast for that one. next day, saturday march 29th knoxville, tennessee. tickets make great christmas gifts. did you see that on deck santa claus as the environmental group greenpeace sees him. don't miss this one upcoming.
5:48 pm
back of the book segment tonight. did you see that? the christmas controversy in tallahassee, florida. anativety scene was put up in the capitol building rotunda. of course the anti-christmas people jumped right on that. >> children sing a christmas carol beside the nativity scene at the capitol and soon mary and the baby jesus is joined by something called a festivus pole
5:49 pm
covered with beer cans put up by an atheist. >> when the state of florida allows religious symbols to be displayed in the rotunda, they opened the door and i just walked right through. >> chaz, he should be very proud. here now to explain further, is this a tradition in tallahassee? always have the crash in there? >> no. the nativity scene is just this year and just started. there was a menorrah before that and now that the nativity scene is there, chaz stooebs decides to build a 6-foot tall pabst blue ribbon pole and call it a festivus pole. it's a fake made-up holiday and people get around the pole and announce their grievances on december 23r't think they had tt that in there. it's not a legitimate holiday or religious expression. >> i agree with you. >> it's chaz the cook.
5:50 pm
>> they say that the hands are tied. >> hands on tied. >> but, you know, they're saying that, you know, they have to allow all -- >> what culture is the pabst blue ribbon? >> it isit's a made-up joke fro "seinfeld." they have no obligation. >> so the attorney general -- >> he put this next to the ridiculousness of the nativity, in his opinion. >> we all know it is insulting. there is no war on christmas according to jon stewart. the attorney general of florida -- >> pam bondi. >> just say no. you're not turning this into a circus. if a legitimate religion wants to come in, okay. not this clown. now, greenpeace and santa. >> dear children. regrettably, i bring bad tidings.
5:51 pm
melting ice here. the north pole has made our operations and our day-to-day life intolerable and impossible. there may be no alternative but to cancel christmas. >> according to greenpeace santa looks like the texas chainsaw massacre guy. >> he's dirty. looks like a hostage video. i have good news for people. that's not santa. santa is busy at the north pole. this is carson the butler tr from "downton abbey." >> what is their point? >> their point is the arctic is melting. the north pole where santa lives is in danger. they want everybody to sign the petition. 4.5 million signed already.
5:52 pm
they say if you sign it, you will be in good company with jude law and paul mccartney and madonna. they need to raise money to save the arctic. they say we already saved the antarctic. it's 137 below there. so they are taking credit for that. >> they are adding ice. so this is a money fundraiser by showing you santa that looks like a serial killer. >> yeah. >> i don't know if this is the right way to go about it. if they had a happy santa who was sad. i used to be a happy santa but i'm sad now because the north pole will collapse into the sea. >> remember the indian with the tear, that's a better way to go. this is scary. kids, santa is busy. he's not in the video. >> if anybody sees that guy slide down the chimney, take out your gun and shoot him. >> looks like carson from "downton abbey." same actor.
5:53 pm
>> that's above me. >> everybody at home knows. >> i can't understand the accents on that show. we have a billoreilly.com poll question for you. how much will you spend on gifts? mccallum, $20,000. $100 to $300, $300 to $500 or more. let us know and we'll give you the results tomorrow. the tip of the day is moments away.
