last night it was crazy in this mid up to area. absolutely beautiful. and of course it's the morning after christmas and all the gifts are unwrapped. at least the ones that arrived. many families are waking up this morning still waiting and finding that the deliveries are a little bit too late. >> yeah, ktvu takes a look at the what is behind the delays and why both u.p.s. and fedex are apologizing this morning. >> reporter: it takes thousands of workers at delivery companies to sort, load and deliver gifts to arrive before christmas. this year, some of those gifts didn't meet their deadlines. >> 99% of the things arrived in two days. but there is one item for myself that didn't arrive yet. >> reporter: u.p.s. representatives admit some of the more than 7.5 million shipments did not reach their destinations in time for the holiday. the company won't say how many packages are late, but in a statement explained, quote, the volume of air packages in our system exceeded the capacity of our network as demand was much

greater than forecasts resulting in some shipments being delayed. a spokesman for fedex says they also experienced delivery delays. both say the demand was greater than expected, and an increase in online shopping may be driving that trend. on line sales were up 9% compared to a year ago. retail sales at brick and mortar stores were up only 2%. the delivery won't keep this man from shopping again even if he has to wait a little longer for his gifts. >> i know i will get it eventually. not the end of the world. >> for people who ordered through amazon.com, the company is sending out e-mails and crediting $20 back to their the accounts to apologize for the delay. u.p.s. says the majority of packages will be delivered today.

related. but basically the biggest reason is according to the ups they were simply overwhelmed the delivery system was overwhelmed last year's sur against rose almost 40 percents from last year. companies like amazon, coals, wal-mart missed christmas eve delivery a deadline. here is some of the good news amazon will refund any of the shipping charges and give a $20 gift card. wal-mart will be giving back a $25 gift card. we have seen a lot of trucks going in and out of here. most people should be getting deliveries today or tomorrow. it is unclear exactly how widespread this delay is. that's the latest along the west side of manhattan in new york city. back to you patti ann. >> lydia, thank you. a quarter of, the time now.
