folks. >> an attempt at the world's largest fireworks display right about you. >> i'm jon scott in for shepard smith. we're just secondle april from what could be the world's largest fireworks display ever in debut. it just struck midnight and here we go. organizers are setting off 500,000 fireworks within just six minutes. guinness world record officials are on hand for the event. and if all goes as planned, it will be more than six times larger than the current world record. that's the tallest building in the world there. you can see kicking things off. let's watch the world's largest fireworks display.

♪ [cheers and applause] [cheers and applause] >> you can hear the roar of the crowd in dubai. 500,000 fireworks, six times larger than the previous world record holder. the folks from guinness book of world records are there. they're supposed to certify this thing. but it is certainly the biggest i have ever seen. hard to believe they won't get that record.

>> lea has more. what else do we know? >> that current world record, just to put it in perspective, the world record was set in kuwait city last year. now, they set off just eve 77,000 fireworks in an hour. this was 500,000 fireworks in just six minutes. the display in kuwait city sanded three miles of coastline, this one spanned 30 miles of coastline. a u.s. company has been producing this show, and there were several really unique effects they'd been creating during it. for example, they were going to create a burst of fireworks that would imitate a sunrise, the first sunrise of 2014, and united arab emirates flag made out of fireworks.

before the display happened, there was a flying falcon that the company producing this was going to create out of fireworks to fly around the island as the countdown was happening. so, jon, in just a few hours we'll know whether or not they actually broke the world record. as you mentioned there's a representative from guinness that is there to do an odd it and figure out how many fireworks went off. >> hard to believe they won't make the world's record there. the folks in the streets sure liked it. what else are people around the world doing to ring in 2014? >> there's a lot of celebrations around the world, and for some countries they're not even -- some cities and countries they're not waiting until midnight. just for example, in sid sydney, strawing, their celebration started at 9:00 local time, family celebration. they had an incredible display of fireworks that were launched from the sydney harbor judge the sydney opera house, and other places around the world were less dramatic. looking at the video from tokyo, they literally rang in the new

year. five priests were at a temple using ropes to swing a wooden pole against a large bell. and for many people, nothing in the world compares to our celebration here in new york city. about a million people are expected to pack into times square, and also we speak, folks are making their way in to watch the ball drop. security is a huge concern. people aren't allowed to bring in bags or backpacks, and the new york police department has assigned thousands of extra patrols to keep an eye out for any signs of trouble. now, of course, jon, it's going to be cold out there. hopefully people are bundled up. forecasters say it's going to be below freezing but with awe -- all the cheer and fun, people will have a good time. >> hope folks catch it here on fox news channel tonight. thank you. >> more than a thousand people have now left their homes after a massive explosion on a train in north dakota poured thick black smoke into the air.

investigators say one train derailed and slammed into a second train hauling crude oil, triggering the blast. happened yesterday in the eastern part of the state, half our outside of fargo. today the worst of the smoke is gone but the damage remains. health officials are testing the air quality, and journalists say half of the water tower is now covered in soot. still, the mayor says folks dodged a bullet because the crash up folded just outside town. will carr has more. so, what are officials saying about air quality there? he officials are saying that things are getting better, but at this point it's not good enough for people to start returning to the area. i want to show you again exactly what led up to all of this. we had some cell phone video of one of the explosions. you can see a fire ball shooting up into the sky. this all happened around 2:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon in north dakota. authorities say a bnsf train was

heading east, pulling around 100 cars carrying grain. somehow that train derailed and crashed into a train heading in the opposite direction. that train was carrying crude oil. >> it was the third explosion that rattled the house and the doors and the windows were all chicagoing and scott and i came out. the garage door, and the flames were so high and it was like it was right happening behind us. >> witnesses saw several massive fire balls go up into the air. then a thick plume of smoke. they could see the smoke for more than 15 miles away. >> almost like nighttime. it was just dark. the entire sky just blacked out. you can't see anything. and so we come in here, digging around on the side streets, trying to get a close view, and it was pretty surreal feeling. >> amazingly, nobody was hurt in

either the initial crash or the explosions that happened afterwards. >> any word on when the people in north dakota can get back into their houses? >> reporter: well, what we know as of right now is about 1600 people evacuated. they evacuated voluntarily. from the town of castletown, mile from the crash site. the reason authorities asked for evacuations they were concern about potential health problems in the area. >> people listened, did not panic. they were calm, cool. we did not have one crash, not one accident. people did what they were asked to do, and they got out. >> reporter: so again, things are getting better but not to the point where health officials feel comfortable asking people to come back into their areas. we can tell you that the ntsb is on the scene, trying to figure out what caused the train to derail in the first place. they could be on the scene for the next five to seven days.

