lots of theories about what happened to a giant yellow duck on display in taiwan. on new year's eve the celebrity bird certainly burst and deflate, and no one is exactly sure what happened. >> here's harris faulkner. >> thank you, both. i'm harris in today for shepard smith on the fox news deck. blinding snow, boundary-chilling cold, and things are going to be worse. right now winter storm and blizzard warnings now have moved in. they stretch from the midwest to the northeast. we have been waiting a few hours for this 0 to happen and at it coming together. more than a foot of snow could fall between today and tomorrow. and already chicago with six inches of the snow, more on the way. winds have just picked up in the last few minutes. our crew is standing by live. we're hoping the shot holds. and here, in new york city, just a dusting but more upstate. a preview of what is could come,

snow and ice covering things already in cleveland and indianapolis and making driving dangerous, and officials are warning people to stay off the roads. but the snow is only part of the storm's one-two punch. it's bringing sub zero temperatures. here's how things are going overnight. 22 degrees below zero in boston. 12 below in new york. chicago, minus ten. as far as nashville, still below zero. that is nothing compared to our neighbor's to the north. the temperature in winnipeg, canada, 53 degrees below zero. colder than the surface of mars. we have live team fox coverage. janice dean has the updated storm track, which has just pulled together. garrett is live in the very windy city. let's beginning with molly in boston where the storm is picking up and fast. >> reporter: it's 3:00 in the

afternoon. governor released state workers today and the commute is just beginning to get underway. look at the traffic. nasty already today. we saw a lot of folks coming in for their first day of work after the holidays. a lot of folks are trying to make it home in what looks to be a very slow commute. road travel is not the only difficulty. at the logan airport, all flights are expected to be stopped tonight, resuming not until noonish tomorrow. they're hoping to get things back up and run; already, cancellations and delays there. and coastal flood is a concern in massachusetts we have seen some water on the roads, creating a mess. very concerned about the high tide at midnight and tomorrow at nobody. the most dangerous time along the coastal communities. a lot of focus on the communities south of boston and new england is not the only one getting this weather. folks in chicago facing a very tough times. garrett?

>> reporter: right now we're looking at another eight to ten inches before the day is done. this wind is kicking up the snow, snow drifts several feet in many years. we're looking at the chicago river, completely frozen over. the snow is blowing everybody -- everywhere right now, and cities near the great lakes where the lake-effect snow is just blowing that cold wind over the water, picking it up, dumping inches, several feet of snow in many areas. ticket to ten more inches expected, causing hazardous driving situations. in the air, delays. 600 flights cancelled at o'hair yesterday. 300 more today. and that's just going to continue as this snow continues to come down and in the next few days not going to get any better. monday, the high temperature in chicago, harris, negative eight degrees. that's the high. >> wow. bitter. garrett, thank you so much.

i'm glad your spot held together. thank you. >> now janice dean is live in the extreme weather. the janice, the temperatures we're talking about are very dangerous. >> absolutely. and for the northeast, some of these temperatures we haven't felt in years, and even though kid have a snow day tomorrow, it's dangerous for the kids to be out playing in the snow. so keep that in mind. two pieces of energy coming together across the northeast, and another across the southeast, and that's what is going to combine and make our nor'easter this evening overnight. when the worst conditions will happen. so we'll start to see the snow flying in boston, like molly mentioned. d.c., 10:00 p.m., mainly snow event. philadelphia, new york, and then we won't see a huge blockbuster storm in terms of snow totals. the dangerous part of this is the wind. we'll see wind gusts in excess of 50 miles-per-hour. so the snow consistency will be

dry, and that is going to just blow all over the place. whiteout conditions. blizzard-like conditions. >> people say it's wintertime, this is what we're supposed to see. but the snow we're talking about is really extraordinary. >> we will see some impressive snow totals, especially across instinct, where -- across new e. again, not huge, huge amounts of snow but the problem is the dangerous part is the fact that the winds are going to be gusting, in some cases for 36 hours. the people are urged to stay off the roads. they might even shut down the long island expressway so that tells you something. >> we're talking about millionss of people who would be impacted in the new york area. back to the temperatures for just a moment. i was talking -- telling viewers and tweet it it out.

