incorrect in what you -- in your talking points. for example, you said that the obama administration has not lessened sanctions against the castro regime but over the course of the first obama, there's relaxations in the policy of feeler gestures to see if the cubans would -- >> but that was about tourism mostly and other things. it wasn't economic. we still -- their products cannot be sold here and killing them. that's the main product. okay. whatever. >> depends on how you define a sanction, bill, but you also made the references to richard nixon opening china, ronald reagan pursuing gorbachev and also the iran nuclear deal and saying that it's necessary for the commander in chief to do what's in the interest of the united states national security and those three cases of china, russia and iran we're talking about major powers. there is no impetus for president obama to shake the hand of a leader of an island like cuba. >> we have an american as mccain

ryan says, you know, you have to have going forward. but then we hear thunder on the right. so what's the inside story? >> the thunder on the right and thunder on the left. part of the problem is this is a deal cut by two people, the two budget chiefs in the house and senate and now 535 other members of the congress that have like 2 days to study this and then vote on it and race out of town for the holidays. for a lot of folks it smacks of the cram the work in and deal with the consequences down the road. the details of this fall short on both sides. basically, it's a two-year deal, would alleviate some of the so-called sequester cuts and raises fees on air travel and other things. cbo says it reduces the deficit $85 billion but republicans say, wait a minute. if there's not serious spending cuts and reform, why do away with the budget act with fiscal discipline in the sequester? and then the democrats say, wait, they want the unemployment

assurance push forward and close corporate loopholes. so the left and the right on the extremes are angry about it. >> all right. i think it's going to pass. would you say i'm wrong on that? >> well, there's a little it buffalo 0bit of a mystery of mitch mcconnell. it will be close. the leaders on both sides say it's a squeaker but they think it will pass. >> i think it will and i think ryan -- i think what ryan is doing -- i i respect ryan. he's saying, this is the best deal we can get now and if we do it, our chances of winning back the senate and increasinging our margin in the house next year go way up and then when republicans regain that power, they handcuff barack obama for two years of the administration. >> there's a little bit of that. it's going to antagonize the tea party and go after incumbents

so far, nbc news has not answered the question. and there is no question. they have their hands full. msnbc commentator martin bashir forced to resign last week and causing controversy all over the place. nbc news is a long history of distinguished reporting and now employing people bringing disgrace to the operation. they should do something. directly ahead, thoughts on the story. and later, dennis mill tore talk about the architect of obama care. those reports after these messages.

al sharpton continuing to be dishonest on nbc's air. joining us from washington, host of "media buzz" howard kurts and

from miami, mr. goldberg. bernie, you're the president of nbc universal. all right? >> uh-huh. >> full power over sharpton. what do you do? >> well, i'd fire him but i wouldn't have hired him in the first place but that doesn't mean that the people that run nbc or comcast, by did way, the parent company, are going to do that. every important democratic politician running for high office has to go to harlem and kiss al sharpton's ring. okay? every one of them. they're concerned about him. they have to pay him respect. so, if powerful politicians are doing that, are we supposed to believe that phil griffin of msnbc or the people running comcast aren't equally, i'll use the word afraid of him. i think they are. because who the hell know what is he's going to say the next day after he gets fired or what he's going to do?

they're not going to take that chance, i don't think. >> if sharpton is just a commentator like bashir, you think he'd -- did he do enough to be fired, mr. kurtz? putting the pressure and color aside. did he do enough to be fired in your opinion? >> i would fire the producer to begin with, with the editing mistakes. that's attempts to deceive viewers and he was a communist and didn't let you continue the thought on tape to say he was a great man. now, al sharpton has always worn two hats on msnbc. activist, some says racial ambulance chaser. he was involved in the trayvon martin murder case and then went on msnbc and took one side. so clearly, he has treated very, very differently than most talk show hosts. >> okay. but again, if we -- if nbc is

not going to do anything, bernie, this means all standards have collapsed at that news organization, have they not? >> well, you understand that there was a former president of nbc news who said we do news here on this side of the street and they over there at msnbc are our editorial page. i say, fine. fair enough. and then i say, is that the kind of editorial page you'd want? because it shouldn't be the kind of editorial page you'd want. let me pick on -- >> let me just challenge. hard news and commentary both under the umbrella of journalism. >> right. >> both in the journalism realm. this is journalism. there are rules, there are rules. you cannot distort either the facts or the commentary. you can't do that. we have proven that sharpton does this routinely.

we just showed you two more egregious things. >> yeah. that's a good point. let me take your viewers into the factory and on a tour of how sausage is made. what howard said is absolutely correct. first of all, sharpton is responsible for what's on his show. his name is on it. it's his show. he is responsible. no question about that. >> i agree with that. >> but sharpton doesn't go into the editing room. i'm guessing he doesn't know where it is at msnbc. this is almost always done, almost always by young, liberal unethical producers who didn't grow up in a world of anything resembling traditional journalism and what they're doing is what they believe the culture at msnbc expects of them. what they're doing is what the president -- >> so that phil griffin should be fired then? because if you're right -- >> howard said that the producer

of venom against sarah palin and not punished for three weeks until he lost his job. the tone is set at the tone. the mistakes are made and that's where i would fault the management of network. >> i don't expect nbc to do anything. i'll tell you what. they're losing credibility, bernie. the last word on it. losing credibility now. i think they are. >> here's the last word. i'm wondering if you considered this possibility. that they have come up with a strategy over there and the strategy is, say really nasty, unethical things about bill o'reilly trying to set the record straight and get more publicity on fox than ever. >> it doesn't matter. you have to have 12 people watching. >> i heard that argument a million times. tough have a product. okay? they have no product. that's why their ratings are terrible. >> msnbc spends hours talking about fox. if fox news went off the air, there's a test pattern. >> they don't have a product

so insane. i mean, the whole thing is. this is a catholic hospital. trying to raise money for the kids who are severely ill to give them some pleasure. so number one, the spot is noble because it helps children. number two, the words in the spot are in context of the christmas season and the fact it's a catholic hospital. so, what espn is basically saying is we do not recognize the federal holiday of christmas and do not recognize the right of a catholic hospital to say the words god's healing power. that's a gross violation of freedom of speech in my opinion, is it not? >> well, it's just another example of how a handful of people would take the spirit of christmas out of christmas season of hope, a message of hope, the meaning of christmas and cast it to the side of the street. and this is what we have got to fight against. >> but see, there's no war on christmas. you know that.

you think john jon stewart would run in ad? try to run it on comedy central network. he says no war on christmas. there's a downside on this. we asked the organization that paid for the ad to come on the program and they won't and won't stand up for the belief system either and this is the problem. they're afraid, the organization, to take on espn so espn insulted them, diminished them, told them you're not worthy because you're invoking the birth of jesus on christmas and telling folks that you believe in the healing power of god and not worthy. you can't be on the network. and then this organization is too afraid to step up and say, you know? it's wrong. i have to do it. last word, counselor. >> that's why alliance defending freedom exists to help people like this who don't want to have christmas taken out of their holiday. the christmas spirit. so that we can represent them for free and exercise their first amendment rights, they can
