shooting in centennial, colorado. at this hour, two student victims have been hospitalized. one, a girl in serious condition, the gunman is dead s earlier, students seen pouring out with hands up. video shows them being padded down while nearby schools went on lock down. police say the shooter asked for a teacher by name the teacher learned he was being targeted he left school? n.hopes, we understand it would encourage the gunman to leave, too. this comes just one day before we mark a year since the newtown school straj di. i had a remarkable conversation with six loved ones who lost family members during that sad december day you'll hear from them later on in the show. also, is santa claus real? what does he look like?
9:02 pm
hide the kids, mom and dad. apparently we ignited controversy. the african american author of the piece was upset about the commercial depiction of santa clause as white. and argued a quote, fat, old, white man who is quote, melanin deficient made her feel ashamed as a child. and kicking off the light hearted segment i offered a mess wrnlg for any kids watching saying santa, who i joked is a real person whose race is identifiable is white. just as harris claimed in her piece but that we're debating whether that should somehow change >> so have a piece on.com. that santa clause should not be a white man anymore. i laughed and thought this is ridiculous. yet
9:03 pm
another person claiming it's racist to have a white santa. by the way, santa just is white. but this person is arguing we should have a black santa. santa is what he is. we're just debating it. wanted to get that straight. when i read the piece, the author seems to have, you know, she's african american and seems to have real pain in having grown up with this image of a white santa. she speaks about it kind of honestly saying i don't understand why that had to be. >> i realized the piece by harris went on to argue harris should be a penguin was tongue in cheek. that is in part why we covered the story. humor is a part of what we try to bring to the show. sometimes that is lost. cue the fire storm of controversy over my declaring santa's skin color. many questioning whether i understand santa is a mythical figure.
9:04 pm
others suggesting i am racist who is outraged at idea of a black santa. >> this is everybody waiting for segment. grab your pop corns. turn volume up. close the door. sit down, here we gochlt if you thought santa claus or jesus christ were anything other than white, fox news anchor megyn kelly says you're wrong. saying both are white and that is a fact. >> so get outraged is riddicul s ridiculous. you'd find a black santa claus, black angels and a black jesus. >> that is what bothered me most is the way kelly and others said it so angrily. it sunk in to me. felt like you're insisting this
9:05 pm
not real figure must be white. >> all fictional people are white. in the bible, what kids are watching fox news at home? there is weird kids. >> outraged? well this, would be funny if not so telling about our society. in particular the knee jerk instinct by many to race bait z to assume the worst in people. especially people employed by the powerful fox news channel. neither my statement nor harriss was motivated biracial fear and loathing. it was mow ti vated by lifetime of exposure to the commercial mall casting calls and movies harris references in
9:06 pm
her piece. we continuely see st. nick as a white man in modern day america. should that change? well that debate got lost because many couldn't get past the fact that i acknowledged as harris did, that the most commonly depicted image of santa does, in fact have white skin. i also did say jesus was white as i've learned that is far from settled. for me, the facts that an offhand jeft i made during a segment about whether santa should be replaced by a penguin has become a national fire storm says two things. race is still an incredibly volatile issue in this country and fox news, and yours truly are big targets for many people. but... don't take my word for it. our panel debates right after the break. >> okay. people, tomorrow morning, 8:00 a.m
9:10 pm
web site would rather fling arrows from offices happily, bishop harry jackson is here. he's a radio talk show host. zerlina thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me. i just think the, you demanded that santa be white. santa is a magical man that flies around in a flying sled. kids should be able to use their imaginations when talking about fictional characters and make him whatever they want him to be if he's white, black, it doesn't matter. i think that the insis stance he must be white because advertisers have portrayed him this way in america, i think that that was the thing that turned people off. i don't think that you know, you're a racist. i don't know what is in your heart. i don't call people racist but insistence he must be
9:11 pm
whiechlt >> how did i demand ask insist he must be white. >> well, he said he just is white. that is the case. it's not. >> i was trying to explain this in talking points we've given the spoiler alert at the top of the show. we know there is no santa. >> right. >> it's a mythical character. so only santa sant i could have been referring to is a commercial santa. and that is the very same thing okay knowledged in her piece arguing needs to chafrjt we're on the same page about the fact that the image in the country of santa is white shed she said it, and described him as melanin deficient.
