sotomayor stay for little sisters of the poor, a stay for them to have this religious exemption where they wouldn't have to sign a waiver which would basically give them the further exemption having to issue contraception. obamacare mandate force religious institutions to have contraception. now the white house firing back saying they want the supreme court to get rid of that exemption. >> little sisters making the point even with this exemption they are forced to participate in distributing contraceptions what they believe are abortafasions. rather than let this go, there are many cases where the white house turns a blind eye to law breakers including many people sneaking over the border from mexico. in this case they decided to bring the full weight of the federal power and justice department to bear on these nuns and crush them. force them into submission.

"new york times" editorial board basically saying these nuns, they already had this exemption. this is a little slip of paper. they already have because they are a religious institution they should quit their whining, they should sign permission slip and not even worry about it? >> the "new york times" and the obama administration know more about their religious beliefs than they do? they are theologians now. the obama department of justice lecturing nuns. we know about catholic doctrine and you are not violating your own beliefs. the politics of this is clear. single women with master's degree they really care about this contraception

lost. why did the obama administration decide that we are going to allow the iraqis who seem totally incapable of running their own affairs to run their own affairs. >> they decided this wasn't a war worth winning. if you remember the president said the good war was in afghanistan. they doubled down in afghanistan which they are now leaving early as well without maybe committing to that future. so they decided iraq wasn't worth it iraq was the bad war. regardless of what we invested and the success of the iraq surge in 2007 and 2000 2458 really pacified anbar province and created an opportunity, they said nope, you are off on your own. lessons in history tells us when you do that if security forces aren't ready and the government is not prepared it's going to slide in the wrong direction. then all that investment, money, blood that we made in that country just sort of trickles away and we see more and more violence. >> what a bitter disaster. and not just iraq but syria and entire region. this is rhetorical question but i have to ask it. what is the strategy, the administration's strategy for the whole region.

eliminate that money for decrease cost of living adjustment for military retirees approved in last month's budget deal. over to you, clayton. >> new year comes tax season a long way from april there are a few things can you do right now to save money come deadline day here are tips. >> hi clayton how are you. >> i'm doing great. happy new year to you. one of the first steps you talk about is getting organized. we always put it off until the beginning of april. maybe you say to start doing it right now. >> absolutely. clayton, we are talking about 2014 taxes right now. as we are starting off the new year, we want to try to save money on taxes we are. millions of dollars of spent taxpayers because they pay their taxes late. don't make estimated payments on time and incur penalties and interest. one of the biggest things you can do to save tax in 2014 is to plan out you're year knowing what your estimated payments are.

remember, january, april, july, october. that's when your estimated payments are due. don't make them late. be organized. you won't pay any penalties or interest. >> just makes it so much easier throughout the whole year. >> it really does. next tip is to contribute to charities. >> yeah. i mean, i'm going to talk about itemized deduction notice a minute. but there is a good chance that a lot of them are going to be itemizing a rot of our deductions this year. charities is a big thing that we should all consider. as we are looking out in the 2014, consider what charities you want to contribute to. remember, you don't necessarily have to contribute cash to a charity. can you contribute clothing, cars, personal items, a lot of of charities will accept those kinds of things. you get a fair market value of them and can you take a deduction for it i don't know, sometime in the next would you weeks, take a look around your house and think of things you don't need that somebody else might need and think about correcting them to a charity you can get a tax deduction for that. >> great tip there. how will obamacare shake things up in the tax system come this year. >> this will be a bit of a

controversial issue and different people will discuss either way. it may very well be that a lot of employers over the next few years are going to be going to low cost high deductible health plans because of obamacare. keep an eye on that, clayton. you and i might be maying more in our medical expenses, particularly deducted tillables for pharmaceuticals, drugs, out-of-pocket things if we have to go to an emergency room, for example. keep track of medical expenses because we might be able to itemize those deductions. we might no v. been able to do so in the past. now as medical expenses are going to be inseizing a lot of people are thinking and a lot of tax accountants like me are thinking clients are going to be itemizing on medical deductions. start keeping track of all of your medical expenses. lump them all together for your entire family because you might be taking that deduction next year. >> finally you say save, save, save. this is the best time of year to actually start front loading that with a 401(k) and other plans? >> yeah.