olympics. surveillance video captured the first attack on sunday in a train station. a man wounded died overnight, bringing the death toll to 18. less than 24 hours later russian officials say another suicide bomber blew up a bus during yesterday's morning rush in the same city. more than a dozen people died in that attack. investigators say the same group is likely to blame because the attackers used similar devices. volgograd is in southern russia and the winter games are set to begin in sochi 400-mile to the south. nobody has claimed responsibility for the bombings but a rebel leader threatened attacks on the olympics. right now it's just past mid-michigan in -- midnight in volgograd. they ordered locals not to set off fireworks during one of the country's most popular holidays. our international analyst is

as well as social issues, just like marijuana. >> one of them comes from illinois. using drones, unmanned drones, is regulated now. apparently peta put out the word it might be able to harass hunters and fishermen by using drones. the illinois legislature said, no, not going to do that. >> well, you know, drones are a great example of tech -- technology changing. there's great uses that can help society. the faa has now six areas designated for commercial use and they'll experiment. what we can expect now, states will try to regulate and pass other laws about what are the proper uses of drones. do we have to be worried about them? like giving up our privacy? can the police use them to hover? how long can they keep the information? what we can expect is other states next year to pass more

laws. >> here's one that smokers who visit the state of illinois ought to know. if you flick your cigarette butt on the street, you can be subject to a $50 fine. >> well, you know, there's other laws that say if you're with your children you can't smoke in your cars. as society we have always allow evidence certain things to happen. we can drink, drink in our own homes but you can't take out liquor on to the street. so we should expect these laws to continue, but now they're going to come about because we're also using them for marijuana. are we going to be allowed to use marijuana doing some type of recreational activity? i don't know. one thing we can expect, as technology changes, society changes, we're always going to have new laws. they're going to try to help with respect to what we think as society ought to be the proper morels morals and conduct ourselves. >> the legislatures have to keep themselves busy. >> happy new year to you. >> happy new year too you.

fight over the debt ceiling, which should be raised late february, early march, when we'll likely hit it. now, republicans said they're not going to pass a clean debt ceiling increase. we haven't figured out what that will be. we're thinking maybe tax reform, maybe entitlement reform but there's going to be a figure over that one. >> but with the president's poll numbers in the tank, yes, they are higher than those of congress, but with his poll numbers so low, does he have a lot of political capital to push back those demands? >> he may have wasted his political capital or lost a lot of it during this obamacare rollout. the idea among democrats is if they can force republicans into a standoff situation similar to what we saw with the government shutdown, they can end up taking the blame, the republicans and last time after the shutdown they took a steep drop in the polls. so that's a similar situation they're hoping might play out.

people out of their homes. in a town of about 2400. the sheriff has lifted the evacuation order in castleton, north dakota, after yesterday's train derailment. nobody, we are told, was hurt. take a look at this new video. shows passengers onboard a strand ship in antarctica, stomping the snow and ice to try to make a flat surface on which a helicopter could land. russian officials said a chopper will try to rescue the passengers once the weather clears. forecasters say that could happen as soon as tomorrow. officials say fierce wind and snow topped previous rescue attempts but the tourists and scientists on board are in good spirits and posted another video to prove it. >> one, two, three, ♪ ♪

as the death toll from the syrian civil war topped 100,000 people. conor paul is live in our middle east newsroom. conor, can you explain what is behind the delay? >> this is the second deadline in the drive to dismantle syria's chemical weapon arsenal. in november the assad ridgeile destroyed chemical weapons facility and equipment, things that would put together the chemical weapons. that was seen as the first real test of this agreement. now, tonight they were hoping to have all the major, the most deadly, most critical chemical weapons removed from syria, including 20 tons of mustard gas. international inspectors have nod blamed anyone for the delay, citing technical delays. still, syria is country at word and has had a lot of bad weather. so getting international inpickettors in and the weapons out is a real challenge.