minus 53 in winnipeg canada. colder than the surface of mars. people didn't believe that but that's where we are in points north. >> absolutely. all of the arctic air is coming south. they're setting records in canada, all-time lows, in quebec, ottawa, and points north, temperatures will drop significantly here in the northeast as well. taking a look at the forecast satellite radar image ricer as the storm exits we'll see the temperatures drop and these are air temperatures but the wind chills are going to be below zero. take a look as we go further out in time. again, below zero for many of these big cities. overnight and then tomorrow. friday, 8:00 a.m. going to feel like minus two in new york and minus 15 in boston. so, again, even though we'll have snow on the ground, a lot of snow days. kids can't be outside in this weather. >> we want to remind everybody to take their pets in, too. we cannot say that enough.

we also know that people give up looking for work. so that's the flipside. the balance on that. the commerce department reports construction spending in november hit levels not seen since 2009. jumping by 1% and beating expectations. so that's your economic news as it's coming together in the 3:00 hour on the east coast. one of the big three american automaker is about to become 100% italian. fiat has agreed to buy more than 40% chrysler shares from a united auto workers trust. so fiat's full ownership, and chrysler estimates sold 2.6 million vehicles worldwide last year. up 18% from 2012, and more than 70% from 2010. that was the first full year under fiat's control. a priest, found dead in his own church. police say they're launching a homicide investigation.

it rectory. it happened in eureka in northern california. the deacon went looking for the priest when he didn't show up for mass. the killing happened after evening services on tuesday. help finally has arrived for these people stuck for days board the ship in antarctic camp a chinese helicopter today rescued all 52 passengers after authorities said the weather cleared enough for them to do that. and there were some crew members on there, too. the chopper brought the passengers in groups to an australian ship nearby. the russian research vessel that was trapped in the ice was the first to make the effort. rescuers said blinding snow, howling winds forced them to turn back. all 22 crew members decided to stay wait until the ice breaks up and that's not going to be anytime real soon. and the ship is not in any danger of sinking and they have plenty of supplies.

>> the national football league could be face michigan serious embarrassment ahead of the playoffs. the home teams in three of the four games have not sold out their tickets and that means local fans may not be able to watch the games on tv. the league requires home teams to sell all their general admissions tickets in order to avoid a tv blackout. the three games include the green bay packers home playoff at lambeau field against the san francisco 49ers. that will be a quarterback showdown. the packers are coming off a huge win against theirary. rival, the chicago bears. aaron rodgers returned from the injury that kept hmm off the field. forecasts say temperatures on green bay could sink to minus 15 degrees. the cold even in wisconsin and the parkers have less than an hour and a half to sell all the tickets for sunday's game first, ed, why aren't the tickets selling? >> well, people just don't have the money. really comes down to that.

the cold weather, yes, but i was at the fifth coldest game in green bay. ironically. and it was hard to find a ticket. but that's when the economy was good many years ago. i talked to people in green bay as to why this is happening and it's simple. it's the weather and also how much it costs these days to go to a game. so it's starting to impact even the nfl playoff games these days. >> why does the nfl have this rule anyway? and can they change it? >> i think it's rule they're going to have to change soon. with technology the way it is and people -- look, watching television, watching a game, it's nice these tase, these tv sets, and it's a really nice experience. people still, especially in green bay, they're crazy fans up there they're out of their minds when it comes to the packers. the idea they can't sell out a game? people would do anything they could to go to those games, but right after christmas, people are feeling the pinch and costs $400 or $500 to go, after the parking and food and tickets.

