said "the new york times" was laying the groundwork so that hillary clinton who was secretary of state could run for president. they're trying to take the pressure off her and the administration, he said yesterday. well, that got "the new york times" panties all twisted. >> right. so we're hearing from the editorial page author, andrew rosenthal. "for anyone wondering why it is so important to republicans that al qaeda orchestrated the attack or how the obama administration described the attack in its immediate aftermath, the answer is simple. the republicans hope to tarnish democratic candidates by making it seem as though mr. obama doesn't take al qaeda seriously. they also want to throw mud at former secretary of state hillary clinton who they fear will run for president in 2016." he also goes on to say that he hasn't figured out who they're going to be endorsing in 2016 and calls it hilarious that these accusations are evenng made. >> mr. rosenthal's column

has to be one of the most crazy, hysterical pieces i have ever seen in print or the internet anywhere. he goes to great lengths to deny that there's any political connection to the story, but then as you just saw, goes on to attack republicans for some reason instead of defending the integrity of the story, which has come under attack by congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle, republicans and democrats. let's hear and watch what representative gowdy, republican of south carolina, had to say about the "new york times" and their reporting and how he deskrubgts -- deconstructs. >> i want to congratulate "the new york times." it only took 15 months to figure out how to spell benghazi. the video was translated into arabic in early september of twert.

early september of 2012 is when that video was translated into arabic. what explains the violence in benghazi prior to the video being translated and released. with respect to al qaeda, whether it was al qaeda or subsidiary or holding company or limited partnership, to quote hillary clinton, what difference does it make? who cares whether it was al qaeda proper or a subsidiary? four americans are dead and it wasn't a spontaneous reaction to a video. it was planned. >> and that's what a number of people have said. and so it is very -- you know, it's "alice in wonderland" land. it's getting curiouser and curiouser. >> he made the argument there was an assassination attempt on a british ambassador, attacks on other facilities prior to any video. >> the idea that this video is what sparked it doesn't seem to make any sense. we heard from jason

chaffitz on our prime time show last night. he said he spent a long time there, 21 days after the attack and said nobody was talking about it. it was a nonevent. we had another guest on the show yesterday who mentioned some social media monitoring services who were checking out what was going on in the benghazi area and nothing was even spoken about on-line really until the day after the attack, not leading up to it. so it doesn't seem that could have been what sparked it and fueled it. >> the other thing is, what's curious about it is the report on the weekend actually contradicts what the "new york times" reported in 2012 where they said an egypt-based group, the al jamal group had people on the ground that night and they got links to the core al qaeda. it's a little cooky. so it is extraordinary for the editorial guy from "the new york times" to take to his blog to let republicans have it. we're not doing anything for hillary. he said there was no

disease and stroke, these are silent killers and you want to know what your blood pressure is. our biggest problem in this country is the high consumption of salt. we're consuming about 3500 milligrams of salt. we should be around 2500 milligrams. if you're a diabetic, have kidney disease you want to go to 1500. check your blood pressure around the age of 20 every year. cholesterol is important because that is another risk for heart disease and coronary artery disease et cetera. your cholesterol level should be less than 200. start checking it at the age of 20 because we have a lot of juveniles and adults having these problems. your good cholesterol, h.d.l. should be over 50 and your bad, l.d.l. should be less than important. those screening are important. >> your doctor might say lay off this stuff or take a pill which is always handy. this is good advice, some

things you don't probably need. for instance, a stress test. you don't need that unless there is a history of heart disease. >> absolutely. a lot of people are getting stress tests but it is not necessary. if there is something on your e.k.g., if you have a family history of heart disease i think a doctor should be in communication and get that stress test. but to walk in and say get this stress test because i may have a heart attack that is not indicated or overdoing it. i think some of the thing we talked about, getting your thyroid tests, getting your p.s.a. for men, a mammogram for women, those are necessary. but to get stress tests or c.a.t. scans or m.r.i.'s for back pains are not necessary. the more is not merrier. we're overdoing them. >> i know one of my kids got hit in the head pretty hard, went to the hospital, they said you've got to have a c.a.t. scan. you say with a kid that is not necessarily needed? >> a lot of this is defensive medicine. if they don't get a c.a.t.

bartlet. jeff, good morning. there are some things we all believe or at least i believe, and in reading what you have to say, it kind of made my day to say i'm making mistakes. let's look at the first one. engine oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. everyone tells me that. they say i'm a car expert. change it every 3,000 miles or your car will die. true or false? >> that one's false. like many myths, this is more in the industry's favor than the consumers. with modern cars, many can go as far as 10,000 miles in between oil changes. the key is to look in your owner's manual. do what is appropriate for not only your car but the way you drive it. >> if you're driving in the city, stop and go traffic, does that make a difference? >> it does. that is described as severe driving which as we know in new york city can be pretty severe. >> next one, inflate tires to the pressure shown on the tire's sidewall. true or false?

