1:30 pm
learning to be a more healthy you. hi everybody. i'm jamie colby. >> i'm eric shawn. welcome to our show. joining us is marc siegel associate professor of medicine, also the author of inner pulse, unlocking the secret code of safety and health. >> and dr. david samadi from lenox hill hospital. we're ready to learn. start with something that's really important. this has to do with a new warning about a disease that many of us rarely worry about and that's measles. measles have been practically
1:31 pm
eradicated. but now they say new pockets are creating concern. dr. segal, measles are back. why? >> first of all, measles is a virus. the thing we have to know is it's a wildly contagious virus. we talk about flu on the show. if someone in your house has the flu, there's a one in four chance you get it. if someone in your house has measles, there's a 90% chance you'll get it. what does it look like? you start with runny nose, high fever, red eyes is very characteristic and a few days later you get this red rash on the upper part of the body and it spreads. the centers for disease control says measles is a perfect example of how a health problem anywhere is a health problem everywhere. the reason that is the case is because we need vaccination. one of the biggest heroes of the 20th and 21st century is the mmr vaccine whiff has 84% compliance around the world and is stamping
1:32 pm
out meeszales around the world. there's still 150,000 deaths around the world every year. it's starting to return here because of imported cases. we travel someone, someone that's not vaccinated, brings it back and spreads it to their community. there's a 30% complication rate including encephalitis, hospitalizatio hospitalizations, ear infections, pneumonia. it's a very serious disease. >> there's this whole controversy over mmr, dr. samadi. some people not getting the vaccinations. we talked about that a lot. >> that's exactly the reason we have this problem. pockets in texas because of religious reasons, in brooklyn there was a family, 50 people got this partly because of that exactly false information out there. we should just debunk this and put to it rest. this vaccine is safe. it does not cause autism. this comes from 1998 when andrew wakefield published a paper that said maybe this will cause
1:33 pm
autism. since then that paper is withdrawn. there's no proof this causes autism. everyone needs to go and get this vaccine. this vaccine usually is given between 12 and 18 months. it's fairly safe. the second boost is about five years old. as marc mentioned, it's extremely contagious. how do you know your child has it? four days of fever followed by three days of c, cough, common cold symptoms, congress jungt itis. and then a rash through the whole body. in the mouth you'll see white patchy lesions. that's the typical part of measles. there's no treatment. you can get the blood test, find out if your antibodies are high and you have to keep the kids away from others. >> there's no treatment? >> no real treatment once you have it. a lot of times it recovers on its own. it can also lead to pneumonia, encephalitis. one out of a thousand people
1:34 pm
die. let me just mention one other thing. since 1963, samuel katz discovered this vaccine, we went from 500 people dieing every year to practically zero. this is a safe vaccine and people should get it. >> that's in the united states people is talking about. united states compliance rate is over 90%. >> 10% aren't getting the shots. >> eric, the magic number is 90%. when you more than 90% you can create the herd immunity. here is the other thing people need to know, the measles vaccination, david was talking about giving it to young children, one shot gives you a 95% shot against measles and mumps. >> if you're a teacher and exposed to kids, in health care, maybe get the boost after the age of 20, 25.
1:35 pm
you have to check your titres. >> you know every parent asks themselves the question do i want to do this or not. are there any circumstances where it might not be safe? for example, if your child is immune suppressed. >> dr. colby, that's a great point. i'm sorry to cut you off. that is exactly right. it's a live virus vaccine. it should not be given to immunocompromised individuals unless you first check with your physician. >> the second part of my question, thank you so much, dr. siegel, is whether or not you take your child to the pediatrician and they say she needs three, mmr, xyz and at the time at the time necessary. >> it's not what's recommended, but have that conversation with your pediatrician. >> the whole whole controversy about vaccine causing autism.
1:36 pm
we need to put this to rest on this show. there's no scientific date that shows measles and mmr causes it, period. if you look at the data, it's not there. >> we got two opinions. i hope that's helpful to everybody out there. i'm glad we did the topic. thank you. there may also be big changes coming to your dinner table. how about this? the food and drug administration want to phase out antibiotics used to process meet. dr. samadi, there are different sant buy otics used. is organic not used? >> organic is the one we would recommend at the end of the segment. the history of this is fda since 1977 hasn't done much about the food industry, special meat, agriculture. the farmers have been giving these kind of antibiotics, first to treat the bugs and bacteria in cows and chicken and others. now they found out these antibiotics make the cows grow faster and bigger.