the obama administration toward people of faith. why would, of all the people bending the law in the united states of america, why would the obama white house send the justice department after a group of nuns? >> because they don't consider the nuns to be the same as a church or religious employer. the obama administration did something different, tucker here. they tried to distinguish when it comes to the h.h.s. mandate which is really a bone they are tossing to groups like planned parenthood and others to force on religious organizations that don't meet the standard to be considered churches. so like the little sisters. and the administration says in their lawsuit, the applicants are nonprofit nursing home. they don't say they are a nonprofit group of nuns. so they try to make this distinguished. if you are a religious organization. well, you don't have to comply if you self-certify but your insurance company can then give people with that form free birth control. the only way you would get free birth control. free abort faces, free

sterilization is if you get a insurance plan from these organizations that can self-certify out of it. it it doesn't make much sense. it's accounting gimmick. >> caught theial board in the "new york times" yesterday saying basically they should get over it stop whining. they are already exempt. nothing to see here, look away. all they need to do is sign that little piece of paper. that little permission slip essentially and then they already have the exemption. just forget about it. >> and that's what is so bizarre here is that by signing that piece of paper, they are waiving, in a sense they are endorsing the obama administration's position here that though they oppose giving out, and including this as part of their insurance plans, need these abort faces, catholic organization that in fact by signing that their employees could go to the insurance company, which a third party, they don't get to control, and then can get free, now they call it free birth control. but ultimately, these elm plol employees wouldn't have access to that option.

if they didn't get insurance plan through the organization that opts out of this. so there is no way really to stay out of the hhs mandate requirement. and the administration here, what's interesting, in 37 pages, which is why i think we haven't gotten a response back from justice sotomayor, she may have referred this to the whole court because it was such an intense response from the department of justice. they tried to distinguish the little sisters of the poor and group of nuns from hobby lobby a private company. what you can see is this administration extremely concerned there are two private companies that have cases before the court that have injunctions against the mandate that aren't religious. their owners are so if they can get an injunction at least until the supreme court decides whether this is a violation of the first amendment rights of these groups or organizations or companies and their owners, then certainly you would think that a group like the little sisters would have an even stronger argument. >> so the nuns stay violates their conscience on religious grounds the "new york times" and obama

next guest 38 acres and a million dollars to create a retreat for wounded soldiers. organization is a nonprofit officially. so, imagine his surprise when he got a $20,000 tax bill from the state of virginia. we are joined by ken folk 21 year combat veteran and founder of the bolder retreat for military and wellness. how did this happen? a nonprofit being assessed 20 grand tax bill? >> yeah. we -- you know, we didn't think any taxes would happen. on the retreat because, you know, in the state of virginia, and most in lou done county, it's pretty clear that most nonprofits are exempt from personal property taxes. and, what we did is applied through the county's web site and got a letter back about two months later saying that there has been a moratorium on exceptions since 2008. but it was never on the web site or anything. so, surprise, surprise, two

days later there is assessors on the site and we got assessed with about $32 million in improvements to the land and then received a tax bill that was, you know, commensurate with that assessment. >> so you take plan and improved it solely for the benefit of wounded veterans and the county punishes you for that? i guess you can look at it that way. i'm optimistic. we he had a vote in october at the county board and they voted against lifting the moratorium. they went back to vote in november. the moratorium has now been lifted. and what that means is that we can can apply again between now and april, and hopefully they will make the exemption prior to that. >> well, i hope you shamentd them into it. our viewers are seeing pictures of your retreat bolder crest on the screen. it's beautiful. tell us about it. >> well, my wife and i -- i'm a retired navy bomb

disposal technician. i was here in washington stations and just retired from the navy when the first wounded bomb tech started coming back from iraq. and we started a small foundation primarily to pay for emergency relief for these families to be bedside by their wounded loved ones while they were here in the d.c. hospitals then walter reid and also bethesda. and in 2010, i was in georgetown doing a master's degree and i zip up wisconsin avenue in the evening to visit some of our families and just so happened to be the worst two years of combat injuries in afghanistan. 10 and 11. and we started bringing these families out to our home which is about an hour away from bethesda. primarily just to get away from the hospital environment and needed a home cooked meal. and basically we realized that we wanted to do more and bolder crest retreat not just for this bomb disposal community it's for any and all wounded warriors and their families. the work with the small group of bomb disposal men and women is what inspired

