you are starting it off right. >> let me come with you, please. >> now to rick leventhal with how the new york city police department is keeping everyone safe tonight. rick? >> it is a tough job. anytime you invent a million people to the party you have to worry about security. they have gotten good about it over the years. you can see the metal barricades that stretch all the way up broadway to central park and they have pens set up they are putting people in. the side streets have been sealed off to traffic. there are check points. no check they are checking bags, under cover officers working the crowd and uniformed officers in times square. you can look at where the ball will be dropping. there she is at the top this. we will be out here to watch and tell you how things are going.

♪ so we'll set the world on fire ♪ >> welcome back. let's talk about new year's resolutions. by the way it is cold in new york times square but it is fine. what are your new year's resolution. >> what i am not giving up is dancing and eating salami. >> eating salami. eating salami. >> dancing and eating salami are my two favorite things but i'm going to try to be even nicer to you in 2014 despite your politics. >> that's a good thing. there you go. >> don't you think? how about yours? >> i will tell you what mine is. i'm going to lose 25 pounds. not because i want to be a blow dried anchorman that looks good and all of that but because i want to be healthy for my kids and haunt conservatives for 15 to 20 years. getting healthy is one the most popular new year's resolutions.

focus in on the present and make plans for the future. what i like to do is i like to have someone make a little card out with their five resolutions and then mail it to themselves and then look at those resolutions every day. i have kept off 123 pounds, but in the last year, 2013, my mail has quadrupled from overweight children, teenagers, young adults and seniors who are just trying a quick, easy way to lose weight and it just doesn't work like that. you have to be focused on you. don't be afraid of the scale. don't be afraid of going to the doctors. you maybe a diabetic and have high cholesterol or high blood pressure and not even know it. >> richard, let me jump in for a second. you have sold over 20 million of your exercise tapes. i was one of them. actually two.

i'll tell you, it's genius what you do and i hope i'm not breaking anything up here for you but i understand you are 65. you don't look older than 40. >> well, i'm 65 and as we are talking and you are in the cold, i'm here squeezing my tushie. i'm on number 87. i think i have had my exercise studio 39 years. next will be 40 years. it is called slimmin's and i try to give hope because when you have hope you can cope. we all have to learn to be kinder to everyone this year just be loving and giving to everyone. i think that's the secret of longevity and youth. and you should be doing bun squeezes because you are handsome. both of you are gorgeous and breathtaking. >> very sweet. >> it is very important that you stay healthy and live a long life. >> we have a lot of fun on "the five" together. we look out for each other and we substituted doughnuts and

done. it is obviously great to be home and served with a lot of great people over there. but it is nice to be back in the united states. >> what was the one take-away from the experience, something you weren't expecting or thought was unique? >> one thing, i had an opportunity to work with afghan counterparts closely. the relationship i built with not only my team members and the afghans that i worked with was absolutely amazing. i can't explain how much it meant to me to work with them and help them to build gov nance and development in their province. >> have you spent a new year's eve away from home? >> yes, sir. last year. >> what is it like for the military people out there that don't have a new year's eve celebration. >> whether you are on a ship or in afghanistan, it doesn't matter. you would rather be with your family and friends. you have a job to do. you are with your brothers and sisters in arms and that's what we are called to do and what we do. >> they say military personnel are tough.

have done it. become one with beckel. >> i haven't given up yet doing that. you know where bolling is? he is in puerto rico. >> that's my country, remember. >> i'm irish- puerto rican. >> irish-puerto rican, i don't think there is a combination like that. >> security is a concern with a million plus here celebrating tonight. rick leventhal is on the ground in times square. rick. >> of course the nypd is in charge of security at times square. there are countriless members of the joint terrorism task force out here keeping new yorkers and visitors safe. among them, the new york office of the fbi. there are hundreds of a agents on duty including hazmat teams and bomb techs and a s.w.a.t. team standing by in case they are need. terrorism is a major concern anytime you have crowds like these in one place. they have been careful in screening everyone before they get in to time squamplt once they are in here you have officers and agents including undercover agents keeping an eye

on everyone. we have been told by the fbi there were numerous suspicious packages that have been checked out. fortunately all of them were unfounded. we were also told by the fbi earlier tonight they are taking this seriously, as they should and checking out every single possible lead, no matter how frivolous it might be. i spoke with george, the assistant director in charge of the fbi. here's more of what he told me. >> you get all kinds of crazy calls. some crazy calls and some legit calls but we treat them all the same. whatever call we get we treat ass a real call and run them out. if we get a hundred a night we will run them tonight. >> right now we are all good, guys and maybe no safer place on the planet than times square for new year's eve. >> by the way, keep the packages away from here. that's most important. >> thank you, rick. checking back with you later in the programming for fox all-american new year's.