1:37 pm
financially this was a great way to make money. over the years, these antibiotics has come in our food chain. that's one of the reasons why i'm completely against using all this antibiotics in our meat and et cetera because of the rise of antibiotic resistance. >> what's the danger? >> the danger is over 2 million americans the antibodies aren't working anymore because we're getting resistant. last year about 23,000 people died as a result of this resistance. i think urologists, get a similar urinary tract in the patient. used to completely knock it out, the culture panel, all is resistant. >> from the food? >> from the food and antibiotics over use. 80% is used not on people, but on animals. it's getting into our system indirectly. you need to know about this. as a result we have staff aur yus that's extremely resistant.
1:38 pm
we need to be aware of this. so go -- first of all, stay away from red meat. we recommended this last week. as much as you k stay away. if you can, use organic. >> i'll go organic, but i'm not giving up meat. >> the key number that david just highlighted is that 80% of the antibiotics are given to animals, not in therapeutic ways. animals are not sick. what the fda wants to do is ban this kind of use and at least put on the label for human consumption only. they give very low doses of antibiotics that promote growth in animals. here is how it works inside an animal's intestine. if a bacteria is exposed to all the antibiotics, do you know which ones survive? the ones that survive are the ones resistant to that antibiotic. you see it with e. coli and salmonella, sheg gel la.
1:39 pm
the american academy of pediatrics came out and said we don't have enough antibiotics to treat children already because they don't tolerate this antibiotic, that antibiotic. we need more choices, not less. if you give us a problem with drug resistance, we're not going to have as much arrows in our quiver to use. that's the problem when you get over to the human side. it's a big part of the problem. the other part which david and i discussed a few weeks ago is in hospitals we're overusing antibiotics. >> back to the animals, will the fda win on this one? >> you know, in europe -- i'll answer it indirectly. in europe it's banned. all over the world it's banned. we're one of the stragglers. the biggest problem is we have too many agencies handling this. the usda handles the research in animals, cdc handles education. >> bottom line, we go to the supermarket and pay the extra money for organic? >> yes. they are banning penicillin and tetracycline. you need to have a prescription
1:40 pm
before you give these antibiotics. we have a long way to go, but it's a great start. >> very interesting. thank you. >> a few bucks more, you can look at it, but worth it. coming up, our doctors will tell us how some other minor changes in your diet can help with a painful condition that affects millions of americans. sunday housecall on your health when we come back.
1:43 pm
back now to "sunday housecall." there are painful sores that can october dmur tlining of your stomach. you may be able to get relief from gastric ulcers by making a few changes in your diet. dr. siegel, what's the difference between a gastric ulcer and something else? how do i prevent it? >> peptic ulcer disease, it
1:44 pm
affects the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine called the duodenum. most are the second part, the small intestine. today we're talking about the stop mack. the thing that worries me are people on non-steroidals, advil, aleve, aspirin, motrin, they can irritate the stomach lining. when you get an ulcer in the stomach lining, that's the problem. alcohol can lead to this problem. coffee, our favorite, big coffee fans, but it can lead to this problem. smoking is a big cause of it. if you have the problem, what do you do about snit you get treatment, you get medications, watch out for blood in your stool. dark tarry stools. you want to avoid dairy products. we'll talk more about this. you avoid spices, chocolate. >> you're taking all the fun out of everything. it can be pretty painful. how do you know when you've got one? >> let me ask you another question. how do you know you have gastric
1:45 pm
ulcer? stress, spicy food or type a personality? >> all three. >> neither one. that's a myth. 80% to 90% is bacterial infection with h pie lori. you have bacteria sitting there, you can get it from water, food, kigs, stays in your stomach. all of a sudden it can cause inflammation. on top of it, if you're stressed out, grou have dairy food, coffee, alcohol, that can increase acid in the stomach. now you have an open sore with acid hitting it. >> that stuff is only bad once you have the ulcer? >> you got it. as this goes on, it can lead to bleeding ulcer where you have somebody will have a tarry dark black stool as opposed to fresh blood which is mostly hemorrhoids because it goes through the whole system, it can cause nausea, vomiting,
1:47 pm
hpylori. in addition to the pump inhibitor, we talked about antibiotics. antibiotics plus a proton pump inhibitor plus drinking a lot of water, staying away from cigarettes, alcohol, coffee, will help your ulcer to heal. >> before you take the anti buy om ot tick, there's something called urea breath test. it can check to see if the breath test is there. you can get a blood test. then you go on tetracycline and treat sglit that's worth checking, and the drink? >> the drink is a great idea to prevent it in the first place, good bacteria. >> there's a test for that. >> and the endoscopy. >> we'll tell you about revolutionary robotic technology. i could be the next big breakthrough to fight everything from infertility to a lot of other common diseases. we'll tell you what scientists are working on. you'll hear it here first.