plan. we are joined by two former marine captains. good morning, thanks for being with us. i would like everybody at home to see the differences between the men and women on this fitness test. for the women, three pull-ups minimum, eight for a perfect score. men do three minimum, 20 for a perfect score. many women were not able to do the pull-ups, a flexed arm hang. i'll start with you gunnery sergeant. what do you think about the differences in the plans to begin with? >> my problem isn't so much the differences, it's that the marine corps didn't prepare these women to succeed. they decided to send them to boot camp and not have them prepared. does that say the women can't do it? no. the marine corps did not train them effectively. for me, that is not a positive

statement for the marine corps to be sending out about the females who are there to put their lives on the line for the captain. >> captain, what do you think? should it be delayed because the women are failing or is this a bad idea to begin with? >> i don't think there should be a delay. i always believe there should be a single physical fitness standard for marines regardless of their gender. a marine should be able to do pull-ups, period, regardless of whether it's a guy or woman. they set that single standard. they need to enforce that single standard. they will be able to achieve that single standard. when i was a commander i did pull-ups, we didn't separate the women from the men. we were all marines. we can do this. like any athlete, set a goal and achieve that goal. >> what do you think? being a fitness person there is one way to get over an own stackle. you don't necessarily have to pull yourself up.

you can use a leg or something else this has been a huge point of contention for people who say women don't belong in combat positions. >> this isn't about a physical fitness test all senders should have. you're not going to lower the standards for men and grade the standards for women. the physical fitness is not equali equality, it's about fitness. we need to set a standards they are going to accomplish. my problem is you don't set them off to training and not have them able to meet that standard. you train them. what happened? how do we have 55% not graduating, succeeding at this mission? women belong in the marine corps. i spent 20 years supporting infantry and combat operations. it's a hard job. we can't take that away from our ladies. train them so they are capable of doing this and not embarrassing the corps like this. >> captain, three pull-ups, it's the same minimum for both men and women, but when 50% of the women are failing, does that mean there needs to be some sort of delay or what's the best plan

which income would cover all the bills? that was mine. my husband worked on commission. we devoted that one strictly to the debt and lived off my income by having a budget that was bare bones, cutting out all expenses, down sizing. we had to move closer to our jobs and save gas. that's pretty much how we did it. >> i love this idea of counting your savings as a bill. how do you do that? >> one thing people worry about is their bills. a lot of people can be strict paying off their bills. they know when they've got bills and they pay it. if you consider savings as a bill, it's it's paying your bil it's a bill to yourself. set that aside, even if it is a small amount. something is better than nothing. >> i love the fact -- you have a big house, people move into the big house, they have the mortgage, but then they have to furnish the whole house, too. sit on the floor and eat your

din her? so you decided to build your own furniture. love this. >> absolutely. i tried to find ways that i could have things that i wanted without having to spend money on it. so i have built a king-size bed, a dresser, a dining table, and i taught myself using the internet. i taught myself how to sew, how to make my own cleaning products, beauty supplies, anything that i could do that would cut costs of what it would normally cost to buy from the store. i did it myself. and you can utilize websites like pinterest so you can still have a beautiful home to live, which was important to me being that i had an interior background. >> it will look better, too. if you are making something rustic yourself, it will look better than the unpronounceable thing you bought from ikea. >> exactly. >> and it's beautiful. it's a big, beautiful, wooden bed that would normally cost thousands of dollars.

>> yes. >> answer this for me, because i'm of the opinion for the latte factor that you put into great effect. don't cut that stuff out. if that's the thing in the morning to get you out of bed, you like your latte, continue to do that, but you cut it out. was that difficult to do? >> i am a coffee drinker. i love coffee. but one of the biggest bills that people have is the small things that they don't even know they are spending money on. and coffee is one of those big things. you just stop by a coffee shop and spend $5 on a coffee every morning. and that soon adds up. and if you just sacrifice that and make your up coffee, you don't have to go without, you just have to think of different options. >> instead of $4, by the bag of beans for $4 and actually do it at home. >> exactly. >> sorry, amy, finally, with a few seconds left here, don't aim to be rich is another tip you have. fill us in on that one. >> exactly. you're just trying to get out of