9:12 pm
>> i just think that sometimes we have to take a step back, wonder why most historical figures are portrayed as white. it's very, very important for people of color. growing up i had a black santa at my house i have a black jesus the daughter of two pastors so i had a black jesus growing up. i think it's important symbols of tradition ask culture in society reflect all of us, all of our identities you know whiteness is not a default color or identity. you know? >> i think people agree on that. everybody agrees on. that the only thing i was trying to say when i, i was trying to make a joke at home for kids. we air at 6:00 p.m on the west coast. i know some viewers watch with their families and so on. so i was
9:13 pm
trying to be tongue in cheek, people know santa is real he must have a race right now. and that is where people sort of, i don't know what happened. but they misinterpreted me. and then, i think some people who like to hate on fox news and on me started to ascribe unfortunate motives. >> people are put unfortunate motives on you and me. i appear as a democrat. so hate mail i receive is ugly as well. i just think that you know we need to expand our imaginations when talking about fictional characters there is a controversy with hunger games about one character being portrayed as a black actress, she's in the book described as a black person, and people weren't able to feel the same level of sympathy for the character because she was black the root of that is problematic. >> let me ask you think. we
9:14 pm
didn't get to debate the position, we need to think about changing image of santa but that, too, brought a lot of feelings out saying look. you know? those pieces showed a black santa. some people are taking issue with her suggestion the mere color of his skin in these portrayals as whooilt is somehow alienating to black children. >> it is alienating. >> why is white skin alienate something >> i grew up in all white town the only black student until high school my mom prioritized having symbols traditional symbols in the house that looked like me. so i could grow up as a young girl be proud of who i am. that is important as you're developing your identity growing
9:15 pm
up. and so it's not about whiteness problematic for me, it's about being proud of who you are and seeing things and understanding your history and hert yivenlth i have black barbie dolls growing up. my mom wanted me to have high self esteem. >> thank you for coming on. we appreciate your point of vuchlt thank you. >> now, bishop harry jackson. bishop, your thoughts on this? >> i think this is overblown. you're dealing with is that fox has a certain image. you're being attacked i think unfairly. and it's someone who grew up whose father saw people lynched and all kinds of things of that nay tushgs i say some folks, especially younger folks like your last guest should build a bridge and get over it we are dealing with the fact that st. nick was actually a real figure. and it doesn't matter what this skin color is,
9:16 pm
the idea is that harris has is that we're going to denegrate and make him into a penguin. >> somehow that didn't get attention. change santa into a penguin. instead, what i said got attention. >> they're looking for you. i think what we're dealing with now is people would rather thauk about what you're saying in a kind of ideological kind of format instead of dealing with substance, we're not going to get across the race problem until we deal with real issues i think we can. based on mandela. model. based on mlk. i think we can overcome the race problem. in our nation, but
9:17 pm
we're not trying hard enough. that is my opinion. >> what do you make of -- we played sound bytes there. people, i think mischaracterizing the segment, describing me as outrageed and angry. if you watch it, just, i mean, does this say outrage to you? >> when i read the piece author seems to have, she's african american and seemed to have real pain in having grown up with this image of a white santa. she speaks about it honestly saying i didn't understand why that had to be. your thoughts? >> i don't think that that had anger. i think, though, if i'm hurt, if i'm bitter, if i've unresolved issues, any mention of these things causes me to rise up. i think that is part of the problem in america. is that
9:18 pm
a 400 year old problem starting with slavery never has been settled many times we talk around issues and now, problems we're having at capitol building, democrat versus republican, all have racial impolitics as well. and it should not be we're better than that. >> we hope. particularly this time of the year we can do better and try. and not to always assume the worst, then go on twitter and say meanest things we can say. >> well, i really appreciate your having this segment. the way you treated your last guest shows you do have tolerance. keep up the good work. i think you'll make a difference. we're going to change the way we deal with this issue over time. >> thank you, bishop. merry christmas to you.
9:19 pm
>> merry christmas tuchlt we're taking your thoughts on it. and we'll be right back on the big budget deal. also, millions wonder what is to become to their health care coverage. >> they just don't know what services or plans are going to be available nochlt one knows what is going to happen january 1st.
9:23 pm
>> we hear growing calls for republicans to reject it. mark casen is a is a former speech writer for president george w. bush you have an interesting take on this suggesting that the republicans on capitol hill have a case of ptsd. what do you mean? >> barack obama took office, republicans have basically been, he's run the table over republicans from stimulus to obamacare to fiscal cliff tax increase one victory republicans had was budget control act. sequester, they're giving it's up. spending supposed to go down. we're raising it by $53 billion. why? because they have ptsd. so scarred by the government shut down experience they're afraid of having another fiscal fight with the president in january.