it's about the economy. not just the weather. it's the economy and it's suffering all over. they why it's not just green bay. it's indianapolis and cincinnati as well. all the economies are hurting the local areas are suffering because of obviously the economy, but at the same time that's why tickets are not selling. >> you know, you mixed these other cities. we started to see how tough this was when the cincinnati bengals produced the video the players urging fans to buy tickets. how serious is this? >> well, a lot of people are starting to really look at the nfl different than they used to. a lot of the offfield antics and the bad press these players are getting and these teams are getting are starting to really wear -- weigh into main stream america. i used to love football. this year was tough because i'm a giants fan. but i have lost a little interest and people have because o the offfield antics, the economy is suffering. the nfl will be fine in terms of

the super bowl and the championship games will probably be okay but the quality of place isn't that good. people were not excited how the teams were playing. the quality of the product is down and it's more expensive, and that's not a good situation. >> for somebody who literally is a couch potato, there's a lot of rules changes. aisle not going to turn this into an episode of that but that's impacted the way people watch games. talking about going from 16 to 18 games. then you have to buy more tickets to more gamed and gets more expensive. >> it does. those -- season tickholders in green bay, it's across the board. football is about xs and os, and right enough it's dollars and cents and doesn't make sense to brave minus 15 degrees in green bay. that's why tickets are not selling along with the most important part is the economy stinks. people aren't going to pay money when they can flip on their tv set. >> we trade e-mails.

west, florida, to f ft. mears and then jumping off in the gulf of mexico. well, that same month, security cameras at the ferry terminal in key west picked up images of man believed to be that banker, boarding a ferry boat, headed to ft. meyers. no one saw anybody jump ship but the. >> reporter: ed siting of mr. prize and city suicide note were enough to convince a florida judge to declare him dead. the feds are warning that oil shipments could be more dangerous. nobody actually heard this explosion but hundred of people had to evacuate. at least two other oil trains blew up last year. officials say the potentially volatile crude comes from a shale patch in maryland and north dakota.

no word how much colorado raked in on the first day of marijuana sales now that it's legal but government officials are predicting more than a half billion dollars a greer wholesale and retail sales in weed. more than a million dollars per day. and $67 million per year in tax revenue alone. it's now legal to possess up to one ounce of marijuana in colorado if you're from there, for recreational use. 24 shops opened yesterday, most of them in denver. officials are reporting very few problems, aslide from the long lines and smoking in pot. adam is live in denver. who is buying? >> reporter: every age, every race, every walk of life. people behind me are some of the more than 650 who bought yet. you see grandparents, men, women, working people, retired people, college students,

they're paying up to $400 to purchase an ounce of marijuana they can legally use recreationally, just in colorado. you can't take it out of state, and you certainly can't smoke it in public. you can smoke it in a private. if you're from out of state you can purchase a quarter ounce you. mentioned the tax revenue. but here at medicine man, denver, the largest dispensary of medical marijuana and. legal marijuana, they're expanding. >> they're staying at the screen to see if they recognize people in line. what is the next hurdle for advocates? >> that's the issue. while it's legal to smoke marijuana recreationally here in colorado, the federal government maintains at the federal level

need to know about, like if you have a job. >> right. everyone is talking about how -- it's available now, and that is true. its available versus use are two different things. there are a lot of restrictions, you can't use it in public places on ski slopes in clubs, bars, cafes. you are committing a crime if you do that. also, dui, dwi, you can't use it, either have an open canister in your car or can't be under the influence when you're driving, and then as far as employment goes, which is what you are referring to, you can be fired if you're either coming to work high or even -- >> that makes sense. those are some of the same rules with alcohol. but from what i was reading you don't even have to have it on you or in you if your boss knows your doing this, they can fire you. >> that's correct. if you are doing it after work. so it's the same restriction. not like alcohol. if your getting high and there's

a policy that says you can't do drugs, even if the drug is legally purchased -- >> how do they get away with it if it's legal? >> because there's a decision by the highest court in the state o colorado which allows that. so it's been determined they can actually fire someone if they're tested and -- again, blood test, not like when you're driving. it's not -- it's not an alcohol test. i if they can show the traces and they have the right to fire you. so you can get it, buy it, but be careful when you use it. >> let's talk that some of the caveats. can't do it in bars and lounges so we're not going to see smoking weed sections at the ski resort. >> we are not. can't bring into it an airport and can't take it over state lines and neighboring states are waiting to arrest people.