1:51 pm
cutting edge treat against federal tell that can prevent common diseases. what is it, doctor? >> it is coming from germany. they are using the sperm that is trapped in a tube. they are taking a robot i use which is a big robot. now we are talking about a small nano technology that trapped the sperm and directs it where they want. they has potential for fertility
1:52 pm
treatment and helping with chemotherapy. there is a tremendous future. it is a nice start-up scientific date. >> where does sperm want to go? >> it uses its tail and they employing the tail to do the electrical work and then a magnetic field to direct the sperm. millions of sperm start off, millions start off, and only one lucky one makes it. they go in the wrong direction, the wrong tube, they only last for two days, it is like they are swimming from los angeles to hawaii people have said and very few can make it. >> you put one in a nice lamborghini and they can control it. >> this will help more women getting pregnant? >> absolutely. maybe we can do appropriate diseases for other diseases, as well,. >> if this pans out we can use the nano technology to deliver
1:53 pm
the chemotherapy, et cetera, and sperm are stupid, men are stupid, they need guidance. >> i am not sure about that. >> but to deliver drugs for cancer treatment through the technology to the source could help protect healthy cells too? >> exactly. >> is it available now? >> that is part of the experiment. we will see if it pans out but nana technology is very excited. >> bad with names? don't remember where you put your car keys? leave your coffee in the other room? coming up, should i worry? the doctors will talk about memory lapses.
1:57 pm
now "should i worry," where we talk about what worries us. >> i forget people's names and where i put my keys. the senior moments are growing. >> people are worried about a disease. we have an epidemic and we expect five million sufferers by 2050 but that may not be what it is. it could be stress. anxiety. depression. modern technology. there is a recent study that says there are more senior moments in people 18 to 34 than people in their 50's and older. why? because you are busy with your smartphone, not listening, taking a photograph with your smartphone rather than actually watching what you are photographing. you do not have to know anyone's name, it is in your connection file, your file of who you...i am forgetting that word. >> everything is moving so quickly does it affect your neurons? >> talk about neurons, you
1:58 pm
brought it up. the brain is a computer. all of the nerves are talking but when they are interrupted one file does not talk to the other file. the phone rings when you walk into the kitchen and you tore get why you were in the kitchen. in is from exhaustion and lifestyle of being fatigued. the when you do your physical, look for anyone on antidepress acts. if you are a pick smoring, you do not get enough oxygen, alcohol gives you low vitamin b1, and low invite might be b-12 gives you the symptoms of alzheimer's disease. vitamin b is extremely important. i will tell you, there will be an ipad psychosis.
1:59 pm
just wait. they are not having to apply that are brain. google has become an external brain drive focus so you do not need to rely on your names, remembering things or doing the normal memory reciting. >> a trick is to talk to people and do real brain exercises. i emphasize a point made, go to your physician when this were has because it could be a b-12 deficiency or thyroid problem. first rule that out. make sure it is not anxiety or depression. then, maybe it is modern technology and you can retrain yourself to actually talk to people. >> social interaction, interacting with other people and using the crossword puzzles, play a violin, all of that exercises your brain is great. >> you really used your brains
2:00 pm
this week bringing up a let of information. >> have a great day, everyone. the american media bothered by the side show. >> president obama joining the british and danish prime ministers in a selfie. >> how does this turn into such a circus? what about the pundits on the left and the trying to score partisan points? many news outlets staying away from newtown during the one-year anniversary of the horrifying shooting there. is that