9:24 pm
so we're going to concede one victory they've had. >> shouldn't they be, you know, having ptsd? and worried? >> look. the government shut down was a disaster. it was, the reason is that because we had no chance whatever of winning, of defunding obamacare the lesson isn't that republicans shouldn't fight, but we shouldn't fight stupid n obamacare what we're trying to do is get the democrats to undo a law, a current law, we didn't like. in the case of the budget control act we don't have to do anything. and let's continue spending cuts we're agreeing to spending
9:25 pm
increases. >> you know this is a significant amount of money. are we going to see more that have going forward? >> the tea party driven house just voted for this in a massive vote. in the senate, it's in trouble. you have mcconnell, everybody against it. there is only one senator coming out for this, it's possible this deal will fail in the senate. >> won't that be ironic? good to see you. >> thank you. >> coming up, charles krauthammer with his take on what went wrong with obamacare. plus, a follow up on real
9:26 pm
9:29 pm
9:30 pm
no evidence anybody is going to able to keep their doctor. nobody knows rules we don't know rules as providers. come january 1st it's going to be hard with the promises and the things has is doing. >> you talk about how access is gooding to become the problem. what do you mean by that? >> it isn't enough to give someone a card. what we want to try to do is lower costs and increase access. problem we're seeing already as everybody knows is that simply put, people don't know if they're covered well on provider side wesh don't know if the card people are coming in with is valid so what is that is going to do is restrict access. it's looking
9:31 pm
like very few physicians are going to stay on networks. so people are not going to be aware what doctors they can see. people with complicated problems may only have some covered. that doesn't get to higher deductibles. >> explain how that is a factor. if i've got the got a higher deductible, how is that going to affect care? >> people make choices when going to the doctor, one promise is that we'd see lower costs. with this health care law, we'd able to keep the plan and keep our doctors we're seeing majority of people looking like they're getting higher rates. and that may not
9:32 pm
be an issue. if the k.pay goods up what is not more money f medications aren't covered or no services, it's going to mean less care for many of the people that we needed to try to help. >> you talked about, responding to a congressman suggesting i'm not going to get between you, doctor and pash scombrents how you do a surgery. so this claim that the government is going get in between is bogus he was saying. >> simply put, issue is that this congressman said i won't tell you how to do your surgery, don't tell us how to do policy. i made the case good doctors and good providers and nurses are not going to be able to dot job of getting people taken care of.
9:33 pm
we've seen it wasn't well thought out result now is that maybe it doesn't say how, but beginning to tell us who can get the surgery and when. that is very disappointing for what we wanted to achieve with meaningful reform to keep decisions between patients, family, and their doctors and a a.way from politicians. >> so that is a fact of medicine. >> new tonight, a poll, a cfos finds almost half say they may cut employees the reason? added costs of the health care overhaul. charles krauthammer is a fox news contractor and author of the number one new york times bestseller "things that matter" last five weeks
9:34 pm
charles good to see you. you know, we've been talking about this is that let's say all of health care.gov got fixed. and running swimmingly. everybody getting signed up who thought they were signed up. and go to january, when going for care, when they go for care, more and more they're just not going to get it. not the way they used to. >> a lot of them aren't going to at all f they get it, insurers ill zil to pay without having idea whether this person is insured we have a system that is in unchartered waters. the be reason we're here is because of the deception that under lay all of obamacare. it wasn't just the promise if you had a plan, you can keep the plan. or doctor, you can keep the doctor. the impression and
9:35 pm
had it, liked it. he was saying i've got a plan it's going to leave all of you unaffected. americans are generous they, a lot said, okay. try to do that. we're learning that not only was it known, but intended it would demolish the way american medicine was run until now. people would be driven out of plans. next year, tens of millions going to lose employer plans if you want to keep a doctor, you can. if you want to have a catastrophic plan, which for a lot of young healthies will make
9:36 pm
sense. if a pus hits you, you can't purchase that. deciding if you're a 26-year-old guy, you've got to have lactation services which you don't need. so this is to redo, nationalize health care system to keep it under control. that is why we're getting this shocking realization everybody changed starting january 1st >> what doul think president played here? because you know, he some believe he wanted single payer. and there are other theorys beyond that. what do you think? >> conspiracy theory he intended going to have to end up with a
9:37 pm
