two american astronauts stepping out in a rare christmas eve space walk to wrap up repairs. this following a better than expected repair day on saturday. repairs are getting extra attention after the movie "gravity showed how dangerous it is. >> the emergency landing of a southwest flight. >> i just heard a big boom like crashing into a wall. >> the plane shook a little bit then we smelled a lot of smoke. >> airline officials say the birds were tustuck in the plane right engine moments after takeoff. it made an emergency landing at lambert airport. more than 100 holiday travelers waited for a new crew to arrive. passengers were able to board another plane and they arrived safely in kansas city. >> target is facing a dozen lawsuits over the massive

security breech. this as the justice department stepped in to investigate. security experts say it is the largest theft of card accounts in u.s. history. the credit and debit card numbers of 30 million americans may have been stolen. the united states is sending marines into south sudan following an increase of violence there. steady violence is causing fears of an all night several war in the country. help evacuate more u.s. citizens if needed. it comes after four u.s. troops were needed after gun fire. 1,000 people have been killed since the violence broke out. >> one day extension giving americans one night to enroll being covered january 1st. james is live with us. how is it? >> it's dark so far.

for an update. >> we have lirngs showeris acros eastern carolina. a much wider storm system. take a look at the radar picture across most of the lower 48. a little bit of snowfall coming down in parts of the great lakes area and northern rockies. nothing too unusual. the big problem with this storm system are the very cold temperatures behind it. take a look at some of these current windchill temperatures across parts of the midwest. in chicago it feels like 20 below zero, feels like 23 below zero in minneapolis. in far go even colder 31 degrees below zero. you are looking at dangerous conditions. i am concerned about the communities that do not have power and are experiencing cold conditions. the actual high temperature, patty ann and elizabeth only in the teens from minneapolis to chicago. in new york city you will see a high in the 40's, low 40's but it will get colder tomorrow the

any one doing traveling coming up today and even tomorrow. the rough weather is starting to exit the east coast. this is responsible for tornadoes power outages with ice and tornado areas record setting high temperatures. lingering showers across eastern north carolina behind it across the lower 48 lingering snow showers across the great lakes and into the northern rockies. the big story behind the storm is how cold it is out there. these are some of the current windchill temperatures what it feels like as you head out the door. 23 degrees below zero. feels like 18 below zero in chicago. as you head out the door you will be doing shopping through out the day today you need to bundle up. texas feels like 19 degrees right now feels like 30 over in the city of denver. a lot of people don't want to see snow flying around in their areas but of course for christmas day you want to see that white christmas.

millions of americans heading home or away for the holidays. from the skies to the roads and the rails it's a great holiday get away. robert moses joins us live from penn station. is the crowd there yet? >> patti ann, not just yet. but we are expecting big crowds later on today. i say that because many of the mass transit agencies here in new york city have added extra service. if you have to be in the city there are extra trains to get you where you are going to get a jump start on your holiday. the vast majority of americans will be traveling by car. some will be traveling by air. about 5 and a half million according to aaa. that's just a small decline compared to last year. one thing to keep in mind according to the tsa, if you are traveling with wrapped gifts many people do be prepared security officers may check you at the stop point to examine the