>> false. that's one i hear about a lot. if you look at the side of a tire there are all kinds of numbers there that give you specifications. >> serial numbers, names, size. >> tread wear. this is information about the tire, not the tire on the car. that information, you want to look at a sticker located in the driver's doorjamb. that will tell you what's appropriate for that tire on that car. >> you go out in the 20-degree weather and open the door and look at the door itself? >> right. >> it will tell you exactly what it should be. >> maybe take an iphone picture of it so you have it. not a bad idea? >> not bad. >> if regular grade fuel is good, premium, of course, must be better. sounds like it makes sense. does that make sense? >> intuitively premium sound great but the reality is the vast majority of cars, regular is just fine. the key for this information is look inside the fuel filler door. it will say one of three things. it will say regular, in which case is the answer.

thanks. who could forget sarah murnaghan, the 11-year-old girl in desperate need of a double lung transplant, who helped overturn a national policy discriminating against children? here is her mother janet back in may. >> they can't measure how sick a child is. you know what? come to my hospital room and you will see how sick sarah is. she is dying. she is dying. >> on this new year's eve, sarah's family is seeing a very different -- singing a very different tune. sarah received her lungs back in june and in august, she returned home, august 27th. i was there and we're here now as sarah gets ready for 2014. joining us now is sarah murnaghan with her parents, janet and fran. merry christmas and happy new year, murnaghan family. >> merry christmas.

>> merry christmas. >> merry christmas. i'm so happy to see you, sarah. i know that you've overcome so much with these operations and i know how hard, 'cause i saw it up close and personal, how much your parents love you and how hard they fought for you. janet, what are you feeling today now that you have one of your beautiful children back at home with you from the children's hospital of philadelphia? >> i mean, it's such a relief to be here as a family again and to be able to celebrate the holidays as a family. just being all together such a gift. >> what do you say about that, sarah? >> being all together and to play with them again. >> absolutely. >> and do stuff with them. >> absolutely. >> we've been playing in the snow and having a good time.

>> janet, tell us about the therapy sarah is going through. she's had these two operations and she was very, very sick obviously. now she's also suffered some problems with fractures in her back and in her feet. but in spite of that, she's up on her feet. she's walking and you're weaning her off the respirator many hours a day. tell us about the therapy. >> yeah. she is doing amazingly well. when you come so close to dying, there are definitely -- your body has repercussions. her lungs are doing fantastic. our biggest challenge has been really the muscles. so we're getting her muscles strengthened. she goes to physical therapy five days a week. and some broken bones. she had fractures in her feet, which have healed and now her spinal column is entirely fractured with compression fractures. so it causes her a lot of pain, but despite that, sarah is our little warrior and she gets up

and she does it and she doesn't quit and she's getting stronger every day and she is my mirror row and my -- hero and inspiration. >> she's a hero for a lot of americans. as a father, fran, you became a hero of mine, although i don't think i ever expressed that to you. i saw you in the hospital room and i saw the concern and the anxiety, but the intense devotion and love. at first i really wanted to cry. but then i said no, this is an example of great strength. if he's not crying about the daughter that he's saving, i won't either. you've inspired so many people. what kept you so strong for so long in this fight to save your beautiful daughter? >> a lot of it was actually sarah. 'cause sarah never wanted to quit. and she gave us the strength and together as a family, it's very important to have a support structure and a family. we bonded together and we knew we needed to get something done.

so we just really worked towards that goal. >> you really did. let me ask you this question if i can, sarah, what is your dream for 2014? what do you dream about for you and your family in the coming year? >> well, i'm going to get a new pet. a teacup piggy. >> you want a teacup piglet in the house? >> uh-huh. >> and what do your parents say about that? >> they said yes. >> they said yes? okay. i heard them promise that. and i know they'll do that. i remember when you were very sick, we had that conversation and i heard your parents say yes. so i'm witness to that testament of love on that day.

sandwich? >> have you ever opened a bottle of champagne when you cooked a grilled cheese sandwich? >> i don't remember. >> the beautiful thing about this is there is three different kinds of cheeses in here. so we picked a vintage champagne. only every couple years, every decade or so do they make a vintage champagne. all the grapes are from the same harvest. they age it, there is an extra age to it. it's a real rich, toasty example of champagne. something rich like the cheese, this is fantastic. >> if you had a really good year or really bad year, go with the more expensive stuff. >> either way. >> let's talk about a dessert. what would you put with, for instance, red velvet cupcakes or your key lime pie? >> the one we're having with the key lime pie works well with any citrus dessert really. this is really unique. it's their demi sec. it's semi dry. john likes to call this the goldilocks one.

he's joined by jill from exogen, the company whose technology helped save his life. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> congratulations to you, edward, on overcoming all of this. but tell us, take us back to that day in 2009 when you're on a routine patrol and you get ambushed. >> yeah. we were out in afghanistan. myself and all my marines and i was attached to av's at the time. we came under fire about 30 to 45 minutes inside the routine foot patrol. then we were in the fire fight for a good 30, 45 minutes before i was actually hit by a route to my left leg. >> you couldn't even see your injury, though. what ensued after that? >> i had actually have my -- marine of mine who took care of me, he pulled me back to a safer