system i think gives them too much credit. real answer is that he what knew. he knew you can't get americans to accept a canadian type system. he was ready to settle for second best. which is washington control of health care. who as we see are not independent at all. ordering to reimburse patients starting january 1st. so what we're doing, what he's done is create a system that controlled by feds through agency ever that is the

9:44 pm
death. her bravery. >> i know you in particular talked about how important you felt it was to try to find forgiveness in your heart. and that you much rather be lauren's dad than the father of the killer. did you find that forgiveness? have you gotten there? >> i found it the day after. >> how? >> i tl was no other way. that i didn't want to live in pain. and i mean, live in pain n hachlt i didn't want to hate. >> has anyone else determined to do that successfully or unsuccessfully? >> i haven't gotten there yet. i just picked up the mantle and try to be positive with my daughters and joining in with sandy hook promise and a fund for my wife. just carrying things forward i haven't, i wasted wasted time on that. >> your wife was the school
9:45 pm
psychologist. she ran towards the danger. >> yes. that is in keeping with her character. >> when you think about her and try to function in this world are you able to focus on here and now to find happiness? i know if you focus on the loss it's hard to feel happiness. >> the three of us try to take positives and we try to move ahead. and try to bring something positive out of this. if that is possible, it's in keeping with what mary would have wanted us to do instead of sitting around, and doing something else. >> let's talk about that. about focusing on what can be done? parents around the world looked and said how can i prevent it in my school? my community? it's part of what you're trying too now educating communities about how to prevent this. how?
9:46 pm
>> i think if we is that right conversation at the community level, with our initiative parent together from sandy hook promise that is how the conversation will change. once people are engage that had is going to work up. and legislation will follow. >> what does it mean to get the community work something >> just driving awareness. getting involved with programs there are many. i don't know if we are v.time to talk bit. >> if you look up to day asks weeks and months leading up to sandy hooshgs what could have been done differently? >> we have a personal nexus in our family, our son daniel was the kid that would sit with someone sitting alone and adam lanza sat is a lone.
9:47 pm
>> that is one of the stories we've learned about his isolation. my own prefr jens not to say his name i have determined not to say the name of killers on our show, i think a lot of them that, is what they want. but he, you know we've learned about his isolation and his mother's participation, or, willingness to turn a blind eye to that isolation. without, you know throwing the blame on her, what do you think his family is, his immediate family could have done differently? any of you? >> i don't -- >> sorry. >> in the particularly for his family, but in general, in terms of things we need to look at. the idea of mental wellness and ensuring we're intervening at an early age if possible and identifying our children minds are developing in a healthy way. and same way we work to develop a healthy body. mental wellness is critical. agun safety. and
9:48 pm
good community connectedness and parenting. these are critical skills required aconsiders the nation. it's what we're doing with parent together. and sandy hook promises saying join us in this, we'll help with tools and programs helping prevent not only the next sandy hook but hundreds and thousands of other gun violence incidents that happen in this country every year. >> and this is not an antigun group. >> no. no. >> not at all. it's not against gun ownership and gun rights. this is about just finding ways to prevent this, let me ask you about it, neil. you're a gun enthuse yichlt >> i grew up hunting and shooting. i started skeet shoot agent eight years old. a year and a half older than jesse, in fact. but, you know, i look back and things were different when i was growing up. you know?
9:49 pm
i guess we were taught to be more responsible. parenting was more awareness. we didn't have the video games, either. and everybody growing up were outside. and i don't remember any children isolated or, so often you see these problem cases like this. with adam lanza. you know, after the report came out that gave you a good picture of what his life was. you know, how he spent hours alone. and you know, i hold his mother indirectly responsible for what happened. clearly had access to the guns. there was no forced enry into the safe. it was poor judgment a poor choice on her behalf to,
9:50 pm
and that. >> let me ask you this. >> providing access. >> this is something i wondered about. do you think the killer in this case was evil or mentally disturbed? >> i don't focus on it. i think what bill says, you have to focus on positive and moving ahead and trying to make something good out of it. we all lost, you know, the most important person in our lives. we lost the most and we need to make sure this doesn't happen agai again. >> i think it's a testament to all of you and to the love you had for your family members that you're standing here, you're
